What hoodoo? The Sharks get it done at Brookvale again. There's little time for celebrating though as a Storm is coming
Brookvale has finally broken through its century-old height ceiling! The Northern Beaches Council has just approved the first 18-metre building in the industrial area, setting a groundbreaking precedent that will transform this evolving suburb. For property owners in Brookvale, this seven-metre increase from the previous 11-metre restriction is revolutionary. Where development was once constrained to a single factory level with perhaps offices above, the new height allowance enables multiple levels of functional industrial space. The approved building showcases this potential with its striking six-level design – four levels above street level and two below – built almost boundary-to-boundary to maximize usable space. This approval doesn't exist in isolation. Westfields (formerly Warringah Mall) is reportedly planning approximately 1,500 residential units – roughly five times the size of a typical Meriton development. Together, these developments signal Brookvale's dramatic transformation from an aging industrial precinct to a modern, mixed-use hub. For downsizers especially, new residential options adjacent to shopping, healthcare, and public transport present compelling opportunities to remain in the Northern Beaches area. The conversation naturally turns to infrastructure concerns, particularly parking and traffic. Rather than restricting business types or development potential, there's growing sentiment that creative solutions are needed – from council-built multi-storey parking facilities to incorporating public parking levels within new developments. These approaches would support business growth rather than constraining it.What do you think about Brookvale's transformation? Are you excited about the potential for newer buildings and increased density, or concerned about the associated challenges? Share your thoughts with us and subscribe to Morning Minutes for more Northern Beaches property insights and development news.
Is there a better feeling than walking out of Brookvale Oval with the two points? I think not. If there's one game Storm are to win all season, it's this one against their arch rivals the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles, a hatred that stems back to 2007 and still lives on today. The two clubs despise one another, with players in both teams having knowledge of the history between the pair. Stormy Daniel reviews the Storm's big win, covers off on what's making Storm news, listener questions, throwback team list and TLT, who's in and who's out for the Storm's Round 6 clash with the Warriors this weekend at AAMI Park. The saga surrounding Daly Cherry-Evans exploded this week with confirmation that this would be his last year at Brookvale Oval. But CEO Tony Mestrov said they had known he was likely to leave the club since last December. Mestrov confirmed that Cherry Evans had asked for a release before last season and that he had been getting itchy feet. And he insists there's no problem with the player but he less impressed with his management.
It's a big vocal effort from Denis Carnahan as he gets his Frankie Valli on to tackle the big story of the week - Daly Cherry-Evans bolting from Brookvale!
The Parramatta Eels announced a pair of signings as Dylan Walker and Fleur Ginn bolster the NRL and NRLW squads respectively. The Tip Sheet looks at what both players bring to the club and go in-depth into how Walker could be used by Jason Ryles. Sixties and Forty20 then return to the regularly scheduled preview podcast as they cover a huge weekend at Brookvale with the Jersey Flegg, NSW Cup and NRL facing Manly into a triple-header. The lower grades are both looking to build on key wins against the Bulldogs in Round 3 while the NRL squad are aiming to convert a spirited effort against Canterbury into a breakthrough win against the Sea Eagles.
Beer tourism was back on the cards in 2024 in a big way – locally, at least, as we noted in our Year in Beer 2024 wrap. A number of new ale trails popped up, with those in WA's South West, Newcastle and the enhanced Inner West Ale Trail joining well-established ventures in places such as the NSW South Coast and Collingwood.Already in 2025, they've been joined by the Brookie Trail, which formalised the unofficial trek between the breweries of Brookvale. Not only is it the country's newest at time of writing, it has to be the easiest to take on: many of the venues are within easy eyesight of each other. To find out how it came about, what it's all about, and to learn more about beer businesses can work in harmony to bring visitors through all of their doors, we paid a visit, catching up with Freshwater Brewing co-founder Jonny Bucknall and 7th Day Brewery GM Joel Ridzuan (who had to travel an arduous 60m from brewery door to brewery door). As well as picking their brains about Brookie, beer tourism, and how they got the trail off the ground, we delve into their stories, the diversity the area's breweries bring, the challenges of operating as a small beer business in 2025, and what the local Macca's carpark needs to do to qualify for the trail.Prior to the main interview, we reflect on another tough few days in the beer industry. First, Brisbane pioneers Newstead Brewing closed their doors for good suddenly after trying to navigate years of endless unforeseen challenges; days later, Konvoy Kegs was placed into receivership after their main lender cut off funding.Rather more upbeat is the tale out of WA, where the founders of Funk Drinks Co. – best known for their ciders – have launched their first beer brewed with grains grown on their farm and malted locally too, while expressions of interest are now open for Sydney Beer Week, and you can still nominate for our second Bluestone Yeast Brewery of the Month.Start of segments: 9:17 – Jonny & Joel Part 1 31:00 – Rockstar Brewery Academy 37:36 – – Jonny & Joel Part 2 Relevant links: Crafty's Year in Beer 2024 Freshwater Brewing 7th Day Brewery The Brookie Trail Newstead Closes For Good Konvoy Kegs Go Into Receivership Funk Farmers Go Paddock To Pint Sydney Beer Week Nominate a Bluestone Yeast Brewery of the Month Rockstar Brewer AcademyTo find out more about supporting the show or otherwise partnering with The Crafty Pint, contact craig@craftypint.com.

