If “caught in the middle” was a tightrope, Savala Nolan would be a well-seasoned expert at walking it. The lawyer, speaker, and author has learned to navigate the tedious limbo that is being mixed-race, changing economic status, and a fluctuating body painfully affected by diet culture. In her debut book, Don't Let It Get You Down: Essays on Race, Gender, and the Body, Nolan shares nostalgic, sometimes painful anecdotes from her life that illustrate the resilience and lessons learned from a life lived not in black nor white but in that somewhere in-between. Twelve poignant reflections unravel how injustice lurks around every corner and has done so for generations. But, with such wrong-doing, so too grows defiance, justice, and people like Savala Nolan who relentlessly resist by living with authenticity. Now in her fifth year at the Henderson Center for Social Justice, Nolan holds the title of executive director. She teaches law students and activists about the paramount topics of implicit bias and systemic racism—guiding the minds of tomorrow on how to mend the cracks in our system. In today's episode we're talking all things motherhood, forgiveness and healing. We're talking about spiritual parenting - from planning the astrological sign of your child (or attempting to!), to mystical approaches to learning including a conversation about Waldorf education. We're also discussing the eating disorder recovery process - something that my guest and I have both experienced. My guest is Prim Ormanovich a mother, author, and Waldorf teacher. She recently published her first book of poetry, "knotted" which captures her journey through a chaotic childhood, eating disorder recovery, sexual abuse, motherhood, forgiveness and healing. Prim is a long time blogger and podcaster, who started out writing about eating disorder recovery and intuitive eating as a way to advocate for people through a “Health At Every Size” lens. She currently runs a motherhood podcast with our good friend (and previous guest!) Karsyn DuPree, where they discuss all things woo woo parenting. Prim is currently undergoing Coach Training with Lightyear Leadership to further develop herself as a spiritual leader and to help people hone the power of their language, and attention, to set goals and a vision for their life. Get Prim's book “knotted”, listen to her podcast here and follow her via instagram at @primormanovich. In this episode, I talk about progression in my health journey from focusing on restriction and body shrinking to learning about intuitive eating, diet culture and the Health at Every Size (HAES) movement. I am at the beginning of exploring this new journey and share some of the resources that I am using to learn more, like the Food Psych Podcast with Christy Harrison and the Intuitive Eating Workbook by Tibole and Resch. Pendulum by S.E. German is available on FriesenPress, Amazon.com and Amazon.ca. The novel follows a young boy as he changes overnight from happy and silly to angry and anxious. We learn that he has developed a neuroimmune disorder called PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal Infection). We hear the boy's perspective through his diagnosis, treatment and throughout regular middle-grade experiences. Dismantling Diet Culture and Oppressive Systems with Christy Harrison, author of Anti Diet and host of Food Psych Podcast. In this episode, Christy shares the unexpected ways her book Anti Diet (Published 2019) have become relevant, how diet culture stops us from participating in life and in revolutions, why and how we can move away from the binary and binary thinking, the importance of understanding how we orient in the world, the inner process of doing the work, using our Interoceptive Awareness as our guide when doing anti-oppression work, what we need to think about before extending anti-diet messaging to other areas of oppression and a lesson in Cultural Appropriation (sign up to the full course by Monique Melton here!) More about what Fi and Christy speak about: How Christy was one of Fi’s very first guests on The Mindful Dietitian Podcast and how she is someone she looks too and learns from consistently in this space. What Christy has been up to; focussing on social justice angles and roots of diet culture and getting her book deal and writing and publishing Anti-Diet. COVID-19 and the current anti-racism movement in America; how unexpected aspects of the Anti-Diet book have become relevant. The definition of diet culture and how diet culture takes us away from our purpose and disconnects us from what is going on in the larger world. Moving away from the binary and binary thinking and dismantling systems of oppression and injustice through looking for the third option. How we orient in the world, towards ourselves and towards others and how this can translate across different communities. The inner process of doing the work; learning, dismantling, wrestling and letting go and what we need to consider