#439 (Pt 1 of 5) The Truth About Success: A Framework for How to Master Peak Performance in Business and Life ----- Action Plan: https://jimharshawjr.com/ACTION Free Clarity Call: https://jimharshawjr.com/APPLY If you're in search of a framework for getting clear on the right goals for you and executing consistently, you're in the right place. Thinking back to my days as a Division I All American athlete, success was crystal clear. But stepping outside the wrestling arena, I learned firsthand that a clear path to success in the real world can be elusive. In this episode of the “Success for the Athletic-Minded Man,” I'm diving deep into the Reveal Your Path framework— the very system that has shaped my life and my clients' lives. This framework stands on four pillars: Vision and Values, Aligned Goals, Environment of Excellence, and a Plan for Follow Through. Just like an athlete following a clear plan for success, after this episode, you'll have a roadmap that's tailored to your own vision, values, and goals. This roadmap will guide you toward your own north star, give you clarity, and empower you to maintain balance while operating at your maximum capacity. This isn't a new concept but it's a proven one that I rediscovered when reflecting on my journey from underperformer to peak performer as an athlete. So if you're ready to live a life of peak performance, don't just listen to this episode but take action and implement these principles into your life. If you don't have time to listen to the entire episode or if you hear something that you like but don't have time to write it down, be sure to grab your free copy of the Action Plan from this episode— as well as get access to action plans from EVERY episode— at http://www.JimHarshawJr.com/Action.

On November 3rd, America lost one of the greatest all-around athletes of this or any age. Ray Guy was the first punter to ever be drafted in the first round into the NFL. During his career with the Oakland Raiders, he led the team to three Super Bowl victories. He was the first pure-punter to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. And he remains the standard by which all other kickers are judged. But Ray was so much more. During his years with the University of Southern Mississippi, he dominated not only as a kicker, but as sports writer Rick Cleveland recalls, "besides being USM's first consensus Division I All-American as a punter, Guy also shares the school's pass interception record. He was the team's emergency quarterback and could throw the ball 80 yards, seemingly with no great effort." Ray also was a first class pitcher and once pitched a no-hitter. Senior Writer with University Communications, David Tisdale joins Mississippi Moments Producer Ross Walton in a discussion of Guy's career and his memories of interviewing the Pro Football Hall of Famer for the Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage. We then give a listen to the MSMO episode featuring excerpts from that interview, first broadcast in January of this year. To read Rick Cleveland's elegant tribute to his friend Ray Guy, follow this link to the Mississippi Today article: https://mississippitoday.org/2022/11/03/ray-guy-best-athlete-mississippi

Heath Eslinger is a dynamic leader and communicator who has been changing lives for over two decades. His passion for individuals and organizations to simply evaluate their circumstances and do things “a better way” has become contagious. His experience as a successful Division I wrestling coach has given him a training ground to see what it really takes to get an organization to believe in a system, buy into a philosophy, and perform at a high level. This experience, coupled with a passionate ability to communicate, makes him a speaker that listeners love to hear. In athletics specifically, Heath realized as a coach that many athletes, parents, coaches and organizations were missing out on the true joy of the journey. Society has become so consumed with an immediate outcome that we have lost sight of the life lessons our journey teaches. “A Better Way” was developed to help parents, coaches, athletes, teams, and organizations get the most out of their journey by focusing on developing intrinsic qualities that will last a lifetime and carry you through some of life’s most difficult times. No problem. Would you have the guts to say this if you lost your legs? On January 18, 2007, Matt Bradford was severely injured after stepping on an Improvised Explosive Device in Haditha Iraq. At that moment, his whole life was detoured. He learned the true meaning of overcoming, adapting, and success through failure. Matt never let his injuries define who he was or what he could do. He sees every obstacle as a new challenge for him to overcome. Over the years, he has been inspired to share his story to motivate others through their own life challenges with his message of #JustWalk and #NoLegsNoVisionNoProblem. I hope by the end of this interview, you find the courage to look at Your challenges, Your failures, Your setbacks, Your adversity, ... and have the mindset of no legs, no vision, no problem. originally from High Ridge, MO, Michael grew up in a fairly typical blue-collar, hard-working, middle-America household. Michael is the son of a union carpenter and a secretary. The value of hard work was instilled early on by Michael's parents and he attributes a lot of his blue-collar work ethic to the example they provided. Passing on scholarship offers to smaller schools, Michael took a leap of faith and walked onto the University of Missouri wrestling team in 2004 after high school graduation. He knew “betting on himself” was a gamble and that it's no easy task to compete at the highest level of college wrestling, but that didn't stop him. Today Michael looks back at his time at MIZZOU as another chapter in the continual defining seasons of is life. He was the most unaccomplished young man on the team, but through determination and putting in more work than was expected of him, he was able to amass a 100-30 record, All-American honours and become a leader on the team.A list of his accomplishments at the University of Missouri include:Four-time NCAA qualifierDivision I All-AmericanTwo-time runner-up at BIG XII ChampionshipsFour-year starter100 career winsTwo-year team captainIn 2009, three months after graduation, Michael competed in his first MMA fight, won by first-round TKO and hasn't looked back since. Winning multiple world titles has kept Michael a perennial top 10 lightweights in the world rankings. He has been involved in some of the most action-packed fights in Mixed Martial Arts history being nominated for “Fight Of The Year” three different times. 