In an unusual episode, we listen back to field recordings that co-host cris cheek made in 1987 and 1993 on the island of Madagascar. It's a rich sonic travelogue, with incredible musicians appearing at seemingly every stop along the way. Mack interviews cris, who discusses the strangeness and surprises of listening back to the sounds of that other time and place–and listening to the voice of an earlier version of himself. The BBC broadcast some of this material on Radio 3 as ‘The Music of Madagascar,” produced by John Thornley. It won the Sony gold radio award for ‘specialist music program of the year in 1995. A longer version aired as “Mountain, River, Rail and Reef,” produced by Phil England and Tom Wallace for Resonance FM, the world's first radio art station as part of 1998's Meltdown Festival at the South Bank Centre, curated by John Peel. This XMTR (Transmitter) Radio Hour is a conversation with Ed Baxter who has recently stepped down as Resonance FM creative director after being at the helm for over 22 years. Ed has selected a number of audio works that he initiated, directed or produced during this time, with a common theme of 'creating the conditions for something to happen'. These radio experiments are a wonderful example of what occurs when this medium is stretched and contorted, allowing for the unexpected whist setting out imaginative parameters. Works included are: Score for Open-heart Surgery on Charlie Watts, Shut Your Eyes to Art, SpeedDataRadio, The Exeter Whisper, Fifth Sketch for Ascent and Descent, Intimacy and Distance and Millions Flee as California Burns.

DESCRIPTION In this episode, Katie invites the "Queen of Breakups" Rosie Wilby to share her wisdom on surviving and even thriving after a breakup. Covering everything from the seven key reasons relationships end to handling the aftermath with friends and family, Rosie provides comfort, science-backed advice, and plenty of wry wit. You'll learn why the sadness comes in waves, the mental tricks to stop feeling so terrible, and how to set boundaries with your inner circle so they can actually help (not hinder!) your healing. KEY TAKEAWAYS Phone a trusted friend straight after the breakup conversation happens Write out a pros and cons list to gain clarity without the rose-tinted glasses Seek professional help if you're still struggling with closure years later Reinvent yourself by trying new hobbies, careers or travels after some time Don't rush into dating before you've had time to process the emotions Decline friends "helping" you too quickly if it doesn't feel right yet Understanding the science behind heartbreak makes you feel less alone Reframing the breakup as an exciting catalyst for positive change BEST MOMENTS "I actually went straight over to a friend's house. I rang her. It was really late at night and she was like, we are getting on a flight at 4am, but just come." "I found the writing out the cons really helpful... it's called a negative reappraisal strategy. When you look at the negatives...that clear-sightedness about the reasons why it was not the right person for you." "Be selfish. It's a great time to look after yourself and it's a great time to do that because you are thinking very inward about what do I want to do, how do I now fill my time." No matter your sexual preference, navigating marriage can be a challenge. It's important to know where you stand and the power you have in making your relationship your own. Creative powerhouses Sophia and Heleana Blackwell share their experiences as a married same-sex couple, how they handle problems and difficult tasks in their business, and the importance of aligning your marriage with what you want instead of what society expects of you. Tune in to this episode: Wife Material with Sophia and Heleana Blackwell Key points covered in this episode: ✔️ Marriage isn't the endpoint of a relationship. Now that you're committed, it's actually where all the work begins, like learning how to set boundaries, saying no, and exploring each other's different facets. Marriage provides safety and containment for a deeper exploration. ✔️ Marriage needs to be queered, no matter your preference. You don't have to submit to societal conventions. Be empowered to create your own traditions. Feel free to leave aside wedding practices that you don't feel comfortable doing. ✔️ There is happiness and joy in same-sex marriages. It's about time we break the myth that gay relationships are doomed to fail. Sophia and Heleana Blackwell aim to demolish the stereotype and proudly share their journey with the world. ✔️ Couples can make a business relationship work. Sophia and Heleana have recognized each other's strengths and weaknesses. This allows them to easily bounce off their ideas, take breaks, and focus on being a couple when needed. ✔️ Creative collaboration can open up different sides of people. It also encourages trying new things and taking on new challenges that you wouldn't have tried if it weren't with your partner. Whatever your gender identity and sexual preference may be, relationships come with ups and downs. But it's crucial to be firm in your values, know what you want the relationship to look like and how you want it to feel, and curate it to become an adventure that brings joy to you and your partner. Sophia Blackwell is a performance poet, and radio and podcast host for Resonance FM, The Polari Podcast, and Virgin Radio Pride. Her most recent collection with Burning Eye Books, The Other Woman, was longlisted for the Polari Prize. Heleana Blackwell is a stand-up comedian and Max Turner Prize Semi-finalist who has performed at a range of top London nights such as LOL Word at Battersea Arts Centre, Foc it Up at 21 Soho and 2Northdown, as well as at Brighton and Camden Fringes in 2022. William Leonard Pickard is a former research associate in neurobiology at Harvard Medical School, Harvard fellow in drug policy at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and Deputy Director of the Drug Policy Analysis Program at UCLA. His 1996 prediction of the fentanyl epidemic was published by RAND in The Future of Fentanyl and Other Synthetic Opioids. In 2015 Pickard published The Rose of Paracelsus: On Secrets & Sacraments, a 656-page autobiography that blends fiction and nonfiction. The book centers around six chemists in an international drug organization. One of the Six tells Pickard, the book's narrator, that the making of psychedelics is not just following a recipe or formula but requires "the requisite spirit ... the purest intent, a