Breakfast All Day

All treats and no tricks for you in this packed Halloween edition of Breakfast All Day. Here's what we've got: NOUVELLE VAGUE: Richard Linklater recreates the making of the French New Wave classic "Breathless" with a movie that looks like it could have come out in 1960, as well. You don't need to know anything about Jean-Luc Godard, or Jean Seberg, or Jean-Paul Belmondo to enjoy this affectionate and humorous homage, but there are Easter eggs galore if you do. In theaters before streaming on Netflix Nov 14. SHELBY OAKS (With William Bibbiani): Our good friend Bibbs joins in on a review of this horror debut from longtime YouTube film critic Chris Stuckmann. It follows a woman investigating the disappearance of her sister, who was a paranormal investigator, in a small Ohio town. In theaters. HEDDA: Tessa Thompson is impossibly charismatic in this bold reimagining of the classic Henrik Ibsen play "Hedda Gabler." Nia DaCosta's adaptation is queer and multiracial in ways that are reminiscent of "Bridgerton." The cinematography and production design are gorgeous, but see it for the clothes alone. Streaming on Prime Video. IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT: This will end up being a major contender in the awards conversation. Iranian master Jafar Panahi tells the story of several disparate people who come together to abduct and confront the man they believe was their torturer in prison. It's tense and beautifully acted, with an unexpected streak of absurd humor. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE!: Our travels have kept us from doing our movie news livestream for the past couple weeks, so it was nice to be together again. Among the topics we discussed were the upcoming "Stranger Things" finale, "Sinners" and "K-Pop Demon Hunters" back in theaters, Osgood Perkins Day, and Francis Ford Coppola auctioning off his watch collection. We're gone next week but back Nov. 14. Thanks for being here! Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/

We're continuing to blaze a trail through the many, many movies opening on October 10 here at Breakfast All Day.  Earlier this week, we reviewed TRON: ARES, A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE and KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN. Today, we discussed: ROOFMAN: Channing Tatum is ridiculously charming as a robber who escapes from prison and hides inside a Toys "R" Us store for six months. This actually happened. We enjoyed Tatum's performance, and the cast is strong, but the tone is off from indie director Derek Cianfrance. In theaters. URCHIN: Harris Dickinson makes an auspicious filmmaking debut with this gritty and intimate tale of addiction. Dickinson writes, directs and has a small supporting role, but Frank Dillane is the star as a young man trying to get clean but getting in his own way. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! This was a lengthy one since we took last week off and there's so much to discuss. Among this week's topics were "Marty Supreme," the Riyadh Comedy Festival, the Melania Trump documentary, Rush reuniting with a new drummer, and the Smashing Pumpkins smoothie at Erewhon. We're hoping to go live again next Friday, so stay tuned for details. Thanks for being with us during this busy time! Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie meet cute at a wedding, then get stuck on a magical realist road trip in a rented Saturn where they must return to pivotal moments from their pasts. We're here to provide a little distraction -- and a positive online community during these weird times -- with the latest episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast. Our first movie isn't exactly escapist fun, though: "The Long Walk," which is one of the better Stephen King adaptations. It's beautifully written and acted but also harrowing to watch, especially now. This may not be the best week to see people getting shot in the head, but this movie is really good otherwise. In theaters. Next up, it's "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues," the painfully unfunny sequel to the 1984 comedy classic "This Is Spinal Tap." It would be impossible to match the brilliance of a movie that invented an entire genre, but this one really doesn't. Rob Reiner, Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer are all back, along with some major celebrity cameos. In theaters. If you're looking for elegant pleasures, we have "Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale." Everyone's lives are in flux in 1930s England, but