and remind ourselves whilst doing the unseen work. Using interoceptive awareness as a guide in anti-diet, anti-racism and anti-oppression work. For people who are already involved and practising anti-diet messaging, the work that needs to be done before thinking about and extending these messages out to other areas of oppression. A lesson on Cultural Appropriation (part of Monique Melton’s course, find more information here) and why white folks MUST work on appreciation without appropriation. NOTE from Masha: As these episode are being released, the world is dealing with the coronavirus crisis. Because all episodes in the season were recorded well in advance, this is not discussed on the show. I hope that you will apply the same themes that we discuss throughout the Bold Adulting podcast to coping and supporting both yourself and others in your community (including the global community) -- reaching out to people (virtually) figuring out what you want to make progress on and making a plan being open about what you're going through with the people who you feel comfortable sharing with looking for evidence-based resources remembering that you are not alone If you want to connect with me to discuss what you're going through (about this or anything else), please feel free to email me or find me on Facebook (send me a message letting me know you found me through the podcast). I also strongly suggest connecting with other caring and compassionate people through the Facebook group Distance Resistance (which I don't run but I participate in) which is about staying connected even while we have to stay apart. You can also find a lot of information there about getting help or giving help -- this is a is moment to come together. --------------------------------------- [content warning: eating disorders & body shame] In episode 2 of a two-part episode, Voice Actor and Coach, Podcaster, and Marketing Specialist Tawny Platis discusses fighting bi invisibility by coming out in the context of being in an other-gender relationship, setting boundaries with family members for self-care, and finding help for recovering from eating disorders and body dysmorphia. tl;dr Christy Harrison of Food Psych is here to talk about pleasure, happiness, weight stigma, what it means to be anti-diet, and why trusting our hungers around food & sex is so important. Part 2 of 2! I am so excited to share Part 2 of this 2 part conversation with the incredible Christy Harrison! If you haven't heard Part 1, hop over and give that a listen before diving into this episode. Christy is an anti-diet dietitian, host of the Food Psych Podcast, and she just published a book that we are exploring here called, "Anti-Diet: Reclaim Your Time, Money, Well-Being, and Happiness Through Intuitive Eating". Before we get into my chat with Christy, I wanted to share a post on Tumblr by Inkdot about clothing that I wish more of us knew. The dressing room can be a fraught place for many of us - clothes never seem to fit just right, or the arbitrary sizes bring up shame. Head to dawnserra.com/ep297 for a link to this piece about celebrities and clothes might bring some relief to those of us who struggle with finding clothing that fits our bodies. Be Nourished's free online Body Trust Summit is March 11-17 and it is going to be fantastic. If you like my conversation with Christy this week, the summit is 24 talks that will take you even deeper into your relationship with food, body, pleasure, and healing. Register now! Finally, Patrons who support at $3 and above, this week are going to explore our body stories and I'm going to share a few more awesome bits from Christy's book for us all to be in together. Hear it at patreon.com/sgrpodcast. So back to my chat with Christy: This week on Part 2 of my conversation with Christy Harrison we continue our exploration of many of the lies we've been sold, desirability politics and changing bodies, and why the problem is NOT weight but rather weight stigma and a focus on dieting. All of this ties so so intimately to the ways we experience sex, the ways we navigate consent, how we set boundaries, and do relationship. Be sure to send in your questions! Before we get into my chat with Christy, I have a few important things: First, at Alex's suggestion, I turned my answer from last week's episode about preferences for certain bodies into a blog post... that has as of six days later been read over 31,000 times. HOLY SHIT! There has been so much beautiful input, additional nuance, and depth in all of the things people are saying, and I am so grateful. If you like it, feel free to share it! Let's keep the conversation going. Second, Be Nourished's free online Body Trust Summit is March 11-17 and it is going to be fantastic. Finally, Patrons who support at $3 and above, don't miss my bonus chat with Christy at patreon.com/sgrpodcast. Christy and I talk about my own disordered eating and orthorexia, the part of her book that made me burst into