As an executive coach, Harshaw helps these clients achieve clarity on their goals, devise measurable plans, and guides them towards success. His approach illustrates the importance of understanding and catering to the specific needs of one's target audience to create a significant impact and foster growth.Keys to Success and FailureUnderstanding the factors contributing to success and failure is essential for growth and improvement. Success typically stems from an unwavering belief in oneself, setting goals that align with personal values, being surrounded by excellence, and having a clear vision and plan. To address failure, it is crucial to embrace setbacks, learn from mistakes, and use the experience as a stepping stone towards success. Jim Harshaw offered valuable insights on this topic during his interview with Jamie Bateman. He shared that there were four critical factors that allowed him to perform through failure and achieve success – clear vision, goal-setting, an environment of excellence, and a solid plan. Harshaw's story highlights the importance of understanding and applying these key concepts to overcome challenges and reach one's full potential.Letting Go of the OutcomeFocusing solely on outcomes can lead to unnecessary pressure, anxiety, and self-sabotage. It is vital to detach from results and concentrate on the process in order to perform at one's best. To do this, individuals can practice staying present in the moment, avoiding self-centeredness, and placing their attention on others. These techniques can create a more fulfilling experience and steer people away from the potential pitfalls of journeying only for reward. Jim Harshaw spoke about the importance of letting go of the outcome in both sports and public speaking. He found that staying present and focusing on others helped him perform better and reduced his anxiety. For example, by concentrating on the speaker before him rather than rehearsing his speech, Harshaw remained grounded in the moment. His experience underscores the benefits of staying present and allocating focus to the here and now.Books and ResourcesHow to Win Friends and Influence PeopleBuilt to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies (Harper Business Essentials) Recommended episode from Success Through Failures Podcast:#216 My Last Day: How and Why I Quit My Job When There Was a Lot on the LineConnect with Jim Harshaw: WEBSITE: https://jimharshawjr.com/LINKEDIN: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jimharshaw/PODCAST: Success Through Failure PodcastFACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1136934370INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/jimharshawjr/TWITTER: https://twitter.com/jimharshawConnect with us WEBSITE: https://www.adversity2abundance.comLeave us a rating or review: https://www.adversity2abundance.com/reviews/new/ or hereGot comments, feedback or suggestions? Successful people take risks. They also fail, and fail repeatedly. The people that we admire are the products of failure. So why are we sometimes afraid to fail ourselves? This week on CTTN, former Division I wrestler Jim Harshaw prompts us to press the button. Surround yourself with situations that teach you how to fail--run the 5k, ask for the raise, start the business, knowing that you may not achieve your desired outcome. Then, take a productive pause and evaluate. Shine a light on failure, so that you are not only accustomed to it, but grateful for it. Jim Harshaw, Jr. helps people lead lives of significance, success, and balance. Find him, his podcast, his TED Talk, and his programs at

Jim Harshaw is a TEDx Speaker, performance coach, former Division I All American wrestler and former Division I head coach. It took him 16 years to become an All American and he failed many times, often not just with a bruised ego but blood on his face. At age 26, I found myself as the youngest Division I head coach in the country. He talks to Ed Andrew about success through failure. He has spent his life surrounded by elite performers – Olympians, CEOs, and millionaires. They’ve all struggled and failed on their way to success. His mission is help people find success through the many adventures they have had before.
Michael wrote me the morning before we scheduled this conversation to say he ended up spending more time on the screen when he intended less. He wondered if we should skip it. Longtime listeners may remember similar results with guests Jim Harshaw and Caspar Craven.I told him I'm not looking for a Disney version implying that acting sustainable was easy. I believe listeners engage more with hearing the challenges than perfection, though it would mean him sounding human. He magnanimously agreed. So we'll get to hear his challenges. As it happens, his next book is called Hooked: Food, Free Will, and How the Food Giants Exploit Our Addictions, which overlaps with getting hooked on screen time. We ended up with some sneak preview of the book and how it relates to polluting behavior, especially Michael's challenge. We describe a parallel between changing eating habits and sustainability habits came across, as well as the techniques doof industries use to establish habits that help them, however unhealthy for you or damaging to Earth's ability to sustain life and human society. Since they work to get past your defenses, often with children too young to have developed defenses, I would call them insidious or creepy, like a tick creeping slowly past your defenses. The challenge in changing these habits, from one perspective, is to create new neural pathways. We focus on the objects of our craving and the craving, but looking past our craving to seeing that we are training ourselves and the feelings of withdrawal will pass seems to make iteasier. Action Plan: https://jimharshawjr.com/ACTION Free Clarity Call: https://jimharshawjr.com/APPLY Fear, Anxiety, Performance. Heath Eslinger is a dynamic leader and communicator who has been changing lives for over two decades. His passion for individuals and organizations to simply evaluate their circumstances and do things “a better way” has become contagious. His experience as a successful Division I wrestling coach has given him a training ground to see what it really takes to get an organization to believe in a system, buy into a philosophy, and perform at a high level. This experience, coupled with a passionate ability to communicate, makes him a speaker that listeners love to hear. In athletics specifically, Heath realized as a coach that many athletes, parents, coaches and organizations were missing out on the true joy of the journey. Society has become so consumed with an immediate outcome that we have lost sight of the life lessons our journey teaches. “A Better Way” was developed to help parents, coaches, athletes, teams, and organizations get the most out of their journey by focusing on developing intrinsic qualities that will last a lifetime and carry you through some of life’s most difficult times. I can't give a million dollars or start a foundation with profits from my business that will build orphanages in Africa." Or maybe you can... I know some of my listeners and readers do have this kind of wealth. But maybe