Running Life: A Fitness Protection Production

A funny story about a bootleg cassette tape from 1994 Russia provides the backdrop to discuss two hot button concepts which have been reduced to trigger words: ‘wellness’ and ‘body image’. The two are intertwined in ways that matter a LOT.   Coach MK’s brain has been en fuego since she emerged from a year of chronic pain spent almost entirely in bed and started the long journey back to reclaiming her body as well as her identity. What does a healthy body look like, what does it feel like? What IS health anyway and who gets to decide who is healthy and who is not? Can you love a body that doesn’t function the way you want it to, a body that doesn’t look the way you want it to? A body that is in constant pain? What kinds of bodies are we REALLY allowed to celebrate and love, and what does 'loving yourself' look like?   These issues are thorny and tough to unpack, but the intersection of ‘wellness’ and ‘body image’ seems like a good place to launch a conversation we are calling Brainfire of the Vanities...because caring about your appearance is VAIN and you shouldn’t do that, unless you’re ugly then CARE MORE DAMMIT LOVE YOURSELF and lose some weight unless someone thinks you are too skinny then EAT MORE DAMMIT AND DON’T EXERCISE SO MUCH LOVE YOURSELF unless your BMI is high then REDUCE IT AT ALL COSTS BECAUSE OMG MATH YA’ALL LOVE YOURSELF...it never ends. You cannot win.   The messages from society are conflicting, but we hope that the coaches’ message is clear: you are easy to love. There are two places a person can be in any given moment: “where I want to be,” and “not there YET”. It’s okay to be okay, and it’s okay to NOT be okay. You are in the right place, a safe place, where you will be #coachedandloved until you see that you have been #winningatlife all along.   (We don’t need to know anything about you to love you...unless you can’t find your size in our threadless shop, we need to know that! We'd never intentionally leave you out! Tell us which size you need and we’ll keep bugging our suppliers. Currently, we can offer the unisex shirts up to 5x, and plan to offer up to 8x in multiple fits and cuts in 2020).   Complete show Notes including references over on the blog: https://www.coachedandloved.com/blog/the-fitness-protection-podcast-brainfire-of-the-vanities-part-1-wellness-and-body-image   These are NOT affiliate links. Today I'm so excited to introduce you to Christy Harrison, non-diet dietitian and host of the Food Psych podcast. There's so much in this episode, it's kinda tough to summarise it, but here are some highlights: we discuss the biology of why diets don't work, and, how when you really dig into the literature, it's not an evidence based practice. This raises an interesting question around the ethics of recommending weight loss diets. We also talk about why it's not intuitive eating if you're counting macros or calories and how those things may be keeping you in disordered eating. Christy shares so much insight and wisdom into the intuitive eating process, as well as her own experiences with recovering from an eating disorder. Finally we talk about how to be responsible when sharing messages of body positivity from a place of thin privilege. Buckle in kids, this is a great episode filled with so much great information; I have a feeling you're going to love Christy. This episode is sponsored by Symprove probiotics. Symprove are offering their 12 week course of probiotics for £120 exclusively for Don't Salt My Game Listeners - place your order by calling 01252 413600 and quoting 'DSMG'. {Christy on Instagram | Twitter | Facebook} https://twitter.com/chr1styharrison https://www.facebook.com/FoodPsych/ {The Food Psych Podcast} https://christyharrison.com/foodpsych/ {Christy's Website} https://christyharrison.com/ {Shrill - Lindy West} http://amzn.to/2w2Bsuw {My Fat Friend on Twitter} https://twitter.com/yrfatfriend {Flexible Dietary Control vs. Intuitive Eating} https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26162949 {Isabel Foxen Duke} http://isabelfoxenduke.com/ {Eating in the Light of The Moon} http://amzn.to/2vlykxr

Last month, Lindy West joined Papercuts for an event for the paperback release of SHRILL, her book of essays about the making of a funny feminist, coming of age in a culture that’s hostile to women, especially fat women. It was wonderful to have Lindy join us with 450 fans at the First Church JP in April. But before her event, Lindy discussed reproductive rights and her project Shout Your Abortion with Carol Sanger, author of ABOUT ABORTION. Carol Sanger is the Barbara Aronstein Black Professor of Law at Columbia Law School, and her book Abort Abortion takes readers on an insightful, original, and eye-opening guided tour of the practices, culture, and legislation behind terminating pregnancy in twenty-first century America. Lindy West is a pop culture critics and comedian and a weekly columnist at the guardian. SHRILL is a new York times bestseller and was named a Best Book of the Year by NPR, Esquire, the LA Times, and Newsweek.  Copies of SHRILL and ABOUT ABORTION are for sale in-store at Papercuts J.P. at 5 Green Street in Boston, or online at papercutsjp.com. Thanks for supporting your local independent bookstore.
