Steve Hewlett talks to the brilliant new Stand Up sensation Tom Lucy. Tom who was performing Stand Up successfully from the age of 16 on the road has now added TV and the London 02 Arena to his CV as well as many tours supporting Michael McIntyre, Jack Whitehall and many more.Certain Comics stand out for me and that's not easy in this flooded market but when they do I really enjoy their new material, style of telling a gag or story and their personality, its not common to have all three and Tom has just that. He just knows what is funny and I am interested to know more about his discipline on stage where his material and improvisation is concerned as he is Top Class at both and anyone dare to sit in the front row of one of his gigs then be ready to be part of the show...

Balancing Acts
Kelly Convey on how the pressure of rapid progression in her stand up career led to acute anxiety and why it's so important for comedians to realise they are a commodity

In this conversation I chat to stand up comedian and writer Kelly Convey (https://www.instagram.com/kelly_convey).Kelly was voted by The Metro as ‘1 of 9 Hilarious Women to Look Out for in 2017’. She was a finalist in the South Coast Comedian of the Year and So You Think You’re Funny competitions and has supported Russell Kane, Alan Carr and most recently Adam Hills on tour.Kelly explains why no one needs to know her opinion on anything unless it’s funny and why it's career suicide to give your opinion at an early stage of your stand up career. She opens up about the challenges she faced moving up from paid spots to higher profile gigs, and being compared to more established and experienced comedians by both herself and her peers. And the pressure that came with that. She describes how performing in market towns for older demographics, made her realise that if she wanted to be a mainstream comic, she needed to appeal to a wider audience. And how realising that, has changed her style of performance. She also explains why she purposely doesn’t wear anything to sexualise herself on stage to the audience and why she’s ok with that.We talk about her former careers as a TV exec and working in the travel industry and how getting fired from her job led her committing to stand up and gigging every night for the first 6 months, which resulted in her getting signed to Off The Kerb. Then how her rapid progression from doing open mic gigs to performing 30 minute sets led to a bout of acute anxiety. She describes why it's important as a creative to be professional and have a plan of how you’re going to progress your career and realising that you are your own commodity. We also talk about why Kelly doesn’t like performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, her approach to writing new material, finding her own rhythm and lots more!Happy listening :)Steve - @offkeysteve See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The comedian Joanne McNally is one of my favourite new discoveries from the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She burst onto the Irish comedy scene in 2014 and in less than a year became the co-host on RTÉ 2’s flagship comedy show Republic of Telly, co-wrote and starred in the stage show Separated At Birth a comedy about her adoption and performed sold out solo stand up shows all over Dublin. She's been nominated for multiple Dublin Fringe Festival awards including Best Performer and Best Production and been a guest on many late night TV shows. Now, she's signed with famous comedy management Off The Kerb, and moved to London! We sat down in her offices to have a chat about everything, from how she got into comedy, how she finds inspiration for her shows, how to handle tough crowds, and her struggles from body image to break ups.I love this episode and hope you do to!Quotes:"i don't want to be very PC. I'm not a worthy comic. I'm not trying to make a massive point about anything. I just want to have a good time, and I want my audience to have a good time.""I have earnest fatigue." "i don't want to be one of those tragedy tourists who are just constantly rolling out their sad stories to get likes." See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Mark Tughan (@marktughan) opened the first Glee Comedy Club (@thegleeclub) over 20 years ago having just left his job as a city banker. He fell in love with comedy and put his money where his mouth is to become part of the industry. Today the Glee has 4 venues across the UK and continues to be (as he puts it) one of the elite "credible" comedy clubs outside of the London. We talked about...How and why he decided to quit his day job in finance and start the first purpose built comedy club outside of London. How the Glee Club reacted and dealt with competition in the cities they operate in.Why other clubs have come and gone and yet the Glee Club has prevailed. How the ride in the solo touring circuit has impacted the Glee Club.Is it a conflict of interest having an agent (Off The Kerb) book your club?AND MORE! This podcast would be great for anyone who is interested in gigging at the Glee Comedy Club chain or a professional comedian who already performs there who is interested in the venues history or a local comedy fan who wants to know more about what goes on behind-the-scenes at their local comedy club.