tears, the cost of the performances we do around food and also sex, and where the advent of the “obesity” epidemic came from and why it’s actually really new. Hint: it has to do with money in people’s pockets NOT science. So back to my chat with Christy: I expect a lot of you are going to have some big feels come up as you hear Christy and I talk about diet culture, weight stigma, and how dieting and disordered relationships with our hungers impacts our sexual desire and pleasure. This is a really nuanced conversation, so if you notice yourself constricting or feeling defensive, feel free to take a break, breathe, move, and then return to it later. Seven or eight years ago me would have felt really resistant to a conversation like this, so I get it. Part 2, which drops next week, continues our exploration of many of the lies we've been sold, desirability politics and changing bodies, and why the problem is NOT weight but rather weight stigma and a focus on dieting. All of this ties so so intimately to the ways we experience sex, the ways we navigate consent, how we set boundaries, and do relationship, so I hope you'll join me for this delicious 2-part conversation with Christy. Are you getting the support you need to move away from chronic dieting and disordered eating? In this latest episode, I'm talking about support. I could not have found the peace I now have with food and my body without support. I found support from an amazing therapist, the Food Psych Podcast with Christy Harrison (among other podcasts), the Intuitive Eating book and workbook by Elyse Resch and Evelyn Tribole, and support from my family who wanted me to heal. Having one-on-one support from a professional with intuitive eating expertise can be eye-opening. I realize this type of support isn't available to everyone. There are online group courses where you will pay less than having personal, one-on-one coaching. Then there are so many FREE resources out there including books, podcasts, blogs, and both in-person and online support groups. In this episode, I talk about all of the ways we need support. I also announce the launch of my NEW Facebook group, Intuitive Eating & Body Compassion Community! I'm so excited to make this group available as a free resource to anyone looking for guidance on ditching diets and embracing intuitiveness with food, body, and mind. Please feel free to come on over and check out my new Facebook community!!! ---------------------------- If you are enjoying my podcast, please go to iTunes and leave a 5-star rating and review!! Send me a DM on Instagram or Facebook (@AlisonBarkmanRD) with your comments or a question you'd like answered on the show! -------------------------------------- Need help healing your relationship with food AND exercise? I am currently booking clients for my 1-on-1 online intuitive eating program! You can schedule a FREE 20-minute call with me to tell me more about where you're at in your intuitive eating journey and ask any questions about how we can work together!
On episode 3 of our month of Physical Health we welcome my good friend Anna Clausen Williams to the show! Anna is a local health professional in the Seattle Area, focused on strength training at any size and helps her clients build strength and confidence in their bodies while building healthy relationships with food and exercise. On Today's show we talk about how her acting career lead to a bad relationship with her body image, how fitness helped her find her strength and confidence, and how she's leveraged her experiences to help others normalize their experiences with their bodies. "I help people use fitness to claim their strength, inside and out" - Anna Anna has a wonderful monthly newsletter, if you'd like to see more of her go to www.AnnaClausenWellness.com to sign up! Resources Anna talked about: Food Psych Podcast with Christy Harrison (in the show she quoted her book "Anti Diet" but the podcast is Food Psych") Correction: "70% of our long term health outcomes (not weight expression) are things not directly in our control including DNA"
In session one of Nora’s confidence coaching session series, she gets help with fixating on body image and focusing on learning instead of perfectionism. Stay tuned for parts 2 and 3! See Nora’s Instagram: Makeup by Nora Lu Mentioned in this episode: Food Psych Podcast - about intuitive eating and Health At Every Size Tip: destroy or throw out scale Homework: Every day, note 1-3 thing you are grateful for yourself Tip: Don’t just focus on aesthetics; think about everything your body is doing for you! Orthorexia: fixation with “healthy” eating Note: “healthy” is in quotation marks both because orthorexia shows how this focus can actually be unhealthy AND because the typical distinction between “healthy food” and “unhealthy food” is not evidence-based (see Food Psych episodes 168 and 183). Homework: Track unhelpful (e.g. self-critical) thoughts by moving pennies from one pocket to another