Horizon was founded with a motto: Yours to Explore. The idea was to create a place where people could comfortably investigate faith and God. That notion wasn't something we grasped casually; it came directly from Jesus. His posture was warm, confident, and welcoming. He stood before skeptics and encouraged them to ask questions, test His miracles, and challenge His claims. The most compelling argument for His deity came from His behavior, and that model serves as the basis for Horizon's core values: culturally relevant, comfortable environment, excellence, family, challenging Bible teaching, everybody helping out, transformed lives, and multiplication. Join Horizon's Equipping Service as we study the Book of Matthew and learn to embody what Christ demonstrated during His ministry.

In this sermon, Martin O'Brien explores the meaning, significance, and practice of the Sabbath, emphasising its roots in Scripture and its relevance for our lives today. 1. What is Sabbath? Sabbath, derived from the Hebrew word "shabbat," means to rest or cease from labor. It was established by God after creation, as seen in Genesis 2:2-3, when God rested on the seventh day, modeling the rhythm of life He desires for humanity. It is a day set apart for rest, refreshment, and spiritual renewal, meant to bless both body and soul. 2. The Sabbath in Scripture The Sabbath is first mentioned in Genesis but reappears with deeper significance in Exodus 16:23 and is included in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8-11). Initially, Sabbath was a natural rhythm in life, but over time, it became a religious law that people often rebelled against. The Sabbath was intended as a time of rest and focus on God, but it can become burdensome when reduced to mere legalism. 3. Jesus' Teaching on Sabbath Jesus redefined and restored the true meaning of the Sabbath, challenging the traditions that had turned it into a rigid observance. Through His healing on the Sabbath (Matthew 12:9-13, Luke 13:10-17), He demonstrated that the Sabbath is a day for doing good and meeting human needs. He declared that "The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath" (Mark 2:27). 4. Why Do We Need Sabbath? - God's Example: God rested on the seventh day, establishing a divine pattern for us to follow. - Jesus' Example: Jesus practiced Sabbath, showing that it is part of a healthy, God-honoring life. - Physical Need: Our bodies need rest to be restored. - Spiritual Need: Sabbath allows us to find peace and joy by refocusing on God, as noted in Isaiah 58:13-14. Sabbath is more than a day off—it is a time to reconnect with God, restore energy, and reset our focus. It reminds us that our identity is in Christ, not in our work or achievements. By stopping to rest, we reaffirm our trust in God's provision and sovereignty. In conclusion, Sabbath is not about strict rules but about restoring the rhythm God intended for our lives. It brings peace, renewal, and joy as we step away from distractions and realign ourselves with God's purposes.

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath Matthew 12:1-8 (KJV)1 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

Jesus' teachings on the Sabbath are explored, highlighting how he showed mercy and compassion by healing on the Sabbath day, demonstrating that human need takes precedence over man-made laws. The Pharisees' attempts to control and condemn others through their own traditions are contrasted with Jesus' dominion over the Sabbath, declaring His authority as Lord of all things. Believers are encouraged to reflect on how they treat the Lord's Day, show mercy to one another, and trust in Christ's finished work for salvation. There are many words in our Bibles today that have been translated to English, and in doing so, has completely changed the meaning and implications behind the Hebrew and Greek words that were originally used. Those who have gone before us in the Christian faith have literally created doctrines and beliefs around misinterpretations of Scripture. The Christian faith today has a complete set of beliefs, yet their beliefs are missing the appropriate context and proper definitions of the words being used. Because of this, the doctrines we've created have taught us that certain Scriptures mean something that they actually do not. Many of these modern “New Testaments” compared to the ancient Aramaic and Greek texts clearly indicate that there are many “new ideas” out there which were never a part of the early Believers values. This is an issue today because this has massively affected our theology. The words have been mishandled and translated to mean something that they are actually not and this has damaged our understanding so deeply. The ancient serpent of old has no new tricks—just as he twisted Yahuah's word in the Garden of Eden, he is doing the same today. We can't help what has happened. We can't help what we don't know. But the bigger issue is that there are a remnant of voices today who are crying out, trying to breach this gap and tell people and warn people of what has happened, provide the verses and sources to back it up, yet they choose not to listen. Many don't want to deal with the thought that maybe, just maybe, everything they've been taught to believe has been a lie. Most Christians realize that while they read and study from Bibles that came from Greek and Hebrew text and terminology, very few give second thought to what the original words' meaning and intention behind them actually was. The enemy knows that the only weapon we have to fight with is the Word—don't you think his main strategy of deception would be to twist the very Word we are told to fight with and use it against us to “deceive the whole world?”Because that is precisely what has happened. The time of ignorance is over. And the times of this ignorance Yahuah winked at; but now commands all men everywhere to repent: Because he has appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he has ordained; whereof he has given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.Acts 17:30-31Verses Used: -Zephaniah 3:9-Jeremiah 1:10-Jeremiah 31:28-Hosea 10:12-13-Jeremiah 8:8-Joel 2:32-Romans 10:13-John 10:9-John 3:16-Psalm 3:8-Romans 10:4-Romans 7:12-Matthew 5:17-Jude 1:4-Regarding the Sabbath: Matthew 28:1, Mark 16:2, Mark 16:9, Luke 18:12, Luke 24:1, John 20:1, John 20:19, Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2Contact me: stephanie@promise-perspective.comVisit my website: www.promise-perpsective.com Support the show

