When you hear the word “grandparents”, what comes into your mind? For me, it's someone who loves their grandchildren unconditionally. And they just want to GIVE all the time. There's some truth to the phrase “If Mom and Dad say no, go ask Grandma!”. “Grandma” brings up an image of an older woman, in the kitchen baking cookies. “Grandpa” means the old man out in the garage, tinkering with the lawn mower and having me “help” by handing him a wrench or a screwdriver. But those are just stereotypes. And sometimes real life doesn't match up with the way we commonly think of how grandparents are supposed to be. As a little girl, Gwen saw her grandparents all the time. And she knew her grandpa could sometimes be a not very nice person. Then one day, Gwen's grandma decided she'd had enough. If you're a parent, you know that the birth of your first child is an incredible experience. For Steve and Camre, it didn't happen at all the way they expected it to. Steve got the call at work that Camre was at the hospital and had already delivered the baby. He dropped everything and drove there frantically, and he was confused because the baby wasn't due for another 7 weeks. He ran into the hospital, and the first thing he saw was his newborn son, Gavin. He quickly scrubbed up and held him for the first time. What Steve didn't know was that, at that moment, Camre was being put into a medically induced coma in order to save her life. He also didn't know that when she would come out of that coma, she would have no memory of anything. She would not recognize Steve, and she wouldn't even know she had just had their baby. This is a Flashback episode. Steve originally told this story on the podcast about 5 years ago, so at the end of today's episode we'll get to hear from modern-day Steve, and he'll tell us what's happened since then. Asian elephants are incredibly huge animals. An adult elephant can be roughly 9 to 11 feet tall. Just standing next to one is pretty intimidating. But imagine being on top of one of them. It would be like if you had an average size man, then another man was standing on the first man's shoulders. Then you would be sitting on that second man's shoulders. That's pretty high up. For Leilani, it was a dream from her childhood to interact with a full-size Asian elephant. And that's where she found herself – in Thailand, on a mountain trail, on top of one of those huge animals. And then things went wrong. The thing about living in an apartment or renting a room is… you have to deal with other people. Depending on how the building is laid out, it's almost like living with strangers. If your next door neighbor accidentally starts a fire, your home could burn too. If the person above you has a flood, it's very likely that you'll be dealing with that problem as well. Not to mention, what if your neighbors in this same building are jerks? Or they have 20 drunk people at their place for a party? Or they practice their drums at 3 am? These are all things to consider, and you might not even be able to research all of this before moving in. My guest today is Tiffany. She was in a different country, and she rented a room to live in. There were other rooms, and other people living in those rooms, and they were mostly nice. But there was one guy who was not so nice. And he was pretending to be the landlord. Imagine you're out in public, just going about your day. Let's say you're in the grocery store. And as you're pushing your shopping cart down the aisle, you notice a tall man, maybe 10 feet ahead of you, looking at the items on the shelf. And suddenly, that man collapses to the floor. What would you do? Most people don't really know what they would do, until a situation like that actually comes up. Some people just freeze. If it happens in a busy place, some people will just keep walking. There's this interesting psychological effect called diffusion of responsibility – that just means that everyone who sees something like this happen just assumes someone else will help. But the end result is that no one takes action. But then there's another type of reaction. There's the person who sees an emergency like that, and their first thought is “what can I do to help that person?”. My guest in this episode is Kevin, and that was his reaction. He was just finishing up a round of golf and was walking back to the clubhouse. And he saw that someone was on the ground. This is a Flashback episode. Kevin told this story on the podcast 5 years ago. So afterward, you'll hear what he's been up to since then. I've had more than 200 people come on this podcast and share a story of something crazy that they've been through. If nothing else, I've learned one thing. Life can change in an instant. For Dan, he's just enjoying the outdoors on a trail in Alaska, and suddenly he's on his back with the snout of a grizzly bear in his face. Amy was just at work in her office in Oklahoma – then just seconds later she's trapped under a pile of rubble and a bomb blew up her building. Kennedy was just driving her car – then she loses control and finds herself literally hanging by her leg from the power line. These are all regular people, just like you and me. They were just going about their life, and suddenly they got a big scary surprise. My guest today is Carly. She actually lives not far from me so we recently met in person. Carly was out with her family once, just driving around looking at the neighborhood Christmas lights. And then she spotted someone who was in desperate need of help. Millions of people in Sudan are facing hunger and possible famine due to the war between the Sudan Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces militia, which has been going on for almost two years. The country has the ability to feed itself if farmers could use the most fertile land, between the White and the Blue Nile rivers in El Gezira state. Although a massive irrigation scheme has been in place there for a century, the past choice of cash crops, along with mismanagement by the government have meant Sudan has not been able to benefit from the potential of this agricultural heartland, even before the current war saw most of the farming community flee.Guest: Professor Nisrin Elamin.
