POPULARITY
This week I get back to the roots of the show and talk about drugs, specifically alcohol. How does it work? What does it do in the body? Why is it so popular in so many cultures? How has capitalism both attacked and encouraged alcohol use at various times? Why did prohibition happen in the first place? How did our relationship with alcohol change as neoliberal capitalism expanded? Support the show
Send us a text Do you ever take a moment to think about the fact that Americans, the people of the land of the free, spent 13 years under Prohibition? Did you know that Americans used to seriously “drink like a fish”? And no, I'm not talking about fraternity men in college. I'm talking about everyone, everywhere, from George Washington's parties to lunchtimes in the manufacturing factories (until Henry Ford put a stop to it, you know, for efficiency purposes). Then Prohibition happened. What were the forces that drove Prohibition into existence? Our first and only constitutional amendment to be repealed, what was so severe about America under prohibition that it only lasted 13 years? How did a guy smuggle whiskey into America in an egg carton? All that and more on this episode with Wabash College Professor Nicholas Snow. Tune in! After more than a decade of Prohibition, Americans were tired of it. So, Congress proposed the 21st Amendment, which outlawed the 18th Amendment and ended nationwide prohibition. The states, municipalities, and counties could still enact their own prohibition laws, however, and many of them did. Center for Civic Education

The 18th Amendment, which banned the manufacture, sale, or transportation of alcohol within the U.S., might be the best example of unintended consequences. Prohibition helped start women's liberation, propelled the Jazz Age, and essentially created Organized Crime in the U.S.
The hosts discuss monetized feminism and then dig into the story of Prohibition and the woman who helped overturn it. Pauline Morton Sabin was a wealthy woman who switched political parties and became the voice and face of the movement to end Prohibition.

Prose and Bros is entering the winter months with a warm embrace. They'll be sampling 21st Amendment Brewing's "Fireside Chat" which will lead to too long conversations about presidents and the 21st amendment. But that won't stop them also discussing the unfortunately tragic history of Christina Rossetti, as well as her poem "Winter: My Secret." Grab a beer, nuzzle next to the fire, and enjoy this week's episode.
In (mini) episode 190. Tony & Eddie skip the film review and focus on what truly matters...beers. Are you an IPA lover? IPA hater? Somehow, if you're either, the boys think you might like an IPA that has...coffee in it? Yes. They're being serious. It may not sound good, but they think you should try. Listen to the episode for more details. The other beer reviewed tonight is more traditional. It's another experience on Eddie's Oktoberfest quest. As Cinefantics know, Eddie is typically looking for a sweeter Marzen when it comes to Oktoberfest brews - so does this one from Lavery come correct? Again, stay tuned until the end of the episode to find out.

In Episode 155, Tony & Eddie finally get to talk about Joker (2019). There was so much drama circling this film's release. So much good press. Almost immediate Oscar buzz callouts. It's another rated R comic flick, but does it stand out? Does it prove to be as shocking as we all heard? What about the likes to domestic terrorism? Are they here? Was Joaquin's performance as amazing as you probably heard? Tune into this week's episode to find out. The boys also both tried new beers from 21st Amendment Brewery. If you're a long time listener then you know this is a brewery that Tony & Eddie love. Did Monk's Blood and Tasty IPA keep that praise train moving along?

Salubrious salutations to you, dear listener! We've talked enough about it, so now it's time to dive in... to the very first episode of... The Food Court of Nerds! (Or FCON, for short) In this, the inaugural episode, we discuss the impossibility of Impossible Foods making an Impossible Steak (egads!) A local New England chain becoming bigger (oh my!) And Oreo's improbably stuf new cookie (gadzooks!) Introducing our very first very special guest: 21st Amendment Brewing's co-founder and Brewmaster Shaun O'Sullivan! Wherein we discuss his favorite beers, 21st Amendment's brewing philosophy... and plane-watching! This month's Beer: 21st Amendment Brewing's Brew Free or Die IPA And of course, the Pièce De Résistance... This month's Recipe! Courtesy of Jon: Pepper's Spicy Clams (and Pasta) by Chrissy Teigen Ingredients: Kosher Salt 12 ounces dried linguine 1 stick (4 ounces) unsalted butter 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 8 cloves of garlic, minced (Jon says: "More like 24 full cloves) 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1/2 cup dry white wine 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 pounds Manila clams, scrubbed 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley, (plus garnish, if you'd like) Directions: 1. First, cook the linguine al dente, keeping about 1/4 cup of the pasta water. Drain the pasta, then return to the pot. 2. Heat the butter + olive oil in a large skillet (medium heat) 3. When the butter begins foaming, toss in that gaggle of garlic + red pepper flakes. Cook until the garlic is fragrant and golden in color (don't burn it!) -- should take about 2 minutes. 4. Add the white wine and pepper -- cook until it all starts bubbling. 5. Add in the clams, increase the heat, and cover. You'll cook until the clams open (should take about 3 minutes). 6. Take those bad boys and dump 'em into the pasta pot - ditching the few that don't open. Cook it all for another few minutes. Add salt to taste. 7. Throw all of the remaining clam juice and pasta water in, warming on medium heat. 8. Dump the parsley in... mix a bit, and you're done! In Ep #77, Tony & Eddie fight like hell to get through a chat about Transformers: The Last Knight. This ambitious, but ultimately scatter-brained and difficult to follow film was surely not their favorite flick to watch. The boys talk Michael Bay, Transformers canon, or lack there of. They discuss the plot, the holes, the terrible new transformers and overall lack of empathy with nearly the entire cast. At least there was beer, folks! The breweries they tried this week we 21st Amendment and Hermit Thrush. Both were sours. Both were solid. Find out much much more in this latest episode of, The Cinemantics!
Hey all! This week Ryan and Alex try the interesting Watermelon Funk by 21st Amendment Brewery. In 2000, Nico Frexxia and Shaun O’Sullivan founded the 21st Amendment Brewery in San Francisco’s historic South Park neighborhood. They met in 1995, having moved to the Bay Area from Southern California, and gave up their careers to enter the booming brewery scene. At a brewing course at UC Davis, the two became friends, and 21st Amendment Brewery was born. (Yay!) Having features that are very “un-sour” like, Watermelon Funk sour ale feels very light. The watermelon flavor is very subtle while the tartness of the brew is much more noticeable. There is also a notable wheat flavor to the beer. We’ll also be calling comedian and author, Steve Hofstetter. Known primarily for his comebacks and masterful way he handles hecklers, Steve just released his first book, Ginger Kid, a memoir about his time in adolescence and the lessons he learned outside the classroom. This week on FDB - we debate why a certain Dunkin Donuts branch should hire a pig as their manager, the need for Tom Hanks as a best friend, what it might be like to have a third nostril, and more! Now please kick back, and enjoy another sit down with Friends Drink Beer.
