Michael Cragg's devotion to all things Kylie once led him to Melbourne in search of the actual carousel horse she rode in a pop video. He got a tattoo a day later. Can't Get You Out Of My Head is a funny and fondly detailed personal account of the risk-taking variety of her records, the mystery of her private life and the irresistible nature of her appeal, a girl who, were there a war on, would be painted on the tail fins of aircraft. He looks back here at … … her ‘90s reinvention by association – with Nick Cave, Michael Hutchence and Bobby Gillespie … how records about joy never get enough credit … wrestling back control after life with Stock Aitken & Waterman … the root of her appeal as a gay icon ... being vilified by the press for any public pronouncement … a capacity to charm her detractors when she meets them … reciting I Should Be So Lucky at the Poetry Olympics alongside Patti Smith and Allen Ginsberg … a mixture of the ordinary and the exotic and the ‘Carry On' sexuality of her videos … only Queen Elizabeth 11 has had more waxworks at Madame Tussauds … and Michael's meeting with her – “I'm six foot eight, she's five foot one” - and the resulting photo. This summer has been anything but quiet for infectious diseases. In this episode of Contagion Podcast, hosts Drs. Vivian Vega and Jackie Sherbuk take listeners on a fast-paced tour through the outbreaks, emerging threats, and public health stories that have dominated conversations among infectious disease specialists—and increasingly, the general public. The episode begins with the nationwide Cyclospora outbreak, examining why this foodborne parasite has become one of the summer's biggest public health stories. The hosts explain how contaminated produce, long incubation periods, and complex food distribution networks make outbreak investigations particularly challenging, while providing practical advice on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.Next, they explore the remarkable Andes hantavirus outbreak linked to an expedition cruise in Patagonia. This unusual event highlights the only hantavirus known to spread from person to person and serves as a fascinating case study in how ecotourism, international travel, and delayed symptom onset can complicate outbreak investigations across multiple countries. The conversation then shifts to one of the most extraordinary success stories in public health: the battle against the New World screwworm. Listeners will discover how millions of sterile flies have been used to eradicate one of history's most destructive livestock pests—and why climate change, wildlife movement, and border challenges now threaten decades of success. The hosts also review the ongoing Legionnaires' disease outbreak in New York City, discussing how modern environmental surveillance, rapid public health response, and laboratory testing work together to control urban outbreaks before they expand further.Attention then turns to the rapidly expanding Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the rare Bundibugyo strain presents new challenges because currently available vaccines and therapies are not proven to work against it. The discussion highlights the importance of surveillance, contact tracing, community trust, and ongoing clinical trials in outbreak response. Finally, the episode examines how public health agencies prepared for infectious disease threats during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, from measles and respiratory viruses to wastewater surveillance, social media monitoring, and behind-the-scenes coordination that helps keep millions of travelers safe.Blending humor, clinical insight, and real-world epidemiology, this episode offers an engaging look at the infectious disease stories shaping the summer of 2026. Whether you're a healthcare professional, student, or simply curious about emerging health threats, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for the science, surveillance, and public health efforts that work quietly behind the scenes to protect us all.Dr. Vega would like to thank her friend Job Meiller for his musical contributions, "Hotel California," and "Can't Get You Out of My Mind," to our segment breaks. Thank you, Job!Thanks also to Dr. Ana Velez, our artistic contributor, for her artwork utilized in our episode thumbnail, "The Mouse Who Never Meant to Harm."

