Join Native Nevadan and visual artist Nick Larsen in a captivating episode on @kwnk97.7 as he discusses his solo exhibition Old Haunts, Lower Reaches currently featured at the Nevada Museum of Art. Joining him for the interview are two friends from Santa Fe - where Nick currently resides, artwork and podcaster Chelsea Weathers and writer Jenn Shapland (whose latest book Thin Skin is available now at your favorite independent bookstore). In conjunction with the interview, Nick curated an hour-long playlist - I Want to Live on An Abstract Plain - evoking a drive to the Nevada ghost town Rhyolite, the subject of some of the work in Nick's exhibition. Listen to the playlist, HERE. More on Nick Larsen and the exhibition Old Haunts, Lower Reaches (on view Jan 20 - July 7, 2024 at the Nevada Museum of Art): Old Haunts, Lower Reaches is an exhibition of new work by Nick Larsen (b. 1982) that excavates history, possibility, identity, and place. Comprised of layered collage pieces, textile-based architectural models, and image projection, Larsen explores what is present and visible in the desert landscape and, perhaps more importantly, what isn't. Influenced heavily by the artist's experience working for an archaeological firm focused on the Great Basin region, research for Old Haunts, Lower Reaches began when Larsen discovered a fading layer in the history of the ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada. Rhyolite (located thirty miles from Death Valley National Park) served, at one point, as the proposed site for a planned queer community, Stonewall Park, envisioned by two men from Reno in the 1980s. Contextualized by the history of Rhyolite, Stonewall Park, and his own life, Larsen speculates pasts, presents, and futures for this desert locale. In the words of the artist, “The desert is an environment defined by what it lacks, its bleakness an invitation to project possibilities for both what could have been and what might be on what is often perceived as empty.” Repurposing materials to create his layered collages and sculptures, Larsen's speculative practice also serves as a kind of “making do,” using what is at hand to give form to an invisible history or an unattainable future. Nick Larsen was raised in Northern Nevada and currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Listen in on April 20th at 9am on KWNK 97.7FM to explore how art and music intertwine with Nick Larson.

We're finally easing into summermode this week with our last full interview of the season and this is a great one! Proxima Parada's Nick Larson and Kevin Middlekauf have been friends since college in San Luis Obispo, CA, and have crafted a musical career together underpinned by the strong support of their fans and local community. Now, almost ten years into this, they're on their fifth album, Second Brother, released in 2021 and their free-flowing and sun-soaked indie soul vibes feel fresh and organic as ever -- most apropos for a native-California band. While their growing fanbase had been built on hardwork and much love, in late 2022, when a video clip of their music went viral on a popular TikTok channel and earned over 30 million views, these guys were launched well beyond their expectations -- a much welcomed turn of events for any band, let alone for Nick and Kevin who love to tour, meet their fans, and connect with audiences in a live setting. With two new singles currently out, "So Many Ways to Get Downtown," and "Tunnel Through a Mountain," these ambassadors of forward motion are ready to roll through 2023 and beyond! Come learn more about how Proxima Parada balances success while remaining true to one's self and loyal to their community on this episode of Roadcase.
A great conversation revolving around upland hunting with flushers with Nick Larson of the Bird Shot Podcast!
Singer-songwriter Gabe Larson is the artistic gravity behind Waldemar, a heartland indie rock band (think The War on Drugs and The National with a dash of Willie Nelson), based in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Waldemar combines soaring vocals and poignant, confessional lyrics against a dense backdrop of sweeping guitar tapestries and synth textures to deliver a sonic freight train of an album. The new record Ruthless is a journeyman musician's fixation, the renegade harmonies of a blue-collar poet.Written and recorded over a span of five years, Ruthless is an act of remarkable patience and commitment. For two of those years, Larson spent every moment outside of his job sanding floors, painstakingly transforming a weathered, century-old horse barn on his property into a professional recording studio with his brother and bandmate Nick Larson. The studio is hidden in plain sight, nestled along an alley in Eau Claire's North Side Hill, blocks away from the old Uniroyal tire factory. The setting is incredibly generative and inspiring. Across the street is an elementary school, complete with the sounds of laughing children at play, and in the industrial buildings nearby, hundreds of laborers maintain the neighborhood's workaday heritage.“As physically exhausting as it was to build the studio, making this record was even more grueling mentally and emotionally” Larson explains. “I found myself in a season of deep uncertainty. Everything was in question. I had deep fears that all I thought I knew about the world, family, politics, spirituality, ultimate reality, who I can trust etc. perhaps was wrong. Many questions still remain, but I've been slowly finding a strange peace in knowing that life is always lived amidst uncertainty and the only way forward is trust.”“Recording the album was a long chase” recalls Larson, sighing as he reflected on the months of late nights turned to mornings arduously working alone in his studio. Many of the songs underwent extensive revisions. Songs like Limbo, Ruthless, Patience, Ultimatum and Trust went through various cycles of being fully recorded, scrapped, re-recorded, and deleted again until they finally found their form. “I never knew what exactly got lost along the way, but whatever it was, it was essential, and the fastest way to re-finding the song for me was to delete everything and start over.” Other songs like the highway-worthy Longing, or the slow burn standout Summer Rain came forward with surprising immediacy; the latter being written and fully recorded during a spell of 10 overcast August days.Larson often worked long stretches by himself but these seasons of solitude were punctuated by sessions of productive collaboration with his bandmates Nick Larson and Colin Carey (drums), Josh Garcia (guitar), John Roemhild (bass) and Jordan Coffland (keys) along with additional help from other Eau Claire musicians. Most of these sessions were individualized, opting to bring his bandmates in one at a time to build out parts on the songs. The recording process was insular, gradual and granular, each layer laid like another brick in the wall, slowly climbing upwards to completion. This episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

This week we're happy to sit down and hang out with our good friend, Nick Larson from the Birdshot Podcast. We always enjoy spending time with Nick and picking his brain about all things grousey but we also had the opportunity to learn more about the Upland Gun Company and all the cool stuff they're doing. If you're looking for a piece of art to carry around the woods and pass down through the family, then you should absolutely check them out and consider building your own custom gun. Yes, you read that correctly... build your own custom gun. We talk with Nick and learn about all sorts of stuff like english grips, what he looks for in a gun, Nick's advice for people getting fitted for a gun, and a ton more. Then we jump into a good discussion catching up on Nick's dogs and we learn how he coached his younger dog, Rose. She has had a couple seasons under her belt and is really becoming a fantastic grouse dog, so it's nice to learn more about ol' Rose. Bob and Nick talk through how people should walk up on a point and coach your dog to stay steady so you can have the best chance of pinning a grouse and creating a shot opportunity. If you've ever grouse hunted before, you know that it's easier said than done. Then we chat about hunting several guys and several dogs in the woods. A lot of people don't think about how tricky that can be but really, it's an art form. It's always good to hang out with Nick and talk dogs, guns and birds. If you somehow live under a rock and haven't spent time enjoying his podcast then check it out... you won't be disappointed. Cheers to you. Are you interested in hunting with the Lone Duck Crew? Check out the link here and maybe you'll win a free hunt!

On October 19, 2018, sunny skies combined with blustery winds and warmer temperatures, 25 mph and 63 degrees to be exact, led to an oddly successful day in the grouse woods. Too warm and too windy to be considered ideal grouse hunting conditions, I hiked 9.24 miles and burned 2,624 calories over the course of 5 hours, 29 minutes and 36 seconds of hunt time. And best of all, after all the miles, minutes and calories, I flushed 16 ruffed grouse and 28 American woodcock while managing to bag 4 grouse and 3 woodcock.Read more at projectupland.com.