or by using a tally Homework: To cultivate your growth mindset, make 2 lists: List #1: Subjects or skills that you’ve learned List #2: Subjects or skills that you want to learn Then circle one or two items from list #2 and figure out how you can start learning. Homework: Reach out to people in careers you’re interested in to request to job shadow them or an informational interview Download the free 7 Step Guide For Confidently Reaching Out to Anyone Note: Informational interviews can be more helpful and less time intensive for everyone involved. Job shadowing isn’t always possible (e.g. for safety or security reasons) and for many jobs would involve sitting and watching someone work at a computer all day. It may still be useful if a) the person explains what they are doing well and b) to understand the structure of how they work. If working at a computer all day sounds terrible to you, it’ll be more clear to you by watching this work than by hearing a summary of the work. Confidence Cat Zine: coloring worksheets for confidence, problem-solving, and career decision-making Calendly or other scheduling tools to make setting up meetings easy on everyone Tip: Instead of referring to your questions as “stupid questions,” try “basic question.” After all, not knowing something that you have little or no experience with is not a reflection of poor intelligence! And asking questions to fill in your knowledge gaps is a very smart move. As more people become aware of words like “body positivity” and “anti-diet” it opens the door for confusion — what does it actually mean and is it really good for health? What makes something a “diet? Christy Harrison’s book Anti-Diet lays out the historical context of dieting and weight stigma, seeking to explain why not dieting at all is actually better for your health. We discuss why healthcare providers must examine how we oppress people operating in a weight normative model of care and how we can create a better, healthier world when we commit to anti-oppression. Amy is someone who has experienced many levels of highs, lows, successes, and defeats. Through all of this she learned to see her bravery and use that to help her find her peace and her joy. She shares her process initiated by NIA, and expanded through intuitive energy healing, reiki and her own form of personal coaching, and she uses this process to help other women step into their new beginnings. Happy Holidays Folks! We taped this show just for you!!! We hope you're all having a good holiday. Are you doing ok? Do you need to listen to the Food Psych Podcast because you're having some food issues coming up around the holidays? Need some Buddhism wisdom from the Ram Dass Podcast? We know that the holidays can be a challenging time. Theresa and Shana share some stories about the concept of 'freedom' and the freedom you get from really experiencing the challenges of life, and how it can help you become a better you. Even though there's privilege to 'how' we experience these challenges, we can all play with looking at challenges from a different perspective. Our first guest today is Belinda Downey, Aussie transplant, mom and screenwriter. Bel is a good friend of Theresa's who's been an inspiration to her as someone who manages to hold down a full time job, a baby and a commitment to her creative writing. Bel talks about how she got to the US, how finding a writing community was a motivating factor in getting here and how she balances work, toddler and staying connected to her writing amidst her many responsibilities. She shares about the differences between living in Australian and the US, ah hem...healthcare. Bel's been working on several screenwriting projects and ponders why so many of her main characters have historically been male and how when she finally wrote in female leads, the feedback she received was that they were not likeable. Misogyny or honest feedback. Tell us what you think! Our second guest today is Tracey Helton, recovery activist and author of the book The Big Fix: Hope After Heroin. She is known as the 'heroine of heroin" and has been interviewed in too many publications to list here. They've been running stories about her passion for getting Narcan/ Naloxone into the hands of the public. She's saved over 300 lives worldwide just by mailing out the opiate reversing drug (which is 100% legal) but nearly impossible for most people to get, some states have it but most do not. She is a firm believer in harm reduction methods to help addicts get through life in the hopes that they will someday be able to get clean. Shana has been bringing Tracey's book into her weekly 12 step rehab meetings as an aid to the many heroin addicts desperate for recovery. What an honor to finally interview her years later and hear even more stories of HOPE and also find out how this mother of 3 is able to keep working so hard on the front lines of the opioid epidemic. Have you ever felt like your body has betrayed you? Bad things