Joined on this episode by the one and only Steve Prziborowski, retired Deputy Chief with the Santa Clara County Fire Department who continues to shape the fire service as an instructor with Chabot College and the National Fire Academy. A respected mentor to many, Steve spends much of his time coaching and developing firefighters and officers at all ranks.Steve has spoken across the country, authored multiple career development books, and has become a recognized voice in the fire service on leadership, succession planning, and preparing the next generation of fire service professionals. On this episode, we will get into what it truly means to be here for "them", the people we serve and the people we lead. We will discuss building and maintaining relationships, mentoring, passing the baton to those coming behind us, and why every firefighter is both a leader and a follower regardless of rank.We will also dive into leadership versus management, strategic versus tactical thinking, and why understanding the expectations of the ranks above you matters, even if promotion is not part of your plan. Which will lead us right into promotion... why not everyone needs to promote, and why those who choose that path should do it for the right reasons. The live audience helps drive the discussion and we dive down all the rabbit holes their questions open up!Episode 360 made possible by our incredible sponsors: FireStationFurniture.com - Snap-Tite Hose - and Flame Decon
While his nine-year-old son was fighting stage three cancer, Nick Stevens was driving around buying up scrap tungsten carbide just to keep food on the table. It worked well enough that one day, sitting in the hospital room, his son said to him: “Dad, why don’t you just start your own business and be your own boss?” Today Nick and his cousin Joey run JC Metals, going around the country paying cash on the spot for the carbide piling up in shops. And they refuse to sell a pound of it overseas even when buyers offer them more money to do it. Listen on your favorite podcast app using pod.link. . Main Points While You Wait, the Price Moves Carbide tooling has gotten expensive. Between the tariffs and China restricting exports, prices have been swinging all over the place. Every machine shop has scrap carbide sitting around, worn inserts and chipped end mills that are useless for precision work but still worth real money as raw material. A lot of shops don’t realize how much. Nick says he walks into places with piles of carbide they’re practically throwing away, not knowing it’s worth $40,000 or $50,000. JC Metals buys it and sells it to a private US processor, one that recently received what Nick describes as an $11 million government grant to buy up as much domestic carbide as possible and keep it in American manufacturing. The major toolmakers all have their own buyback programs too. Kennametal, Sandvik, Seco. They work, but the model is the same: ship your material out and wait on a check for 15 to 30 days. With prices moving the way they are, the number you agreed to when you shipped is not the same number when the check clears. JC Metals shows up with their own scales, weighs everything in front of you, and pays you that day. Cash, wire, Zelle, ACH, whatever you want. The Geopolitics of Scrap China controls about 85 percent of the world’s tungsten carbide supply and has been cutting off exports. Foreign buyers have been approaching American shops directly, offering 30 to 40 percent more per pound to ship the material back overseas. Nick says he outbid one of those buyers last month, knowing he would lose money doing it, because he didn’t want the material leaving the country. Tungsten carbide is a core component of armor-piercing ammunition, from rifle rounds to tank rounds. It’s also used in nuclear weapons casing. Until this interview I knew tungsten carbide was a big deal for manufacturers. I had no idea about the national security ramifications. Changing the Scrapper Stigma My great grandfather was in the scrap metal business. One reason my grandfather went into used machinery instead was that he found the scrap business unsavory, manipulating scales, shady deals. When we had a warehouse it wasn’t uncommon for scrappers to pull up in a truck and steal from Graff-Pinkert. Nick and Joey bring their own scales so there’s no question about the weight. The company name, JC Metals, stands for Jesus Christ Metals, a nod to the faith that carried them through Jack’s illness. Jack Stevens, Nick’s son, is ten months cancer free. Question: What do you do with your scrap carbide?
