A Guiné-Bissau assinalou recentemente os 53 anos da proclamação unilateral da independência, em 24 de Setembro de 1973. Um momento que marcou a afirmação do país como Estado soberano perante a comunidade internacional. Mais de cinco décadas depois, o activista do movimento político Firkidja de Púbis, Yussef, considera que o país vive actualmente sob "uma ditadura militar" e defende "a mobilização dos guineenses para lutar contra o actual regime". Passados 53 anos da proclamação unilateral da independência, como caracteriza o actual momento político da Guiné-Bissau? Em 2026, a Guiné-Bissau vive uma ditadura militar. Nós temos as Forças Armadas da Guiné-Bissau, diria eu, mais as milícias que foram criadas pelo senhor Sissoco Embaló, que assumiram o controlo do Estado. Toda a estrutura do senhor Umaro Sissoco Embaló , seja militar, seja política, está neste momento no controlo do Estado da Guiné-Bissau. O objectivo é manter o povo da Guiné-Bissau num colete-de-forças, tendo como finalidade «pacificar» o país. Mas pacificar não no sentido de criar condições para o progresso, mas pacificar um pouco à laia do que os portugueses fizeram durante as primeiras décadas do século XX: pacificar para explorar, pacificar para oprimir. Umaro Sissoco Embaló anunciou que vai regressar ao país e que se vai candidatar às eleições presidenciais, que terão lugar no dia 6 de Dezembro. O antigo Presidente da Guiné-Bissau, que foi afastado do poder há quase um ano, na sequência de um golpe de Estado militar, assim o descreveu na altura. Ele tem condições para regressar ao país? Quem é que assegura esse regresso e quem são os aliados? É preciso ser rigoroso nos termos. Na Guiné-Bissau, em Novembro de 2025, não houve um golpe de Estado. Na verdade, houve um golpe de Estado contra a soberania popular. O que aconteceu foi um conluio entre o senhor Sissoco Embaló que se viu derrotado nas eleições presidenciais, e a entourage militar que sempre o apoiou. As milícias do Estado, encabeçadas pelo senhor Horta N'Tam e pelo senhor Tomás Djassi tomaram a si, perante a necessidade de dar um passo atrás, a teatralidade de mostrar à comunidade internacional que teria havido um golpe de Estado, para que os militares assumissem o poder e, durante este período de transição, modificassem a Constituição para que fosse ao encontro dos desejos do senhor Umaro Sissoco Embaló e das forças económicas nacionais e internacionais que o apoiam. Criou-se todo um teatro na Guiné-Bissau. E o senhor Embaló volta no sentido em que as condições objectivas foram garantidas para o seu regresso. Estamos a falar da modificação da Constituição e do novo simulacro de eleições que irá acontecer em Dezembro. Sissoco Embaló pode contar com o apoio do primeiro-ministro, Ilídio Vieira. e do general Horta N'Tam, Presidente de Transição da Guiné-Bissau? O primeiro-ministro da Guiné-Bissau, Ilídio Vieira, criou também um partido político, o Partido Popular Guineense. A criação deste partido pode mostrar uma ambição de também se apresentar às presidenciais? Eventualmente, sim. Não consigo dizer com toda a propriedade, porque não tenho as informações. Eu não faço parte da entourage do senhor Ilídio Vieira Té, até porque não conheço as suas intenções. Mas, repare: entre estes indivíduos, o que os motiva, na verdade, nem é propriamente um projecto de sociedade, uma ideologia ou, melhor dizendo, aquilo que os une é a ambição pessoal e a apropriação das riquezas da Guiné-Bissau. Então, é possível que, tendo em conta esta falta de unidade política e ideológica, esta falta de unidade ética ou moral, possa haver divergências no seu seio. Hoje pode-se acreditar que é o senhor Sissoco Embaló que está na dianteira; amanhã, por ambições, pode ser o senhor Ilídio Vieira Té; num outro dia, pode ser o senhor Tomás Djassi, no outro dia, também pode ser o senhor Horta N'Tam que acredita que, tendo em conta um conjunto de variáveis, tem mais condições para continuar no poder do que o senhor Sissoco Embaló na Guiné-Bissau. No país, há um grupo que quer o progresso, que quer realmente ir ao encontro do Programa Maior, que foi redigido durante a luta de libertação: desenvolvimento, saúde, educação, infra-estruturas, desenvolvimento do nosso potencial enquanto povo. E depois existe um outro grupo, do qual fazem parte, não obstante eventuais contradições que possam existir entre eles, o senhor Sissoco Embaló, o senhor Tomás Djassi, o senhor Horta N'Tam e até o senhor Nuno Nabian Quem é que lidera o grupo que quer o desenvolvimento do país? Aconteceram eleições em Novembro de 2025. A comunidade internacional sabe quem ganhou as eleições. Eles expressaram que o que aconteceu