The boys drink and review Fireside Chat winter ale by 21st Amendment Brewery, then discuss The Northman, paganism, and Rod Dreher's take on how paganism presents an enchanted view of life. "The Northman" is basically the story of Hamlet set among the Vikings. Amleth witnesses his uncle murdering his father and carrying off his mother. He vows to avenge his father and rescue his mother. Years later, Amleth becomes a fierce warrior, but sells himself into slavery so he can be in the town of his uncle and get his revenge. It's an interesting movie, but the larger question addressed in the podcast is how this relates to modern man's lack of a sense of meaning and purpose, and the longing for enchantment. Modern secular, technological society is a fantastic thing. It's given us antibiotics and labor-saving technologies that are simply amazing. But there's no dispute that it's come at a cost. Secular society reduces life to the material, emphasizing logic, technology, and efficiency over mystery and meaning. While these advancements offer many benefits, Dreher argues that they leave a void, creating a sense of disconnection from life's deeper meaning. In stark contrast, the symbolic, hero-driven narrative of "The Northman" shows characters motivated by a sense of duty and destiny that transcends self-interest. It's an appeal to something timeless and heroic. But beyond that, there's a constant sense of immanent spiritual reality. The gods are as real in The Northman as the sky and the land. Dreher's analysis suggests that this type of worldview, which modernity often overlooks, fulfills a deep-rooted human desire to connect with the divine, the sacred, and the transcendent.

P&C drink and review Hell or High Watermelon from 21st Amendment Brewery, then, with special guest Longinus, discuss the cost of professional sports.  Why are we, in the words of Pigweed, willing to spend so much money to watch grown men play children's games?   But that's not to the point. The boys are focused on the cost of a baseball or football game. Why has it increased so much? Is it worth it?  From 1970 to the present – in today's dollars – the cost for a family of four to attend a baseball game is about 4x. Who pays this, and why?  Along with this increase in prices, we have an increase in coverage. When Pigweed was a lad, there was one, one-hour show on sports. Now, we have several 24x7 sports stations talking about sports all year long.  There's also the moral question. In a world that can't decide what a woman is, sports provides some clear guidelines. The player is either in or out. The ball is in the strike zone or it's not.  Another angle – people can't sit quietly with their own thoughts. They need a distraction. Every bar and restaurant has constant sports. Is sports filling a hole left by the lack of religion, or community? Also, to what extent is this a public question? Is it in the local government's interest to get people involved in local sports?

So I Married an Axe Murderer came hot off the heels of the mega hit Wayne's World. Unfortunately for Mike Myers, it could not replicate the famous skit's success. Banking just north of $11 million, So I Married and Axe Murderer was a box office bomb. But any child of the 90s will tell you that it's still a damn good time. This is peak Myers, a time when his oddball characters were still funny. It's also his attempt to play the generic male lead. Aside from his dual role of Stuart, the curmudgeonly Scottish father of Charlie, he's just your average joe. The results of that attempt are mixed. Perhaps if they weren't, Myers wouldn't have made it his life's purpose to play increasingly bizarre characters. I guess, what I'm saying is: It's all our fault that The Love Guru happened. Damn us all to hell. Now, sit back, hack open a Fireside Chat from 21st Amendment Brewery, and help resuscitate the downed piper! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Ken Hartoonian calls in to Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras to talk about the Vintage Beer Show at 21st Amendment Brewery on Saturday Nov. 4 from 9am-1pm. It is called the 39th Annual Western Regional Beer Can and Breweriana Show. Breweriana is anything brewery related. It can be a can, bottle, sign, coaster, bottle cap, neon sign or even some brewing equipment. The first show was held in Watsonville, hosted by the largest rose wholesaler in the state. They have extended the spirit of that show into an event where the public is invited to browse. A lot of brewers really appreciate brewing history. For example, there are lots of vintage beer signs at Russian River Brewing Co. When Herlinda asks Ken about the most unusual item in his vast collection, he mentions a can of 7-Eleven beer, from 1959. It came from a long-defunct brewery in New Jersey and was only made for a short time before it was discontinued. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Why Breweriana? Some collectors are willing to pay high prices for these items but they are not persons of average wealth. These people are just looking to diversify their assets, and some items can have demand among collectors. Some companies do keep collections of old products and labels for film productions, including beer labels. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Musical Beer Commercials of the 1950s To keep up the spirit of the 39th annual Western Regional Beer Can and Breweriana Show, this edition of the Brew Ha Ha podcast features three examples of beer commercials from the 1950s. First, at 0:48, a musical ad for Pabst Blue Ribbon with a chorus and jazz band, in the key of E-flat. Then, at 5:30, an ad for Blatt's Beer, with music and singing this time in A-flat. Finally, after the end of the conversation, at 13:20, a Firesign moment followed by an ad for Valley Forge Beer. It features music in the key of G-flat, unless they wrote it out in F-sharp instead. We actually have no way of knowing which key they used, but it has to have been written out for the band and singers, one way or the other. This is a unique enharmonic moment in the universe of musical beer ads.