Ryan Wiggins of Wiggins America is in studio and he's bringing receipts. Democrats have quietly lost more than 275,000 registered voters in the 28 key swing districts Republicans have been tracking since 2020 — and the total Republican advantage in those same districts has swung by a staggering 737,000 voters. The left's answer? Scrap the Electoral College and call it racist. Wiggins dismantles that argument cold — the real reason Democrats want to torch the Electoral College is simple: blue states are shrinking, red states are growing, and the math is turning against them fast. Then Marc and Ryan expose one of the most underreported stories in American politics — the 2020 census was miscounted in a way that handed Democrats four to six House seats they never legitimately won, and nobody was in a position to fight back until now. Plus three more non-citizens just confessed to knowingly voting in federal elections — and Marc suspects that's just the tip of the iceberg. This is the Marc Cox Morning Show firing on all cylinders straight to the finish line. One topic I was especially looking forward to discussing was experience. Brandon has strong opinions on the difference between time served and experience earned. Episode #551: Fred Stockwell arrived in Mae Sot by accident more than twenty years ago while traveling through Thailand to photograph temples, a wrong bus dropping him off in what was, at the time, a bustling border town filled with NGOs and young volunteers. Someone told him to visit the garbage dump, and a man drove him there by a route that felt deliberately hard to retrace. “It was like it was a secret where it was,” he recalls. At the dump, Burmese migrant families survived by salvaging and selling recyclables, building shelters from whatever they could pull from waste. “They were living on top of the garbage!” he says. “Everything they built was what they found in the garbage.” Before Mae Sot, his life had already been shaped by self-taught risk and logistics—having introduced paragliding in the U.S. through early testing and instruction, and later becoming the first person to fly in and photograph the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, doing so from the air, when ground access had largely collapsed. And now back in the United States after that first Mae Sot visit, the contrast stayed with him: a comfortable life at home, and a border world where small failures—transport, housing, medical access—could turn fatal. His mind now made up,he returned to Mae Sot, and the first step he points to is concrete: “You've got to start somewhere. I started with one kid,” he says, describing a girl “as close to death as you're ever going to get” and taking her to the hospital, then building outward through routines that held children in school, kept housing standing, and kept people connected to services they otherwise could not reach. The critique that follows stays procedural. People arrived wanting to help and then stalled, not from cruelty but because they lacked a method for what came next, and the same problem appeared in organizations that could arrive with structure and still fail to change the conditions at the dump, or elsewhere in the town. “I saw a lot of people here, no disrespect to them, that came in to help but didn't have a clue what to do.” He ties effectiveness to the pairing of resources and competence, and reduces the mismatch to a single blunt line. “There's a very large gap between the people that want to help and the people that need help. That gap is huge.”

https://teachhoops.com/ The biggest mistake we make in high school basketball is letting the team hold a popularity contest in November to elect "captains." More often than not, you end up with the leading scorer or the friendliest senior wearing the title, regardless of whether they have the stomach to enforce your program's standards when you aren't in the room. True Team Leaders aren't elected; they are forged through shared adversity in the "muck and grind" of the off-season. They aren't just the players who speak the loudest; they are the Level 4 Competitors whose daily habits compel the rest of the roster to elevate their game. An effective leader must operate across three distinct spheres of influence. If they only master one, their leadership is incomplete: Lead Self (The Foundation): Before a player can echo your defensive calls, they must own their own execution. They are the first in the sprint, their body language is flawless, and they demonstrate elite Next Play Speed after their own mistakes. Lead Peers (The Bridge): They have the relational capital to pull a struggling teammate aside and deliver a hard truth without causing a fracture in the locker room. They are active Energy Givers. Lead the Culture (The Shield): They protect the program's vision. When a Level 1 "Energy Taker" starts complaining about minutes on the bus ride home, the team leader cuts the counter-narrative down before it can root. Instead of naming two traditional captains and alienating the rest of your upperclassmen, consider implementing a Leadership Council. The Blueprint: Select a representative from each class (Senior, Junior, Sophomore) to meet with the coaching staff weekly. The Benefit: This architecture ensures that the "Standard" is being communicated at every layer of your program. It also provides a clear pathway for younger players to develop their vocal muscles early in their high school careers. It is unfair to demand that your players hold each other accountable if you haven't given them the tools or the vocabulary to do so. In the "Truth Room" (your film study and debrief sessions), train your leaders to use objective data rather than emotional criticism. The Strategy: Teach them to challenge their teammates using the metrics that impact winning, like defensive rotations, deflections, or a drop in the team's live-scrimmage effective field goal percentage ($eFG%$). The Formula: When a leader says, "We need