No subscription, no additional purchase necessary, just enter the word podcast, and save 2 bucks. Thank you for your support! Today's story is from the creator of the Fu-Manchu series, Sax Rohmer. It was originally titled, The Brood of the Witch-Queen. I think that the unfortunate title is the reason that this book is not more well know today. That, and the ending isn't super great. Just putting that out there right now. But H.P. Lovecraft compared this book with Bram Stoker's Dracula, and many critics of the time considered it one of Rohmer's best. I've taken the liberty of releasing it as Knight of the Necropolis. Hopefully ol' Sax isn't turning too much in his grave at that. One of the things that really draws me to classic Halloween monsters is that they are steeped in literature. Obviously, Dracula and Frankenstein immediately come to mind with their respective baddies. There are many werewolf short stories, from Kipling's The Mark of the Beast, to Murryat's The White Wolf of the Harz Mountains. Alexandre Dumas even wrote a full length, lack luster novel about a werewolf, clumsily translated as The Wolf Leader. I'm told Steinbeck also wrote a werewolf yarn. Mummy tales also abound in short fiction. Among the best are Conan Doyle's Lot No. 249, Louisa May Alcott's The Ring of Thoth, and H.P. Lovecraft's Imprisoned with the Pharaohs. Among the less successful is Bram Stoker's novel Jewel of the Seven Stars. Now, today's story isn't perfect by any means. It's not high literature. But when I read it, I felt that it really delivered the same feeling that I get when I watch the original movie of The Mummy, with Boris Karloff. It's set up as a series of adventures where we can eventually piece together the identity of that devotee of ancient sorcery: Antony Ferrara. The similarities to Dracula are evident. Nobody believes in Egyptian sorcery, there's only one scholar who's studied enough to stop him, etc.. But what can I say, when it comes to magic rings, brain-eating beetles, vampires, ancient curses, Egyptian mummies, and the like, I'm always up for it. I hope you are, too. Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Tatiana created a website sharing coping tools to improve mental health. More about Tatiana: Hi my name is Tatiana Torres and I am currently in 12th grade ! I have been doing Girl Scouts for a long time, ever since Kindergarten. I was with Troop 32204 from Kindergarten to 8th grade, then went on to join Troop 31862 from 9th to now. I started my Gold Award in the beginning of Junior year and I completed my Gold Award at the end of Junior year. I was super excited to have an outlet to show what I am passionate about. Having a brain injury during my teen years opened the conversation of mental health in my household. I have learned so much in the last 4 years during therapy. Instead of waiting to magically get better, I wanted to do something with my story. So, when I heard about the Gold Award, I wanted to talk about mental health and my own story. Going into my Senior year after doing this project, made me realize the opportunities I can now make on my own, instead of waiting for an opportunity to open up for me. My goal for the next year is to go to college, be an advocate for mental health, human rights, and the environment. I want to help as many people as I can, so I will start one step at a time. https://sites.google.com/view/calm4you/home https://youtube.com/channel/UC4jsBVkA-fQE8q6jYOCEaCQ Join our Facebook Community https://www.facebook.com/sherylmrobinson/ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/sherylmrobinson/?hl=en Please subscribe to Hearts of Gold on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/sherylmrobinsonor on your favorite podcast app. Support future Hearts of Gold episodes at https://www.patreon.com/heartsofgold Editing by https://www.offthewalter.com/ Walter's YouTube channel is https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt0wFZRVaOpUd_nXc_8-4yQ

Quote “Sometimes I try to be normal but it gets boring so I go back to being me.” Mediaweapps.com Welcome to the Sensory Strides podcast.  Observations of the world through activity, reading, listening, and everything else. I started training for the end of October 10k this week!  It feels great to be following a training plan again, although I really miss sitting on the couch doing nothing.  I've pushed myself to actually run doing the workouts.  While I can't run for a full mile yet, I look forward to continuing to push myself.  I was inspired by a recent Another Mother Runner discussing racing mindset to push a bit harder than I have historically.  For me, it has always been about finishing.  I think I may use this fall's race to push myself and challenge myself to not be the last one in. AMR Trains #38 How to Get Into a Racing Mindset (anothermotherrunner.com) It was a busy Girl Scout week.  