happen to good people all the time. Yet when we go through something painful, we often lack the self-compassion and optimism it takes to find our way out of our suffering. What makes some people more resilient than others? Their mindset -- believing they will get through the adversity and in some cases, believing the difficulty changes them for good. Resilience is a process we can all learn. The power of stories experiences. That’s why I created this Body Betrayal series. I’m bringing you the stories of people who have gone through difficulties with their bodies and found their way to a better well-being through self-compassion and acceptance. Each show will contain a letter from the guest to their body and then through our conversation we will unpack the guest’s unique experiences and insights. First up is a colleague and friend of mine. Today I'm so excited to introduce you to Christy Harrison, non-diet dietitian and host of the Food Psych podcast. There's so much in this episode, it's kinda tough to summarise it, but here are some highlights: we discuss the biology of why diets don't work, and, how when you really dig into the literature, it's not an evidence based practice. This raises an interesting question around the ethics of recommending weight loss diets. We also talk about why it's not intuitive eating if you're counting macros or calories and how those things may be keeping you in disordered eating. Christy shares so much insight and wisdom into the intuitive eating process, as well as her own experiences with recovering from an eating disorder. Finally we talk about how to be responsible when sharing messages of body positivity from a place of thin privilege. Buckle in kids, this is a great episode filled with so much great information; I have a feeling you're going to love Christy. This episode is sponsored by Symprove probiotics. HEY OH! I can’t wait to introduce you to this week’s guest, because she’s someone I’ve followed for years, she’s one of the people who originally got me interested in intuitive eating, health at every size and non diet approaches to health and nutrition. Kelsey Miller is senior features writer for Refinery 29 in New York where she writes the column the Anti Diet Project which is all about intuitive eating, body image, and sane fitness. She’s also the author of 'Big Girl:How I Gave up Dieting and Got a Life'. And today we talk a little about her intuitive eating journey and how it’s really hard so don’t buy into the BS on Instagram where bloggers are like, I used to eat clean but now I eat intuitively without any concept of what it actually means (or any carbs on their plate. We also talk about how to be an advocate for body positivity from a place of thin privilege, we talk about recognising other types of privilege in the body positivity space and how unless you’re talking about intersectionality, then you’re kinda part of the problem. And she also gives a lot of great advice about how to get more comfortable with your body and spoiler; it involves getting out of your comfort zone. Really love this conversation. Real talk: I've both under and over-fueled for a few of my marathons. Then I met Intuitive Eating. It took me a whopping seven marathons to figure out how to properly and adequately fuel myself, according to both my needs and preferences. I want to tell you about why that matters, what I've learned, and how I'm bringing that information to you now (with Kelly Jones, RD CSSD). I hope this is the first of many 1:1 chats we have, even though I know you can't reply in real time. But you can leave me a topic request on heathercaplan.com/rd-real-talk-podcast/ , or email me anytime: RDRealTalk at gmail dot com! Episode's Key Points: Around age five or six, all children go through "Adiposity Rebound." This usually means that developmentally, children will gain weight to prepare for growth in the next few years. Our bodies as kids change so drastically all the time! We live in a fat phobic society!! It's a disgusting reality, but we live in a culture that is not accepting of larger bodies. If an adolescent in your life comes to you and says they want to lose weight, go on a diet, or start an exercise regimen, DO NOT offer to go on it with them! This sends the message that their body needs fixing. Instead, let them know that you will love them no matter what, unconditionally. Every BINGE starts with RESTRICTION!! There are so many people who understand this struggle, feel shame around their eating behaviors, and experience the tug of war of bingeing and restricting. Stop the food fight and take a rest! Dieting and restriction are the SAME THINGS!! The more we restrict and the more we sit in shame, the more we binge. There is a function of binge eating disorder! Bingeing can help us to disconnect from discomfort. Recovery from binge eating disorder takes, on average, six to seven years. Do so with the help of an eating disorder dietitian and a whole team of experts! Eating