you to pass up that early 3 because our team's $eFG%$ drops by $15%$ when we don't get a paint touch," it shifts the conversation from a personal attack to a tactical standard. Coach's Note: "A quiet locker room after a bad practice is a coach-led team. A loud, corrective locker room where the players are fixing the execution before you even walk through the door—that is a player-led program destined to cut down nets." In this short episode of Fast Forward, Alex Kershaw, senior analyst for steel, raw materials and ferrous scrap at Fastmarkets, unpacks the recent volatility in global scrap steel markets and what is driving price movements across key regions. From the US and Europe to Turkey and China, the discussion explores how rising energy and freight costs, partly driven by the Middle East conflict, are lifting prices despite weak steel demand. National's Justice spokesperson Paul Goldsmith has announced the party will prohibit the practice at sentencing. He says the assessments only serve the interests of offenders and rarely the victims. Joined on this episode by the one and only Kiel Samsing; firefighter, paramedic, neuroscience coach, instructor, and author of the game-changing book Mind of Fire: The Science and Art of Decision Making.Kiel founded Mind of Fire back in 2018 after seeing a massive gap in the fire service: we crush tactics and hands-on skills, but we've been starving the cognitive side - the mental sets and reps that separate good decisions from the ones that get people hurt. In this episode we're diving straight into the science and art of fireground decision-making, how the brain actually works under extreme stress, and the practical tools every firefighter and officer needs to build better mental models, cut through chaos, and make the right call when it matters most. We'll talk about the OODA loop fire-service style, empowered leadership, why cognitive training is just as critical as nozzle technique, and the real-world stories and lessons that went into Mind of Fire. Kiel's also got the companion workbook dropping soon and it is loaded with mental drills and exercises you can actually use on shift. Expect straight talk on building decision-making muscle, staying sharp through the years, and why the “mind of fire” might be the most important tool on the truck.Of course the audience is going to light this one up with questions, and we'll go wherever the conversation takes us... because that's what makes the Scrap the absolute best!!!! And if you haven't read Mind of Fire yet, fix that. It's already becoming required reading in engine houses and training divisions across the country. www.mindoffire.com | @kielsamsing | @mindoffireShare this everywhere. Set your reminders. Katie Gates is a fibre artist who made a creative playground for herself by establishing Oddkin Studio where she creates delightfully odd, handmade scrap monsters from repurposed textiles.Inspired by the constraints of scavenged materials, resourcefulness and a love for the slightly strange, Katie creates each piece thoughtfully by hand, intuitively allowing the materials to guide the direction of each one-of-a-kind creation.Oddkin Studio began with a leap of faith and a basket of fabric scraps. Katie stepped away from a decade-long teaching career with no clear plan in mind for where her journey was headed next. She spent her days resting, wandering and following small sparks of curiosity wherever they led. And somewhere along the way, those sparks turned into scrap monsters. On this episode, host Angela de Burger chats with Katie about how going viral recently on social media led to her finding her creative community, how using recycled materials creates constraints that fire up her imagination, and how she's purposely developing a process for her handmade art business that fuels her work and life. We will also dug into patience vs. passion, earning credibility, recruiting informal leaders, playing the long game, and why surveying the land (not just the people) is critical at all levels. And of course… So many amazing questions from the Audience!Special thanks to IdentiFire and SnapTite Hose for episode 353 of The Weekly Scrap Podcast.

The way New Zealanders are able to hold media to account and challenge content is about to change after the Government announced it wants to scrap the Broadcasting Standards Authority. Media and Communications Minister Paul Goldsmith said that the media landscape has changed since the BSA was set up in 1989 and regulation hasn't kept up. In a statement, the BSA said it has said for more than 15 years the current Broadcasting Act is "no longer fit for purpose." But a former BSA member said the authority plays an important role and abolishing it leaves some communities more exposed to media harm. Pulotu Tupe Solomon-Tanoa'i spoke to Melissa Chan-Green.

Joined on this episode by the one and only Brian Brush (CRUSH) and you better be ready, because we're diving deep into rescue data. He's coming on to release and discuss the initial findings from the 2026 rescue count. We compare it to the 2021 project and what trends we can quantify, and what trends we are seeing over the last five years. With over 500 structure fire incidents across the U.S. in the first 90 days of 2026 where a civilian rescue was made. That's 5.6 structure fire incidents per day involving a rescue, roughly one every 4 hours and 16 minutes. Nearly 1,000 civilians rescued from those incidents. An average of 1.9 victims per fire where a rescue occurs. Roughly 11 Americans rescued by firefighters every single day. The data is already telling a powerful story! We also talk Fire Engineering and FDIC with the big show right around the corner. And of course, talking to Crush always needs to include what is going on at his department and the culture of live fire and training that they have built. The audience as always brought the great questions... which is what makes the Scrap the absolute best!!!Share this everywhere!!!
