Send us a textWhat if ending violence against women isn't just about asking men to stop bad behavior, but inviting them to embrace a more meaningful definition of strength and leadership? This question forms the heart of our powerful conversation with Jackson Katz, Ph.D., one of the world's foremost male voices in the movement to prevent gender-based violence.Katz joins us to discuss his groundbreaking new book "Every Man: Why Violence Against Women is a Men's Issue"—the first book published by a major publisher addressing men's violence with men as a primary target audience. With decades of experience pioneering bystander intervention training and educating on these issues, Katz offers profound insights into why this particular moment demands men's full engagement with ending violence against women.Together, we explore how masculinity is "policed" through social mechanisms that keep thoughtful men silent. The modern lexicon of shame—terms like "simp," "cuck," and "beta male"—serves to isolate men who might otherwise speak out against misogyny or violence. Yet Katz argues persuasively that true strength isn't demonstrated through domination but through moral courage, resilience, and standing against injustice. We delve into how traditional mental health approaches often fail to address violence, how some of the most prominent voices speaking to men today actively undermine healthy masculinity, and why institutional accountability must accompany individual leadership. Particularly riveting is Katz's argument that prevention work must be framed as a leadership expectation, not merely an optional hope. This conversation doesn't shy away from uncomfortable truths—including how patriarchal systems harm men themselves through what Katz calls "the triad of men's violence": violence against women, violence against other men, and violence against themselves. Yet it ends with an affirming vision of how men and women, with their fundamentally similar emotional makeups, can find connection instead of conflict.Whether you're a survivor, a male ally, or someone seeking to understand these issues more deeply, this episode offers invaluable perspectives on creating a world where all people can live without violence or threat.Read more about Jackson's work here: https://www.jacksonkatz.com/ Now available! In this episode, we dive into a topic that's more relevant than ever this election season: masculinity. White men are mobilizing to support Kamala Harris and we unpack why.  Polls are showing a growing gender gap, this election season—with women favoring Harris, while men favor Trump—but is the polling accurate? If so, what can we learn from this? How have the election's gender politics changed, in the wake of Vice President Kamala Harris running for president? How does Trump continue to influence American masculinities years after leaving political office—and how will masculinity influence the outcome of the 2024 presidential election?Helping us to sort out these questions and set the record straight is our very special guest, Jackson Katz: Jackson Katz, Ph.D., is a regular Ms. contributor and creator of the 2020 documentary The Man Card: White Male Identity Politics from Nixon to Trump, which was just rereleased in a newly revised and updated version. Deborah Tuerkheimer served for five years as an Assistant District Attorney in the New York County District Attorney's Office, where she specialized in domestic violence and child abuse prosecution. In her new book Credible: Why We Doubt Accusers and Protect Abusers, she provides a much-needed framework to explain how we perceive credibility, why our perceptions are distorted, and why these distortions harm survivors. Social hierarchies and inequalities foster doubt that is commonplace and predictable, resulting in what Tuerkheimer calls the “credibility discount”—our dismissal of claims by certain kinds of speakers—primarily women, and especially those who are more marginalized. The #MeToo movement has exposed how victims have been badly served by a system that is designed not to protect them, but instead to protect the status quo. Credibility lies at the heart of this system. Drawing on case studies, moving first-hand accounts, science, and the law, Tuerkheimer identifies widespread patterns and their causes, analyzes the role of power, and examines the close, reciprocal relationship between culture and law—guiding us toward accurate credibility judgments and equitable treatment of those whose suffering has long been disregarded. #MeToo has touched off a massive reckoning. To achieve lasting progress, we must shift our approach to belief. Credible helps us forge a path forward to ensuring justice for the countless individuals affected by sexual misconduct. Praise for Credible “This is not just an important book. It's way more than that—it's a new algorithm, an upending of long-held beliefs kept in place by law and culture. If we rewire ourselves to respond more fairly to the accusations that come our way, law reform and culture change will follow. Over time we can dismantle the credibility complex." —Elizabeth Lesser, bestselling author of Cassandra