Microsoft and the Analytics Institute have awarded 150 people from 13 organisations with a DataSMART Foundation Credential in Data Skills following an interactive Datathon event hosted by Microsoft in Dublin on Friday (March 21). The event enabled the participants to apply newly acquired data skills in a collaborative environment, demonstrating the practical benefits of this innovative programme. DataSMART, developed by Technology Ireland DIGITAL Skillnet in partnership with Microsoft and the Analytics Institute, is a trailblazing data literacy initiative designed for non-IT professionals who want to harness data strategically in their roles. Research shows that employees with core data skills advance faster in their careers, while organisations making data-driven decisions achieve accelerated market progress and revenue growth. Major companies including Bord Gais, Pfizer and Flutter have already enrolled employees in the programme, recognising the competitive advantage of building organisation-wide data literacy. The 12-week DataSMART programme equips professionals with foundational skills in data collection, cleaning, transformation, visualisation, and storytelling, while exploring cutting-edge topics like AI, data governance and emerging technologies. It is ideal for non-IT professionals seeking to build confidence in using data. DataSMART is particularly beneficial for large groups from the same organisation, as peer learning interactions deepen understanding and application of data concepts across departments. The programme's flexible format combines online tutorials with interactive workshops, allowing working professionals acquire valuable data literacy competence in a cost-effective way that accommodates busy schedules. Commenting, Maire Hunt, Network Director of Technology Ireland DIGITAL Skillnet, said: "The DataSMART initiative has been a resounding success, helping individuals across all sectors build the confidence and skills needed to navigate today's data-driven world. This programme has proven to be an ideal solution for organisations looking to upskill large groups of employees efficiently, ensuring their workforce can interpret and apply data to make better business decisions. "With its flexible, accessible learning approach and practical applications, DataSMART has opened new opportunities for both individuals and businesses, reinforcing the vital role of data skills in future-proofing Ireland's workforce." Russell Kane, Datathon Facilitator, of Microsoft, said: "It was fantastic to deliver a number of the online modules and subsequently to facilitate the in-person mid-review workshop as well as the full-day in-person datathon. The blended delivery method of the course allowed the participants to work through the contents of the modules at their own pace, while the in-person sessions provided invaluable opportunities for hands-on learning and real-time interactions. "The importance of this course cannot be overstated when it comes to upskilling all staff in understanding the significance and impact of data, particularly in our rapidly evolving era of AI. DataSMART empowers individuals to navigate the complexities of data with confidence, making informed decisions and driving innovation within their organisations. As AI continues to transform many sectors, equipping employees with robust data skills ensures that they remain agile and competitive in a data-driven world." Lorcan Malone, CEO, Analytics Institute, added: "The completion of the DataSMART pilot programme marks an important milestone in advancing data literacy at scale. The positive response from participating organisations highlights the growing recognition that data skills are essential across all roles and industries. By providing a structured yet flexible approach to learning, DataSMART has helped integrate data-driven thinking into everyday decision-making. We are excited to see how this initiative continues to support businesses in building...

In this episode, we're speaking to the multi-award-winning comedian, presenter, actor, author, and scriptwriter Russell Kane.He tells us about this experience growing up funny in a working class household with a hyper-masculine father and how that experience built his career and how it has been reflected in his own attitude to fatherhood. The final episode of the series sees Jason and Dave sit down with a man who rarely sits down, comedian Russell Kane! Russell is currently half way through an epic UK tour that has already seen him play about 60 dates this year, with the same scheduled for next year, and that doesn't take into account the podcasts, the interviews and the corporate gigs that he has to try and juggle as well! Away from that though and when he does have some time to himself, cars are a passion, and in particular 1980's modern classics! He loves old Fords and the motors of his Essex upbringing that rolled off the line at Dagenham, just down the road from his mum and dad's house, but has treated himself to a 1986 vintage BMW 5 series which is his pride and joy, and something he's only too happy to talk about!

The Infinite Monkey Cage

If Aliens really are amongst us, the most likely candidates may not be little green men, but living in plain sight, just below our ocean waves, in the form of the mysterious and awe-inspiringly clever Octopus. Scientists are only just discovering the amazing intelligence of these elegant and highly unusual creatures that seem to have evolved in a completely different way to nearly any other creature on the planet. Brian and Robin are joined by marine biologist Dr Tim Lamont, Neuroscientist Dr Amy Courtney and comedian Russell Kane to uncover just how clever these mysterious creatures are, how they've evolved intelligence in an entirely unique way and whether 8 brains, as well as 8 legs are really better than 1. The panel also discover the alarming truth about the unique sex lives of the octopus - lets just say it doesn't end well for at least one of the participants. New episodes released Wednesdays. Well, hey nonny NO, you did NOT just create a whole, new religion just because you didn't fancy your wife anymore and the grass was green(sleeves)er on the other side of the fence?  That Henry VIII sure has a lot to answer for, including Brexit, in the opinion of this week's incredible guest, comedian and self-confessed romance king, Russell Kane.  Yes, this week, we're going all Tudor on your ass, as we get down into the business of KH the 8th and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, who was selfish enough not to provide a male heir to the throne, so frankly, what else did she expect than being flung onto the scrap heap – it wasn't the worst thing Henry ever did to his wife, after all. As always Grainne and Chantal revel in the mess and let's face it, the drama of today's royal family has NOTHING on the escapades of this lot.  So, grab your lute, don your ruff, and get this Tudor feast, fit for a king into your ears.    Don't forget to join Chantal and Grainne at this year's London Podcast festival on 15th September, with special guest, Christopher Hall! Russell Kane is probably one of the only successful stand-up comics that doesn't even watch stand-up comedy. He took the plunge to try his hand at comedy aged 28 after building a successful career in advertising. It was a huge gamble - which left him Googling bankruptcy over fears he couldn't pay his mortgage. Russell grew up on a London council estate and left school at 16 with few qualifications, because in his words, he was "hell bent on being like a weed smoking bad man”. But he turned his life around through adult education and sheer graft. Russell's drive to succeed is absolutely immense. He doesn't accept rejection and his story of passion and grit is inspiring.

He's know for his sell-out stand-up gigs across and for his TV work, including Live At the Apollo and Celebrity Juice. Plus he has two -count 'em - podcasts, Evil Genius and Man Baggage.I think Russell is genuinely one of the smartest people I've ever interviewed and his mind functions at about three times the speed of everyone else's. It was a real honour to talk to him, especially because he's a fan of the podcast and came ready, willing and able to open up. His failures include his inability to relax, his 20s and his failure to be fully authentic. And, for the first time ever, he opens up about his experiences with self-harm, and how he finally sought help during one of the darkest episodes of his life. This is such a riveting and enlightening listen.