Ryan Sentz is here this week to talk about how he and his brother bought back Funky Buddha, the Florida Brewery they sold to Constellation Brands six years ago. There's an interesting trend happening in beer these days. Small breweries that had sold to larger brewing companies are regaining their independence. The founders of Three Weavers in California re-purchased the brewery from Fireman Capital. 21st Amendment Brewery ended it's agreement with Brooklyn Brewery. And in the last month we've seen Appalachian Mountain Breweryfounders purchase the brewery back from Anheuser-Busch InBev and Florida's Funky Buddha going independent after a purchase from Constellation Brands.  Ryan Sentz, a co-founder of the brewery is my guest this week and he talks me through the early days of the brewery, the decision to sell in the first place and what life and business was like under Constellation. Constellation made a push into the craft space a few years ago with the splashy and billion dollar purchase of Ballast Point followed by Funky Buddha. The acquisition did not go as planned and after some devaluations Constellation sold Ballast Point to Kings and Convicts.  At that point, Sentz, who stayed on with Funky Buddha, knew that the brewery he founded could be next. He and his brother KC decided to make the move to re-acquire their brewery. For more Drink Beer, Think Beer check out All About Beer. Gangster Squad never equals the sum of its parts. Featuring a stacked cast—Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, and Emma Stone, to name a few—it's never more than a middling mob flick. And that's a problem. Why? Well, there are dozens of films in this genre, many of which capitalize on their premise far more than this does. Gangster Squad is essentially a 21st Century Untouchables without any of the style or substance that made that movie so great. Thus, despite strong efforts from the aforementioned cast, the material is never elevated. Hence why critics hated it, 30% on Rotten Tomatoes with 207 reviews; and audiences avoided it.  On a budget of $75 million, it grossed just over $105 million worldwide. One wouldn't move up very high on the ladder of underworld henchmen with those sorts of receipts. Smashing the Liquor Machine: A Global History of Prohibition (Mark Lawrence Schrad)