Manly took another big step to locking in a finals spot with a solid win over the Warriors in dreadful conditions at Brookvale. However he did seem to be interested in an offer from Michael Carayannis to join his regime when the time comes to stop coaching!

When the comforting sands of Sydney's Northern Beaches slip through your fingers for a life elsewhere, can the promise of a new beginning outweigh the tug of home? We're sharing the heartfelt experiences of those who stepped away from the tight-knit community we cherish, like the elderly woman whose solitary Mother's Day in regional NSW echoed with the pangs of regret. Their stories, woven through today's conversation, capture the essence of human connection and the stark realities of moving back to Sydney, where the harsh gleam of prohibitive property prices and living costs could dampen even the most ardent spirit.Amidst these tales of nostalgia and the daunting economics of return, we pivot to the proactive steps for a secure financial future. Contrast the journeys of an 18-year-old taking their first financial steps with a 26-year-old navigating the crossroads of adulthood, and you'll find a roadmap to financial foresight. The woman who let go of her Brookvale haven for the uncertainty of change didn't just pack up a house; she packed up memories and lessons in the value of early sacrifices. As we sift through the ramifications of recent budget announcements, remember, nurturing your support network today fortifies the legacy you leave tomorrow. Join us as we unpack the complexities of life's transitions and the enduring power of community.
The Parramatta Eels had the Manly Sea Eagles on the ropes in Round 8 before a series of individual lapses from missed tackles to outright manic moments with Maika Sivo losing the plot. Sixties and Forty20 review an extremely frustrating loss in which the Eels had the game plan and had the momentum to spring the upset save for the above indiscretions and miscued goal-kicking. Manly's early shifts were nullified and their speedsters on the edges contained as the Eels executed the gameplan in the first half - so what went wrong in the second stanza? The boys call out the individuals who opened the door for Manly. How did Ethan Sanders fare in his debut? Pretty damn well as it turns out. Sixties and Forty20 laud the young playermaker's efforts at Brookvale - even if he got a welcome to the NRL moment care of Haumole Olakau'atu.
A stunning second half rout has seen the Parramatta Eels collapse from a 10-4 lead against the Dolphins to a 44-16 loss. It is Parra's second capitulation in three weeks and pushes the club right back to the precipice for the season outlook. As with the Canberra loss, the Eels have clearly failed themselves at multiple levels in Round 7. From the coaching and preparation, to the players failing to execute a straight forward but effective plan and the same holes in the roster fans have been banging on about...it has all added to another catastrophic breakdown. Sixties and Forty20 sift through the debris above and look to at how, if at all, the team can turn around for Round 8 where the take on the Sea Eagles at Brookvale.

After kicking off the NRL season in the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas, it was back to the less salubrious surrounds of Brookvale Oval for Manly. CEO Tony Mestrov is only too aware that for all the character the ground has it falls well short of what is required for an elite sporting venue. He squeezed into the commentary box with Andrew Moore and the team to talk about trying to develop the ground without government help. He also confirmed that the San Francisco 49ers have a real interest in investing in the club and that Manly would love to return to Vegas in 2025.

Does anxiety go hand-in-hand with creative ambition Psychologist Sanchana Venkatesh joins Ashley and James to discuss the positives of creativity for mental wellbeing and the common problem of creative anxiety. An emerging writer herself, she's familiar with the types of anxiety common to creatives. She delves into why we often can't just sit down and have fun with our creativity, provides advice on managing our creativity, and offers reading recommendations for further support. This episode is full of practical tips for managing creative anxiety (and anxiety in general), for creatives of all types, including those writing about or exploring trauma in their work. Sanchana Venkatesh is a psychologist and writer of short stories and essays.
