SEASON 3 EPISODE 130: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) BREAKING NEWS: A Reagan judge, an Obama judge, and a Trump judge walk into a courtroom and rule Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs - which not only crashed our economy but that of the entire world's - are not a legal use of the 1977 laws empowering him to take actions in the event of an economic emergency. This is not just any court. It's the United States Court of International Trade. Trump already appealed. Stephen Miller already called it a "judicial coup." The fact that America's corporations simply went along with Trump's crap when it knew - as the court knew - this was executive overreach - is its own problem. The halt on the tariffs will itself probably be halted by the appeals. So the re-shaping of the market will be re-re-shaped by the judges, and re-re-re-shaped by the further litigation. That, of course, is not Trump's problem. His only job is to break stuff. SPECIAL COMMENT: Now it's Governor Gretchen Whitmer has learned the lesson - twice. Never appease Trump, never negotiate with Trump, never cooperate with Trump, never support anything Trump wants, never do anything Trump wants. All that registers with him is: you are easier for him to destroy. She sucked up to him. She worked with him. He tricked her into appearing at his photo-op. She hid her face behind a folder like it was a perp walk. Now, he says he's looking into PARDONING THE TERRORISTS CONVICTED OF TRYING TO KIDNAP HER. There is only one way Gretchen Whitmer is going to SURVIVE Trump, Governor. Apple is going to SURVIVE Trump, Tim Cook. There is only one way Columbia is going to SURVIVE Trump, Claire Shipman. There is only one way the White House Correspondents are going to SURVIVE Trump, Eugene Daniels. If you haven’t figured it out yet, I’ll spell it out. Doing what he wants only tells him you will DO WHAT HE WANTS. So he comes back and gives you ANOTHER list of what he wants. He’s a blackmailer. He’s a crooked businessman. He’s a bully. There is only one way to SURVIVE Trump and that is to DESTROY Trump. In a world of White House Correspondents, be the PENTAGON Correspondents. In a world of Apples, be Wal-Mart. In a world of Columbias, be a Harvard. Put your hands on Trump’s shoulders and knee him in the groin. Stand up to him and you can then own HIM, like the Harvard newspaper op-ed writer who has proposed settling the disputes between her school and Trump by challenging Secretary of "Education" Linda McMahon, the wife of the wrestling slime bag, to a Steel Cage Match. ALSO: TRUMP CONFESSES to operating on Russia's behalf and to protecting Putin. HE LEARNS for the first time of the Wall Street analysts mocking him with the tariff acronym "TACO" ("Trump Always Chickens Out") and he chickens out. Turns out Tom Homan also worked for the top Private Prison company. A woman who contributed a million to Trump gets a pardon for her jailbird son. Anybody remember Rudy Giuliani's alleged boast he could sell you a pardon for two million, to be split between him and Trump. And a past president's grandson has died. The president he was the grandson of, left office in... 1845. B-Block (33:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Kristi Noem and the camel she rode in on. Jesse Watters and Rep. Tim Burchett try to make fun of men using straws not remembering there's a photo of Trump at Yankee Stadium using a straw. And boy did THIS sound familiar: Rupert Murdoch just buried a New York Post reporter who followed all the rules and instructions Murdoch's minions had laid out for him, because somebody didn't like the story... Just like in 2001 Rupert personally fired ME for doing exactly the same thing (C-Block 43:00 THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL). The punchline is the reporter's name is Josh Kosman and last September he was the guy at The Post who called and told me they were about to update the RFK Jr/Olivia Nuzzi sexting story by claiming I had lived with Olivia. So I busted his scoop and put the story out immediately. Now we're in the Rupert Isn't A Journalist Club. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
SEASON 3 EPISODE 129: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45 SPECIAL COMMENT) The Trump Mental Illness Crisis - and Cover-up -worsens. This kind of reality detachment, in such different venues, on such different topics, from turning the West Point graduation ceremony into advice on when to marry a trophy wife to demanding somebody pay him a cut of what Harvard takes in tuition (and mistaking $52 Million for $52 Billion)... this kind of mental incapacity from any other president, at any other time – including Trump himself, seven or eight years ago – would have been greeted by wall-to-wall television and online coverage and banner newspaper headlines. Instead within 12 hours it was all forgotten so our national media could ignore the extinction-level-event crisis of a president gone fully insane, so it could return to regularly scheduled programming about how the PAST president wouldn’t instantly