“In 2012 … Chris Spealler, the legend, driving a comeback that was just ridiculous. … He is behind throughout the course of this weekend. This is a heavy Regional. … From a loading perspective, Spealler looked like he was outmatched a bit. … It came down to the final chipper. … He had to execute an amazing snatch ladder where I think he maybe hit like 225 (lb) but at the time it was like, ‘This is insane for someone his size to snatch this much.' But I'll just never forget how electric it was.” — Adrian Conway on his most memorable Regional experience Athlete Communications Manager Becky Harsh, and multi-year Games athletes Adrian Conway and Stacie Tovar join host Chase Ingraham on the podcast to review the latest edition of the Hopper. A former college wrestler from a family of standout athletes, Chris Spealler quickly became one of CrossFit's leading ambassadors, impressing and inspiring newcomers to the sport with his underdog spirit, unequaled work ethic, and warm personality. A competitor at the very first CrossFit Games in 2007, he would eventually collect a pair of Southwest Regional titles and three Top 10 finishes at the Games (2007, 2008, 2010), along with a “Spirit of the Games” award in 2010. One of Speal's most inspiring achievements came in 2014, when—at age 35 and against tougher competition than ever before—he returned to finish 2nd at Regionals and punch his ticket to the Games for a seventh time. He was the only performer from the '07 Games who was also in the 2014 field. Three years later, at the ‘17 Games, Chris reached the podium in the Masters 35-39 division, showcasing the skills that have made him a true legend of the sport. Though he's now retired from competition, Spealler continues to train and coach at CrossFit Park City in Utah. On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we hang out with Crossfit legend, Chris Spealler. Legend might seem like a strong word to some but to me and many others, Chris Spealler is the epitome of the word legend. The dictionary says a legend is (quote) “a famous or important person who is known for doing something extremely well.” And by this definition; Chris Spealler is, by all accounts, a legend. Spealler is a former college wrestler from a family of standout athletes, Chris Spealler quickly became one of CrossFit’s leading ambassadors, impressing and inspiring newcomers to the sport with his underdog spirit, unequaled work ethic, and warm personality. A competitor at the very first CrossFit Games in 2007. He was the only performer from the ’07 Games who was also in the 2014 games. Spealler continues to train and coach at CrossFit Park City in Utah, where he lives with his wife Sarah and their children Roark and Myla and where we recorded this podcast. I’m a huge fan of Chris Spealler for a hundred reasons. Not least of which is his commitment to his family. And so it was only natural to include all of them on this podcast. Spealler’s wife Sarah shares how they met and began dating, which is a wild story. Chris shares his fitness knowledge. And we talk about mental toughness; something Spealler knows and understands all too well. Hunting is altogether new to Chris. So I ask the Gritty Bowmen community to welcome the Spealler family into the hunting life.   Chris has just started his own podcast called Icon Athlete Podcast. If you want to learn more about fitness or just like Chris Spealler, do me a favor, and go and subscribe to his podcast. We’re joined this week by Chris Spealler. Chris opens the show discussing the transition from competitor to coach in the 2016 CrossFit Games. We quickly switch gears to a discussion around culture. Specifically, we discuss ways that your programming and values can influence the culture of your gym. For Chris this comes down to his “why”. Why do you program? Why do you offer what you offer? Why are your members in your gym? What are they there to achieve? Chris and I also chat about Icon Athlete. Icon Athlete is, in essence, the culmination of nearly a decade of coaching, competition, and programming. In short, this is Chris’s “why”. One takeaway we arrive at for the affiliate owner is this practice of “why”. Any class you coach, workout you program, and offering in your gym should have a reason behind it. We wrap up the showing chatting about the emotional aspects of Affiliate ownership and some advice Chris would go back and give himself back when he first opened CrossFit Park City.