Speaks and Broken Open “Deborah Tuerkheimer makes a brilliant, clear, and convincing legal case in Credible that justice for survivors requires basic changes in the law. But she makes an equally compelling plea for something with even more world-historical ambition: a transformation that is needed in the court of public opinion so that women's dignity—and credibility—is finally seen as equal to men's.” —Jackson Katz, PhD, educator and author of The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help “In Credible, Tuerkheimer tells a range of stories of victim-survivors of sexual assault and harassment. What's different is that she traverses these stories through the lens of credibility—the ways in which its absence (or in rare cases, its presence) will make all the difference in someone's recovery and healing. This is essential reading not only for those deeply invested in #MeToo activism and scholarship and for victim-survivors who will finally feel seen but also for anyone who has ever known a victim. Which is to say, Tuerkheimer's book is essential reading for everyone.” —Donna Freitas, author of Consent: A Memoir of Unwanted Attention --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message

Amy: Welcome to Breaking Down Patriarchy! I'm Amy McPhie Allebest. Today's book is called The Gender Knot: Unraveling Our Patriarchal Legacy, and it's the first text we've read that was written by a man since we read John Stuart Mill's The Subjection of Women several months ago! I have loved reading all of these books by women, but as I read this book it hit me how important it was that a man had written it, and here's why: One of the biggest lessons I've realized in my education on racism recently is that society often places the burden of changing racist structures onto people of color… when the responsibility should be on the people who uphold those structures. So racism is a problem for white people to solve. White people need to own it. Likewise, sexism - which exists in all cultures in various ways - is often treated as a “women's issue,” so as Jackson Katz says in his TED talk, men often tune out and don't pay attention. So I love that Dr. Allan G. Johnson, who was a sociologist and college professor - and a man - took on patriarchy as his life's work. And I was really gratified to see a lot of online reviews of his book written by men, who said this book helped them see things they had never considered before.  So I'm really excited to discuss this book today, and want to welcome my friend Kasey Cruz to our discussion. Hi, Kasey! Kasey: (Say hi - I'm so happy to be here! Or whatever comes to your mind) :) Amy: I met Kasey a few years ago - she became part of our family's little bubble of safe people during the Covid lockdown and she was our family's fitness coach when all the gyms were closed down. She is so incredibly energetic, cheerful, optimistic, and hard-working, and she's just a couple of years older than my oldest daughter so she became a dear friend as we spent hours together chatting between burpees and jump roping. :)  So one day while we were working out Kasey, you told us about your grandmother and about your great-grandmother, and we were so mesmerized that we stopped mid-exercise and wanted to know every detail. And that conversation led to me asking you to be on the podcast. So I wonder if you can tell us about yourself, and start with the story of your great-grandmother. Kasey:  My name is Kasey Cruz, I am the oldest of two children. Just me and my brother. My father's family is Guamanian and my mother's family is a mix of German and Cherokee and Palentin Indian. I was born and raised in Los Altos, California where I currently live. I recently graduated from Chico State University in the year 2020, sadly during the pandemic. I graduated with a Bachelor's in Kinesiology and a minor in Adapted Physical Activity. For anyone that doesn't know Kinesiology means, it is the study of the body and its movement. I had many life changing experiences during my time at Chico. I was involved in programs that helped individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities of all ages be involved in sports and exercise. Also, I interned at an elderly care facility for those with dementia and memory loss. There I led group exercise classes.  I also played soccer since I was four years old and ended up playing for about 2 years at the collegiate level. I've always had a passion for sports and exercise and loved the physical and mental challenges. At the university, I found a passion for helping others achieve their goals and challenge themselves through physical activity. Which leads me to what I am currently doing, I am a personal trainer, a strength and conditioning coach for athletes, and a group trainer at F45. Now a little bit about my great, great, great grandmother. As a little girl, we had this family tree project where we had to make a visual board of our family lineage on both sides. My mom was helping me with her side of the family and she told me that my grt grt grt grandmother was Cherokee and she was the chief's daughter. Her name was Starshine Chitwood and...

