Did you know that there are show choir blogs? Neither did we. In S5E11, "City of Angels," we follow New Directions to Nationals of… whatever year this is in canon…to Los Angeles. Mr. Schue recruits Sam to be the New Finn (not to be confused with Blaine, who we all know to be the New Rachel), tasked with keeping up spirit and enthusiasm. The Hudson-Hummel clan is out in full force with the series' best parents, Burt and Carole, coming along for the ride and finally processing some long-overdue trauma.Seemingly everyone starts to think about what they'll be doing after graduation (even the ones who aren't graduating), Marley gets some advice from Mercedes, and Blaine gets hit on by his new midgame (wait, did we say that?).Join us as we journey through Finn's favorite songs and learn the fate of the Glee Club.Find us on the Internet: https://linktr.ee/fandomontherocksSupport the pod: Patreon.com/fandomontherocksInterested in how we do it? Celebrating the Legacy of the Morehouse Glee Club – Trey's Table, Episode 267
150 Years Ago (March 1875) Three of the four children in the James Robinson family of Garrison - John (16), Willie (10) and Jennie (19) - died of diphtheria over 10 days. Shortly before she died, Jennie asked for James Meade, her Sunday School teacher: "Tell my young friends to seek the Lord, while he may be found, and meet me in heaven." After a storm, a classified ad appeared in The Cold Spring Recorder offering a reward for a Smith & Wesson seven-shooter with plated barrel and rosewood stock lost in the snow, probably on Main Street between West and Church. Because of the snow, Garden Street was reduced to a single lane, forcing Charley Warren to load one side of his wagon with bystanders to turn around, "like a sailor does the windward gunwale in a gale," according to The Recorder. Mr. VanWinkle complained that a transcript of his lecture on Egypt and the Nile, reprinted in The Recorder, contained many errors, including "some of words altered to others that were not dreamed of when writing." After poultry went missing, Theodore Adams, his father and his brother-in-law found the dead birds buried near the Fishkill line. They set a steel trap and returned to find it gone. They followed the path of bushes where the trap had snagged and branches chewed off to release it. At Kings' Chest Cave, by smoke and bullets and dogs, they drew out and killed a 33-pound wildcat with the trap around its foot. The men had it stuffed and brought it to the village. A burglar broke into the slaughterhouse of Charles Miller and stole $5 [about $150 today] worth of pork, beef and veal. Burglars stole $50 [$1,450] worth of liquor and cigars from Tevan's basement saloon by breaking a window. To add insult to injury, the culprits uncorked and spilled the demijohns and smashed the glass bar backing. The Rock Street door of Baxter's Hardware was jimmied and the money drawer relieved of $4 [$115] in change. In a letter to The Recorder, a resident called for $500 of the $1,000 [$29,000] allocated by the Cold Spring Village Board for streets instead be spent to install kerosene lampposts on every corner to "keep our stores from being plundered night after night." Milton Lawrence's hay and William Odell's red cow were seized for back taxes. A young man who raised alarms when he walked down Main Street at 5:30 p.m. on a Thursday with a bandaged head and bloody clothes said he had been injured working at Miller's slaughterhouse. The Library Association hosted a discussion of the question: "Will the centennial of a republican form of government be celebrated by the United States, as a unit, more than once?" The Glee Club also sang. P. Nichols of Parrott Street said his 17 hens produced 118 eggs in 12 days. Thomas Richards was killed at Croft's Mine in Putnam Valley when he drilled into an unexploded ordnance. A year after Michael O'Brien broke his arm in a fight near the depot, he was finally able to return to his job at the foundry, where a hoist rope broke and a casting crushed his arm. A police officer from Orange County came to Cold Spring to arrest John Wyant on a charge of bastardy. Wyant returned home after posting a $1,000 [$29,000] bail. In Nelsonville, Charles Van Voorhis sold 50 chances at $1 [$30] each to win a scene he crafted with stuffed birds and squirrels. Elijah Warren of North Highlands, at 70, took his first train ride, from Cold Spring to Garrison. He said his daughter told him to keep his head inside the window. "Dear Lord, how we did sail!" he said. "After I got settled, I could have rode clean to [New] York." 125 Years Ago (March 1900) Michael Pendergrast, 48, the brother of George Pendergrast of Cold Spring, was killed in the railroad tunnel south of Anthony's Nose. He was clearing the ceiling of hanging ice when he was struck by a southbound express. Pendergrast had been employed by the railroad for 25 years and left a widow and eight children. Iona Island, the popular picnic resort, was purchased by the federal government to us...