We all have a few scary moments in life that we'll never forget. You know what I mean – a time when something is happening, or about to happen, and you know that the outcome could be really bad, and it's happening so fast you don't even have time to react. It's almost like you're watching a movie, and just waiting to see how it's gonna end. One moment like that for me was several years ago, when we lived up north. Winters in Maine can be pretty brutal, and part of that is that sometimes the roads can be icy and dangerous for driving. I remember one day I was driving on a rural country road, just two lanes, and the weather conditions were not good. There was some snow, but I also knew that the road had patches of ice. So I was moving along pretty carefully. Then I saw coming my direction was a small pickup truck. But he had already hit a big icy section and he was coming downhill toward me. And he was just spinning in circles. This guy had absolutely no control, just doing 360s as he came down this hill in my direction. And there really was nothing I could do either. I just figured “Ok, here we go, this is gonna happen I guess”. I wasn't too concerned about getting injured because we weren't going at high speeds – I just knew that a collision was about to happen. But amazingly, as this truck finally reached me, he was somehow able to stay on his side of the road while he kept going in circles right past me. I watched in my rear view mirror as he eventually regained control, and we each went on our way. Just part of life when you live in a cold climate. My guest today is Marsha. She had a moment kind of like that once. She looked up and saw headlights coming her direction. But it wasn't a car coming at her. It was a plane. Today's story takes place off the coast of Somalia, a country in Africa. If you look at Africa on a map, you'll see Somalia on the east coast, right on the water of the Indian Ocean. In fact, of all the countries in Africa, Somalia is the one with the longest coastline. And for the Americans listening, to give you an idea of how big it is, Somalia is almost the same size as the US state of Texas. But here's the thing about Somalia. It's considered to be one of the poorest countries in the world. I mean, here in Florida, we have homeless people. Some of you know, I work with a group here to help the homeless population get the things they need. But in Somalia, literally half of the people in that country don't have a home or any kind of permanent residence. This means there are millions of people who are desperate, and hungry, and they're vulnerable to abuse. And just on the north side of Somalia is the Gulf of Aden. This is a very popular water route for large ships carrying lots of cargo, headed either to or from the Suez Canal. In fact, each year there are around 20,000 of these ships passing by. That's more than 50 ships every single day. So there's a certain sector of the Somali population who sees all this valuable cargo going by each day, and they see an opportunity to make money. These are modern day pirates. They see many of these big ships as easy targets. I mean if there's a large cargo ship carrying manufactured goods, they just want to get from point A to point B. They typically aren't equipped to fight off or defend their ship from being hijacked and held for ransom. But today we're going to hear a story from Robert. There was a time he was on one of those big ships, off the coast of Somalia. The pirates saw it as easy money. What they didn't see was that Robert's ship, the one being attacked, was a warship in the US Navy. This is a flashback episode – Robert told this story on the podcast a few years ago. So hang around to hear what's going on with him more recently. Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Transcription was done by James Lai. 2-11-25 Tonight we're talking with Kirubell Araya, owner of The Heritage Winery, in New Jersey. Kirubell has taken over the making of t'ej from his father, and is now located in the old location for Melovino Meadery. The Heritage Winery has been open since 1978, making it one of the oldest honey wineries in the US. Araya Yibrehu, Kirubell's father, is a pioneer in bringing Ethiopian cuisine and Tej to the United States. He opened Sheba in 1978, argueably the first Ethiopian restaurant in the US. Over the years he opened several more restaurants, with the most renowned being the Blue Nile in NYC, which became an icon for Ethiopian food lovers. Beyond this, Araya was also a trailblazer in crafting and commercializing Tej n the US, helping to preserve and share this ancient tradition with a wider audience. This would later become the Heritage Winery. Kirubell followed in his father's entrepreneurial footsteps, and grew up immersed in the family business. He graduated from Morehouse College in 2010, and went into commodities brokering, but came back to his roots. He joined the family venture in 2013, bringing a fresh vision and new identity to the Heritage Winery. In 2018 he left his job in finance to dedicate himself to expanding the company. The Heritage Winery meads are made with organic, single-source honey from sustainable farms. Each batch is carefully fermented to highlight the rich floral complexity of the honey, balanced with the earthy bitterness of hops, a key ingredient in traditional Tej. Currently they offer Axum Tej, made with wildflower honey, and Saba Tej, crafted