She emphasizes the need to eliminate unnecessary complexity and create space for thinking and innovation. Lisa shares strategies for challenging assumptions, reversing unproductive rules, and managing time effectively. She also highlights the value of generosity and the difference between managing and leading. Overall, Lisa advocates for a cultural shift towards simplicity and meaningful work. In this conversation, Lisa Bodell and Shannon Cassidy discuss the importance of simplicity and how to eliminate unnecessary rules and tasks in order to create a more efficient and productive work environment. They emphasize the need for leaders to model vulnerability and be open to killing stupid rules. They also discuss the challenges of implementing simplicity when the leader is resistant to change. The conversation covers topics such as identifying and eliminating unnecessary rules, simplifying processes, setting boundaries on time, and the importance of asking quality questions. The key takeaways include the importance of simplicity as a strategy, the need for leaders to empower their teams, the value of questioning why, and the recognition that change is a choice. R.O.G. Takeaway Tips: Eliminating unnecessary complexity and simplifying processes is essential for innovation and creativity. Challenging assumptions and reversing unproductive rules can lead to more effective and efficient work. Managing time is not the same as leading; leaders prioritize meaningful work and create space for thinking. Generosity is not just about giving money, but also about giving time and helping others reach their potential. A cultural shift towards simplicity and meaningful work is necessary for organizations to thrive. Simplicity should be a strategy and a principle in the workplace. Leaders should model vulnerability and be open to killing unnecessary rules. Asking quality questions, such as 'why' and 'what is holding you back,' is important for identifying and eliminating unnecessary tasks. Change is a choice, and being busy is a choice that can be changed. Setting boundaries on time and prioritizing tasks is essential for simplifying and improving productivity. Global in the Granite State

Over the course of the past 170 years, the world has experienced many different forms of terrorism designed to create fear, push for political aims, and recruit followers. Groups of varying political ideologies have used terrorism over the years, making this an issue that never really goes away, it simply morphs and changes. However, one thing remains the same... all of these groups eventually come to an end. It may surprise you that the average lifespan of a terrorist group is 8-10 years, which can seem unbelievable with the staying power of groups like al-Qaeda (founded in the 1980s), the "Provisionals" of the IRA (who used Terrorist attacks in Ireland for over 20 years), and the New People's Army (which has utilized terrorist tactics in the Philippines since 1969). These are the outliers rather than the norm. This episode takes a look at amazing research conducted by Dr. Audrey Kurth Cronin, Director of the Carnegie Mellon Institute for Strategy & Technology, who has collated the ways in which terrorist groups come to an end. Spoiler alert, sometimes these groups morph into something worse, so it is important to understand why terrorist groups exist, what their goals are, and how the global community can work to hasten these groups' turn away from targeting civilians. Take a listen to engage in this global conversation on understanding how terrorism ends. Purchase Dr. Kurth Cronin's book How Terrorism Ends: Understanding the Decline and Demise of Terrorist Campaigns and her second book Power to the People:  How Open Technological Innovation is Arming Tomorrow's Terrorists to dive even deeper into the topic.Audrey Kurth Cronin is Trustees Professor of Security and Technology and Director of the Carnegie Mellon Institute for Strategy & Technology (CMIST).  Cronin's best-known book is How Terrorism Ends: Understanding the Decline and Demise of Terrorist Campaigns (Princeton, 2009), which the New Yorker called a “landmark study.”  Her latest book, Power to the People:  How Open Technological Innovation is Arming Tomorrow's Terrorists (Oxford, 2020), analyzes emerging technologies and devises a new framework for analyzing 21st century military innovation. It was short-listed for the Lionel Gelber prize and won the 2020 Neave prize.    Cronin was a Marshall Scholar from Princeton, earned a DPhil from Oxford, and was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard. Formerly Distinguished Professor at American University, she founded and directed the Center for Security, Innovation and New Technology in Washington, DC.  She also gained accreditation, founded, and ran the International Security graduate program at George Mason University.  She has been director of the core course on War and Statecraft at the National War College, Director of Studies for the Changing Character of War program at Oxford University, and Specialist in Terrorism at the Congressional Research Service. Edgy Ideas

In this podcast, Professor Cary Cooper shares his extensive experience of working to create healthier and happier workplaces. Cary shares his belief that in times of rapid social change, organizational workplaces are more important than ever as sites that can provide healthy environments that support our well-being. Cary identifies key turning points that informed his work; firstly in the 1970s  stress was for the first time identified as a big challenge, and the response was to support the individual to cope with their stress better, e.g. stress management and responses such as today's mindfulness. In the 2008 financial crash and the subsequent 'job restructuring' when organizations stripped their workforce to the minimum, Cary observed a change in workplace responses when a manager said to him that the number one challenge he had was staff retention. This began a shift whereby organizations weren't so concerned with managing individual stress but realized they had to provide workplaces that offered