The idea behind this show is pretty simple: We invite scholars, makers, and professionals out to brunch for an informal conversation about their work, and then we turn those brunches into a podcast. It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it.Janne Matláry is a professor of international politics in the Department of Political Science at the University of Oslo and the Norwegian Defence University College. A specialist in European foreign and defense policy as well as international security, she was Norway’s deputy foreign minister from 1997–2000, the first Catholic woman to hold a high government post in Norway since the Protestant Reformation. She has also served on the board of trustees of the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights and is a life member of the Pontifical Academy of Science.Janne was in residence at Notre Dame’s Institute for Advanced Study as a director’s fellow for several weeks this past fall. She and host Ted Fox began their conversation drawing on one of her most recent books—Hard Power in Hard Times: Can Europe Act Strategically?, published in 2018 by Palgrave Macmillan—with Janne providing a general sense of the model on which the European Union has been built. From there, they talked about the differences between modern and postmodern states, the external and internal challenges facing European democracies today, and the U.S.-EU relationship, particularly with respect to NATO.

Yasir Arman is leading Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), a politico-military movement advocating for a just, democratic and secular Sudan. Arman joined SPLM in 1986 and has spent virtually his whole adult life fighting for a Sudan for all Sudanese irrespective of their ethnicity, race or religion. Some say it’s the most forgotten of all forgotten conflicts. Blue Nile and South Kordofan, the areas that were left out when South Sudan gained independence, are in their 6th year of civil war with the Sudanese regime in Khartoum. Every day, civilians are subjected to the government’s aerial bombardments, terrorizing the civilians and forcing hundreds of thousands to flee. The people are suffering severe hunger, and aid organizations are not allowed access by the Sudanese regime. The humanitarian situation in the areas of South Kordofan (Nuba Mountains), South Blue Nile and Darfur is as bad as in Syria, Iraq and South Sudan. Still, the conflict is often overseen by journalists, diplomats and the international community. The event was hosted by the Norwegian People's Aid- Norsk Folkehjelp, Støttegruppe for Sudan og Sør-Sudan (SFS), Fellesrådet for Afrika - Norwegian Council for Africa, the Oslo Center, and documentary film festival Human Rights Human Wrongs.

Kjell Magne Bondevik is the former Prime Minister of Norway, a position he held twice from 1997-2000 and from 2001-2005. Following his life in politics, Mr. Bondevik became president of The Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights. In early 2006, then United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed him as the new Special Humanitarian Envoy for the Horn of Africa, an area that includes the troubled regions of Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Somalia. As an ordained minister and president of The Oslo Center, Mr. Bondevik is deeply involved in promoting international human rights and interfaith dialogue. He argues that instead of aggravating conflicts, religions—by focusing on common values—can join forces and make constructive contributions to conflict resolution. Mr. Bondevik joins the Council to discuss his organization’s work in bringing together influential politicians, religious leaders and academics into a much needed dialogue on religion, tolerance, diversity, women’s rights and democracy. He will discuss his recent partnership with the former President of Iran, Mohammad Khatami, and how the two have been working together to increase understanding, reduce tensions, counter stereotypes, and promote peaceful dialogue between the Islamic world and the West.