"I think in many ways the pattern is the least important part of conducting. It's much more about showing what the music should be doing, not beating four. If it were just a matter of keeping time, we could use a flashing red light. That's not what your job is. Your job is to encourage and show the music physically. I believe very strongly that the conducting gesture is nothing more than your vocal process externalized.”Chester L. Alwes holds degrees in music from Hanover College, Union Theological Seminary School of Sacred Music, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before joining the University of Illinois faculty in 1982, he taught at the College of Wooster and the University of Rochester/Eastman School of Music. Prior to his retirement in 2011 from the University of Illinois, Dr. Alwes taught graduate courses in choral literature, seminars on the works of J. S Bach and Henry Purcell and graduate and undergraduate conducting. From 1982-2009, he was conductor of the U. of I. Concert Choir, taking over the Women's Glee Club prior to his retirement. In addition, he frequently conducted the University's Oratorio Society, Summer Chorus, and the Illinois Summer Youth Music Senior Chorus. In 1996, he founded the Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana (BACH), an ensemble drawn from the University and local community that specialized in music of the 17th and 18th centuries. As a choral conductor, Dr. Alwes was known for his innovative programming, his sensitivity to tone and musical line, and his dedication to the musical growth of his singers. He is the author of A History of Western Choral Music (2 vols., Oxford University Press, 2015-16), Handel's Messiah: the Complete Solo Variants (Roger Dean Music, 2009), the chapter on Choral Music of the Romantic era in the Cambridge Companion to Choral Music, Andre De Quadros, ed. We are live from Birmingham! Big up all the Brummies that came out! Great to take the podcast out in the road and meet some of our lovely listeners! We're talking storms, Christmas excitement and exam “tactics” - some of which are very questionable - Shhh! Hit play and enjoy the LIVE episode recorded with an audience at the Glee Club in Birmingham!
Christmas is coming and what more could we ask for than a truly chaotic, non-canonical episode of Glee. This is the infamous S5E8, "Previously Unaired Christmas." While Glee's Christmas episodes are generally beloved by fans, this is not one of them. In an alternate version of Lima, Ohio where The Glee Club gets things done, the New Directions are preparing for the Annual Christmas Decoration competition while also planning a living Nativity Scene for the school. On the East Coast, Santana joins Rachel and Kurt for a New York Christmas and Rachel lands them part-time gigs as elves at a local mall. Unfortunately, the Mall Santa is a full-time creep who threatens to ruin their holiday spirit. Let's not take strangers home, kids. Maybe this episode is camp or maybe it's just bad. That's for you to decide now. Don't worry, at the end we share some of our Christmas movie recommendations for a much-needed palate cleanser. “When people talk about what skills kids are lacking in America these days, two of the skills that come up a lot are the ability to listen to each other and have some empathy for each other. Some people would say it's not just kids that are lacking those skills; it might be what is really missing from our society. I think choir is the best subject to teach those skills.”Hailed by The Oregonian for providing “the finest choral concerts in Portland in recent memory,” Ethan Sperry is the Director of Choral Activities at Portland State University, where he conducts the world-renowned Chamber Choir and leads undergraduate and graduate programs in conducting. He is also the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Oregon Repertory Singers, one of America's most distinguished adult choruses. Choirs under his direction have performed at over a dozen ACDA and NAfME Conferences, won over thirty awards and medals at international choir competitions on four continents, and sung at The Hollywood Bowl, The Kennedy Center, and the United Nations. Under his direction in 2013 The Portland State Chamber Choir became the first American Choir ever to win the Grand Prix at the Seghizzi International Choral Contest in Italy, and in 2017 they became the first American choir to win the Grand Prix at the Bali International Choral Festival, the largest choral gathering in Asia. Sperry has recorded albums for the Naxos and Gothic labels. A prolific arranger of World Music for choirs, Dr. Sperry is the editor of the Global Rhythms series for Earthsongs Music, one of the best-selling choral series in the world, and is also published by Hal Leonard. Sperry is also a frequent collaborator with film composer AR Rahman and has appeared as a guest conductor for him numerous times including at Bollywood Night at the Hollywood Bowl and the 2008 Filmfare Awards, the Indian equivalent of the Oscars. He also serves as a consultant for the KM Music Conservatory in Chennai, the first classical music school in India, which opened in 2009.He has earned a bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Harvard College and Masters and Doctoral degrees in Choral Conducting from the University of Southern California. Prior to moving to Oregon, Sperry served for 10 years on the faculty of Miami University in Ohio where he conducted the Men's Glee Club, Collegiate