healthy environments where employees could flourish, in order to ensure their well-being, get the best performance from them and to retain them. Cary identifies the line manager as perhaps the key ingredient for a healthy and productive workplace. Most line managers are chosen for their technical ability, and yet their role is vital in terms of people management skills. Reflecting on the UK's focus on growth, he points to the lack of a policy that focuses on this key area of people management; improving this he believes would be vital to increase growth. Cary reflects on his personal journey and shares that his life from an Eastern European Jewish working-class background story continues to impact on him,  citing the constant need to 'prove himself' as the driver of his success. This is a wonderful podcast with one of the great figures of our generation, who has contributed to organizational health and well-being.  Enjoy the listen! Bio: Professor Sir Cary Cooper Cary L. In his address to the IIEA, Mr Ilves discusses security and democracy in the digital era. Mr Ilves outlines the threats, dangers and the imperatives for defending against these challenges. Mr Ilves also discusses the role of the European Union, which he argues is a structure better suited to confront these challenges than a nation-state based approach, particularly for Europe's smaller nation-states. This is the second event in an IIEA project entitled Europe's Digital Future, which is exploring the topic of ‘digital sovereignty' in Europe. As part of this project, which is supported by Google, a year-long programme of events and research is exploring what this concept means, and what future it might herald for the EU and for small, open economies like Ireland. Ian is a prolific thought leader and author, regularly expressing his views on political issues in public speeches, television appearances, and top publications, including Time magazine, where he is the foreign affairs columnist and editor-at-large. His latest book "Us vs. Them: The Failure of Globalism" is a New York Times bestseller. In 1998, Ian established Eurasia Group with just $25,000. As the firm's president and most active public voice, Ian advises leading executives, money managers, diplomats, and heads of state. In this episode, I interview Matthew Nordan, the Managing Director at Prime Impact Fund and the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of MNL Partners. Matthew also sits on numerous boards including Greentown Labs, Sense, and Quidnet Energy. As you may know from listening to Sarah Kearney’s episode, Prime Impact Fund is an early-stage venture capital fund focused on breakthrough climate innovation. Before Prime, Matthew was a venture capital investor at Venrock, one of the world’s oldest and most successful VC firms, where he and colleagues drove the firm’s investment in Nest Labs (acquired by Google for $3.2 billion). Prior to Venrock, Matthew was President of Lux Research (acquired by private equity firm Bregal Sagemount), an advisory services firm for science-driven innovation that he co-founded in 2004. Under Matthew’s leadership, the Lux Research analyst team became a globally recognized authority on the business impact of emerging technologies. Earlier, Matthew held a variety of senior management roles at emerging technology advisor Forrester Research (NASDAQ:FORR) in the U.S. and Europe. In addition to Prime, Matthew is co-founder and Managing Partner at MNL Partners, which develops energy and environmental projects in China. Matthew also co-founded and serves on the board of Prime Coalition, Prime Impact Fund’s non-profit parent organization. Matthew has testified before the U.S. Congress four times on emerging technology issues, was a founding member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Emerging Technologies, and is a widely sought-after speaker and commentator. He serves on the boards of MicroByre, Lilac Solutions, Sense Labs, Quidnet Energy, and Greentown Labs (the world’s largest incubator for energy and environmental companies). Matthew graduated from Yale, where he conducted cognitive neuroscience research on emotion and memory. In this episode we discuss: The a-ha moment Matthew experienced at a conference that sparked his climate journey. The differences between traditional VC and the investments Matthew makes through Prime Impact Fund specifically as it relates to moon shot ideas and climate focused companies. How Matthew and Prime balance the return of capital vs impact along with the differences between catalytic capital and market based capital. Matthews view on the role and importance of policy in the climate fight. I hope you enjoy the show! A lawyer, economist and scholar, Gillian K. Hadfield has devoted much of her career to studying how legal systems can be improved to ensure they meet the needs of the people they are meant to serve. In her book, Rules for a Flat World: Why Humans Invented Law and How to Reinvent It for a Complex Global Economy, she argues that the complexity of today’s global, digital economy has pushed law to its limits, making it too expensive, too complicated, and too far out of touch with our needs. In this episode of LawNext, host Bob Ambrogi speaks with Hadfield about her book and her proposals for reinventing the legal system. They also discuss her ideas for addressing the access-to-justice gap, her recent research on ensuring the safety of artificial intelligence, her belief that private investment is essential to sparking innovation in law, and her work with the Utah Supreme Court to launch a regulatory sandbox to test many of her theories. With both a J.D. from Stanford Law School and Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University, Hadfield is currently based at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and Rotman School of Management, where she teaches courses in legal innovation and design, responsible development and governance of AI, the origins and evolution of the law, and contract law and strategy. She is a faculty affiliate at the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Toronto and