I was talking with a friend this week about how the most terrifying stage with kids is when they learn to say “no.” He followed that up by expressing how his kids would typically say “no” about either seemingly irrelevant things or just super dangerous things. When he would ask them, “Please do not walk into the street,” his toddler would respond with a resounding, “No,” and would then dive headfirst into traffic. We laughed, and then we cried because it was too true.    Unfortunately, for many of us, our desire to say “no” to authority does not go away after our toddler years. Most people, myself included, do not like submitting to authority. I believe that it is our inability to submit to an authority that actually has us worn down and tired all the time.    In Matthew 12:1-7, Jesus makes one of His most scandalous claims in all the scriptures. “For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.” This comes after the Pharisees rebuke his disciples for plucking heads of grain to eat on the Sabbath.    The Sabbath is a very important commandment and a commandment that God cares deeply about. By Jesus' day, the Pharisees had taken this commandment and added so many rules and regulations to it that it completely missed God's original intention for giving it. God's heart behind the Sabbath law was that of mercy, rest, and worship.   Jesus did not come to revert us back to a more original version of the Sabbath law, He came to bring a new Sabbath reality that all started on that Sunday morning when the stone was rolled away, and the tomb was found empty!    Because of the work of Jesus, we do not have to wait 6 days every week for the opportunity to enjoy God's Sabbath rest. As Christians filled with the Holy Spirit, we have access to Sabbath rest, all day, every day. However, our biggest roadblock to enjoying this rest is our own desire to control our lives. This week let us take Jesus' words seriously and acknowledge that He alone has authority over our lives, so we can rest, trusting that He is ultimately in control.

Sign-up for my free 20 day devotional, The Word Before Work Foundations, at http://TWBWFoundations.com At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.” He answered, “Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. Or haven't you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and yet are innocent? I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the innocent. For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” (Matthew 12:1-8)Last week, we established that the solution to our restlessness can be found in Sabbath-like rest from the sources of our restlessness. Next week, we will look at how practically we as Christians do that in the 21st Century. But first, we must look at what Sabbath is not for today's Christian. And the best place to start is the origins of Sabbath itself. When God handed down the Ten Commandments to Moses at Mount Sinai, he commanded that the Israelites rest on the seventh day of each week. This was meant to be a sign of God's covenant with His people. And, of course, Sabbath was modeled after God's own day of rest from the work of creation on the first seventh day.In the Old Testament, the Sabbath was observed with strict rules and regulations. For example, the Israelites were prohibited from lighting fires (Exodus 35:3), gathering food (Exodus 16:23-29), and selling goods in the marketplace (Nehemiah 10:31). And the punishment for intentionally violating the Sabbath was nothing short of death (Exodus 31:14-15).Over time, the Israelites took the Sabbath to its most legalistic extremes, to the point in which, by the time Jesus came to earth, they even viewed healing on the Sabbath as a sin. When the Pharisees saw Jesus healing and picking grains in a field on the Sabbath in Matthew 12, they confronted him, calling out his seeming unlawfulness. Jesus responded by proclaiming “the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath” (Matthew 12:8) signaling that a new covenant was here in the person of Christ. In Mark's account of the same events, Jesus is recorded as saying that “Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath” (Mark 2:27). In other words, Jesus is saying that through Him, the Sabbath is no longer a command of the Law. Instead, it is a gracious gift for the restless. What did Jesus mean that Sabbath is now for man? How, practically, can we take advantage of that gift? And how can we rest regularly today, without making our rest legalistic and life-sucking? Those are the questions we will seek to answer next week.