from orange blossom honey. They plan to expand into meads that include fruit, coffee and sparkling Tej, moving an ancient drink into the 21st century. Here in Florida, we know about hurricanes. My wife Jeanne and I will never forget Hurricane Elena back in 1985. That storm came into the Gulf of Mexico and just hovered offshore. There were instructions to evacuate because of the danger of high winds and flooding. What made it interesting for us is that Jeanne was pregnant with our first child, and she was at full term. So while everyone else was either leaving town or getting to a safe place, we evacuated to the hospital. That was on Saturday, August the 31st and that's when our baby was born. Everyone said if it was a girl we should choose the name Elena, after the hurricane. Instead, our son's name is David. A few months ago, in the hurricane season of 2024, we had Hurricane Milton to deal with. Since it was headed directly for where we live, we left town with our dogs and spent the week up in Jacksonville. We came back and discovered that, unlike some other people, we had no damage and no flooding. But not everyone fared that well. My guest today is Ber. She lives about an hour or so from me, in a rural part of Florida called Dade City. She's been through lots of hurricanes. But after what happened to her with Hurricane Milton, she probably won't go venturing outdoors at the height of the storm any more. Few things are sadder than seeing a loved one slip gradually into dementia. This is what happened to my grandmother – my mom's mom. She got to the point where she couldn't live on her own any more, but she didn't really have other debilitating health issues. So she didn't need to be in a hospital, or a nursing home. She just needed someone around to help her with daily living, because she would forget things. So my parents converted their garage into a small apartment so she could live there. And she loved this. At the time our two kids were young, maybe 6 and 8, and we'd go over and visit pretty often. We'd be in the main part of the house, and Grandma would ask, “Hey, have you seen my new apartment? Come on, I'll give you the tour!” So we would all go over and she'd show us all around – this is my bed, and this is my chair where I like to sit and read, all the stuff. And then we'd all come back to the main house. And then maybe five minutes later, Grandma would look up like she just thought of something, and ask, “Have you all seen my new apartment? Come on and let me show you!” and we'd just go and take another tour of the apartment. Our kids understood the basics of what was happening, and they just thought it was hilarious. We all just played along each time, because that's what made Grandma happy. But it was also sad to see her gradual decline. My guest today, Kari, could tell that her dad was slipping into dementia. And she wanted to help. But she never expected to see him decline so rapidly. And there was really nothing she could do, because it happened on a 1700 mile road trip. If you'd like to contact Kari, she is in the WWTL podcast Facebook group - https://WhatWasThatLike.com/facebook Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/204 Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Author and industry expert Rob Bates joins Paul for the 8th time in episode #69 of the Paul Zimnisky Diamond Analytics Podcast. The episode begins with Paul airing his frustration over how some retailers are selling lab-grown diamonds. The two then discuss the current state of the larger diamond industry and the evolution of natural and LGD coexisting. Next, Rob shares what he sees as an analog between the debut of online diamond retailers in the 2000's, such as Blue Nile, and the more recent mainstream introduction of LGD. The two go on to discuss treated natural diamonds, the global recession in luxury goods, and how Rob's upcoming 4th book, “Making a Killing in Diamonds,” parallels some of the pertinent issues the diamond and jewelry industry faces.
Lexington, Kentucky. 1 pm on a Friday, Labor Day weekend. Diana, a medical flight nurse, was sitting in a Lear jet. The pilot was unconscious. The co-pilot could not move because he had a broken back. Diana's patient had died on impact. The plane was sitting on Versailles Rd in Lexington, after it had just slid across the road on its belly. The landing gear was gone. The right wing had been ripped off the plane. And now that it had come to a stop, Diana knew she had to get the door open and get people out, because she could hear the crackling of fire, and the cabin was filling with smoke. Except she couldn't stand up, because she had a broken back and two broken legs. This is a Flashback episode. Diana told this story on the podcast more than 5 years ago. So after you hear her amazing story, I'll play a recent conversation we had so you can see what's happened with her since then. If you'd like to contact Diana, her email is: flydi21@hotmail.com. For many parents, having a child in daycare is just part of the daily routine. And choosing a daycare provider for your child can be a pretty involved process. You obviously want to make sure the environment is safe and clean, with staff who are qualified, and that the ratio of caregivers to children is reasonable. And there are a ton of other things to consider, because you are trusting this place with your baby or your toddler – you have to be able to trust that they will make good decisions while caring for your child. Kelli had two children in daycare, and she didn't have any reason to not fully trust that they were both safe. Until one day when she was at work, and she got a phone call. Also, partway through our conversation, I had a surprise for Kelli. She never saw it coming. Note: This episode includes discussion about the death of a child. We are at the