Woodbine is a DIY volunteer-run community resource hub located in Ridgewood Queens, NY. It's all encompassing of solidarity, intended to cultivate the practices, skills, and tools needed to build autonomy. They host workshops, lectures, discussions and serve as a meeting and organizing space. They offer a multitude of ways to get community members' needs met like through their seed library, trades and services directory, english classes and much more! In this episode I speak with one of the co-founders Matt Peterson and volunteer Amoga Sahu about the creation and sustainability of this mutual aid hub. We speak about how they gathered the funds to get started and how they managed to not only sustain themselves but move into a bigger space during the pandemic. They've been around since 2014 and most DIY spaces don't last in NYC so this is pretty major. You'll learn about some of the free events, tools, and resources available to the community like their recently installed Mesh internet network. Matt shares an interesting perspective on decision making structures and accountability within a volunteer-run space which tends to be the one of most difficult aspects of running a collectively run space. At the end there's some tips offered on how others can build an autonomous community centered space in the city.
Part 1 of a crossover episode with Woodbine's podcast about Adam Curtis' new BBC series, Can't Get You Out of My Head. So, who are these irregular regulars of Cypress Avenue? Set over the course of one Sunday, The Slow Midnight on Cypress Avenue is a collection of interconnected vignettes that takes the reader through the streets and across sidewalks of Cypress Avenue—an unkempt afterthought, just a place that sits at the neighborhood border edge of Ridgewood Queens, NY. The three-part book—broken into Morning, Afternoon, and Night—introduces you to the irregular regulars of the human race. There is the soft and strange relationship between the eccentric Samuel Jean and a young girl of Puerto Rican descent named Desponda “Dezzy” Rivera. There's “Old” Goldie Samuels, a washed-up relic who spends her days spinning yarns and getting free drinks at the local liquor store. But the story is truly centered on Corporal Benjamin Zogby, a veteran who spends his days alone on his stoop watching the bus go by and wishing his love would return to him. It's his tragic fate that sends the avenue and the other inhabitants you'll meet—Earl the fisherman, Father John White, among others—into an unstoppable tailspin toward unexpected change and inner destruction. “I spent five seasons in Queens, NY, prowling center field of Shea Stadium. Mike Figliola captures the heartbeat of NYC better than any book I know.” —Lenny Dykstra, New York Times Bestselling Author of House of Nails The Slow Midnight on Cypress Avenue by Mike Figliola Trade Paperback On-Sale: August 4 , 2020 ISBN: 9781682619193 $16.99 US / $22.99 CAD

Click Here to Donate! Welcome to a special episode of BZ Listening. The podcast is officially on vacation, but I wanted to help spread the word about a fundraiser for The Footlight, a venue in Ridgewood Queens that is very near and dear to my heart, as are its owner Laura Regan, and her husband Tim. The Footlight opened just as I was departing New York for Cleveland, but I got to produce the very first show that graced its stage, the finale of my variety show, The BZ Douglas Carnivale. On today’s episode, Laura and I discuss the genesis of the Footlight, how it has become an artistic incubator and a space that fosters community, and finally the financial troubles she is facing due to a landlord that is not honoring his obligations, and the systemic problems that the city has with regulating building owners. I have been painting for more than forty years. My partner is also a painter. I have an adult son. I have a studio in Ridgewood Queens and spend summers working in upstate NY, north of the Catskills. For most of my life I supported myself working part time, first as a waiter and then as a magazine production editor. I’ve had some shows and some awards and residencies but mostly I just paint.