Tuesday, I had a meeting with council, then I got in my car and had a troop meeting while I drove to a Gold Award project ribbon cutting.  After the ribbon cutting on the way home I had a highest awards sub committee meeting.  Then Thursday it was our council's annual meeting.  Council just moved into a new building, and we were able to tour the building before the annual meeting.  It is going to be a great programming space.  End of August is also a busy time for Girl Scouts as girls are submitting their final reports prior to school starting.  We've had an influx of proposals too.  Looking forward to growing our Gold Award class for next spring! We also went to the La Crosse Area Parade of Homes.  Very excited to find a house that was painted a grey we liked.  We also found a cabinet color we like and decide white trim will be the way to go. I am getting so excited to move into the new space. Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Madalyn championed STEM Diversity by addressing girls' underrepresentation and minorities in STEM. More about Madalyn: Madalyn Nguyen, a rising senior at Poway High School (PHS) Engineering Academy, is a STEM enthusiast, FIRST Robotics fanatic, and aspiring engineer or computer scientist. Getting a Mindstorm Robot in 5th grade ignited her love for robotics and desire to join every FIRST Robotics program possible: FIRST Lego League (6th grade), FIRST Tech Challenge & SWENext (7th grade) and FIRST Robotics Competition-Team Spyder (experienced/motivated 8th grader). Seeing that girls were minorities on her robotics team, she founded the Society of Women Engineers and National Center for Women and Information Technology Clubs to create a community that encourages girls, especially minority girls, to join robotics. The purpose of the clubs is to support, promote, give opportunities for advancement, and empower girls in STEM to pursue careers in engineering. Madalyn champions for STEM Diversity, especially for the underrepresented and disadvantaged, by volunteering over 200 hours of outreach per year since 2016 and is a 4 time recipient of the President's Volunteer Service Gold Award. During the fall FLL season you can find her mentoring about 10 FIRST Robotics teams locally and globally. Her greatest accomplishment is starting a FIRST Robotics program at Wilson Middle School in the low socioeconomic community City Heights in San Diego, California where 100% of the student body receives free or reduced lunch. Wilson Robotics increased participation by 300% and now has female representation of 30 % from zero participation. With her continued mentorship and support in procuring funding, Wilson Robotics is thriving going into their next season. In 2019, she traveled to Paraguay to advance STEM/Robotics Education and women in engineering and Sacramento for political advocacy with Senator Brian Jones and Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. She pays it forward by being a passionate FIRST Youth mentor & volunteer for FLL, FRC, FTC, FGC and a robot judge for FLL. She was last year's Chief Project Officer, where she oversaw the building and programming of 120 lbs robots and managed 15 subteam leads. She is currently Team Spyder Co-President, PHS Titan Ambassador (selected exclusively by teachers to represent her high school), and Poway Unified School District Career Technical Education Ambassador. Madalyn is a changemaker and trailblazer by making a difference in thousands of youths locally and globally. For her commitment to STEM Diversity, she is the recipient of the FIRST Dean's List Award 2020, the highest honor bestowed to an individual in FIRST Robotics for leadership and advancement of FIRST's mission. She was one of 10 winners selected from 3400 nominees worldwide for this prestigious award. Even after receiving her Gold Award in April 2020, she continues to advance STEM Diversity. During the pandemic, she organized a virtual 7 weekly STEM Career Series which impacted over 700 attendees worldwide and organized and moderated a two-day Women in STEM forum with over 300 attendees. She also helped create PPE and sneeze guards for local health providers. In addition, she created and organized a virtual Global Engineering Challenge where 65 teams participated worldwide. Overall, she is an amazing & inspiring role model. She often speaks at events and was the keynote speaker for the SWE Conference in San Diego in Feb 2020. Even though Madalyn is just a rising senior in high school, you will not find a more hard-working & dedicated champion for STEM diversity. She is truly a rockstar for STEM! Quote “Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude.” Denis Waitley Welcome to the Sensory Strides podcast.  