Steven Robinson joins us to unravel the captivating saga of how dedicated activists thwarted the massive 1990s Television City development on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Imagine the world's tallest building casting a shadow over a vibrant community, threatening its cultural and environmental essence. Our conversation with Robinson shines a spotlight on the resilience and ingenuity of local groups like West Pride and the Civics, who banded together to preserve their neighborhood's diverse character against a looming monolith of luxury towers and retail chaos.Show Notes:To help support the show, pick up a copy of the book through our Amazon Affiliates page at https://amzn.to/4gHgBTF or even better, get a copy through your local bookstore!Further Reading: Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane JacobsThe Living City by Roberta GratzThe Well Tempered City by Jonathan F.P. Matt finally goes into his first passion and talks about the 1st Minnesota Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War and their actions at the battle of Gettysburg. He neglects to talk about his childhood where he had a civil war uniform he made along with a sword made out of a hockey stick but is including that in the show description. If you wanna read more on this, check out The Last Full Measure by Richard Moe and Pale Horse at Plum Orchard by Leehan. Anyways. I did a lot of editing on it, it came out okay.

Aug. 30, 2014. Richard Moe appears at the 2014 Library of Congress National Book Festival in Washington, D.C. Speaker Biography: Before turning to the writing of history books, Richard Moe led a distinguished career in government, law and historic preservation. Moe served as chief of staff to Vice President Walter Mondale and he was a member of President Carter's senior staff. While a partner at a law firm, he also served as president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Moe's extensive career in public service equipped him with a key understanding of presidential life and politics. Moe's detailed account of FDR's multifaceted demeanor emphasizes that his decision to seek reelection was far from inevitable.