disorders are complicated because they include elements of mental health along with cultural issues of size acceptance. We live in a world that hasn't recovered from its own eating disorder yet!! Counseling and therapy are KEY elements to recovery! Work with a counselor and a dietitian together to help you along your journey and speed up your recovery process. You're worth recovery!! Shame is a HUGE weight on our shoulders... remove it with the help of professionals! You CAN find balance and food peace!! Show Notes: Link to subscribe to the weekly FREE Food Peace Newsletter. Please leave us a review at http://openskyfitness.com/review "Research shows that 65% of American women have disordered eating of some kind and an additional 10% have full blown eating disorders whether or not they've been diagnosed or treated. So 75% of American women are thought to have some issue with food that is disordered." - Christy Harrison of the Food Psych Podcast on why we need to make peace with food and your body Check Out Our Batch Cooking Show! It's a great way to prepare for the week ahead of you by making nutritious, delicious meals in advance. Batch cooking allows you to cook multiple meals at once that you can have over the course of 3-4 days! Make Peace With Food & Your Body "It's okay that it's not working for you. It's okay that it's taking you a lot of tries to get to this because nobody gets it out of the gate. Nobody does." - Rob Dionne on why it's okay that it takes you awhile to get healthy again or to find the right nutrition for your body. There's a lot of social pressure that makes us feel like we have to look a certain way or a be a certain size to be accepted and look good to others. Fortunately, there are people like Christy Harrison of the Food Psych Podcast who are saying that "No, health is not a size." and they're teaching us how we can love our bodies and make peace with food. Like Christy, it can be a long, difficult journey to accepting yourself and healing your relationship with food, but you should never give up. There's always time and amazing sources out there to help you on your health and wellness journey. Intuitive Eating vs Traditional "Diets" "Diets don't take into account how hungry you are, how energized you are between meals, what foods do you crave? If you demonize or restrict a certain type of food, that becomes all you ever want to eat." - Christy Harrison As we talked about on the last podcast, Should I Count Calories?, low-calorie diets have a 95% fail rate! A lot of these trendy diets are driven by fear and they tell you to go cold turkey and cut out certain foods such as gluten, carbs, sugar. But it's impossible to live on such a restricted diet. "The science behind restrictive diets doesn't hold up over time. What does hold up is variety, moderation, and balance." - Christy Harrison Unlike traditional, harsh diets, intuitive eating focuses on thinking about eating a balanced meal and choose types of food to eat that make you feel good about yourself. By following such a restricted diet of no carbs or breads, Christy found herself experiencing a cycle of binge eating those foods, body shaming herself, and then working out in excessive amounts to try to make up for it. If you're thinking to yourself right now, that this is what you do and how your relationship with food is, don't be too hard on yourself. It's never too late to make peace with food and your body. It can be easy to become obsessed with counting calories, restricting what food we eat, or working out for such an amount of time that we become obsessed with it. Strategies to Make Peace with Food & Your Body "Intuitive nutrition helps you related to food and relate to your body again. It's really important to reconnect with your body so that you do it from a place of self-care rather than self-control and controlling your body." - Christy Harrison It can take years of therapy to become more self-caring towards food and our bodies. We need to be more compassionate and kind towards ourselves. Christy's advice is that you should think about treating ourselves like we would treat a friend. For example, if you want a snack, allow yourself to have that healthy snack rather than restricting yourself. Don't limit yourself from waiting for a certain amount of time to eat that snack or avoid eating it at all. Self-care is understanding when your body is hungry for nutrition and providing it with healthy foods. How to Set Yourself Up for Intuitive Eating To make peach with your food & body, Christy suggests two main steps: Reject the diet mentality Honor your hunger When you reject the diet mentality, you're not limiting yourself of food nor are you relying on the next diet to make your magic pill. Once again, these trendy diets only have a 5% success rate and they're not created to fit every person's nutrition needs. You can honor your hunger by ensuring that you're trying to provide your body with nutrition whenever it's