History Ago Go

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 22, 2022 49:31

When most people think of the prohibition era, they think of speakeasies, rum runners, and backwoods fundamentalists railing about the ills of strong drink. In other words, in the popular imagination, it is a peculiarly American history.Yet, as Mark Lawrence Schrad shows in Smashing the Liquor Machine, the conventional scholarship on prohibition is extremely misleading for a simple reason: American prohibition was just one piece of a global phenomenon. Schrad's pathbreaking history of prohibition looks at the anti-alcohol movement around the globe through the experiences of pro-temperance leaders like Vladimir Lenin, Leo Tolstoy, Thomás Masaryk, Kemal Atatürk, Mahatma Gandhi, and anti-colonial activists across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Schrad argues that temperance wasn't "American exceptionalism" at all, but rather one of the most broad-based and successful transnational social movements of the modern era. In fact, Schrad offers a fundamental re-appraisal of this colorful era to reveal that temperance forces frequently aligned with progressivism, social justice, liberal self-determination, democraticsocialism, labor rights, women's rights, and indigenous rights. Placing the temperance movement in a deep global context, forces us to fundamentally rethink its role in opposing colonial exploitation throughout American history as well. Prohibitionism united Native American chiefs like Little Turtle and Black Hawk; African-American leaders Frederick Douglass, Ida Wells, and Booker T. Washington; suffragists Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and Frances Willard; progressives from William Lloyd Garrison to William Jennings Bryan; writers F.E.W. Harper and Upton Sinclair, and even American presidents from Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln to Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Progressives rather than puritans, the global temperance movement advocated communal self-protection against the corrupt and predatory “liquor machine” that had become exceedingly rich off the misery and addictions of the poor around the world, from the slums of South Asia to the beerhalls of Central Europe to the Native American reservations of the United States.Unlike many traditional "dry" histories, Smashing the Liquor Machine gives voice to minority and subaltern figures who resisted the global liquor industry, and further highlights that the impulses that led to the temperance movement were far more progressive and variegated than American readers havebeen led to believe.HOST:  Rob MellonFEATURED BREW:  Blah, Blah, Blah West Coast IPA, 21st Amendment Brewery, San Leandro, CaliforniaBOOK:  Smashing the Liquor Machine: A Global History of Prohibitionhttps://www.amazon.com/Smashing-Liquor-Machine-History-Prohibition/dp/0190841575/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1BBARE9VWUYKL&keywords=smashing+the+liquor+machine+a+global+history+of+prohibition&qid=1642555938&sprefix=smashing+the+li%2Caps%2C398&sr=8-1MUSIC:  Bones Forkhttps://bonesfork.com/

Last but certainly not least, Richard Massi the President and Co-Founder of Fight On Makenna Foundation will tell us about the 2021 Bite for the Fight Food Festival happening on Saturday, September 25th. The Fight on Makenna Foundation was created in the memory of his 14 year old daughter Makenna who lost her battle with leukemia in September 2018. The Fight on Makenna Foundation's mission is to improve the quality of life for kids and families facing pediatric cancer. In their two short years of existence, they have raised over $200K to help fund programs in partnership with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to help kids and families as they deal with the rigors of cancer treatments. Makenna was a foodie (mostly carnivore) and loved friends, family, the Food Network, and the Philadelphia Eagles. So they created Bite for the Fight to showcase some of the best food, beer, wine, and spirits in the Philadelphia Area. Makenna was a fighter to the end of her short life and they brought that competitive spirit to the festival by allowing the restaurants to compete for the honor of the Best Bite voted on by the patrons of the festival. The 2019 event was even attended by Chef Robert Irvine. You say you STILL NEED MORE!!! Don't forget we still have our regular weekly segments from author, Courier-Post nightlife correspondent and The New York Times recognized blogger John Howard-Fusco for foodie news of the week, Chef Barbie Marshall who is a Chef Gordon Ramsay Hell's Kitchen Season 10 finalist and has appeared on Season 17 of FOX Hell's Kitchen #AllStars as well named Pennsylvania's most influential chef by Cooking Light will delight us with her observation of the week, highly acclaimed and respected Vegan Chef Christina Martin will delight with her ‘Healthy Bite' of week giving nourishing and wholesome advice, and a joke of the week from legendary joke teller Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling of The Howard Stern Show fame. Episode 235 - We Got The Ghost Clap: A Journey Through The Wan-iverse Pt 1. We know that the title of this episode is a bit suggestive, and that's because when you really think about it, being haunted by a ghost or a demon is a lot like having an std. You usually get it by doing something that seems fun at the time, but is ultimately a huge mistake. It takes the help of a professional, and a lot of prayer to make it go away. And if you spend more than an hour with Mike, he'll tell you about the time that his dad managed to get rid of one simply by telling it to go away. This week marks the return of our not-so-silent partner, Michael, and the historic third episode in a row for Vito Power. So we grabbed some Hell Or High Pomegranate from 21st Amendment Brewery, some Chasing Ghosts from Epic Brewing, dove crucifix-first into the James Wan-iverse, and got a pretty nasty case of the ghost clap. She starts from her early days helping Franklin Roosevelt with the 1920 Election and the tragedy of FDR being stricken with polio in 1921. She explains the importance of LeHand and how she became a key figure in FDR's inner circle. She details the relationship Missy had with the Roosevelt's and how she became almost like a member of the family. Smith talks about the gubernatorial races in 1928 and 1930 and how that prepared Franklin Roosevelt for a presidential run in 1932. The entire way to the White House, Missy LeHand was by FDR's side. The discussion also covers how the president shielded his disability from the public. The talk finishes with the untimely death of Missy LeHand and the lasting importance she had on FDR, the New Deal, and the nation.HOST: Rob MellonFEATURED BREW: Fireside Chat Winter Spiced Ale, 21st Amendment Brewery, San Leandro, CABOOK: The Gatekeeper: Missy LeHand, FDR, and the Untold Story of the Partnership that Defined a Presidencyhttps://www.amazon.com/Gatekeeper-LeHand-Partnership-Defined-Presidency/dp/1501114972/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=missy+lehand&qid=1610603614&s=books&sr=1-2WEBSITE: http://margueritelehand.com/MUSIC: Bones Fork