you're too busy or you have other distractions stopping you. So, we let it go. We forget about giving. We focus on ourselves. Our own self-preservation. Our bank account. Our family. Our job. There's nothing wrong with focusing on those things. But what if you could do both? Mark talks about overcoming adversity, putting people in your life to support you and the importance of accepting the hand your dealt but then responding to it. Introduction/Bio: Hey everyone and welcome to the All-Star Leader Podcast, where together we learn about leadership from the best and brightest, and keep it fun by connecting it to our passion for sports! Today we are privileged to be joined by someone who knows how to overcome adversity, and who will teach us just how to do it. Mark Goblowsky is a martial arts expert, author, business owner, coach, podcast host and father. His upcoming book, Strength Through the Struggle, is due out this spring. Mark thanks so much for coming on the show! Interview Questions: Tell us first of all how you came to focus your work on this area of overcoming adversity. There are about 7 billion people who will face adversity at some time in their lives, so a big market! His son was hurt in a hit/run car accident; he felt alone; wasn't sure how to deal with it Wanted to create something that others could have as a resource when they were confronted with adversity; to let them know they aren't alone Many of us look for ways to avoid adversity; how do we know when that's the right course or when we need to face something head on? There are lots of people who actively look for adversity (ultramarathon runners; climbers; etc.) Most of us are not like that However, many of us are looking for an effortless life, and we're trying to avoid the pain that is necessary to get that growth So look at adversity as whether it's going to serve me that is going to make me a better version of myself (lawyer example; athlete example) As a parent, we wish raising kids was easy, but it's not. And those struggles are opportunities for us to become better versions of ourselves. When we press into those adversities, we gain strength and can serve others How do we do it?! What does it look like or what are helpful tools to use when we face those situations? Life deals what it deals, and we have to come to terms with reality Important to embrace the fact we don't have control over the hand dealt to us; we can only control how we respond He has failed at this in the past and got caught up in how the situation happened (Daniel asks about Mark's martial arts) – Mark had a tough upbringing; was molested as a child; but when Kung-Fu came out, he admired the main character's peace and power, the strength and ability to protect himself; didn't pursue it until he was in his 20s and by that time he had been attacked, stabbed, etc. so he knew how to scrap; Realized the pain of being afraid the rest of his life was greater than any pain that would come from learning Kung-Fu Kung-Fe became something Mark could fall back on when his son was hurt There was so much uncertainty and so much fear; sitting next to his bed that first night, holding his hand, thought if he held his hand, he could keep him here on the earth and prevent him from dying (Daniel shares about his own situation with his infant daughter) When you teach or coach someone who is going through a tough time, what are some of the common mistakes you see people make when trying to get through it? Right that they're not really mistakes; there are a lot of unknowns, so you're just learning along the way People try to make too many changes at once, and that is a very difficult thing to do; we didn't get unhealthy overnight, and we're not going to fix it overnight either We don't take very good care of ourselves, so we need to show some self-leadership; he should have gotten some help; tried to gut his way through it and shouldn't have done that; gotta find a way to hang on to hope How important is having a support network around you? Family/friends? No man is an island; we really need each other; men aren't good at reaching out and being honest about how we feel on the inside There is an increase in the suicide rate of men in the U.S., and that's scary Men don't have other men around them to share the tough conversations with; we're scared He stepped out and went to a conference at one point that really helped him connect with others going through traumatic situations, and it was a tremendous help His encouragement for people who are struggling is to find someone you can trust, start to connect with them, and have the honest conversations about what is going on (Daniel follows up with encouragement to get people around you) Men be vulnerable with your wife; they are in your corner but we need to trust them and give them the benefit of the doubt You have a remarkable podcast of your own, and I'd like to ask you to share a few stories from your show to help bring this home. Ray Edwards is well-known in the copywriting and sales world and is a massive success by most measures, but he shared a significant struggle on your show. What can you tell us about that. Jim Harshaw of Wrestling with Success Podcast talks about his blue-collar upbringing and how it set the tone for his approach to sports and business, and about his crushing defeat at the end of his wrestling career and why that was the best moment of his life. Guest Bio: Failure, struggle and setbacks are not… The post SA 041: All-American College Wrestler Jim Harshaw on Failure's Role in Success in Sports, Business, and Life appeared first on Nick Dinardo.
Jim Harshaw shares stories and strategies on how failure is essential to eventually becoming successful. On March 20, 1998, Jim Harshaw ended his sixteenth year of wrestling ended in a locker room with blood on his face and tears in his eyes. He had just lost the match to become an NCAA Division I All American. He had one more season at the University of Virginia. One more chance. And exactly one year later, in front of over 14,000 fans at the NCAA Championships, He did it. He earned a place on the podium as one of just eight wrestlers in the country with the status of Division I All American. Jim followed a blueprint for success to get there. The same blueprint got him invited to the Olympic Training Center and took him overseas to compete on a US National Team. Unfortunately, no one taught him how to apply this blueprint to life outside of athletics. Fast forward 15 years, and He was working below his potential and feeling stuck. But then he started noticing patterns in my life. Patterns of failure and success. He noticed them in business, in personal relationships, in his health and well-being, and in his level of happiness. These patterns reminded Jim of how I'd failed as a wrestler. And how He'd been successful. Jim began to see how those lessons could be replicated throughout my life. When he looked at other former athletes who had been able to achieve success, the same patterns were there. That's when he knew he'd found a framework for creating a path to elite success in the real world.
CP and Smalls welcome Marketing and fundraising master Jim Harshaw to explain the future of NCAA Wrestling.
