Unlimited Business Wisdom Ep #148 With Anthony Butler
Anthony Butler is the founder of the digital marketing agency Can-Do Ideas and author of Primal Storytelling, Marketing for Humans. He is a highly regarded expert in brand storytelling and digital marketing. Anthony graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, and the US Army Ranger School. He is a combat veteran and commanded an infantry company in Iraq during the invasion of Baghdad. He is also a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blackbelt and currently resides in Montana with his wife and two sons. What problem do you solve? Anthony helps companies get more website traffic and build their social media followers which increases their customer base. Show Notes: Anthony feels that the big problem is that businesses do “random acts of marketing” and don't have a strategic plan or a business process that helps them create content. It's getting harder and harder to distinguish yourself and get noticed. It takes a real plan. Marketers need to think about the mix of emotions that are in the sales situation and then bring that into their marketing. You need to start with building trust. You need to start with stories so that people get to know you and trust you. People buy emotionally and then justify with logic. Stories have the same basic format. With primal storytelling, a business uses the basic format and fits in the details about their business. We start with an origin story. It's about where we come from and how you got started. It helps people know you. Next is your vision story. It is about what you are bringing to the world. It helps people connect with what you are trying to accomplish. Many people will connect with just this part of your story. The transformation stories are the case stories. It's about how you've helped and did you produce results. The fourth part is the storyline. Think of it like your favorite TV show. It will have your underlying theme. Primal Storytelling is Tribe + Primal Urges + Stories Anthony Butler's Best Small Business Tip: Understand who your audience is and then make a strategic marketing plan. Anthony Butler is the founder of a successful marketing agency, but his wake-up call came when a CEO fired them for not getting an ROI on their spend. This led him to examine why some content performs and others don't. He realized that most of the time, it has to do with personality and connection. He delved into evolutionary psychology and discovered that humans have vestiges of urges left inside us, such as the need for connection and meaning behind the things we buy. As a marketer, understanding these primal emotions and connecting them to your audience makes it easier to create content that moves the needle and connects with your audience. This revelation led him to write "Primal Storytelling: Marketing for Humans," a book that highlights the importance of putting a face and heart into marketing. On this Predictable B2B Success episode, host Vinay Koshy and guest Anthony Butler delve into the power of primal storytelling in driving predictable business growth. They discuss the importance of emotional connection with audiences and the steps involved in implementing the Primal Storytelling system for effective content marketing. Primal Storytelling: Marketing for Humans by Anthony Butler About the Book: “I woke up to my mother's screams” These are the first words of Anthony Butler's Primal Storytelling. From a fire in Montana to the streets of Fallujah, Iraq, to the war for attention among 1.5 billion websites globally, Butler proves time and again that stories are the most effective way to capture human attention. Two years into running his own digital agency, Butler was stunned when a new client left. The work was good, they said, but the results weren't consistent. So Butler set out to fix it—to design a reliable digital marketing system that would always come out ahead. The result is an approach that combines evolutionary psychology with age-old story techniques to create high-performing digital content that cuts through the noise. Whether you're competing for local foot traffic or global downloads, Primal Storytelling will help you forge authentic connections with your audience, improve your brand performance in social media and SEO, and supercharge your content results. In this episode of Zero to CEO, I speak with Anthony Butler, a serial entrepreneur and author, about implementing an extraordinary content marketing system into your business using primal storytelling. We discuss the current state of marketing and the challenges businesses face in cutting through the noise. Random acts of marketing won't cut it anymore. Instead, a strategic marketing system is crucial for achieving long-term success. We dive into the number one mistake companies make in their marketing efforts and the power of evolutionary psychology in crafting a brand story that resonates with your audience. We also talk about the importance of having a marketing system in place and practical tips for getting started in creating your own marketing system and telling your brand's primal story. Join us for an insightful conversation on how to take your marketing to the next level and grow your business in 2023 and beyond.
In part 2 of the conversation, branding expert Anthony Butler defines primal storytelling and explains how he uses basic human psychology to create marketing content. Humans tend to make decisions based on emotions and justify their actions after the fact with logic. Anthony's approach to marketing goes beyond Search Engine Optimization. He dives deep into why people make the choices they do and identifies what basic needs must be met. When companies are able to use their unique skill set to provide a service or product people need, that's where the magic happens. Primal storytelling in marketing uses a message that is easy to understand for the specific tribe an organization is trying to reach. These messages are typically tied to human emotions and commonly held experiences within the group. Instead of appealing to the masses, Anthony encourages startups to target a niche group that could benefit from what is being offered. Taking a more human approach to sales significantly increases the likelihood that people will want to do business with you. Being your authentic self in business may seem risky, and it can be depending on the situation. But usually clients prefer more personal interactions and online content. The power of storytelling pervades many aspects of the human experience. By harnessing poignant stories as a tool for sales, business owners tap into an ancient art that speaks directly to the heart. Anthony Butler is the founder of digital marketing agency Can Do Ideas and the creator of the Primal Storytelling Content System. As an expert in brand storytelling, he uses his education from West Point Military Academy and Ranger School as well as his experiences in army combat and multiple startup businesses to help companies create powerful marketing content. When Anthony first began his career in sales, he was largely self-taught. He also sought the mentorship of an experienced leader who imparted valuable wisdom about being honest. This may seem counterintuitive in an industry many believe is built on manipulation and stretching the truth. High volume sellers figure out what a person needs and strategizes how to get it for them. Some of the best advice he received was about the necessity of building strong relationships within his personal network. A strong, supportive network of like-minded individuals can be the difference between failure and success for a startup, especially within the first few years.