Jackson Katz is founder & president of MVP Strategies and an outspoken expert on why gender violence is a man's issue. Jackson grew up in a dysfunctional family and in college found himself studying the intersectionality of race, gender, and discrimination. Watching strong female classmates survive rape and campaign for campus safety, Jackson grew increasingly infuriated by the lack of engagement he saw from his male peers. In the decades since, Jackson has been a trusted male voice at the forefront of ending gender violence. Man up. Take it like a man. Boys will be boys. Boys don't cry. Don't be such a girl. These familiar phrases reinforce long-standing patriarchal tropes about what it means to be a man. Those ideas about masculinity are constantly being modeled back to us in our media and are introduced into our psyches at a very young age - a recent study found that in children's television the most prominent stereotype depicted about masculinity is of boys and men as violent or aggressors - continuing to normalize these problematic narratives. This episode, we are going to be talking with Dr. Jackson Katz about the concept of masculinity, how it's been defined to us, and how he believes it needs to change. Jackson is a thought leader in the growing movement of men working to promote gender equality and prevent gender violence. He is co-founder of Mentors in Violence Prevention, which focuses on gender violence prevention, and is the first major program of its kind to engage with sports culture and the military. In addition to his two books, Jackson has produced a slate of films examining culture, masculinity and violence, including the award-winning documentary, Tough Guise, and has also appeared in numerous popular documentaries, including Miss Representation and The Mask You Live In. Many of us, particularly those of us who grew up in conservative religious spaces, were taught unhealthy stories about what it meant to be a man. Some of them were generally toxic while some had added religious flavors. While many of us have rejected these teachings in our heads, we still struggle with internalized misogyny and toxic masculinity. This matters because, if we aren’t intentional and conscious about breaking those cycles, we may pass them onto our children.   Eric Eztli is on a mission to reimagine masculinity. He created the Instagram account Bloom Homie with a few friends several years ago. They focus on studying the patriarchal norms of this age and how they impact both men and women.  Eric is also a father who is thinking about all the ways he wants to guide his son in developing his own manhood. In this episode, we’re talking more about Bloom Homie as well as how Eric is helping society reimagine what it means to be a man in 2020.   Show Highlights: More about Eric and his work at Bloom Homie. How boys are taught to externalize pain. How we can all work together to have a healthier approach to pain in our lives. How Eric combats the toxic masculinity instincts from his childhood. His obstacles to forming friendships with other boys in childhood. What it’s been like for him to form intimate relationships with other men. Expanding the conversation around boundaries to all humans. Eric’s definition of healthy masculinity.   Links (affiliates included): Bloom Homie - https://www.instagram.com/bloomhomie/?hl=en Eric Eztli - https://www.instagram.com/ericeztli/?hl=en The Macho Paradox by Jackson Katz - https://amzn.to/3fZNpcZ Join us at the Parenting Forward Patreon Team - https://www.patreon.com/cindywangbrandt Parenting Forward, the Book - https://amzn.to/3g0LJPn *** EPISODE CREDITS: If you like this podcast and are thinking of creating your own, consider talking to my producer, Danny Ozment.

On The Issues With Michele Goodwin

On this special episode, we focus on toxic masculinity in the U.S., including online misogyny, and how it translates into real-world violence—highlighted most recently in the horrific murder of Daniel Anderl, the son of U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas, and the shooting of her husband Mark Anderl. The person assumed responsible for those tragedies is Roy Den Hollander, a self-proclaimed “men’s rights” activist—part of a growing movement of men who describe themselves as frustrated by women. Some members of this movement are also known as “incels.” We also turn to the everyday harassment women experience—even in Congress, like in the case of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), who was accosted by Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.). Representative Yoho called her “disgusting,” “a “f***ing bitch,” and at first denied it. Rep. Yoho claimed his “passion” got the better of him and offered what many would describe as a rambling floor speech in which his daughters and wife were centered. However, he did not apologize. For some women, this looked like typical workplace misogyny they endure all the time. What lessons can be drawn from these incidents and others? Has toxic masculinity gone too far? Joining me to talk about incels, the ways in which racism intersect with misogyny in the U.S. and on the internet and the antifeminist movement are three special guests. • Jill Filipovic is a columnist for CNN, a contributor to the New York Times, a lawyer and the author of the forthcoming "OK BOOMER, LET'S TALK: How My Generation Got Left Behind,” as well as "The H-Spot: The Feminist Pursuit of Happiness."• Saida Grundy, PhD., is an assistant professor of sociology and African American studies at Boston University. Her research explores the intersection of race with masculinity, rape culture and campus sexual assault. Professor Grundy is author of the forthcoming book "Manhood Within the Margins: Promise, Peril and Paradox at the Historically Black College for Men." • Jackson Katz, Ph.D., is an internationally acclaimed educator, author and scholar-activist on issues of gender, race and violence. Through his books, documentaries, public speaking and articles, Katz has tackled issues of masculinity, racism and violence. Support the show (http://msmagazine.com)

