Beer tourism was back on the cards in 2024 in a big way – locally, at least, as we noted in our Year in Beer 2024 wrap. A number of new ale trails popped up, with those in WA's South West, Newcastle and the enhanced Inner West Ale Trail joining well-established ventures in places such as the NSW South Coast and Collingwood.Already in 2025, they've been joined by the Brookie Trail, which formalised the unofficial trek between the breweries of Brookvale. Not only is it the country's newest at time of writing, it has to be the easiest to take on: many of the venues are within easy eyesight of each other. To find out how it came about, what it's all about, and to learn more about beer businesses can work in harmony to bring visitors through all of their doors, we paid a visit, catching up with Freshwater Brewing co-founder Jonny Bucknall and 7th Day Brewery GM Joel Ridzuan (who had to travel an arduous 60m from brewery door to brewery door). As well as picking their brains about Brookie, beer tourism, and how they got the trail off the ground, we delve into their stories, the diversity the area's breweries bring, the challenges of operating as a small beer business in 2025, and what the local Macca's carpark needs to do to qualify for the trail.Prior to the main interview, we reflect on another tough few days in the beer industry. First, Brisbane pioneers Newstead Brewing closed their doors for good suddenly after trying to navigate years of endless unforeseen challenges; days later, Konvoy Kegs was placed into receivership after their main lender cut off funding.Rather more upbeat is the tale out of WA, where the founders of Funk Drinks Co. – best known for their ciders – have launched their first beer brewed with grains grown on their farm and malted locally too, while expressions of interest are now open for Sydney Beer Week, and you can still nominate for our second Bluestone Yeast Brewery of the Month.Start of segments: 9:17 – Jonny & Joel Part 1 31:00 – Rockstar Brewery Academy 37:36 – – Jonny & Joel Part 2 Relevant links: Crafty's Year in Beer 2024 Freshwater Brewing 7th Day Brewery The Brookie Trail Newstead Closes For Good Konvoy Kegs Go Into Receivership Funk Farmers Go Paddock To Pint Sydney Beer Week Nominate a Bluestone Yeast Brewery of the Month Rockstar Brewer AcademyTo find out more about supporting the show or otherwise partnering with The Crafty Pint, contact craig@craftypint.com.

Today we meet Liam Pereira, recently appointed Head of Hospitality and Community at Sydney's White Bay Beer Co. Liam has had an incredibly varied career in the brewing industry. From pulling pints in London to working in a hotel bar with early craft beer aspirations, to working in bottle shops, to being a co-owner of Dave's brewery tours and Sydney Beer Week to working at Batch brewing and now his latest position White Bay Beer Co, he has seen a lot. His career has spanned and also mirrored the formative years of craft beer. Liam was drawn to the passion and excitement of the industry's early days but is also seen it mature and confront a myriad of challenges. This podcast really looks at what people in the industry have learnt throughout their careers and Liam is one of those people that can really talk about some of the lessons that are to be learnt comma and that he has learnt himself. This episode of Beer is a Conversation is presented by HPA. Australia's leading hop grower offers a huge range of Aussie, international and innovative hop products that can help breweries of all sizes become more efficient, more sustainable, and more profitable. During the recent Sydney Beer Week we were fortunate to work with Kegstar to present this discussion panel looking at the future of beer festivals and beer events such as the very beer week we were attending. Events such as these were a great route to market for brewers in the early days of craft beer and also provided beer drinkers with a place to try all of the new and novel beers that were coming onto the market. But in the current market of the ever present tap takeover, with keg rotation a staple of craft beer bars and with every state having a craft beer week, and with every postcode seemingly wanting its own festival, has event fatigue set in? Our panel of Danielle Allen and Kerry McBride from Two Birds Brewing, Dave Phillips from Dave's Brewery Tours and Sydney Beer Week and Marty Keetels from Beer InCider take a look at the issue from both sides of the fence. What do brewers look for in a beer festival and what brings them back, and also what beer festivals do for the brewers and the beer drinking public. Enjoy the conversation.

This Brews News Week, Pete and Matt discuss what happened in the beer world including: The Independent Brewers Association has launched guidelines to assist brewers with labelling. A Twitter exchange between a State Government backbencher and Opposition Leader has prompted a new campaign to showcase local beer across WA. While last year's launch of Heineken 3 promised beer drinkers they could “Have it all“, Heineken's latest release forces drinkers to make some big choices...but they don't want to talk about them. Also, we'll be on the road in two weeks and you can join us at Sydney Beer Week for a live chat asking the question, “Have beer weeks had their day?” Admission is free but you can book here.

Nine Fingers Brew is one of Sydney’s exciting new Inner West craft beer breweries and cofounder & head brewer, Dave Anderson is such an inspiring guy! A home-brew fanatic from a young age, after losing his finger in an circular saw accident on a construction work-site Dave was determined to take life by the horns, created his own construction business and after winning multiple awards for his home-brews, turned his hand to bring his brewery dreams to life! Determined and centred, this wonderful chat with Dave Anderson illustrates that we can and should have multiple careers across this lifetime of ours, how we can be so much more than one dream and learning how to pivot when things don’t quite go the way we expected. A while later, they dropped the C and it became simply Sydney Beer Week. In this episode, Adrian chats to SBW team members Dave Phillips, Shonna Mulley, Ben Janeczko, and Mr. Craft Beer himself, Liam Pereira.