Bloodshot, which is based on a Valiant comic book of the same name, centers around Ray Garrison (Vin Diesel). Garrison is a deceased soldier whose body is donated to—or stolen for the purposes of—science. He is then augmented—infused with nanite technology that can heal him of injuries and empower him beyond natural limits. Dr. Emil Harding (Guy Pearce), who saved him and equipped him with this hardware, is using Garrison, or Bloodshot, as an ends to a means. And as the trailer alludes to a little too heavily, Harding may not be all that trustworthy. The conceit, though not entirely unique, is a fun one. Garrison is a weapon, and the best parts of the movie are when we get to see that weapon being deployed. And similar to most Diesel vehicles, Bloodshot is also a platform for his unique, gravelly, and brooding onscreen presence. Bloodshot never attempts to reinvent the wheel. In a crowded landscape of superheroes, that could be construed as a negative. Yet it does give us a hefty amount of its titular character kicking ass and taking names; it does so through innovative action set pieces that provide more than enough bang for the buck. Unfortunately, its premiere was a dud; and like the fate of many other films over the course of the next few months, it was a victim of a circumstance beyond its control. The COVID-19 pandemic limited its theatrical run to just that opening weekend and a couple days thereafter. Though it wasn't tracking well to begin with and grossed just over $29 million worldwide in that frame, its still a bummer for all of those involved. Soft opening or not, a film's main source of revenue comes from its theatrical receipts. With a budget somewhere in the $40-45 million range, it's not out of the realm of possibility that this movie could've broken even at some point, maybe even earning it a sequel. Its proceeds are only one casualty of its box office stumbles. Any aspirations there may have been for a small scale Valiant universe of films are probably terminated, as well. If one of their most popular characters can't generate interest, why would others? In any event, at least we got this one; and it is big, brash, dumb fun. So sit back, fill a frosted mug with a Brew Free or Die Blood Orange IPA from 21st Amendment Brewery, and reminisce about some fond memories—preferably ones that don't incite your thirst for revenge! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla are getting some much needed upgrades to take down smarmy Guy Pearce's cabal of augmented super soldiers! This Week’s Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Does Bloodshot ever amount to more than an also-ran entry into the packed field of superhero cinema?  (00:00) Name that Vin Diesel Character – Based on the descriptions I provide, Capt. Cash and Chumpzilla attempt to identify different characters from Vin Diesel's filmography. () Recommendations – The lockdown continues, so find a local organization to contribute to if you can, and then enjoy our recommendations. Next up, we continue our series of quarantine specials (i.e. films that were released early on-demand because of the ongoing crisis) with Birds of Prey! () And, as always, hit us up on Twitter or Facebook to check out all the interesting factoids—the niche comic book characters we'd like brought to the big screen and more—from this week’s episode!
