His song "Way It Is" was featured on MTV's "Road Rules Challenge." Sallee produces and records nearly all of his music, and even directed K.A.A.N.'s video for "Phoenix" which has amassed nearly 6 million views on Youtube. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Military reporter Emanuel Fabian joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. As the war continues on the ground in Gaza and in Lebanon, we learn how the IDF is overtly taking credit for strikes inside Syria -- and why. US president-elect Donald Trump has informed the Biden administration that he expects to see progress in the efforts to obtain a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah and his advisors claim he would like the Gaza war wrapped up by the time he takes office in January. Fabian weighs in on whether the IDF is in a position to pull back right now -- without Hamas or Hezbollah simply filling the vacuum. New Defense Minister Israel Katz spoke with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Friday, who conveyed a “sharp” message to his new Israeli counterpart during their first phone conversation, to the effect that Israel risks jeopardizing the ongoing provision of US weaponry for the Gaza war if it does not credibly show that it has improved the supply and distribution of aid to Gazan noncombatants. We hear about new IDF efforts to introduce more aid into the Strip and discuss Katz's challenges in taking on his new role. For news updates, please check out The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog. Discussed articles include: Hezbollah fires dozens of rockets at Israel as IDF pounds Lebanon, Syria targets US warplanes hit Houthis' advanced weapons storage facilities in Yemen strikes Israel rejects ‘biased' warning of famine in Gaza, says aid trucks enter war-torn towns Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts. The Doctor and Valvu must fight their way back to the castle and Dr. Lingus takes a blow to the heart, leading her to an extraction that could mean the end for this hero.

The topic of this week's episode is the long history of biases inherent to the book reviews used for library collection decisions. Elizabeth is joined by academic librarian Pamela Hayes Bohanan to discuss 60 years of research and reflection about the limited exposure librarians get to the large corpus of potential acquisitions. While perspectives differ, there is little disagreement that publishers, editors, and book review publications are impacting what appears in your local public and academic libraries. Time to wrap up our New Wave Game and see if anyone survives! We're down to the final three volumes of the CD series Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the 80s, and either Kevin or Kornflake could still win. (But come on, our money is on Kornflake...) And we've reached the mid-80s, when there was no shortage of new wave hits in the Top 40. So we're talking about acts like Wang Chung, Thompson Twins, Katrina and the Waves, Animotion, Tears for Fears, Bananarama, and Men at Work. It seemed like nothing was off limits on the pop charts. A musical about chess? Sure. Vietnam-era news clips set to a dance beat? Absolutely. The Dream Academy had a hit that sounded like nothing else. Arcadia had a hit that sounded exactly like Duran Duran, and with good reason. There's even a trio of New England-area new wave bands represented here. (We all know 'Til Tuesday, but do you remember Miracle Legion? How about Rubber Rodeo?) So enjoy one last round of new wave madness, and then we can relax. Just like Frankie said. Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases TO KEEP SOMETHING UNDER WRAPS and IT'S HUSH-HUSH!In this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase to keep something under wraps. Now, if you're told to keep something under wraps, it means you're supposed to keep it a secret. You're not supposed to tell anyone about it. Maybe at work there's a new project that three people are working on and someone tells you about it, but they say, hey, you need to keep this under wraps for now. We're not telling anyone else at work. We're not telling any of our customers. It's a secret project. You need to keep it under wraps. So that would mean that you need to keep it a secret.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? Now, I did teach this phrase about three or four years ago. Maybe some of you saw that lesson, maybe some of you haven't heard about this phrase yet, but it means the same thing. It means that something's a secret. Let's say I'm planning a party for my mom and I tell my sister, but I just say, hey, it's hush hush. Don't tell any of mum's brothers and sisters yet because we think it might be a secret party. It's hush hush. Don't tell anyone about it at this point in time.So to review. To keep something under wraps means to keep it a secret. And if you say that something is hush hush, if you say it's hush hush, it means the same thing. It means that you need to keep that thing a secret. But, hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from a viewer. There's no name on this comment. And the comment is this. Thank you very much, Bob. Is it always cloudy like this where you live? And by response, no, but it has been quite cloudy lately.Hopefully we get some sunnier weather soon and we certainly have that today. It is a beautiful day out here today. It's nice and warm. It's about 20 degrees celsius right now. I don't know what that is in fahrenheit. 52, double it and add 40. I don't know, 70. You'll have to use an online converter. I used to be able to do that in my head, but for some reason it's slipped my mind right now. But, yeah, it's a gorgeous day today. I can actually hear my neighbor mowing his lawn. If you hear kind of a lawnmower in the background, you might have heard that or you might hear that.So you might be noticing I'm wearing something new today. I don't often spend money, but I bought a Blue Jays hat. The Toronto Blue Jays are the local baseball team here. Canada just happens to have a team in the American baseball League. I guess it's the North American League. Major League Baseball, it's called, and the Toronto Blue Jays are the team that is in Toronto.Jen and I went to see a few games last year. It was a lot of fun. Baseball is kind of a unique sport. It's not like anything else in the world because it moves a little more slowly than other sports. It's kind of fun to watch a baseball game because you can think for a bit, you can eat a hot dog, you can kind of just enjoy the weather. The times we went last year, we went twice. The roof of the stadium was open, so we could actually enjoy the weather and the sunshine as well. So that was really nice. Yep. I got a hat. I have to wear it in my video so I can write it off as a business expense. Sorry, I'm just kidding about that. But I probably will actually write it off as a business expense now that I think about it.So anyways, yes, beautiful weather here. It's the third week of May. It feels like summer today. What a great feeling. It's just so nice to be outside aSupport the Show.
EPISODE 32 - “The Mary Astor Purple Diary Scandal” - 04/22/2024 One of the most scandalous trials in early Hollywood history involved actress MARY ASTOR, who had made a name for herself playing virginal ingenues and good girls. Mary, who had kept a diary for most of her life, found her words used as a sensationalized weapon against her in her quest to regain custody of her 4-year-old child in 1936 after her acrimonious divorce from her doctor husband. The trial made worldwide headlines. Her sexy, salacious diary entries showed the world a more sensual side to our virginal Mary, and, in many ways, helped propel her career into the stratosphere. Listen as we discuss Mary Astor, her life, her career, and her shocking purple diaries that took center stage in a Los Angeles courtroom.