the Center for Human-Compatible AI at the University of California, Berkeley. She has served as a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on the Future of Technology, Values and Policy and Global Agenda Council on Justice and co-curates the Forum’s Transformation Map for Justice and Legal Infrastructure. She was appointed in 2017 to the American Bar Association’s Commission on the Future of Legal Education and is a member of the World Justice Project’s Research Consortium. Mutual mistrust, saber-rattling, and heated rhetoric define the U.S. relationship with Russia. If it looks like a new Cold War and smells like a new Cold War, is it a new Cold War? If it's not, what is it? From the 1990s to the present, how did we get here? Why did the West's hopes for Russia in the aftermath of the Cold War dissolve? How does Russia view its current strategic position? What are the limits of its growing influence in the Middle East and other regions? How long will Putin remain in power? What should the United States do about Russia? Drones in the United States Speaker: John Villasenor Last year, President Obama signed an aviation bill into law that will open American skies to “drones”—or more formally, unmanned aircraft systems—over the next several years. Civilian drones have many potentially beneficial applications including search and rescue, surveying, scientific research, and wildfire detection and monitoring. However, they also raise a host of complex policy issues, in particular in relation to privacy from overhead observations. This presentation begins with a brief overview of drone technology trends and the current regulatory environment. It then considers the following fundamental question: When you capture images from overhead, what are the relevant privacy frameworks? The answer depends, among other things, on whether it is the government or a private party that is doing the capturing, and on the nature of what is being observed. This talk will use a series of examples—only some of which involve drones—to describe the current privacy landscape and to illustrate the complex scenarios that legislators, regulators, and the courts will have to grapple with in the coming years. The presentation is intended to be highly interactive, and to stimulate discussion not only about drones but also about the broader policy issues raised by continued cost declines in the technologies for gathering, storing, and indexing information. John Villasenor is a professor of electrical engineering and public policy at UCLA and a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a National Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford, and a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Cybersecurity. His work addresses the intersection of digital technology with public policy and the law.

Jean-Paul Rodrigue received a Ph.D. in Transport Geography from the Université de Montréal (1994) and has been a professor at Hofstra University since 1999. Dr. Rodrigue's research interests mainly cover the fields of transportation and economics as they relate to logistics and global freight distribution. Specific topics over which he has published extensively cover maritime transport systems and logistics, global supply chains and production networks, gateways and transport corridors. He has authored five books, 25 book chapters, more than 40 peer reviewed papers, numerous reports, and delivered more than 135 conferences and seminar presentations, mostly at the international level. Dr. Rodrigue developed a widely used online reference source about transportation which became a textbook, The Geography of Transport Systems, with its third edition published in June 2013. He is also on the international editorial board of the Journal of Transport Geography and the Cahiers Scientifiques du Transport, acts as the Van Horne Researcher in Transportation and Logistics (University of Calgary). He is a member of the PortEconomics.eu initiative regrouping the world’s leading maritime transport academics and performs advisory and consulting assignments for international organizations and corporations. Dr. Rodrigue is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Advanced Manufacturing (2011-2013). In 2013, the US Secretary of Transportation appointed Dr. Rodrigue to sit on the Advisory Board of the US Merchant Marine Academy. The container, like any technical innovation, has a functional (within transport chains) and geographical diffusion potential where a phase of maturity is eventually reached. Evidence from the global container port system suggests five main successive waves of containerization with a shift of the momentum from advanced economies to developing economies, but also within specific regions. These waves are illustrative of major macroeconomic, technological and sometimes political shifts within the global economy. Containerization has therefore a cyclic behavior and that inflection points are eventually reached, marking the end of the diffusion of containerization in a specific port or port range. Future expectations about the growth of containerization thus need to be assessed within an economic cycle perspective instead of the rather linear perspectives.

Asia’s water systems are struggling in the face of climate change and the increasing water demands of their growing economies. In such a scenario, a significant water availability gap seems imminent. In this audio interview, part of a Stanford Center for Social Innovation series on water around the world, the Asian Development Bank’s Arjun Thapan talks with Stanford MBA student Ashish Jhina about the need for countries to look at water as an economic good, in addition to being a public good. He explains how public private partnerships could help bring about increased operational efficiency and higher quality service, as well as more comprehensive coverage of the urban poor by water and sanitation systems. He points to numerous success stories in India, China and the Philippines as evidence of the viability of the PPP model and its success in more adequately meeting the demands of its customers.