Chorale, and Global Rhythms Ensemble. But how did he retain his seat throughout Labour's darkest years when colleagues around him were losing theirs? One of the most likeable MPs in the Commons was a Shadow Minister but didn't get appointed to the frontbench after the election. He talks openly and honestly about the mixed feelings he has about Labour finally forming a government, but not being a minister in it. A massive football fan, Toby also reveals which football manager he thinks he'd most be like if he chairs the Environmental Audit Committee. This week on Glee on the Rocks we're parsing one of the greatest questions of human history: are you a Katy or are you a Gaga? This is S5E4, "A Katy or a Gaga." Nationals is looming and the latest competition, Throat Explosion, are stepping on the New Directions' niche of being "outsiders." Instead of dividing the New Directions into boys and girls for this week's Glee Club lesson, Mr. Schue opts to separate them into "Katy Perrys" and "Lady Gagas" in order to push them out of their comfort zones. It makes sense in the episode...kind of. Over in New York, Kurt Hummel is on a mission to get our of his own comfort zone and cross an item off his NYC bucket list by starting a band. Something he definitely has time for between work and classes. But the will the unforgettable and wildly talented Starchild (aka Adam Lambert) be too much for Kurt's ego to handle? Also there's relationship drama, because of course there is. So, are you a Katy or a Gaga? Or do you refuse to fit into the pop girl binary? Subscribers to Fandom on the Rocks will gain access to our bonus mini (and not so mini!) episodes, where we dive deeper into the behind the scenes of Glee, our days in the original fandom, and our other fandom interests. Is it all over, or just the start of new beginnings? The Glee Club is dealing with the aftermath of a disastrous showing at sectionals, but the upside ... Rachel wows in NY, Kurt gets a shot at redemption, Brittany's new love interest, Artie joins the band, Tina joins the Cheerios and Jenna and Kevin have all the fun inside stories!Plus, Jenna reveals this episode has one of her favorite Kurt performances ever and the reason Kevin was freaking out during the filming of "Don't Dream It's Over."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility ... and great duets! A love triangle, a crime to solve, the Warblers are back, and a Secret Society of Superheroes?! Jenna and Kevin are back to unpack an action-packed episode, including the scene that gave Kevin anxiety re-watching, concerns they had during the paint-throwing scene, fan theories about Blam (or Slaine), and Becca Tobin's cringe-worthy wardrobe malfunction story from Becca herself that you have to hear!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's the one that we want! The Glee Club's production of Grease is here, and it's a crowd-pleaser! Jenna and Kevin break it all down, and there is a lot to get to! Jenna has the scoop on filming Beauty School Dropout and Look At Me I'm Sandra Dee, including a behind-the-scenes tale about a cast field trip wearing their on-set pajamas! This week on Glee on the Rocks we're talking Season 5, Episode 2, "Tina in the Sky with Diamonds." The Glee Club is back on deck tackling the music of The Beatles in what is definitely not part two of the season premiere. Tina Cohen-Chang is on a quest for Prom Queen glory, but will a slushie catastrophe ruin her night? But at least she has the New Directions to back her up. Over in New York, Kurt is navigating the complexities of indie band auditions and rampant jealousy as Glee introduces us to Elliott Gilbert, aka Starchild. Rachel faces her own uncertainties as she waits for Funny Girl news while Santana is the first of the New York Crew to break-through with a paid gig. Will Tina rise above the high school pettiness and drama (come on, it's Glee), and can Rachel Berry's Broadway dreams survive the cut (come on, it's Glee)? Guess you'll have to tune in to find out. The halls of McKinley High are ringing with the first notes of a new season of Glee. This week we're talking Season 5, Episode 1, "Love Love Love." The New Directions are given one of their biggest assignments yet: The Beatles. Mr. Schuester has Nationals in his sights (though maybe not his timetable) and challenges the kids to master the Beatles' catalogue over two weeks. But one Blaine Anderson has even bigger things on his mind: a proposal that could change everything. With Rachel's Broadway aspirations hanging in the balance and the Glee Club's chances to become a show choir dynasty closing in, this season is set up to be another chaotic ride through storylines and Glee's enduring quirks. Welcome to Season 5 of Glee and Glee on the Rocks. Fearlessly and forever. The Glee Club is "so emotional" over the loss of Whitney Houston and getting ready to say goodbye to their high school years, so leave it to Mr. Schue to assign a project. That's right, it's an electrifying tribute to the legendary Whitney Houston, and it starts strong with the opening performance of "How Will I Know" … a goose-bump-inducing number which leads Kevin and Jenna to wonder why Amber didn't get any solos this episode. Plus, the song Kevin hated doing at the time, the scoop on the scene added to perhaps squash off-camera rumors, and the song they only had minutes to learn before shooting, so they hid the lyrics behind Jenna's back. Literally! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