admit his acuity game had slipped to a B, B-minus. The Trump Trophy Wife remark, to say nothing of the overnight demand of a taste of the tuition action at Harvard, vanished by the time the Sunday news shows hit. Including the Sunday news show hosted by Jake Tapper. ESPECIALLY the Sunday news show hosted by Jake Tapper. Also missing from Tapper's show – and the others – the reality that Tapper and his co-author, gossip writer Alex Thompson, are going to have to withdraw their book about President Biden’s acuity issues. From Politico, Semafor, Breaker, and other outlets comes the not-so-startling truth: these idiots fact checked next to nothing. There's also an internal revolt against Tapper at CNN. MEANWHILE: What the hell is wrong with Kristi Noem, and why is Harvard doing so well in fighting back against Trump while my old colleague Claire Shipman and Columbia are circling the drain? B-BLOCK (36:40) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Death pimp and Republican Congressman Andy Clyde makes it easier to shoot people and buy his guns. Tim Walz says "Gestapo" and the right freaks out when it should be the left freaking out because he didn't say it last October. And Bill Maher has kissed more MAGA heinie yet still thinks anybody thinks he's a liberal. C-BLOCK (50:45) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It's anniversary time! 24 years since I asked Rupert Murdoch how I should cover a story about Rupert Murdoch selling a baseball team for Rupert Murdoch's TV Sports network, and when I did what his office told me, he fired me. On this Thursday edition of Sid & Friends in the Morning, Sid emphasizes how Israel's war with Hamas isn't just on its way to the West, but it's already here, after two Israeli embassy staffers who were about to be engaged were gunned down outside an event at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC, last night — by a suspect who shouted, “Free, free Palestine” as he was taken into custody. Sid relays a message in response to his Jewish brethren: Be vigilant in the face of evil. Our survival depends on it. In other news of the day, Columbia University interim President Claire Shipman uses her commencement address to defend pro-Hamas lunatic Mahmoud Khalil while she's nearly booed offstage, President Trump's "big, beautiful bill" passes through the House, the President sits down with the South African President in The Oval Office following allegations of white genocide in the country, and the New York Knicks choke away Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Finals series against the Indiana Pacers. SEASON 3 EPISODE 125: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: What do you like least? Suspending Habeas Corpus? Breaking the law by threatening to arrest members of Congress for obeying the law? Or Trump accepting a half billion dollar impeachable illegal bribe from the government of Qatar that the Attorney General has ruled ISN’T illegal and by the way the Attorney General used to be a lobbyist FOR the government of Qatar? They’re all nation-destroying events but bluntly there is no way back from a suspension of Habeas Corpus. It’s a one-man dictatorship then – because if you think SUSPENDING Habeas Corpus ‘just for undocumented immigrants’ is somehow acceptable on its face, remember two things. One is: that there would be NO HEARINGS and NO LEGAL RECOURSE for ANYONE seized in this way so that all they would have to do is CLAIM that YOU are an undocumented immigrant to rationalize disappearing you, and you would not have a hearing at which you could prove you were a citizen, and you would not have a lawyer to appeal the decision not to GIVE you a hearing. And Stephen Miller didn't even say 'we'd only suspend it for undocumented immigrants.' Of course threatening to arrest members of Congress for exerting their legal right of oversight to the Concentration Camp ICE just opened in Newark by accusing them of assaulting agents (you know: The Congresswoman hit my fist with her face!) is bad and it mainlines back to the idea that they could just arrest them and under suspended Habeas Corpus just disappear them. As Congressman Michael 'I'm Too Dumb To Realize I'm Calling For My Own Arrest' McCaul now says of the Jersey Democrats "you cannot be complicit with gang violence against our law enforcement. And I think perhaps that’s what it comes down to.” ALSO: Trump's new Qatari plane is an illegal, impeachable offense but since the AG already registered as a Qatari agent, just hit the shrug emoji. They've accused The Secretary of Scotch with plagiarism at Princeton. They fired the Librarian of Congress and Karoline Lie-vitt is so stupid she thinks kids check books out of the Library of Congress. Trump now wants Jeanine Pirro as interim U.S. Attorney in DC, which allows us to flash back to the time she lost a page of her speech announcing she was running for Senate and just stood there until they found it for her. And of course, there's a new Pope. Father Bob. Father Bob the White Sox fan. Meaning our Nancy Faust, who went back to the White Sox games