end of 2024. It's been a great year for me, and I hope it has been for you too. As you probably know, every episode of What Was That Like ends with a Listener Story. This is just a 5-10 minute personal story, sent in by a listener. I'm always looking for new listener stories, so I'd love for YOU to send one in. Just record it on your phone in a quiet environment and email to me – Scott@WhatWasThatLike.com. And these stories are a very popular part of the show. They're always the very last thing in an episode, so it's worth staying around til the end! And our tradition is, for the last episode of the year, which is today, I put together all of the Listener Stories for that year into one full episode. So today you have more than 3 hours of storytelling. I know you probably can't sit down and listen to all 3 hours at one time, but these are short stories so it's easy to break the episode into bite-size pieces and just listen when you have a chance. So – enjoy these stories, and get ready for the new year because I'm working on a bunch of amazing episodes and crazy stories. Looking forward to seeing you here in 2025. Have you ever seen stories of someone who was born with no arms? I've seen videos and I think maybe even a documentary like that. Usually they will profile one particular person, who is now an adult, and this person lives a full, happy life - with no arms. Which means, of course, that they do a lot of things with their feet. And these people are amazing – they have learned to do almost anything with their feet, that the rest of us rely on our hands for. They cut up their kids' food for them, they drive cars, they compete athletically… it's just their normal, so they've learned how to get stuff done in spite of having no arms. Jeff was not one of those people. He was actually born with both arms. But as a teenager, working a summer job, he was involved in an accident that meant one of his arms was pretty violently pulled off. In this Flashback episode, Jeff talks about how that happened, and what he did in the minutes immediately following the accident. And here's what's kind of funny – Jeff told this story a few years ago here on the podcast, and in spite of how horrifying it is, I have had so many listeners tell me they loved hearing it because Jeff is so funny! And after his story, you'll hear the brief modern-day conversation I recently had with Jeff to find out what he's up to more these days – and it turns out, he's STILL being funny. If you'd like to contact Jeff: jeffbardel@yahoo.com He's also in the WWTL podcast Facebook group: WhatWasThatLike.com/facebook Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/200 Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Content warning for today's episode, which includes a brief discussion of suicidal thoughts. When you think of the word “addiction”, what comes to your mind? I think for most people, the most common thought would be drugs or alcohol. For some people, it's very easy to fall into that. I'm always thankful that I never was interested in smoking, because tobacco addiction is a really difficult thing to beat. And there are other categories – you can be addicted to eating, gambling, dieting, or even petty crimes such as compulsive shoplifting. Today's guest is Fenna. She stumbled into her addiction without even realizing it. In fact, she works in mental health and she didn't even realize that what she was experiencing WAS an addiction. Fenna was addicted to a person. Adam lived in Newtown, Connecticut. He was 20 years old, and had no criminal record. One December morning, before 9:30 am, Adam shot and killed his own mother, Nancy, while she was still in her bed. Her body was later found with four gunshot wounds to the head. Nancy was a gun enthusiast, and had quite a few rifles and handguns. After he killed her, Adam took some of those guns and drove his mother's car to the Sandy Hook Elementary School. The front entrance doors were locked, but he shot his way through the glass panel. He then carried out one of the deadliest school shootings in US history. 26 people were murdered at the school that day. Six of those were adult staff and faculty. The other twenty fatalities were children. All of them were age 6 or 7. One of those children was Emilie Parker, an amazing 6 year old girl. Today you're going to hear from Robbie Parker, Emilie's dad, about what happened to their family that day and afterward. And the famous radio personality that made their grief so much worse. Content warning: this episode includes discussion of child death as a result of a mass shooting If you'd like to contact Robbie, you can do that through his website: https://RobbieParker.net Robbie's book: https://www.amazon.com/Fathers-Fight-Taking-Jones-Reclaiming/dp/1635769833 Alissa's book: https://www.amazon.com/Unseen-Angel-Mothers-Story-Healing/dp/1629722790 Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/198 Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. On this episode, Stassi is joined by C-O-Lo French and Stassi has a long list of items she's dying to discuss starting with "What's In The Rug?!" - Katie Santry's Tiktok rug journey that captivated the whole internet for a few days! Stassi and Lo both detail how they followed the Tiktoks live and what they think the truth is. Hopefully Katie keeps the world updated! One of the main questions she's asked at Meet and Greets is what perfume she wears, but she really doesn't wear it often!! Stassi's new goal is to find one main signature scent and make it part of her personality so her kids can remember her by it the way she remembers her grandmother by her perfume. She'll keep everyone posted on the progress. Finally, Stassi is also on the hunt for a Color Analysis professional to come "do her colors" so she can figure out what season she is.
