He was the greatest chapter of my life and the best adventure. This is a deeply personal episode as I share the story of how Chuy inspired Irresistible You, how we had to say goodbye after almost 16 years, and how we ALL need to start living life just like a dog.

Kate explores the power of color in lighting design—how it shapes human experiences, evokes emotion, and influences spatial perception. Drawing from her background in theatrical and architectural lighting, she shares insights on the intentional use of color as a storytelling tool. From museum exhibits to built environments, Kate discusses how light enhances materials, the cultural significance of color, and why thoughtful color selection is often more effective than color-changing lighting. Whether you're a designer, architect, or simply fascinated by how light impacts our world, this episode will change the way you see color.Topics Covered Theatrical vs. architectural lighting design The emotional and psychological effects of color The role of daylight and natural color variations How historical architecture was designed with lighting in mind Using light to enhance materials rather than overpower them Cultural perceptions of color The importance of intentionality in color selection Technical advances in color lighting and controls Balancing aesthetics and practicality in lighting projects Sustainability and responsible color application in lightingKey Takeaways Color in lighting is more than just RGB. Color is present in all light, and even subtle shifts in white light can dramatically impact perception. Lighting is a storytelling tool. The way color interacts with a space, material, and time of day shapes how people feel and engage with an environment. Cultural and contextual meaning of color matters. Different cultures perceive colors differently, and designers must consider these associations when making choices. Static vs. dynamic color use. Not all projects require dynamic color-changing lighting; sometimes, carefully selecting a fixed hue is more effective. Lighting design is a team effort. Successful implementation requires collaboration between lighting designers, architects, and other stakeholders.

Merrick is a Distinguished Professor at Georgia Tech. His list of academic and commercial accomplishments are longer than your arm (see below) but today we're putting his immense analytical skills to work to determine the questions we should ask ourselves when we're not sure about which way to go. Merrick is the co-author of a new book, The Heart of Innovation, which guides start-ups and the humans that lead them how they can go about being themselves. In today's conversation we discuss: What should you do when you feel stuck? How blind spots keep us stuck and how to find out what your blind spots are The importance of both radical candor and unconditional positive regard …and, most importantly, how Merrick helped to inspire the Crazy Money podcast!
How do you know if your good idea is a good idea? What's the secret sauce behind turning a good idea into an innovative company? Why are roughly only 10 percent of startups successful? Furst, a beloved Professor and director of the Center for Deliberate Innovation at George Tech, has answers that we can all apply to the way we think about innovation. He's founded companies and his book, The Heart of Innovation, was recently published. Cal set up a creative way to look at the topic, bringing in his pal, Adam McGraw, to join the conversation. McGraw recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of his startup – CREW -- which uses authentic connections to enable CEOs and senior executives to get the most out of themselves. Cal has seen CREW in action and come away Impressed. He wants to know what Furst thinks. Check it out . . . and apply the takeaways to your own life.

James invites Merrick Furst, an influential figure in his academic past and a beacon in the world of innovation, to discuss the intricacies of "authentic demand" as outlined in Furst's latest book, "The Heart of Innovation: A Field Guide for Navigating to Authentic Demand." Together, they venture into the exploration of how one can identify and validate the true potential behind an idea.Throughout the episode, the duo examines the nature of "authentic demand" - the genuine need or desire for a product or service in the market. They pose and address pivotal questions: Can you accurately determine whether there's a real market need for your idea? What are the elements that people consider non-negotiable in their lives, and how do these essentials drive innovation?Drawing from his extensive experience in launching companies and nurturing ideas to fruition, Furst - along with insights from coauthors Matt Chanoff, Daniel Sabbah, and Mark Wegman - shares his approach to evaluating ideas not just for their novelty, but for their ability to meet a deep-rooted demand.Listeners will gain an understanding of the crucial aspects that turn an idea into a product or service that people cannot envision living without. The conversation extends beyond the theoretical into practical, actionable strategies that entrepreneurs and creatives can implement to ensure their innovations align with the indispensable needs of their target audience.Buy The Heart of Innovation: A Field Guide for Navigating to Authentic Demand!-----------What do YOU think of the show? Dr. Brett Furst, Psy.D, LMFT specializes in treating adult and adolescent adoptees who struggle with a variety of issues, both related and not related to their adoption. Adoptees are almost twice as likely to suffer from addiction, mental health, ADHD, and a variety of other mental health related issues than their non-adopted counterparts, while also experiencing a distant scarcity of specialized services to help them. To better serve this population, Dr. Brett has created some of the first treatment protocols specific to adult/adolescent adoptees, and frequently speaks to and trains other clinicians around the country to better serve this population. In addition to his adoption work, Dr. Brett Furst focuses on using a Gestalt lens to help clients find their authentic selves through the exploration of their attachments, external messages, and, most importantly, who they are not. Dr. Brett holds a B.S. in Child Development from The University of California, Davis, an M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Chapman University, and a Doctorate in Couples and Family Therapy from Alliant International University. Plants of the Gods: Hallucinogens, Healing, Culture and Conservation podcast
In today's episode, we continue learning about tobacco, one of the most widely used mind altering substances. During this two-part discussion, Dr. Plotkin addresses the duality of this well-known plant of the gods. Between its spiritual significance and its ties to addiction, disease and enslavement, the story of tobacco is complicated yet fascinating. In the second half, we'll hear about some of Dr. Plotkin's own experiences with tobacco, and how indigenous peoples in both Mexico and Amazonia employ this sacred plant for healing purposes. Griff FurstTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Griff Furst. Griff is: an actor, a producer, a screenwriter, and a director. In this episode we get his origin story. He shares stories from acting class, and how in a 'domino effect' sort of way, his career got kicked off from those classes. We chat about being a producer in that role's various incarnations, where he finds his inspirations for screenwriting, the difficulties managing a film set as it's director, and what he loves about acting. We cover quite a lot here, but it is all in the name if FUN! We touch a little bit on what it was like growing up on different sets with parents in the business, and lastly, we discuss his newest T-H-R-E-E projects!Available now on VOD everywhere is Devil's Peak, starring Billy Bob Thornton, Robin Wright, and Jackie Earle Haley.Available September (ish) is 57 Seconds, starring Morgan Freeman and Josh Hutcherson.Keep your eyes peeled later this year is the long awaited sequel Half Baked 2, starring Jeff Ross and Harland Williams!
