“We have such a big pocket of people … that are unhappy. Chronic diseases … more than what it should be. … If there's a way to hopefully reach them and get them more involved in a box, I think that the CrossFit affiliate saves lives.” CrossFit Seminar Flowmaster and former Games athlete Eric O'Connor joins host Adrian Conway on the podcast to share his experience of becoming an integral part of CrossFit HQ. O'Connor was introduced to CrossFit in 2006 by multi-year Games athlete Chris Spealler. O'Connor — a former collegiate wrestler — enjoyed the workouts, but was skeptical. It wasn't until he started researching CrossFit and exploring The Journal that he was all in on the methodology and the sport. In 2008, O'Connor decided to take his Level 1 and began coaching. He eventually pursued his Level 2, interned on the Seminar staff, and now holds the highest CrossFit coaching certification — Certified CrossFit Level 4 Coach. Over his career, he has taught more than 450 CrossFit courses. In this episode, O'Connor dives deeper into his CrossFit story. He describes his journey as an athlete and coach through CrossFit's evolution, gives insight into coaching as an introvert, and discusses the benefits of feedback and being a continuous learner. He also explains his previous and current involvement in the company, from content creation to being a head judge to mentoring future CrossFit trainers. As always, stay to the end to hear O'Connor's answers to Conway's Final Five. This is a heavy Regional. … From a loading perspective, Spealler looked like he was outmatched a bit. … It came down to the final chipper. … He had to execute an amazing snatch ladder where I think he maybe hit like 225 (lb) but at the time it was like, ‘This is insane for someone his size to snatch this much.' But I'll just never forget how electric it was.” — Adrian Conway on his most memorable Regional experience Athlete Communications Manager Becky Harsh, and multi-year Games athletes Adrian Conway and Stacie Tovar join host Chase Ingraham on the podcast to review the latest edition of the Hopper. A former college wrestler from a family of standout athletes, Chris Spealler quickly became one of CrossFit's leading ambassadors, impressing and inspiring newcomers to the sport with his underdog spirit, unequaled work ethic, and warm personality. A competitor at the very first CrossFit Games in 2007, he would eventually collect a pair of Southwest Regional titles and three Top 10 finishes at the Games (2007, 2008, 2010), along with a “Spirit of the Games” award in 2010. One of Speal's most inspiring achievements came in 2014, when—at age 35 and against tougher competition than ever before—he returned to finish 2nd at Regionals and punch his ticket to the Games for a seventh time. He was the only performer from the '07 Games who was also in the 2014 field. Three years later, at the ‘17 Games, Chris reached the podium in the Masters 35-39 division, showcasing the skills that have made him a true legend of the sport. Though he's now retired from competition, Spealler continues to train and coach at CrossFit Park City in Utah. Miranda Alcaraz is as OG as it gets in the world of CrossFit. Multiple games appearances, seminar staff and affiliate owner, her name is synonymous with early CrossFit media and if you, like me, heavily drank the CrossFit Koolaid, you’ve no doubt seen her freestyle rap a time or two. Four years ago, Miranda and husband Julian started self programming and filming their home workouts as they took place in their garage. It was the early days of instagram, and an emerging online following as a programming authority given her time at Lynchpin (with the likes of Chris Spealler and Pat Sherwood), it didn’t take long before the social media world began to not only take note of the workouts the pair were doing, but most importantly, take part.As such, Street Parking was born - a completely online platform of programming tiered to suit athletes of all levels, with an emphasis on the simple. Minimal space and equipment but with maximal impact - the perfect programming for those unable to make it the brick and mortar affiliates for whatever reason.Fast forward to 2020. Covid is rife, and the fitness world scrambles to go online - an arena in which Street Parking has been trailblazing ahead for almost four years and in the perfect position to showcase what’s truly possible in the online space.Listen along as Miranda takes me through: The origins of Street ParkingThe challenges associated with rapid growth and family balanceCultivating and protecting Community Culture in an online settingHow to attract staff that align with the mission of the brandAnd a sneak peek into what’s in store for Street Parking in 2021.I really enjoyed this conversation, and if you’re a CrossFit fan, I’m sure you will too!Got 2 minutes to support the show? Please leave us a review and rating on your listening platform, and give us a follow onIG @morethan.macrosShow the sponsors some love!IG @marriedtomymacrosFb @MarriedtomymacrosW www.marriedtomymacros.comSupport the show (http://www.marriedtomymacros.com)

With some clarification, we determine that the client-trainer relationship was perhaps not a great fit. Other topics include: how to do a proper plank, are bodyweight exercises considered resistance training, and how do we reconcile the need to do increasingly more volume/intensity with your ability to recovery. The bulk this show is dedicated to a position statement from the American Heart Association related to saturated fat. The most salacious point in this statement has to do with coconut oil, specifically saturated fat in coconut oil. Thanks for listening, leaving a review, and sharing with a friend!

