Bhakshak, starring Bhumi Pednekar, is the latest socially conscious call-to-action from Shah Rukh Khan's production company, and even though it's a more grounded film, its sensibilities aren't too dissimilar from Jawan. We discuss what we liked and disliked about the film's portrayal of hyperlocal journalism, its depiction of real-life atrocities, and its tendency to shed all nuance and scream at the audience. We also talk about the film's odd pacing, the often confusing narrative, and overall inelegance despite director Pulkit's noble intentions. — Hosted by Akhil Arora and Rohan Naahar, The Long Take is fully bootstrapped. We recently saw a movie that completely baffled us. A film, that, without pointing fingers, talks about a menace that we all are dealing with. One rumour, one 'afwaah' that can change your life. It is caste and religion agnostic and can even harm the people who spread it. In our studio today we have writer and satirist Sanjay Rajoura, along with Somya Lakhani, Senior Editor at The Quint, and we will be talking about Sudhir Mishra's latest offering 'Afwaah', starring Sumeet Vyas, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Bhumi Pednekar in lead roles. We also talk about the problem of fake news, and self-censorship, and how the film exposes the hypocrisy of 'liberal elites' through a powerful climactic twist. Towards the end, Sanjay urges all young people to call out bigotry in their families to achieve true 'vaichaarik azaadi'.

Afwaah (starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Bhumi Pednekar and Sumeet Vyas), similar to Anubhav's recent Bheed or Hansal Mehta's Faraaz, is a part of Bollywood's dissenting cinema. While it is crucial to have such films, they often assume a morally superior stance, neglecting the importance of narrating a captivating story, which can itself drive change. As always, Sinha takes up real life news incidents and fictionalises them to showcase the depth of the issue surrounding his movie. In this case, he does justice to the horrific reality of workers who were trying to migrate during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Although, I have some reservations about a few artistic decisions, overall, Bheed is definitely a must watch. Tune in for the full review.

Writer Sudip Sharma (NH10, Udta Punjab, Paatal Lok, Laal Kaptaan) joins us for a Sonchiriya deep dive. Sonchiriya is one of my favorite films of last 10 years.  It's also my favorite Sushant Singh Rajput film. I believe his performance, much like the film, remains underrated and under-discovered. This episode is, in part, an attempt to help people discover and appreciate Sonchiriya. Sudip and I talked about key scenes and moments, conducting script research in Bundelkhand, casting Sushant and Bhumi, working with Sushant, the set pieces, and film influences on Sonchiriya. Sudip also shared how Sonchiriya is his tribute to Shekhar Kapur's Bandit Queen (1994), one of his all-time favorite Hindi films. From colourism, to fat shaming and how minority communities are represented - this episode explores prejudices portrayed in Bollywood and questions whether things are changing. Are characters like Bhumi Pednekar in Dum Laga Ke Haisha progressive or should they have used a 'bigger' actress rather than making her gain weight for the role? Is Vidya Balan the only actress flying the flag for women with 'real' bodies? Are Punjabis always portrayed as loud and drunk and Muslims depicted as terrorists? And is fair still considered more beautiful in songs and storylines? From Priyanka Chopra-Jonas' rock-bottom moment in the film Fashion to Hrithik Roshan blacking up in Super 30 - is colourism an issue in Bollywood? Haroon Rashid chats to student Jasmine Rai who based her dissertation on minority representation in films, Tik-Tokker Shabaz Ali and former film/TV critic, Imaan Zia