2011, 2013 and 2016 Fight Of The Year nominations Most wins in Bellator history Most submission wins in Bellator lightweight history Most knockout wins in Bellator lightweight history 3 Time Bellator Lightweight champion Ranked Top 10 in the worldFollow Michael On Social MediaInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/mikechandlermma/Website - https://www.michaelchandler.com/who-is-michael-chandler/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/mikechandlermma/Follow The Story Box on Social MediaInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/thestoryboxpodcast/Facebook Page - https://www.facebook.com/thestoryboxpodcastFacebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/125781678801513YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEXHMRPxW0qoxV8kKjaFdYwIf you enjoyed this episode please subscribe to YouTube & Apple Podcasts, and leave a 5-star positive rating and review over on Apple Podcasts. Michael Hammond and Jeff Gaudette: How New Virtual Tools Will Transform Your Running and Racing Some big changes have been happening this year at RunnersConnect. You may or may not have noticed that company founder Jeff Gaudette has been a little quieter than usual while working on a mystery project and Michael Hammond has stepped up as CEO. Coach Claire interviews them both to find out what’s been going on and what RunnersConnect members can expect to see going forward. First, Head Coach Michael Hammond tells us who he is, what big changes were happening in RunnersConnect heading into 2020, and how the company has pivoted in response to the pandemic. How does an online coaching platform focused on training runners for races stay relevant during these unprecedented times when essentially every race for the year has been canceled? Next, Jeff Gaudette discusses his exciting new company he’s been working on behind the scenes to help you stay motivated and at your running best during this new norm of virtual racing. He’s come up with a great new way to make individual racing fair, fun, and more engaging. There’s definitely a lot to look forward to! Jeff Gaudette is an elite marathoner who founded RunnersConnect in 2011 as a better way to coach his personal clients. He was a two-time Division-I All-American in Cross Country at Brown University and competed professionally for four years afterwards. He has competed internationally in numerous marathons with a personal best of 2:22:02, and has recorded Olympic Trials qualifying times in the marathon and 10,000 meters. Jeff’s coaching career started in 2004 when he was a member of the Hansons-Brooks professional team. He’s had success at all levels of coaching; high school, college, local elite, and everyday runners. Under his tutelage, hundreds of runners have finished their first marathon and he’s helped countless runners qualify for Boston. Jeff has been featured in Running Times magazine, Endurance Magazine, as well as numerous local magazine fitness columns. Michael Hammond is the Head Coach and newly appointed CEO of RunnersConnect. He competed in cross country and track while at Virginia Tech, earning two ACC titles and four NCAA All-American honors. His individual efforts led his team to four ACC team championships: one in cross country, two in indoor track, and one in outdoor track. Post-collegiately, Michael has competed formerly as a member of Furman Elite in Greenville, South Carolina and currently as an independent athlete. He now trains at his alma mater while also serving as a volunteer assistant with the team. Michael’s passion for helping athletes succeed began while counseling high school runners at cross country camps. Since then he has coached several local athletes of various ability levels while continuing to gain experience at the college level. You can catch him every Friday on the Team Update segments of the Run To The Top podcast. Questions Michael and Jeff are asked: 2:35 2020 has been a historic year, to say the least, with everything that is going on in the world. Big changes were going on in Runners Connect before the pandemic hit and we expected an exciting year, but obviously nothing like this could have been predicted. If we can rewind to December 2019, what was your vision for Runners Connect in 2020? 6:24 Most of our listeners do know what RunnersConnect offers, but for those who don’t, could you just give just a quick elevator speech of exactly if you go to RunnersConnect, what are you looking at? What would you get if you go to RunnersConnect? 8:31 Let’s get into all the races being canceled. Traditionally, RunnersConnect has always been race-oriented, meaning that most of our athletes sign up with a particular race in mind, so obviously RunnersConnect had to make some changes. What were the changes that RunnersConnect made? 13:45 Speaking of getting fitter and stronger, you have been doing something a little special with strength training. Do you want to talk about what you’ve been doing pretty much since the pandemic started to help people get strong? 22:00 You mentioned that you and Jeff came up with this idea for live sessions, so we’re going to hear from him at the end of our conversation, but I would love to talk about Jeff while he’s not here for a second. We at RunnersConnect never really made a big splash or a big announcement about where is Jeff and who is this guy Michael? So I’m going to give the ball to you and talk about that. What on earth has happened to Jeff Gaudette and who are you, Michael? 28:57 We’ve got some great things coming up for our RC members, and I will ask Jeff when he comes on about some of those exciting new features, but before we wrap up with you, Michael, what do you see happening in the future of RunnersConnect? I know it’s hard to see so far with nobody knows when this pandemic’s going to end, but anything you’d like to share about how we’re moving forward? 