hungry. It's very normal to start to feel hungry again within 3-4 hours of eating a meal because our blood sugar is low. Having a healthy snack will keep your stomach satisfied, your head clear, and your body in motion. Understand Your Body & Make Peace Today Christy provides a quiz on her website to help you assess your relationship with food. It's not a formal diagnosis, but it can help you to better understand your relationship with food and if you should seek health to help you get healthy again. Christy also has a closed Facebook group, Food Psych Podcast Listener Crew. It's a great place to be with people who feel the same way that you do about health, nutrition, and positive body image. Today I'm speaking with McKenzie Zanjonc. McKenzie has a Masters in Nutrition and a Counseling Degree in Health Psychology and helps trade in their food and body struggle for a more meaningful life through her practice, Inner Nutritionist. You can find more about McKenzie at www.innernutritionist.com. In this episode McKenzie talks about how to tap into our “Inner Dieter” and our “Inner Nutritionist” to begin to heal our relationship with food. Here's a quick summary of the distinction between the two, but definitely give the episode a listen for the full scoop. The Inner Dieter is full for “shoulds” and “shouldn'ts”, is constantly judging food as good or bad, and is always in “fight or flight” mode. The Inner Dieter is full of unrealistic goals (which can especially creep up around New Years!). The Inner Dieter is sneaky. It can also show up as a Diet Rebel. The voice that is telling you to “have a cheat day” or “go off the wagon.” In those moments you might feel like you are not listening to your Inner Dieter, but in fact, you are. The best way to distinguish your Inner Nutritionist from your Inner Dieter is that in Inner Nutritionist is in the NOW. It is not rolling up past dieting experiences or planning the future. It requires a pause, a checking in. It requires curiosity: What's my hunger? What's my fullness? Do I want hot food? Cold food? Something resh? The Inner Nutritionist is your ally and it's main concern is that you are able to nourish yourself in the present moment. McKenzie believes the first step to tapping into your Inner Nutritionist is simply being aware of this. Give the full episode a listen to hear more about how to be more satisfied around food by releasing control and listening to your Inner Nutritionist. Do you think if you lost weight you'd finally be free? Are you stuck in a loop of binge--> notice weight gain--> diet--> binge--> repeat? Feel like you would be free from its hellish grip if you could just lose the weight?? Like the binges would cease to exist once the weight was lost?? Do you wonder why you have been trapped in this for decades?? Julie sees what's blocking your path. Listen now for insight. Subscribe and leave a review here in just seconds. Key Points: Content warning: specific weight discussion Healthy vs unhealthy versions of food = food dichotomy = black and white thinking = perfectionism that doesn't even exist. This is a disordered eating pattern and will keep you stuck in this loop. Practice giving yourself permission to eat these "unhealthy foods" although not easy. Can typically take a year for this to stick. Freedom will only happen by not place your worth and value in your weight and weight loss pursuit. Pursuing weight loss keeps us in the disordered eating loop. Keeps foods in that dichotomy. The pursuit of weight loss would enhance the binge/diet loop and enhance the black and white thinking. How do you move away from using weight as a measure of health and worth?? Find a counselor and dietitian who align with these values. When seduced by the fantasy of losing weight be aware that is happening and call it out as the mindfuck that it is. Expect sadness, grief, and anger. You don't need to fight yourself to find freedom. Rather you need to fight the culture. You need to fight body hate in order to find your own food peace. Show Notes: Link to subscribe to the weekly FREE Food Peace Newsletter. On today's episode of THE FOOD SEEN, Christy Harrison, a nutritionist specializing in eating disorders and obesity explores the intersections of food and psychology through her podcast Food Psych. Christy also holds a Master's degree in Public Health Nutrition, has worked at the NYC Department of Health, and been an editor and writer for the likes of Gourmet, Modernist Cuisine, and CHOW. Hear how eating disorders can affect anyone, and what nutritional tips may just help us to overcome them. This program has been sponsored by Bonnie Plants. p.s. Listen to host Michael Harlan Turkell on Food Psych, #28: Seen and Heard. “For healthy diets, you cannot have restriction, but rather- balance.” [8:45] “I knew so many women who grew up with mothers who were restricting. My mother was the kind of woman who was always trying to lose five pounds.” [25:15] — Christy Harrison on THE FOOD SEEN