We're back with a bonus hiatus episode and we're talking about victim blaming, especially as it pertains to sexual assault. This is when a victim of an alleged assault is blamed, ranging from being asked what they were wearing, if they'd drunk alcohol, all the way to people not believing their story. Sometimes friends also don't know how to handle the situation so either engage in victim blaming or simply disappear. Nas recently made a documentary exploring the reasons behind victim blaming, and interviewed the NY Times' Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, who broke the Harvey Weinstein story, as well as Gender Knot favourites Dr Mithu Sanyal and Dr Jackson Katz. Check it out here for background: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3csyv0q In this episode Nas and Dan talk about ways we can help victims instead. We'd also like to know your experiences if you've been in this scenario, as either a victim or someone being told of an assault, and any tips you have for how to help victims. We also talk about an excellent podcast from Slate you should check out called Man Up... check it out here: https://slate.com/podcasts/man-up We're on hiatus and will be back with a new season in March. The trauma of sexual assault is both personal and brutal. But what may be an indisputably traumatic event for one person is often challenged by another, and the responsibility for events gets scattered in the process. Why is it so common for people to look for reasons to blame the victims of sexual assault for what has happened to them? Nastaran Tavakoli-Far finds multiple reasons from this, speaking to experts and to victims. We hear from Dr Mithu Sanyal about the role of long-standing attitudes towards gender and sexuality. New York Times journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey tell us about power and the workplace and who is more likely to be believed. Dr Jackson Katz and Dr Laura Niemi explain the roles of both group dynamics and the language we use and how these often work to protect perpetrators rather than to support victims Presenter and producer: Nastaran Tavakoli-Far Editor: Andrew Smith (Photo: Protest sign held up during 'Slut Walk' protests against victim blaming in Munich, Germany / Credit: Alexander Pohl / Nur Photo / Getty Images)

But sometimes men who want to help out do more harm then good. Do male feminists help the cause, or simply hijack it for their own gains? From birth, many boys are taught that to be a man you have to be competitive and emotionally tough and that vulnerability is a women's domain. How we socialise our children around privilege and entitlement impacts our society tremendously. Even in the most emotionally resourced families, boys and girls often see gender inequality constantly feeding into their subconscious through media, movies and books. This is the basis for what is referred to as male privilege. In this episode, we explore what it mean to be raising children in this culture. Sean Tonnet speaks with Luke Addinsall: therapist, consultant, facilitator and specialist in Mens Issues, whose work with men and families is changing our view on Masculinity and fathering.List of references (eg book titles/websites mentioned) 1. We kick off season two with a question for men who want to be better allies to women: how can men best help feminism? It's a pivotal moment in history, and so many men want to help out, but what should they do more of and what should they avoid? Words matter. What are men supposed to do when inappropriate language about women occurs?  Obviously we should stand up and speak out against it.  But that doesn't always happen.  I discuss in this podcast a strategy for emerging male adults to combat this kind of dialogue that is degrading to women, dialogue that is too often exchanged and accepted in male environments and culture.  This is an leadership issue and a serious conversation that more men have to have. Over the years I have worked with many male college students who don't have the tools and strategies to stand up for women in these situations.  When you break it down into 3 actions it gives a path to what we all want...to shift male culture.  I discuss a quick strategy for these situations... 1) Leave 2) Change the subject 3) Speak out This podcast is for all men and anyone who wants to help men to no longer become what Jackson Katz calls the "bystander".  Check out his TED talk here, its well worth the 17 minutes! This is a very complex subject and I don't presume to have all the answers.  This comes from years of working with my interns for our bike tour company, giving them tools to use when they head back into college life. If you wonder if I really am recording a podcast from a coffee shop on Nantucket, or find an urge to work with me in any way, here's a couple ways of finding out more and contacting me. email: jason@nantucketbybike.com Website  www.jasonmbridges.com TEDx Talk Practicing Emotional Intelligence Instagram @jasonmbridges *music credit in body of podcast - Audiobinger

