In this episode of The Session, we are excited to welcome New Zealand's newest, and largest, single hop farm, Hop Revolution. Founder and plant scientist, Susan Wheeler, and CEO Jason Judkins, came all the way from New Zealand to visit American craft breweries and appear on our show to talk about their exciting new venture. We learn about the history of hop farming in New Zealand, as well as Hop Revolution's unique founding that is tied to rugby star, Terry McCashin, from the famous All Blacks. Susan and Jason are surprisingly, and refreshingly, forthcoming about the project ahead of them and how much they have to learn and how they will lean heavily on brewers to guide them all the way through their first harvest in 2020. Tune in and get the scoop on this exciting new hop venture! We're also joined by Shaun O'Sullivan from the 21st Amendment brewery, and get a visit from Kim Schimke of @kimsbaybrews fame (and also our Brewing Network social media minion). Beer. BBQ. Fireworks. Freedom. Right there in their name 21st Amendment Brewery celebrates one of the greatest freedoms of beer drinkers. Just in case you aren't aware, the 21st Amendment ended Prohibition in the United States, bringing beer (and other booze) back to the people on December 5, 1933, Repeal Day. Although the 4th of July is a big party for the brewery, co-founder and brewmaster Shaun O'Sullivan tells us Repeal Day (understandably) is their biggest celebration of the year. O'Sullivan joins us this week to talk about all those amazing freedoms. With label art that is all about America any of their beers are ready for the holiday. We talk grillin' out and get the scoop on their new Sparkale, a sparkling Rosé Ale and O'Sullivan's pick for the best Independence Day beer. Homebrewing and recipe development, the early days of canning craft beer, and reminiscing on some 21st Amendment beers of the past all come up in the conversation. If you're in San Franciso stop in their brewpub or check out their brewery and taproom in San Francisco. Otherwise, put on on some red, white, and blue, fire up the grill, and celebrate FREEDOM. A Change Can Do You Good — Keeping a Brand Fresh in a Dynamic Market Host: Michael Kiser Guest Speakers: Nanna Guldbæk (Lervig), Nick Dwyer (Beavertown), Shaun O'Sullivan (21st Amendment) It still feels almost as though modern beer has only just arrived in the UK. The last decade has been a whirlwind, with once traditional and iconic beer brands being met by those with modern, vibrant and striking designs. Brewers really are putting the can in canvas. But how do you maintain a modern image in such a dynamic market, and why rebrand when drinkers have already put their stock in your existing brand?

Sactown Union's Quinn Gardner leads a panel discussion on Opening Night of Sacramento Beer Week 2017. featuring a panel of some of the greatest pioneers of the Northern California beer scene. Listen, as Dr. Charlie Bamforth (UC Davis), Barbara Groom (Lost Coast Brewery), Judy Ashworth (Lyons Brewery Depot), Shaun O'Sullivan (21st Amendment Brewing), John Martin (Triple Rock, Drake's Brewing), and Michael Barker (Sactown Union) discuss what craft brewing is (and isn't), what role craft beer plays in the community, and just how far we've come in the last decade and where beer is going next. And all completely unedited. I'd like to thank Quinn for inviting me to record this event for posterity. Please enjoy not technically an episode of Barley & Me!
Host Ben Rice sits down with 21st Amendment's co-founder/head brewer Shaun O'Sullivan and comedian/pot activitist Ngaio Bealum, in episode 25 of Barley & Me. Recorded at 21st Amendment's new(ish) San Leandro location, we discuss the new location's previous history as a Kellogg's Pop Tart production facility, judging beer and weed, the slow and steady growth and expansion of 21st Amendment, plus first beer experiences and much, much more! Look for this episode on YouTube in the coming weeks, because we bothered to film it. So thanks to those debonair fellas for being themselves and making for some gorgeous video. As usual, host Ben Rice ruins everything. But it still turns out okay! Enjoy!