they look great doing it. And despite their financial woes, they find time to get gussied up for the horse races at Ascot. This tidies up all the stories in satisfying fashion. In theaters. September's going to be a busy month, we can tell already. We took a week off at the end of the summer but we're coming in hot to start the fall here at Breakfast All Day. Supposedly "The Conjuring: Last Rites" is the final film in the franchise -- it says so right there in the title! -- but nothing ever really ends. This is once again the scariest case Ed and Lorraine Warren have ever taken, something to do with a haunted mirror. You've seen it all before, but Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are committed to the bit as always. In theaters. Then we review both Spike Lee's "Highest 2 Lowest" and Akira Kurosawa's "High and Low," the 1963 film that inspired it. The new one stars Denzel Washington as a music industry titan fighting a kidnapping scheme; Toshiro Mifune played a shoe company executive in the original. They have similar bones but are extremely different in how they tell their stories. The Kurosawa film is one of his greats, and Lee's latest is his most purely entertaining movie in a while. (At least one of us thought so.) You can catch "Highest 2 Lowest" on Apple TV+, while "High and Low" is on HBO Max and The Criterion Channel. Finally, we did a lengthy Movie News LIVE! Take us with you for one last beach trip before summer ends here at Breakfast All Day. It's sort of an Arthouse Tuesday on a Friday with the mix of movie reviews we have for you. We begin with "Honey Don't," Ethan Coen's second solo outing without brother Joel. We both love the Coens, but we don't really agree on this. Margaret Qualley stars as a lesbian private eye investigating a suspicious car accident in Bakersfield, California. Aubrey Plaza, Chris Evans and Charlie Day co-star. In theaters. Next is "Splitsville," which we both loved. It's an indie rom-com focusing on two married couples and their twisted, intertwined lives. The understated meanness is delightful, but there's a vulnerability underneath. Dakota Johnson, Adria Arjona, Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin star. Covino directed from a script he and Marvin co-wrote. In theaters. Then we turn to the Devo documentary, titled appropriately, "Devo." If you love the '80s new wave band, you'll appreciate this breezy but super informative look at how they came together and created their signature look and sound. Plus the music is so great: Both of us feel lucky to have seen Devo in concert, and you should definitely check them out live if you can. Streaming on Netflix. Finally, it was a lengthy Movie News LIVE!, as we discussed the dismaying state of film journalism. Plus: sing-along "KPop Demon Hunters," Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein," and we remember the legendary Terence Stamp, who died this week at 87. Until then, you can catch it streaming and catch up with our catch-up review. We also review "Nobody 2," the sequel to the 2021 action comedy "Nobody." Bob Odenkirk returns with his particular set of skills, but all he wants to do is enjoy a quiet vacation with his family. In theaters. We did Movie News LIVE! for a second week in a row. Lots to discuss as always, including the trailer for "Marty Supreme," Park Chan-wook, Tom Cruise and more. Join us on Fridays at Noon Pacific. And finally, it's our "Weapons" LIVE spoiler chat. We're placing this at the end in case you haven't seen the movie yet and don't want to hear us get into it. And we do get into it. Thanks for being here! A wide range of reviews, plus we're delighted to be back with movie news, on this week's Breakfast All Day podcast. We begin with a movie that we know so many of you are excited about: "Weapons," writer-director Zach Cregger's follow-up to "Barbarian" from 2022. This is a spoiler-free review, because one of the best parts of "Weapons" is not knowing anything about "Weapons." Just trust us when we tell you it's nuts, and you should see it. We'll have a LIVE spoiler chat at our YouTube channel at Noon Pacific time on Tuesday, Aug. 12, so come back then and we'll get into it. In theaters. Next up is a movie the whole family can see and enjoy: "Freakier Friday," which comes 22 years after "Freaky Friday," which was itself a remake of the 1976 Disney favorite. Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are back for more body-swap shenanigans. We laughed a lot more than we expected. The pacing is lively and the cast is game. In theaters. Then we catch up with the documentary "Billy Joel: And So It Goes," which we missed when it came out because we were both traveling. This is a two-part, five-hour exploration of this enduring musical artist, and it will make you appreciate Joel's songs on a deeper level. So many hits, and the stories behind them are fascinating. Streaming on HBO Max. Finally, it's our first Movie News LIVE! in a long time. Lots to talk about, including "The Wizard of Oz" at Sphere in Las Vegas, "Hamilton" playing in theaters, Dean Cain trying to be an ICE agent and more. We promise to be more consistent with these now that we're both back in town. Join Wolfie on Forest Fan TV for a sizzling breakdown of the latest Nottingham Forest transfer news, headlined by the official announcement of Brazilian striker Igor Jesus joining from Botafogo on a four-year deal! Wolfie dives into what this exciting signing means for Nuno Espirito Santo's squad, with the 23-year-old forward bringing his goal-scoring prowess to the City Ground after an impressive stint in Brazil. As Forest gear up for the Premier League and Europa Conference League, Wolfie discusses how Igor Jesus could ignite the Reds' attack alongside stars like Chris Wood and Callum Hudson-Odoi. Jump into the live chat and share your excitement for this new addition to the Garibaldi Red! The transfer saga surrounding Anthony Elanga is heating up, with Newcastle United pushing hard to secure the Swedish winger for a reported £55m, potentially rising to £60m, after Forest rejected an earlier £45m bid. Wolfie provides the latest updates on this blockbuster move, analyzing whether Evangelos Marinakis will hold firm on Forest's £65m valuation or cash in on the 23-year-old, who delivered six goals and 11 assists last season. With Elanga's pace and creativity vital to Forest's seventh-place finish, Wolfie debates the impact of his potential departure and how Nuno might reshape the squad. Let us know in the chat—should Forest keep Elanga or take the money to reinvest? If Elanga does leave, Forest are reportedly eyeing PSV's 22-year-old winger Johan Bakayoko as a prime replacement, with the Belgian star drawing interest from Borussia Dortmund and other Premier League clubs. Wolfie explores how Bakayoko's flair and goal-scoring ability could seamlessly fill Elanga's boots, maintaining Forest's attacking dynamism. Alongside other transfer rumours, including links to Lyon's Malick Fofana, Wolfie breaks down the latest gossip and what it means for Forest's ambitions in the Premier League and Europe. Join Wolfie on Forest Fan TV for a live transfer update show, bringing you all the latest Nottingham Forest news! First up, a potential hiccup in the £30m deal for Botafogo defender Jair Cunha, with reports suggesting the 20-year-old Brazilian wants to stay at his current club, and now Real Madrid have entered the fray with interest in the youngster. Wolfie dissects whether this could derail Forest's plans or if a loan-back option might keep the transfer alive, especially after Cunha's standout Club World Cup performances. Next, the saga of Anthony Elanga's potential move to Newcastle United takes a new turn, with reports today indicating the Magpies might include Harvey Barnes as a makeweight to sweeten the deal. Some sources suggest Newcastle could sell Barnes separately or propose a swap, with Elanga's £50m valuation being a sticking point after Forest rejected a £35m bid last year. Wolfie breaks down the implications of losing Elanga, his six goals and 11 assists this season, and whether Barnes—a proven Premier League winger with nine goals last term—could be a fair trade or a smart addition to the squad. Join the live chat and share your thoughts on these breaking developments—can Forest hold onto Cunha despite Real Madrid's interest, and should they accept a Barnes deal for Elanga? With the transfer window buzzing and Forest gearing up for Europe, Wolfie explores how these moves could shape Nuno Espírito Santo's team. This is a non-spoiler review, but we're doing a live spoiler chat at our YouTube channel on Wednesday, June 25 at Noon Pacific, so check back with us then and share your thoughts. In theaters now. Then we catch up with the two films that preceded it: "28 Days Later" (2002) and "28 Weeks Later" (2007). We realized in retrospect that you don't need to have seen either of these movies to get into the new one, but we were glad to have the conversations. If you're looking for something a little more lighthearted for the whole family, there's "Elio," the latest animated adventure from Disney Pixar.