She is a two-time recipient of the Chalmers Arts Fellowship and winner of the K.M. Hunter Award for Literature. Her books include I Can't Get You Out of My Mind, Deep Salt Water, Voluptuous Pleasure: The Truth about the Writing Life, and Swim. Moving across fiction, memoir, and literary nonfiction, her work often returns to the body, desire, memory, and the stories we tell about ourselves. Her latest book is Go/No-Go: A Journey Into the Research and Treatment of Mental Health Disorders, which has been called "required reading for anyone with a stake in mental health care." Marianne has described the book as beginning in 2022, during a period of creative and emotional crisis, when she encountered a research article that changed how she understood the human mind. In the prologue, she writes that we have "reached a dead end" in our current approach to mental health disorders. The book traces how we arrived there and where we might turn instead. *** Thank you for being with us to listen to the podcast and read our articles this year. Amadeus (1984, Miloš Forman) is not really about Mozart. It's a film about the rest of us — the ones who can recognise genius but will never possess it. Salieri is the true protagonist of this musical biopic. His tragedy isn't jealousy, it's clarity. Now back in cinemas in a new 4K restoration, Laura Gommans and Tom Ooms get into mediocrity, and what it means to be desperate to be a genius and know, quietly, that you won't be. Whether musical genius is even something we value anymore. And if TikTok — full of AI Slop, or a thousand strangers going viral for no particular reason — is the logical conclusion of a culture that stopped caring. For everyone currently in their Salieri era.Get tickets to Amadeus @ LAB111Get tickets to Film Lecture: My Film Is Vietnam @ LAB111Get tickets to Can't Get You Out of My Head: Films of Obsession @ LAB111Get tickets to Fight The Power: How To Catch A Butterfly @ LAB111

Is your "niceness" actually a survival tactic? Erica Bonham joins Josh to reveal why niceness is often a performance used to mask anxiety, while true kindness is a "muscle" built through honesty and direct feedback. They discuss the "soup of society" we all swim in and how old traumas can turn leaders into rigid, "power-over" bosses. Erica explains the biology of leadership—how your vagus nerve communicates with your team's "bullshit detectors"—and why performing calm isn't enough. You have to actually be regulated. In this episode, you'll learn: ✅ Niceness vs. Kindness: Why niceness is self-preservation, but kindness is a gift of honesty and growth. ✅ The Nervous System Toolkit: Moving beyond "head bubbles" into somatic practices to anchor yourself in your lower belly. ✅ The "Strongest Nervous System" Wins: How a leader's regulation (or dysregulation) is literally contagious to the entire room. ✅ Shadow Work: Why "gruff" leadership styles are often just trauma adaptations designed to prevent being a victim again. ✅ Vulnerability as Strength: Why naming the "anxiety in the room" builds more trust than pretending everything is "rainbows and sunshine." ✅ Differentiation: How real connection requires a healthy degree of separation and knowing where you end and your team begins. The model may be proprietary rather than open source, marking a significant shift from Meta’s previous strategy of freely distributing Llama’s weights and architecture to developers. We feel like this is an interesting choice for Meta, but what do we know? Meta spent 14.3 billion dollars in June 2025 to hire Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang as Chief AI Officer and acquire a stake in Scale, while raising 2026 capital expenditure guidance to 70-72 billion dollars. Wang now leads the elite TBD Lab developing Avocado, operating separately from traditional Meta teams and not using the company’s internal workplace network. The company has restructured its AI leadership following the poor reception of Llama 4 in April, with Chief Product Officer Chris Cox no longer overseeing the GenAI unit. Meta cut 600 jobs in Meta Superintelligence Labs in October, contributing to the departure of Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun to launch a startup, while implementing 70-hour workweeks across AI organizations. Cathy Dennis is a singer and a songwriter. I have been a huge fan of hers for years both through her solo music career and I've been lucky enough to write with her and get to know over the years. She is a true talent and a champion for music and creativity. She had a successful solo career in the early 90s, and then changed to songwriting in the 2000s, including writing Kylie's ‘Can't Get You Out of My Head', Britney's ‘Toxic' and Katy Perry's ‘I Kissed a Girl'.Cathy told me how she was bullied at school, from the age of 7-12, and how that may have equipped her to be strong and tenacious enough to be a woman in the music industry. She became a mum in 2004 (the same year I became a mum!) and found it a challenge to carry on with her career at that point but here she is, still writing and involved in music. Cathy credits her son Seb with being her solace when she's found her self on the 'nothing will ever be perfect' train. It was so gorgeous to talk to a friend who I admire and whose career is constantly evolving. A lovely conversation! Marianne Eloise has had the same Fall Out Boy song stuck in her head for over three years. "It's Hard to Say 'I Do,' When I Don't," an relatively obscure cut from the band's 2007 album Infinity on High has taken up permanent residence in her brain as the ultimate earworm. Everybody has had a riff or a melody stuck in their head, but not at this . Eloise, a journalist and music writer, decided to turn her malady into a story. Her pursuit of the science behind "stuck songs" led her to our unique bureau of forensic musicology. On this episode of Switched on Pop, Charlie and Nate talk about earworms: what they are, why are they so catchy, and how we might get rid of them. Then, Nate confronts his own stuck song: The Lemon Twigs's "In My Head," and in talking to the two brothers behind the group, finds a novel approach to giving an unwanted musical guest the boot.