A former college wrestler from a family of standout athletes, Chris Spealler quickly became one of CrossFit’s leading ambassadors, impressing and inspiring newcomers to the sport with his underdog spirit, unequaled work ethic, and warm personality. A competitor at the very first CrossFit Games in 2007, he would eventually collect a pair of Southwest Regional titles and three Top 10 finishes at the Games (2007, 2008, 2010). To start, Chris talks about how he got into CrossFit. Next, he talks about the things that now shape his current life, and a short look into five years ago. Chris then talks about what made him decide to start having a coach as an athlete. He then compares what CrossFit was like back then from now, and talks about its evolution over the years.   Next, we talk about gun rights and Chris’ thoughts on them for CrossFit athletes. Chris talks about daily workout routines, and he shares with us what a day looks like at the end of a competition. We also ask him if he enjoys his training before he starts talking about what things are like before regional competitions. Things get interesting as Chris starts to talk about how he prepares for upcoming events. He also talks about what mindset he gets into when he’s competing in regionals. Finally, Chris talks about gymnastics and barbell movements.   For any aspiring athlete, this conversation is definitely worth a listen to. It’s interesting in more ways than one, though, as it gives us a look at how a professional works and functions day to day, and in the main event. On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we hang out with Crossfit legend, Chris Spealler. Legend might seem like a strong word to some but to me and many others, Chris Spealler is the epitome of the word legend. The dictionary says a legend is (quote) “a famous or important person who is known for doing something extremely well.” And by this definition; Chris Spealler is, by all accounts, a legend. Spealler is a former college wrestler from a family of standout athletes, Chris Spealler quickly became one of CrossFit’s leading ambassadors, impressing and inspiring newcomers to the sport with his underdog spirit, unequaled work ethic, and warm personality. A competitor at the very first CrossFit Games in 2007. He was the only performer from the ’07 Games who was also in the 2014 games. Spealler continues to train and coach at CrossFit Park City in Utah, where he lives with his wife Sarah and their children Roark and Myla and where we recorded this podcast. I’m a huge fan of Chris Spealler for a hundred reasons. Not least of which is his commitment to his family. And so it was only natural to include all of them on this podcast. Spealler’s wife Sarah shares how they met and began dating, which is a wild story. Chris shares his fitness knowledge. And we talk about mental toughness; something Spealler knows and understands all too well. Hunting is altogether new to Chris. So I ask the Gritty Bowmen community to welcome the Spealler family into the hunting life.   Chris has just started his own podcast called Icon Athlete Podcast. If you want to learn more about fitness or just like Chris Spealler, do me a favor, and go and subscribe to his podcast. I especially enjoyed his recent podcast with Matt Chan, a fellow Crossfit Games Athlete, who IS, in fact, also a bowhunter. Check it out! We’re joined this week by Chris Spealler. Chris opens the show discussing the transition from competitor to coach in the 2016 CrossFit Games. We quickly switch gears to a discussion around culture. Specifically, we discuss ways that your programming and values can influence the culture of your gym. For Chris this comes down to his “why”. Why do you program? Why do you offer what you offer? Why are your members in your gym? What are they there to achieve? Chris and I also chat about Icon Athlete. Icon Athlete is, in essence, the culmination of nearly a decade of coaching, competition, and programming. In short, this is Chris’s “why”. One takeaway we arrive at for the affiliate owner is this practice of “why”. Any class you coach, workout you program, and offering in your gym should have a reason behind it. We wrap up the showing chatting about the emotional aspects of Affiliate ownership and some advice Chris would go back and give himself back when he first opened CrossFit Park City.