yesterday to reprise her role as the greatest stadium organist of all time, is right when she says "Who knew? All those years I literally had a papal audience!" B-Block (46:27) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: This time they're all people I know and used to respect who have failed the world. Gavin Newsom has again proposed appeasing Trump. Bob Iger has again carried an immeasurable amount of propaganda water for Trump. And Claire Shipman, whom I adored, has stood by as Columbia University (you know, the place with the Journalism School) suspended four of its own student reporters for...reporting. They also talk about President's Trump's remarks over the weekend saying he is “not joking” about a third run for the presidency. Plus, they look forward to Wednesday, which Trump has labeled “Liberation Day” as he plans to invoke new tariffs. Then, they discuss University of Michigan's dissolvement of DEI programs and the installation of journalist Claire Shipman as the latest interim president of Columbia University. And finally, Tom Bevan talks to RealClear Investigations writer Lee Fang about how major Democratic donors provided millions to fund the social media influencers behind the “Bratt Summer” movement during Kamala Harris' 2024 presidential campaign.

SEASON 3 EPISODE 100: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump thinks we are not vulnerable to attack because the Atlantic Ocean separates us from Europe. He literally wrote this yesterday. This illusion of oceanic walls was shattered no later than the day the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941 and more likely the first time a German craft was seen off the shores of this country during the First World War. It's madness. It's disqualifying. And it got lost amid the madness about calling Zelensky a dictator and threatening Ukraine and Trump describing himself as "King" and and and... "This war is far more important to Europe than it is to us. We have a big beautiful ocean as separation.” Ironically, the man who disproved the "separation" was Charles Lindbergh with his solo crossing of the Atlantic and it is Lindbergh's America First Isolationists of the '30s whom Trump is now emulating. If you've ever wondered what it would have been like had Lindbergh become president and done a deal with Hitler, stop wondering. We're living through it now - only with Putin. AND DON'T DISMISS THE "KING" STUFF: “Congestion Pricing Is Dead. Manhattan and all of New York is saved. Long live the king.” I don’t know who the king could BE in this construction if Trump doesn’t mean Trump. I do know a Tea Party slob Trump made Deputy White House Chief of Staff promptly tweeted it with an AI image of Trump in fetching king’s robes that like his suits was clearly cut to hide his belly. The official White House account then put out a fake magazine cover with him wearing a crown two or three sizes too small. It is tempting to dismiss this as trolling but at minimum this is part of the effort to make him look omnipotent and mandated instead of a president with 49-point-eight percent of the vote and a disapproval poll rating that went from 41 percent on inauguration day to 51 percent last week. B-Block (31:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Markwayne Mullin makes everybody really uncomfortable at a Senate hearing. The NHL somehow thinks Trump's threats against Canada are an excellent marketing tool for their little hockey game tonight. And Stephen A. Smith thinks it's an embarrassment that people keep saying he should run for president and by people he means himself and by embarrassment he means please somebody say it. C-Block (42:20) COMIC RELIEF: Two lighter stories. There's the weirdest thing ever said to me by an athlete in an interview, by the late hockey great Bobby Hull, who is posthumously in the news. And there was a flashback to my original MSNBC show at of all places The Animal Medical Center. And the flashback involved making fun of Wolf Blitzer.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today on the show we have one-half of one of my favorite writing duos: BBC's Katty Kay who, along with fellow journalist Claire Shipman, has authored five books that are all about advancing womanhood. The bulk of our conversation today centers around The Confidence Code: The Science and Art of Self-Assurance— What Women Should Know, addressing specifically the confidence gap between men and women, which is keeping women from achieving their full potential. Confidence is something that matters so much but is so rarely spoken about like this—and conversations like this will hopefully move the needle forward. We also talk about the duo's books Womenomics: Work Less, Achieve More, Live Better and their latest, The Power Code: More Joy, Less Ego, Maximum Impact for Women (and Everyone), which came out this summer. (They've also written two books geared towards a younger audience, The Confidence Code for Girls and Living the Confidence Code.) It'll be impossible for you to not leave feeling empowered. As a father of two wonderful