40:18 Jeff, can you talk about your new company Fitually, how it started and why it’s so special? Questions I ask everyone: 33:39 If you could go back and talk to yourself when you first started running, what advice would you give yourself? 35:16 What is the greatest gift that running has given you? 37:49 Where can listeners connect with you? Quotes by Michael and Jeff: “We want to provide every single resource we possibly can to give you what you need to run your best.” “So much of RunnersConnect in the past has always been like a utility. You want to run ‘X’ time or finish ‘X’ race or run ‘X’ distance, you come to us; we help you achieve that. Bam. That’s it. Whereas there’s so much more to it than that. People desire so much more to it than that. So I think that’s been a huge learning point to me in doing live sessions.” “We’re definitely going to do everything we can to improve the running lives and just the lives in general from a holistic standpoint of everyone who’s one of our athletes or one of our listeners.” “I started to think, is there a way that we can make virtual events better? Is there a way we can bring some of the elements that make in-person races exciting to a virtual event?” Take a Listen on Your Next Run Want more awesome interviews and advice? We all want to give. Or at least we should. Sometimes we feel like, "how am I supposed to give? I'm just little old me. I can't give a million dollars or start a foundation with profits from my business that will build orphanages in Africa." Or maybe you can... I know some of my listeners and readers do have this kind of wealth. But maybe you're too busy or you have other distractions stopping you. So, we let it go. We forget about giving. We focus on ourselves. Our own self-preservation. Our bank account. Our family. Our job. There's nothing wrong with focusing on those things. But what if you could do both? What if actually focusing on others-- what if finding a way to give-- actually helps us in our relationships, our bank account, and our work? That’s what we’ll talk about in today’s episode! Why You Are Here You've worked hard to achieve greatness. You’ve set goals and maybe even set records. You’ve definitely failed and you’ve at some point found yourself questioning if you were on the right track. You may have to make a presentation at work, speak to a small group of 10 people, lead a meeting, speak at a wedding, or even give a eulogy. You don’t want to screw these opportunities up. Katie Kellner fractured her pelvis training for her first Boston marathon. Ring a bell? . She's a 2 time Olympic Trials Marathon qualifier and placed 57th at the trials this February. She was a Division I All-American in both Cross Country and the 10K on the track at Cornell, where she also was Ivy League Champ in both events. She's transitioning right now from being a professional runner (paid to run) to an elite runner (still super fast, paycheck comes from elsewhere). She's now a biostatistician currently doing research on the Coronavirus. . Katie has a great attitude about injury recovery: Focus your energy on rebuilding your bone instead of lifting weights (cross training). Some pearls of wisdom from this conversation are: . Don't focus too much on the past (never going to be as good as I was) or too much on the future (I need to get ready for X race) - but what you can do today. Getting a massage, icing, sleeping an extra hour are all helpful in making you a better athlete. Doing hard work is the only way you are making yourself faster, doing hard work is not a recipe for success while you're injured. . If you're interested in being coached by Katie (she is AMAZING! super supportive and responsive) go to http://www.forwardfocusrunning.com/. - Jim Harshaw Jr is a speaker, consultant and former Division I All American wrestler. Here is a quick story by him: I grew up in a blue-collar home so learned the value of hard work early on. I have spent my life surrounded by Olympians, CEO's and millionaires. They've all struggled and failed on their way to success. Just like you. On March 20, 1998, my sixteenth year of wrestling ended in a locker room with blood on my face and tears in my eyes. I'd just lost the match to become an NCAA Division I All American. But I had one more season at the University of Virginia. One more chance. And exactly one year later, in front of over 14,000 fans at the NCAA Championships, I did it. I earned a place on the podium as one of just eight wrestlers in the country with the status of Division I All American. I followed a blueprint for success to get there. The same blueprint got me invited to the Olympic Training Center and took me overseas to compete on a US National Team. Jim Harshaw shares stories and strategies on how failure is essential to eventually becoming successful. On March 20, 1998, Jim Harshaw ended his sixteenth year of wrestling ended in a locker room with blood on his face and tears in his eyes. He had just lost the match to become an NCAA Division I All American. He had one more season at the University of Virginia. One more chance. And exactly one year later, in front of over 14,000 fans at the NCAA Championships, He did it. He earned a place on the podium as one of just eight wrestlers in the country with the status of Division I All American. Jim followed a blueprint for success to get there. The same blueprint got him invited to the Olympic Training Center and took him overseas to compete on a US National Team. Unfortunately, no one taught him how to apply this blueprint to life outside of athletics. Fast forward 15 years, and He was working below his potential and feeling stuck. But then he started noticing patterns in my life. Patterns of failure and success. He noticed them in business, in personal relationships, in his health and well-being, and in his level of happiness. These patterns reminded Jim of how I'd failed as a wrestler. And how He'd been successful. Jim began to see how those lessons could be replicated throughout my life. When he looked at other former athletes who had been able to achieve success, the same patterns were there. That's when he knew he'd found a framework for creating a path to elite success in the real world.
