Jesus teaches about the sabbath and offers us an insight into his true identity as Lord. (Lectionary #312) January 20, 2026 - Cathedral Rectory - Superior, WI Fr. Andrew Ricci - www.studyprayserve.com
This week we will be studying Mark 2:23–3:6 under the theme “The Life-Giving Lord of the Sabbath.” In these verses, Jesus confronts not only questions about rest and obedience, but the deeper issue of who has authority over life itself. The Sabbath was given as a gift, yet it had become a burden. Jesus does not abolish God's command; he fulfills it by restoring life and revealing himself as the One in whom true rest is found. When the Lord of the Sabbath is present, rules give way to mercy, and rest is no longer something to achieve, but something to receive.Series Summary: Fast-paced, urgent, and relentlessly focused on Jesus, the Gospel of Mark shows us not just what Jesus said, but what he did. Written for a Roman world hungry for power, Mark introduces a surprising King - one who comes to serve, to suffer, and to give his life for many. Over the coming weeks, we'll walk this road with Jesus, from the wilderness to the cross, discovering how the Servant-King's actions reveal the true good news - and what it means to follow him as disciples who take up our own cross and trust him with our lives.Add St. Marcus as your church on the Church Center App!Fill out our online connection cardHow can we pray for you? We are now in Talk 6 of our series RESTED. Here's a review of the amazing lessons we've learned so far: Talk 1, titled Rest, established that there's a great pandemic going on, called Overworking but Underliving. Talk 2, titled Work, shares that the Sabbath bestows two essential blessings: 1) a rhythm of rest; and 2) a rhythm of relationship. The key message: God wants to work with you. Talk 3, titled Time, gives God's good schedule for us to have a good time for work and rest. The key message: Follow God's Rhythm of Restoration. Talk 4, titled Jubilee, points out that Sabbath gives us time and space to remember our core identity—that we're the Beloved of God. The key message is: Remember who you are. Talk 5 is about Jesus, how He declared that He is the Messiah, created His Jubilee Team–and included us as part of the team. The key message: Your Jubilee has begun. Talk 6 is about taking the Sabbath seriously. The key message: God is giving you Real Rest.

Most people would try just about anything to cure themselves of a sickness or malady. We see so many products on our feeds claiming to heal us, make us healthier, younger, etc.…Today, Jesus seeks out a man who has been an invalid for most of his life and is superstitiously seeking healing. What will Jesus do? What does the person in need have to do? What will others say?

Who has the right to define God's Law? In this explosive confrontation, Jesus makes the ultimate claim: He is Lord of the Sabbath, possessing an authority greater than the Temple itself. This isn't an argument for breaking rules, but a revelation of who He is. He is the one to whom all Scripture points, the gentle Servant who fulfills the Law perfectly for us, delivering the mercy that the Pharisees' legalism could never provide. The Rev. Dr. Keith Haney, Assistant to the President for Missions, Human Care, and Stewardship in the Iowa West District—LCMS, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Matthew 12:1-21. The Gospel of Matthew bridges Old and New Testaments, presenting Jesus as the promised Messiah who fulfills the Law we could never keep and establishes His kingdom of grace for all nations. Written by a tax collector transformed by pure grace, Matthew reveals Christ as the true Son of David and Emmanuel (God with us) who challenges us with the crushing demands of the Law in His Sermon on the Mount to the sweet comfort of the Gospel in His death and resurrection. From royal genealogy to glorious resurrection, this verse-by-verse study proclaims the One who conquered sin, death, and the devil for us, now delivering forgiveness, life, and salvation through Word and Sacrament as He remains with His church always, even to the end of the age. Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations.