Whomever advised Zuma on how to handle himself when providing testimony to the Zondo Commission Inquiry in to State Capture needs their head read. The first rule when you’re on the record, is to stick to a script: keep it short and clear. Zuma’s testimony was the precise opposite. Another critical rule, especially when you’re appearing on live television, is to pay close attention to your body language. Nowadays a few minutes on Youtube turns anyone into an expert on "exposing" liars. Zuma’s testimony was classic deception down to the fake cough, mouth cover and nose touch. In this episode of the Rational Perspective podcast we draw on Anthony Butler's excellent Ramaphosa biography to provide context to an incoherent couple of hours when SA's fuzzy minded former president increased his prospect of incarceration. - Alec Hogg

Chapter 1
Loser Jamie Koe N.W.T. curling star Jamie Koe is apologizing for his team's drunken behaviour in an Alberta bonspeil that led to them being disqualified and kicked out of a curling club. Koe and teammates Ryan Fry, Chris Schille and DJ Kidby were kicked out and disqualified from the Red Deer Curling Classic for getting too drunk during the event. On Monday, Koe and Schille both issued public apologies on Twitter to fans and event staff on Twitter. During the team's match in the 'B' draw — a consolation round — Fry broke three brooms. Koe said that he removed himself from the match because he was too drunk to play, leaving his team shorthanded. After the match, Fry put a hole in the wall of one of the locker rooms at the Pidherney Curling Club in Red Deer, Alta. Team Koe was then kicked out of the arena and forfeited their next match, said Wade Thurber, the manager of the curling club. Thurber said that Fry has offered to pay for the damages to the locker room. Winner Jessie Rix and Anthony Butler from New York City One of the best stories of the New York City Marathon will involve a blind runner who lost his vision, his sighted trainer and running partner, and their serendipitous love story.
Anthony is a co-founder (with his Father) of Mars Bioimaging Limited which produces 3D colour x-rays (spectral molecular imaging). This involves the intersection of high energy physics with clinical medicine. In this interview we talk his childhood and background and what led him to work in this area. We also talk about the technology itself and how it works and then dive down a rabbit hole to discuss what the future of health care and scanning might look like in 30, 50, or 100 years as technology improves. Finally we chat about Anthony's purpose and real reason for continuing to develop the technology further. https://www.marsbioimaging.com/mars/

Biographies account for at least half the books I own, a legacy of long held fascination for learning about people, a subject to which I devote a good chunk of my leisure time. Latest investment was in a 413 page masterpiece by Anthony Butler - his superb biography on South African president Cyril Ramaphosa. Classically trained Butler, who read a PPE at Oxford and has a PhD from Cambridge, wrote the book in 2008 after taking a nine month sabbatical from the University of Cape Town, where he is a professor in political studies. He used the time to interview those close to this very private, deeply thoughtful politician who has, and is, playing such a massive role in his homeland. Butler returned to the manuscript in 2013, providing an insightful postscript. He is working on another update, but waiting for the updated edition makes little sense. Because his biography opens an important window into an enigmatic statesman, offering a perfect antidote to the fake news and whispering campaigns of our times – and providing balance to the knee-jerk of event-driven reporting which often misguides perceptions. I’d wager that, like me, by the end of Butler’s book you'll end up feeling that Project Rebuild South Africa couldn’t be in better hands.
Phil and Anthony Butler make a father-son team that's ambitiously leading the efforts at MARS BioImaging as CEO and CMO, respectively. They have their sights set on improving the current state of medical imaging in an unprecedented way through the use of spectroscopy and 3D imaging. Modern x-ray technology has the ability to identify tissue density and shape, but not to distinguish between different types of material, or to identify cell-specific labels attached for the purposes of research or drug therapies. The use of spectroscopy, however, enables us to see inside the body at the atomic level, which is a capability that's paving the way for a deeper understanding of disease processes and prevention, as well as applications in personalized medicine. Most recently, the team at BioImaging has been looking at samples of excised plaque from patients who've suffered from a medical event such as stroke or heart attack. By scanning these samples using spectroscopic technology, they are not only able to determine the amount of fat versus calcium versus tissue but obtain and rotate in 3D space color-coded images of these samples. Tune in to learn more about the groundbreaking applications of this technology in clinical medicine and research, and send your inquiries to info@bioimaging.com.

Anthony Butler, a native of the Bronx in New York City, lost his sight eight years ago. For many people who lose their ability to see in adulthood, the decline is inevitable and gradual. Often a degenerative disease will chip away at someone’s vision to the point that they become legally blind. That’s not what happened to Anthony. One second, Anthony was hanging out with friends. The next second, his sight was gone. But even through a series of struggles—learning to navigate a new world, getting kicked out his home—Anthony found ways to turn his life around. One of those ways: running. It was last spring when Anthony met Kate Dixon on a group run in Central Park with Achilles International. Neither was a great runner, but something clicked when they began running together that made them decide to get serious for their own, important reasons. In this episode, we explore what happens when you lose something so essential. And what, perhaps, you might gain in its place. The biggest people who will be hurt are people who are receiving other federal subsidies, so the biggest people who will be hurt are working families and seniors.” “Food stamps supports farmers– that’s the purpose of it! This money goes back into farms. Food stamps also dramatically support local economies. “ –Anthony Butler of St. John’s Bread & Life on Straight, No Chaser