girls, I have always asked - Why aren't more women in power? Only 10 percent of CEOs at Fortune 500 companies are women, and only 27 of the 193 countries in the world are led by women. I believe that if more women were in power, there would be less conquest and a dramatic shift in spending from the military to what matters - healthcare, humanity, education, fiscal responsibility and the health of our planet. My guest this week is Claire Shipman, a world-renowned Emmy, DuPont and Peabody Award Winning Journalist and co-author of several New York Times bestsellers Katty Kay. Their latest is titled The Power Code. More Joy. Less Ego. Maximum Impact for Women (and Everyone). Claire shares behind-the-scenes stories from her illustrious career, and then we dive deep into her new book and her ground-breaking insights on gender equality and power in the modern world. You will learn that that power, as it stands today, is inherently flawed. It's not about breaking glass ceilings or climbing corporate ladders; it's about redefining, remaking, and modernizing the very essence of power. In doing so, we depart from the traditional understanding of power, defined by the men who wield it as a hierarchical force and infers control over and competition with other people, to a new code where power becomes a tool to focus and collaborate and to improve the current conditions of our world dramatically. Erica Nielsen, the EVP of Personal Banking and Investments at RBCjoins the show. We discuss Claire's work, and then Erica shares some personal stories of finding her voice and what RBC is doing to close the gender gap and create a more inclusive culture. 00:00:00 Tony shares why this episode on power and gender disparity matters. 00:05:54 Claire talks about her early life. 00:07:07 Struggle with people pleasing, finding own voice. 00:12:21 Women's work and leadership, confidence gap and risk-taking. 00:17:04 Confidence code flows, power code complicated. 00:18:35 Massive shift underway; need more women in power. 00:21:47 Surface power men, women's power behind the scenes. 00:26:43 Valuing essential work, resistance to change. 00:28:30 Men must value time and share responsibilities. 00:34:06 Redefining work for broader values, gender equality. 00:36:32 Writing books is humbling and stressful. 00:40:16 Tony's three takeaways. 00:43:12 Erica: Societal norms impact behavior in organizations. 00:46:10 Erica: Unconscious bias in coaching and mentoring explained.
Motherhood can come with a lot of changes—identity loss, the invisible load, career impact, and relationship struggles. Moms often find themselves feeling powerless, in their lives, in their careers, and in their homes. But if we can change the dynamics in and out of the home, we can embrace power as moms and make real shifts on an individual and societal level. Today I'm joined by NYT bestselling author Claire Shipman to talk about her new book, The Power Code, and how the concept of power applies to moms. Women have always had power. Every day, we successfully juggle our careers, social lives and families, and increasingly women are the breadwinners in our relationships. We also have to acknowledge that the definition of the word “power” can be vastly different when we compare the sexes — what does a woman in power want and need, vs. a man in power? Katty Kay and Claire Shipman, authors of the new book The Power Code: More Joy. Less Ego. Maximum Impact for Women (and Everyone), argue that the word “power” needs to be completely redefined for a new generation. Listen in to hear more about how we can all wield more power in our own lives — including their best advice for feeling like a boss when walking into an interview or a big presentation. “The women who get to the top of the existing power structures have the ability to make the most change.”Today's episode is all about women and power. We explore the question, “How do we move away from the old notion of what constitutes power and redefine it to meet the needs of the future?” That question leads to a deeper discussion about how women leaders can embody and model this new type of power.I was introduced to my guests, Katty Kay and Claire Shipman, when I read their book, “The Confidence Code”. I recommend that book to almost every woman leader I work with, as it offers meaningful research and insights about the cultivation of confidence in women. I have the pleasure to talk to these veteran journalists, authors, and all-around powerhouse women about the research and conclusions about women and power in their new book, “The Power Code”, which launches today. In this episode:Why Katty and Claire decided to explore the concept of powerWhy are we, as women, so afraid of the word power?Redefining power structures as womenKay's and Shipman's advice for women leadersHow we can use power differentlyPower Presence Academy: Practical Wisdom for Leaders is the go-to podcast for anyone who leads. How is your confidence? Do you need a little more ease in your body when you face an important challenge? Please listen to episodes 17 & 18 to learn more about