While the Pharisees confront Jesus about the Sabbath, this passage confronts the Pharisee in each of us.
"Lord of the Sabbath" - Luke 6:1-11 According to Luke Preached by Philip Alford at CityChurch Bristol on April 13, 2025.
The theme of the Gospel of Matthew is that Jesus is King. Through His signs and teachings, He proves Himself to be the Messiah, the Son of David, the Son of Man, the Lord of the Sabbath, and God. Matthew 12 continues that theme with a focus on Jesus' role as Lord of the Sabbath. As the Pharisees reject Jesus in spite of the fact that the Holy Spirit is upon Him, Jesus warns them of the unpardonable sin of blasphemy of the Holy Spirit and tells them that the sign they will receive is the “Sign of Jonah.” Pastor Dan walks us through Matthew 12 in this sermon preparing us for Resurrection Sunday.
Luke 6:1–11 (ESV)1 On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, "Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?" 3 And Jesus answered them, "Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?" 5 And he said to them, "The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath." 6 On another Sabbath, he entered the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7 And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him. 8 But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand, "Come and stand here." And he rose and stood there. 9 And Jesus said to them, "I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?" 10 And after looking around at them all he said to him, "Stretch out your hand." And he did so, and his hand was restored. 11 But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.
In Luke 6, Jesus confronts the Pharisees and declares something bold: “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” He's not just redefining tradition—He's reminding us what the Sabbath was always meant to be. The Pharisees saw it as a day filled with burdens, rules, and restrictions, but Jesus shows us it's a gift—a day made for us to rest, to be refreshed, to reconnect with God. And when compassion and human need meet tradition, Jesus makes it clear: mercy wins every time.So I ask you—are you keeping the Sabbath like a law or living it as a blessing? Do you see time with God as an obligation or as an invitation? Jesus didn't just talk about compassion; He demonstrated it, restoring a man's withered hand and revealing God's heart. Let's be people who follow His lead—resting well, loving deeply, and putting people before our preferences. Because the same Jesus who is Lord of the Sabbath is Lord over all, and He's calling us not into religion—but into relationship.

As you learn to live in the freedom you have in Christ, let other believers do the same.
I was introduced to "sabbath" when I first watched the movie/musical “Fiddler on the Roof” as a child. But it held little significance for me until 2007 when I was afforded the opportunity to visit Israel on a Holy Land trip. Our itinerary included visiting with a Messianic-Jewish family (folks raised in Judaism who have come to follow the way of Jesus) on Friday evening to witness and participate in a sabbath meal. Lighting candles. Singing songs. Eating wonderful food. Just…being. This ancient practice instantly blessed me in the present. Jesus claims, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” If that's true, what does this mean for a follower of the Lord of the Sabbath today? What is our relationship to rest? Our passage will help us to answer those questions by showing the concept of the sabbath in Jesus' day, and how His presence radically re-defined the relationship for all of God's people.
In this episode of Bible Reading and Coffee Drinking, we dive into Matthew 12, where Jesus confronts religious legalism and reveals the true meaning of mercy, Sabbath, and spiritual authority. From healing on the Sabbath to casting out demons and teaching about good fruit, Jesus shows that it's not just about rules—it's about the heart. Lord of the Sabbath In this stand alone sermon, Pastor Austin unpacks how Jesus redefined the Sabbath—not as a list of restrictions, but as a gift of renewal and relationship with God. When the Pharisees accused Jesus' disciples of breaking the Sabbath by picking grain, Jesus challenged their rigid rules and revealed the true heart of Sabbath rest. By looking at His response, we'll discover how Sabbath is meant to bring freedom, not burden, and how we can embrace its true purpose in our own lives. This week in Mark 2:23-3:6, Jesus is once again challenged by the Pharisees, this time on the Sabbath. They begin to seek to destroy him.
This Sunday, we will be working through a difficult section of Mark's gospel. There are several ways that this text can be misinterpreted or applied wrongly. It will be a challenge to navigate all these issues within a 35 minute sermon, so I would encourage you to read Mark 2:23-3:6 several times before Sunday. We will use a very simple outline to work through this account. Over the last several weeks, Jesus has demonstrated His authority to bring the Kingdom of God which He preached. He healed sickness, cast out demons, claimed authority to forgive sin, and compared himself to the bridegroom who has come for His bride. We have also seen the religious leaders increasingly oppose and confront Jesus. They doubt His authority to forgive sins, question his company of tax collectors and sinners, and call out His view on ritual fasting. Mark 2:23-3:6 shows the Pharisees challenge Jesus for breaking the Sabbath. First, they question His disciples picking and eating grain on the Sabbath day. To them, this amounted to reaping and threshing (doing work on the day God commanded for rest). Then, their hearts stand ready to accuse Him if he heals a man on the Sabbath. There are several ways we might go off the rails in interpreting and applying this passage. The most common is to deny that God fourth commandment still applies today. It certainly does. There are 10 commandments not 9. Jesus does not deny the creation ordinance of a sabbath rest. Yet, the Sabbath is not the legalistic, burdensome, & rule-filled reality that the Pharisees made it either. The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath (2:27). In the Christian life, we must keep all of God's word in balance and stay out of the ditches. Foundationally, the Pharisees' nit picking confrontations with Jesus were not because He kept company with sinners, didn't require fasting, or was neglecting the Sabbath. The real problem was their hard heartedness (3:5). The religious leaders knew that their view and teaching on God's salvation was fundamentally different than Jesus preaching on the Kingdom of God. Their view of legal obedience earning righteousness is not compatible with Jesus' call for sinners to come to Him in faith. Because of this, their hearts were hard to Jesus' identity and His call to repentance and faith. To receive Jesus would be to deny their teaching, their worldview, and their own righteousness. They would not do that. So, at the end of this passage, Jesus using the healing of a man's hand to expose their hearts and Mark 3:6 says began seeking how they might destroy Him. From this point, Jesus is headed to the cross as their hearts grow harder to His call. It is easy to veer off into topical expositions of the Sabbath and legal technicalities (some of which we will do) but this text shows Jesus authority as the Son of Man to rightly interpret the word (for He is the author) and call the most religious of sinners to salvation in Him. Jesus makes a bold claim in the passage today, that we can take comfort in. Check it out!

When the Pharisees berate Jesus' disciples for eating kernels of wheat on Sabbath, Jesus uses two passages from the Old Testament to correct the Pharisees. What do those passages mean? Let's find out together as we read Mark 2:23-28 and 1 Samuel 20:24-21:9.
"Jesus was just a common Jew who wanted the best for everyone." "Jesus was a liberal first-century rabbi." Those memes have captured much of the public's imagination about Jesus. But they both are 180 degrees off the mark, especially when we read what Jesus said about himself. He said, "I am Lord of the Sabbath," and "I am greater than the Temple". And certainly those don't square with the Jesus-the-liberalizing-rabbi meme. In this episode we explore what Jesus' self-speak indicates about how he perceived himself. I also offer an extended reflection on thinking about thinking. What is the best argument for the existence of mind? Instead of probing how inert matter produced consciousness, what counter (older) argument has more explanatory power? I also muse aloud about how, for the first time in my adult life, I do not feel like the Federal government is against us. What do I mean?

Join us as we explore what it means for Jesus to be the Lord of the Sabbath and how we, as citizens of His kingdom, can live free from the burdens of legalism and extend His mercy to others.