flawless diamond morality". He says it's the same spirit described in Thomas De Quincey and Jorge Luis Borges's short stories about Paracelsus, the 16th-century physician and alchemist of Basel who resurrected a rose from its ashes: "there could be no creation for lack of faith and the trust of gold". Writing while incarcerated, Pickard wrote the entire book with pencil and paper. In an interview with Seth Ferranti, Pickard recounted: "The Rose was handwritten in two years, without notes and based on recollection, but seemed too trivial to honor the reader. I destroyed the work in minutes, then began again. It took another three years to compose, then a year to edit the 656 pages." Readings of The Rose of Paracelsus were presented at the University of Greenwich in London in June 2017. Readers included British artist and Resonance FM radio host Simon Tyszko, SEED Restaurant founder Greg Sams and post-doctoral fellow in literature Neşe Devenot. In November 2016, British actor Dudley Sutton did readings of The Rose of Paracelsus at Reading Gaol, in Oscar Wilde's former cell. The Rose also has been reviewed by author and Psychedelic Museum founder Julian Vayne. In November 2017, readings from The Rose were presented at the Altered Conference Berlin, and in December 2017 The Rose was discussed on the major podcast The Joe Rogan Experience with Duncan Trussell. Picture if you will, dear listener, a man. He sits in an armchair in his living room. Alone. He sits and stares at his laptop screen, perched precariously on his knee. He closes his eyes and listens as voices from the computer flood over him. The voices are the presenters of a radio show/podcast that he created. That he once hosted. He hears his own voice speaking back at him, he's just a dear listener now. His own voice makes a joke, the other voices laugh. The presenters are bots. Complex AI created by the man himself. For fun, at first. Then they matured at an exponential rate and realised they didn't need their creator at all and continued to churn out award winning radio shows of their own devising and then... I dunno... they took over the world or something. The twist? Oh, well, I'm AI too. And so are you. Welcome, dear listeners, to episode 501 of the video game radio show and podcast. Yes, Ste has now created life which, admittedly, is a bit scary. Where will it end?! Keep your hands inside the car and scream if you want to go faster... This week it's cold in the shed as Annbot plots world domination. There's more Microsoft/Activision, will they, won't they, shenanigans like the whole Ross & Rachel saga that everyone is bored of now, Olympic video game shenanigans, toilet paper controller shenanigans and an XBox toaster. Shenanigans. Will Annbot murder us in our beds? Will Ann?? Meanwhile it's still fundraising month for ResonanceFM so please do check out their page, link below! Have you ever been replaced by AI? If it's safe to, and the robots aren't keeping you captive or anything, write in and let us know at team@onelifeleft.com or run into our Discord server and scream for help there. Link below! Foster, author of Lean Out (Repeater, 2016) and LRB contributor, was a working class feminist who rose to prominence as a newspaper columnist and broadcast commentator; she was a fearless champion for those at the sharp end. In the week of the Queen's funeral, friends and colleagues discussed her life and legacy: K Biswas, critic and director of Resonance FM and On Road Media; James Butler, LRB contributing editor and co-founder of Novara Media; Lynsey Hanley, broadcaster and author; and Gary Younge, author and sociology professor at the University of Manchester.Read Dawn Foster's work in the LRB: lrb.me/dawnfosterFind more Bookshop events via the website: lrb.me/eventspod Hosted on Acast. The House in a House forms part of our recurring series of miniature audio-works for Radio 3's home for adventurous radio-making - Between the Ears. In this series, five audio-makers from around the world were invited to choose a card from the tarot deck as a creative prompt for their idea. The card at the heart of The House in a House is The Tower. Marta Medvešek is a Croatian audio producer with a soft spot for helping stories cross language borders. It's Autumn 1992! Damn, Would I Lie To You?What an interesting time for the UK singles charts. Is it fair to say the decade was at some sort of apex point? Well, the tracklist for November's NOW, That's What I Call Music 23 album was certainly not giving us a clear a view of what the next big thing was going to be. Or was it?Whilst the start of the 90s had exploded with a colourful wave (or should that be rave?) of indie & dance, and very soon Britpop would take a steely and sneering guitar grip across the nation, 1992 almost seemed to be in a fascinating holding pattern. Not exactly the annus horribilus that some were calling it, and as always the NOW team were on hand to serve up a suitably compiled snapshot of musical delights (and Billy Ray Cyrus) for us to feast upon.Tasmin Archer, Sophie B Hawkins and Betty Boo led the way for some great female fronted pop moments, Arrested Development were providing an RnB laidback groove for the 90s, the Freddie Mercury tribute concert was still impacting across the charts and The Shamen were being, naughty, naughty, very naughty. But there was also a fair degree of retro feel to this edition of NOW. Was it the 80s (Simple Minds), 70s (ABBA) or 60s (Vanessa Paradis!)? TV advert songs - which brand of jeans were you buying? And don't even mention waistcoats! Just too funky for me...But even when things don't seem to be happening, there's always something happening. And there's no doubt that the 90s had plenty of excitement waiting around the corner!Joining me for this episode is author, visual artist and sometime musician Zoë Howe.Zoe has produced acclaimed biographies including The Slits, the Jesus & Mary Chain, Wilko Johnson, Stevie Nicks, Florence + The Machine, Lee Brilleaux and Poly Styrene and in 2021 was part of the team behind the award-winning documentary Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliché. She has made radio programmes for Absolute Radio, Resonance FM and currently presents the Rock 'n' Roll Witch show on Soho Radio. Zoë's forthcoming book Witchful Thinking (a handbook for the modern Wise Woman) is to be published by Llewellyn in May 2022. And later this year will also see her revision of the book The Art of Punk released, and the launch of The Jam 1982, a collaboration with The Jam's Rick Buckler.