the foundations for this practice. Then learn about how the sympathetic and parasympathetic sides of our nervous system regulate our bodies. We will practice some shoulder releases and some side body releases to help relax us and to get a full and complete breath. In this episode I cover why confidence is important, including some recommendations from a great book on this topic, The Confidence Code: The Science and Art of Self-Assurance - What Women Should Know by Katty Kay and Claire Shipman. I come back to a practice I covered in Episode 3 of this podcast, breath awareness. This moves us from our over-thinking brain back into our body. Then I walk us through a seated twist position that serves as a Vagal Nerve stimulation and do three repeats on each side. We come back to the breath awareness to check in again to sense if there are any changes. This short practice can be done 1-3 repetitions on each side before we are going to do something where we need more confidence, and some calming for the nervous system. Even for a moment? Our wild self is the part of us that does the unexpected - acts goofy, initiates a harmless joke, breaks a rule, leaves routine to go "Walkabout," or submerges spontaneously in a wild river or a beautiful rain. Erin and Mary celebrate the breakout moments that refresh us and encourage us to shake things up a bit from time to time. Surviving our own weird moments well is confidence-building; we also explore the behaviors that build confidence with highlights from the book The Confidence Code, by Katty Kay and Claire Shipman. #032 - Join Jennie for the “take messy action” episode, where she discusses adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism. Turns out one of these is good– surprise! Jennie also digs into the fact that comparison is the thief of joy–and comparison goes hand-in-hand with being a perfectionist. The fact is, perfectionist tendencies cause you to either limit your potential or live as a shadow artist, and we'll dive into where this behavior comes from and why it's more prevalent among women. My article about curiosity: Exercising to Make Life More *Titillating*The Confidence Code, by Katty Kay & Claire Shipman. Have you noticed a confidence dip in your tween or teen girl? You aren't dreaming...it's a real thing. Today's article, "https://nadiagirl.com/blogs/nadiagirl-blog/5-steps-to-helping-our-daughters-grow-up-with-more-confidence (5 Steps to Helping Our Daughters Grow Up With More Confidence)," comes from Briana Beazley. Briana is founder of NadiaGirl, a tween girls clothing brand focused on empowering young girls by creating comfortable clothing that fits well, to help them feel more confident. When Briana's daughter was entering her tween years, shopping for her was discouraging and frustrating. There were limited options, and the clothes were not age-appropriate, didn't fit well, or were poor quality. She saw how this impacted her daughter's confidence and decided to do something about it. Soon after that, Nadia Girl was born, and Briana began writing about issues affecting tween girls. In this episode, you'll learn ways you can help boost your daughter's confidence, such as normalizing failure, encouraging risk taking, and more. One of the more perplexing things I have encountered in my career as a therapist turned coach is how often I see bold, brilliant, badass women doubting themselves, settling for less than they really want, and holding themselves back from the level of success they truly deserve. As you will hear in today's episode, the research all points to the same conclusion. In order to become more confident, women need to stop thinking so much and just act. We need to commit to doing work that is good enough, instead of striving for perfection. We must learn to act before we think we are ready. And, because moving away from comfort and toward fear is counterintuitive, we would do well to surround ourselves with other women who are committed to doing the same. Confidence is not just feeling good about yourself, and it is not a reward for good work, but a skill and a choice. Confidence is a belief in one's ability to succeed, a belief that stimulates action. Taking action increases our belief that we can succeed and confidence accumulates. This is the essence of The Confidence Habit. So, do you feel like an imposter? Maybe you feel like a fraud at at work. What about devaluing your worth, aka charging less than pays the bills or acting like your accomplishments don't matter? Well, you might be suffering from imposter syndrome. This episode we explore the term coined in 1978 by two American psychologists, Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes. Turns out the more successful you are, you might be feeling even more like you don't “deserve” it. We unpack how major multi-hyphenates like Michelle Obama and Maya Angelou suffered from this insidious mindset. Plus, we talk about financial imposter syndrome — perhaps, you're just anticipating the rug being pulled out from under you? — and offer tips for how to shake the anxiety once and for all.