Cass Midgley and Bob Pondillo converse with Elliot, an expert in sexual misconduct in the workplace, and a second guest, Lauren Martin Day, a woman who has experienced unethical sexual and relational misconduct.  Oscar Wilde once wrote, “Everything in the world is about sex except sex. Sex is about power.” This episode is about sex. It is a detour from our regular format of interviewing people who have deconverted from Christianity. Both guests did deconvert from their childhood faiths, but we don't discuss that today. Instead, we're discussing what I think is a pivotal time in American culture when we, as a society and especially women are drawing a line in the sand and saying enough is enough with this patriarchal, misogynistic treatment of women and sexuality. Our hope in putting out this particular episode is to increase awareness, understanding and empathy for the mistreatment of women that is so entrenched in our culture. Female objectivity and inferiority is a norm we have to change and one way we can do that is educate ourselves. For men, we would do well to be understand what it's like to be a woman in this male-dominant world. Like a fish doesn't know what water is, men don't know what patriarchy is. Like whites don't understand what the big deal is with racism. These are blind-spots afforded to those who, often by no doing on their part, are members of the empowered, hegemonic demography. I think I was in my 20's when someone pointed out the absurdity that every president of the United States were men. Ani Defranco wrote, "Patriarchy is like the elephant in the room that we don't talk about, but how could it not affect the planet radically when it's the superstructure of human society."   This touches on a subject that is a big deal to me--conflict resolution. In the world we find ourselves, often the primary task of every aspect of human relations is conflict resolution. It's parenting, it's managerial in the workplace, it's marital, it's global politics, it's in friendships. Connectivity is what every human longs for whether they know it or not. Even peace, it's what we all want. Not that peace is the absence of conflict, but if disagreement takes place in a context where mutual love and respect are in place, then that's fun and a part of learning and growing up. Conflict or competition that takes place in the context of hatred, disrespect, or resentment is not fun and in the end will be the demise of our species. The phrase "It takes to tango" is an idiom that insinuates blame on both sides--the offended and the offender. In the context of sex and gender, we blame the victim FAR too often. Even when reporting statistics of sex offenses, as Jackson Katz points out in a Tweet that went viral this week, “We talk about how many women were raped last year, not about how many men raped women. So you can see how the use of the passive voice has a political effect. It shifts the focus off men and onto women.” When it comes to human beings being the sovereign steward of their own space, safety, and comfort, we do not get to place judgement on their boundaries. I repeat, neither men nor women, get to judge another human being's boundaries as good or bad, too sensitive, snowflake, thin-skinned or fragile. That's just basic human rights and human dignity. That said, when we're outside the realm of abuse or inflicting harm, there are circumstances when a person can be hyper-sensitivity to the degree in which it is unhealthy for them, and is the primary contributor to the destruction of the healthy relationship. This might happen when one's sense of entitlement, or one's fears are completely unwarranted and their thin-skin is the primary cause of the conflict. Either way, both parties should always be free to exercise their right to remove themselves from any relationship they deem unhealthy, which can be created by aggression or passive aggression. Obviously the battle of the sexes has been with us a long time and will take a long time to align with reality and truth. And this episode is our little attempt to help out such progress. Ani DiMarco said, "Patriarchy is a fundamental imbalance underlying society And it's one we rarely address because it's so universal. But as I get older, I see that peace is a product of balance." The power struggle is always a dead end. True power is that which comes from love and self-confidence. Healthy power is available to all without having to diminish someone else's. It is not a zero-sum environment. If one feels they must take away someone else's power in order to feel powerful, that is counterfeit power and actually cowardice. We taped these conversations on October 14th, 2017. We interview people you don’t know, about a subject no one wants to talk about. We hope to encourage people in the process of deconstructing their faith and help curb the loneliness that accompanies it. We think the world is a better place when more people live by sight, not by faith. Please subscribe to our podcast, and leave a review wherever you listen to podcasts.
