Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

Fat Margaret is a tower that is home to Estonian Maritime Museum. The tower was built in the early 16th century (from 1511 to 1530) during the reconstruction of the medieval city gate system. The etymology of the tower's name derives from the fact that it was the largest part of the city's fortifications with walls measuring 25 meters in diameter, 20 meters in height and up to 5 meters thick. Apart from being a fortification against would-be invaders to the port of the town, it was also built to impress outside visitors arriving by sea. In this recording we walk around the museum space, which has carefully considered acoustics with the inclusion of an ambient soundscape blending field recordings by Patrick McGinley with music.  Recorded by Cities and Memory.

On July 15th, DEA data covering 2006 to 2012 American opioid sales, was released to the public. The ARCOS data revealed the distribution path of every oxycodone and hydrocodone pill sold in America. A trail of opioids from manufacturers to distributors, to pharmacies, to patients. Undeniable evidence for their responsibility for the opioid crisis. Big Pharma didn’t hand this “smoking gun” for the opioid epidemic over easily. It wasn’t until the Charleston Gazette-Mail, and Washington Post prevailed in a fierce legal battle that ARCOS data was released. However, this was just one fight in a struggle that began long before knowledge of this crucial evidence existed. In part one of this two-part series covering the history of the ARCOS data, you’ll learn how an underdog journalist’s relentless pursuit of the truth succeeded, despite insurmountable odds. Our story begins with Patrick McGinley, and Suzanne Weise, lawyers and Professors of Law at West Virginia College of Law. Hired to help investigative journalist Eric Eyre gain access to DEA and Big Pharma court records, they’ve joined us to share their role in the fight against the opioid epidemic. Listen to today’s podcast for part one of our journey into the history of the ARCOS data. You'll learn how it was finally released, and why the DEA, Justice Department, and Big Pharma tried to hide this information from the public. Remember to tune in next week for part two, where we interview Washington Post Investigative Journalist Scott Higham. He shares his account of the battle over the ARCOS data and what we have learned from their analysis of a 380 million record database.

This lecture is part of a series entitled "Beyond the Book of Kells: The stories of eight other medieval manuscripts from the library of Trinity College Dublin." In this talk Dr Ann Buckley of Trinity College's Department of History will discuss MS 78: A fifteenth-century Irish Antiphoner. Almost half a metre tall, MS 78 is a fine example of a late medieval choir book, one of the few to survive from Ireland. Beside music for services for saints Patrick, Canice, and Bridget, it records the commemorations of numerous other all-but-forgotten Irish saints, including Magnan of Kilmainham. Though produced for use in Kilkenny Cathedral, it was in the hands of local Clondalkin families in the sixteenth century. The lecture will be illustrated by a brief selection of chants from the manuscript, performed by Anúna members Michael McGlynn, Dónal Kearney, Patrick McGinley and Zach Trouton. A longtime resident of London, Patrick works with field recordings and found sounds, framing sounds from our environment which normally pass through our ears unnoticed and unremarked, but which out of context become unrecognizable, alien and extraordinary: crackling charcoal, a squeaking escalator, a buzzing insect, or one’s own breath. Patrick was in town to play at the Intransitive Recordings show as part of Boston’s First Night 2007. Rare Frequency Podcast (Special Ed. 11): Murmer Live 12/21/06