na Guiné-Bissau foi um falso golpe de Estado na sequência daquelas eleições. O povo da Guiné-Bissau escolheu um candidato como seu representante, independentemente das divergências que possam existir com esse mesmo candidato a nível de projecto de sociedade. O povo da Guiné-Bissau deve ser soberano. Aquilo pelo qual se deve lutar é pelo respeito pela decisão popular do povo da Guiné-Bissau neste momento da sua história política. E é a partir daí que nós devemos começar a luta política. Enquanto não existir esse respeito pela soberania do voto, pela soberania da decisão popular, eu creio que nós estamos, ao fim e ao cabo, perante uma grande fábula. O líder da oposição da Guiné-Bissau, Domingos Simões Pereira, actualmente em Lisboa, considerou o anúncio do regresso de Sissoco Embaló “chocante” e motivo de “inquietação”, questionando se existem garantias de igualdade e de segurança para todos os participantes no processo eleitoral. O senhor considera que essas garantias são para todos? Evidentemente que não. Criou-se na Guiné-Bissau, de uma forma explícita, uma situação de excepção, em que existe esta ideia de que o Estado são estes senhores. Não existe lei na Guiné-Bissau neste momento. A Constituição que foi aprovada, na verdade, é um mero papel, porque não existe qualquer legitimidade. O referendo que aconteceu recentemente não pode ser chamado referendo. Aquilo é um simulacro, porque não existiam pré-requisitos. Ou seja, nós estamos numa situação de excepção. Não existe actividade política na Guiné-Bissau. Ou, pelo menos, a oposição não pode exercer qualquer actividade política. Como é que vamos falar seriamente de eleições, de referendo, de reconciliação, se não existem essas prerrogativas mínimas de um debate político na Guiné-Bissau? Mas a oposição será capaz de se unir para estas eleições? Domingos Simões Pereira pode contar com o apoio de quem? Onde é que se vai posicionar Fernando Dias? Não lhe consigo dizer de forma cabal. Eu creio que o fundamental é encarar a situação de frente. Isto é: existe, neste momento, um poder militar na Guiné-Bissau. Um poder bélico. Estão fortemente armados e colocaram um colete-de-forças no povo da Guiné-Bissau. Colocaram o povo da Guiné-Bissau numa grande prisão a céu aberto. E, perante esta situação concreta, objectiva, é preciso que a oposição se organize para lutar de forma consequente contra esta situação. Não me parece que a retórica possa resolver este conflito, tão-pouco. Penso que as eleições, tendo em conta o contexto que existe na Guiné-Bissau, não poderão resolver este conflito. Quais são as garantias de credibilidade e transparência do acto eleitoral, quando a Comissão Nacional de Eleições é constituída, na maioria, por membros do Conselho Nacional de Transição? O Supremo Tribunal de Justiça da Guiné-Bissau é um órgão que está ao serviço do regime. A Comissão Nacional de Eleições, idem, aspas. Os militares têm armas e não só assassinam activistas na Guiné-Bissau, como, por exemplo, o nosso irmão e camarada Vigário Balanta, como aprisionam líderes da oposição, como, por exemplo, aconteceu com o senhor Domingos Simões Pereira. Apropriam-se das sedes dos partidos políticos da oposição, não permitem que os sindicatos exerçam a sua tarefa e não permitem qualquer liberdade de expressão no país. Perante estas condições, podemos falar de eleições livres, democráticas e transparentes? Obviamente que não. Aquilo de que, na minha óptica, a oposição tem de se consciencializar é que, perante esta força, somente uma força social maior pode colocar em causa o estado de coisas.Isso implica, forçosamente, não obstante as dificuldades, a organização popular, a mobilização popular e, ao mesmo tempo, convocar solidariedades internacionais para lutar, de facto, contra este regime.

Caroline and Allison return from a summer hiatus and welcome Juliana Pereira, co-author of Pivot Quest, after attending her talk with co-author Luis at Hummingbird Books in Chestnut Hill, moderated by Caroline. Juliana explains she met Luis while working at a business school during a rebranding project, then later partnered with him after he proposed a “Duolingo of career pivoting” concept. She describes three years of research interviewing 100+ career pivoters across 25 countries, finding that pivots are typically triggered by life events (divorce, loss, layoffs, moves) and often accompanied by bodily stress signals, anxiety, and identity fears. Key themes include that people never start from scratch, pivots build on existing skills and community, and success comes from curiosity and not defining oneself by a job title, illustrated by an 83-year-old with 16 pivots.
