Our guest this week, Rob Hopkins, is a towering figure in the world of regenerative change. Co-founder of Transition Network and of Transition Town Totnes, he is host of the podcast 'From What if to What Next', stars in the groundbreaking French film 'Demain', speaks at TED Global and TEDx events and most recently, has created a collaborative music project with artist Mr Kit, ‘Field Recordings from the Future‘ which will be released on 17th of May 2025, alongside his new book,‘How to Fall in Love with the Future'. With the subtitle, 'A Time Traveller's Guide to Changing the World', this book does what it says on the tin - it offers a radical, moving, deeply inspiring dive into the people and movements throughout history who have used visions of the future to inspire positive change on a large and dramatic scale. From the life and writings of musician Sun Ra and the history of Black utopian movements to the latest neuroscience on what goes on in our minds—and hearts—when we travel through time, Rob brings essential new thinking to anyone overwhelmed with dread and anxiety for the future. He asks us to consider: what would the world look like if we all got to work imagining—and then building—a world we were deeply in love with?So this is our invitation to you: Listen to Rob now, then read his book, then explore what a genuinely flourishing future would feel like for you. And then together, let's make this happen. In this episode Neil and Jason speak with Dr Jesse Budel, a composer-performer, sound artist, academic and arts entrepreneur based in South Australia. As a composer, his works are for diverse media and spaces, ranging from concert works and installations to community and interdisciplinary collaborations. Jesse's PhD research at the Elder Conservatorium of Music focussed on adapting soundscape ecology to creative process, resulting in a body of works responding to South Australian ecosystems and soundscapes. Andrew Jones didn't set out to make wine. Instead, he spent decades planting vines for other people — some of the biggest names in California (e.g., Beckstoffer). But along the way, Andrew started stockpiling stories — and grapes — and what began as a side project turned into Field Recordings, a brand known for bending rules and bottling attitude. The brand has since been featured in Wine Enthusiast, on Vinepair, and in the New York Times, growing into one of the most talked-about labels in the country. In this episode, Andrew talks with Eli Brown and Jonathan Ellsworth about nursery hustle, breaking the rules, and why wine should be fun, not fussy. We also talk about boxed wine, baseball card philosophy, and Andrew fires off some of the sharpest wine one-liners we've ever heard.RELATED LINKS:Blister Craft CollectiveBecome a BLISTER+ MemberField Recordings WineryField Recordings InstagramTOPICS & TIMES:Intro to California Winemaking (2:26)From Football to Farming (4:44)Transition from Nursery to Winemaking (6:22)The Birth of Field Recordings (12:50)Terroir & Storytelling (14:12)Nurseries & Vines (22:21)Economics of Wine Pricing (26:07)Field Recordings: Quality & Accessibility (27:24)Finding Unique Properties for Winemaking (29:44)Making Wine Enjoyable for Everyone (42:12)Understanding Wine Pricing (47:31)Navigating the Wine Aisle: Tips for Beginners (48:11)Quality Control, Ingredients, & Additives (51:45)The Natural Wine Movement (58:27)Future Trends? Send us a textIt feels good to be back. This is my first field recording in nearly two years, captured just after sunset along the banks of Otter Creek in Sleeping Bear Dunes. I used my Zoom F3 recorder paired with the Audio-Technica BP4025 microphone, placed as a drop rig for an overnight session. As the light faded, I returned to one of my favorite spots—a quiet place where beavers often swim and birds gather in abundance. I watched two Trumpeter Swans descend and glide in beside a gathering of geese and ducks settling in for the night. Turkeys called from nearby trees, and the evening wrapped itself in the distant sound of Barred Owls echoing through the forest. It was peaceful, wild, and exactly what I'd been missing.Recording Details:Date and Time: 4/17/2025 | 5:30 AMLocation: Sleeping Bear Dunes National LakeshoreLandscape/Feature: Otter CreekConditions: 61F (16C), Overnight, Light Breeze that changed to GustingRecording Device: Zoom F3 Field RecorderMicrophone(s): Audio Technica BP4025Support the showThanks for listening! ❤️ Your support means the world to me. In this episode of The Music Production Podcast, I sit down with musician and songwriter Jean-Paul Vest, the driving force behind Last Charge of the Light Horse. We talk about the evolution of songwriting, the impact of place and sound on music, and the delicate balance between control and spontaneity in the creative process. Jean-Paul shares his approach to writing, how his songs take shape over time, and the unexpected ways music resonates with listeners. We also dive into the role of nostalgia, the value of quiet spaces, and why playing music with friends is one of the greatest joys of being a musician. Listen on Apple, Spotify, YouTube Main Topics Discussed: Songwriting and Identity – How artists evolve over time and whether they should brand themselves or stay fluid in their musical identity. Letting Creativity Flow – The challenge of balancing technical skill with raw inspiration and why stepping back can lead to better songs. Sound and Place – How environments, from noisy cities to quiet deserts, influence musical perception and creativity. The Role of Collaboration – Learning to trust bandmates and fellow musicians rather than dictating every detail. Reinvention in Music – How artists like Beck and XTC reinvent themselves and what we can learn from their approach. Music as a Personal Archive – Songs as layered stories, much like a “palimpsest,” revealing new meaning over time. Field Recording and Natural Soundscapes – Using organic sounds in music and the impact of noise pollution on creativity. Key Takeaways: Step Back and Let the Song Lead – Trying too hard to control the songwriting process can stifle creativity. Let ideas develop naturally. Your Environment Shapes Your Sound – Whether it's a reverb-heavy church or the silent stillness of a desert, soundscapes influence the way music is made. Not Every Song is an Autobiography – Just because a song is personal doesn't mean it's literally about the songwriter. Sometimes, music is a character study. The Right Audience Makes a Difference – Playing in an intimate setting vs. a bar can completely change how a song is received. Music is a Long Game – Success isn't just about radio play; it's about the relationships and experiences built through music-making. Meet Doug Quin, sound designer and naturalist who makes field recordings all over the world. Hear what Doug heard when he got up close to emperor penguins, lions and vultures. (R)Sound designer and naturalist Doug Quin has been highly attuned to sound since he was a young child growing up in Algeria under the threat of bombing. Through his family's travels and his years at a Scottish boarding school, Doug fell in love with the outdoors, and especially with wintery landscapes. He later transformed his deep curiosity about nature and skills in music and art into a prolific career. Since the early 1980s Doug has been making field recordings in every corner of the Earth, and putting them to use in work spanning all media. His extensive credits include designing sound for films such as Jurassic Park 3 and countless nature documentaries, collaborating with the Kronos Quartet, composing soundscapes for museums and art galleries, releasing albums, and contributing planetary ambiences to the score of the game Spore. This episode of Conversations touches on the natural world, Jurassic Park 3, animals, nature, silence, Antarctica, origin stories, Scotland, Algeria, birding, birdsong, war, bombing, resilience and family.

Send us a textWhat do sound and knitting have in common? You'd be forgiven for thinking not much, but both have been constant companions across the life and career of sound artist and knitter, Felicity Ford also know as Felix. Join sobel as she visits Felix in her St Leonard's home to talk about her journey into field recording, soundscape composition and using this skillset to document the process of wool production. Felix also shares her perspective on why celebrating domestic sounds is a feminist pursuit, her maverick approach to disruption traditional notions of sonic art and how all of us can find a little magic in the everyday. In fact, isn't that what art is all about? Felix would argue. Felix also runs her own online knitting school called Kitsonik, so it only felt right for Isobel to be taught some knitting while we were there.