Observations of the world through activity, reading, listening, and everything else. I have felt most like myself in the past week or so than I have in a long time.  I had two great conversations with Gold Award Girl Scouts for my other show.  (Ep 64) One had such high energy and everything related to her project involved bright colors.  It was just so fun!  (Ep 65) The other was with a young women I have been following for a couple of years.  Her focus is STEM diversity and she is always involved in some activity related to STEM.  Her Instagram makes me tired just looking at it. https://pod.link/1406353288 https://www.youtube.com/c/sherylmrobinson I even had a last minute project that I successfully completed.  Girl Scouts has implemented a scholarship program for Gold Award Girl Scouts and a couple of days before it kicked off I received the details on which girls were eligible and we had four (out of our fourteen) that needed work in order to make sure they were eligible.  Two were easy because the system dates just needed to be corrected, but the other two required the girls to submit both their proposal and final report via the Go Gold electronic system.  Getting this report through the electronic system involved four different people and 8 steps.  Luckily we were all able to work together and get the Girl Scouts successfully set up.  The timing also worked well because the application process opened last week with the applications due this week and we have a already scheduled Highest Awards Q&A session scheduled.  We are pivoting and making that session a scholarship FAQ session for the girls. Then, I also received an email that a conference I have been very excited about attending has selected me to be a speaker on a panel.  I was already expecting this conference to be a highlight of my year and now that I will be involved even more my excitement has skyrocketed.  I can't share much about this yet, but I will be soon because it is a group I am already passionate about. Thanks for joining me.  Be sure to check our show notes for links to inspiration items and …  don't forget to stop and smell the roses. Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Sharing about the different adult recognitions offered by Girl Scouts. Receiving the Thanks Badge II this week was a huge honor for me. However, I realized that so many people do not understand the Girl Scout Adult Recognitions that are available. AS a member of out council's Adult Recognition Committee, the biggest effort we make is educating about the awards and encouraging others to nominate volunteers. Our council has worked to make the nomination process as simple as possible and we were able to grow the number of nominations received, but I know other councils receive so many nominations that the bulk of the work is reviewing and nominations to select those to recognize each year. The GSUSA awards include: Volunteer of Excellence: any volunteer working with girls Appreciation Pin: Volunteer contributing to a geographic area - this may mean a community or service unit, more than a single troop Honor Pin: Volunteer contributing to two or more geographic areas, similar to the appreciation pin, but serving a larger area Thanks Badge: Volunteer contributing to the entire council or movement with Thanks Badge II for someone that has received the Thanks Badge and continues to expand their work President's Award: This award is for a group. At our council, this is often given to a group that creates a new girl experience. GSUSA Adult Award Description and Criteria (girlscoutshs.org) Councils often have special recognitions. Make sure to check out your council's website to find out what their process is and what other recognitions may be available. I encourage everyone to consider nominating someone that has done something that has caught your attention. When nominating, my strongest suggestion is to make sure to share a personal story and share how the actions are above and beyond. Help the reviewers get to know the nominee's personality and the special work they do which deserves the recognition. All volunteers are important and likely deserve recognition. Encourage others, especially the girls, to nominate those you identify too. Multiple stories help strengthen the nomination and help your volunteer rise to the top of the process. The nomination process for the girls could be wrapped into a badge work or journey related to story telling or writing. For my nomination, this show, along with the speaking engagements I have been doing to promote the Gold Award were some of the basis for my nomination. Feedback from the girls on the impact the show had on them supported the nomination. Here is a link to a document on how to write a strong nomination: Adult Award Nomination and Endorsement Letter Examples V2.pdf (gsofsi.org) Ideas for nominations: Instead of 'she is a great cookie coordinator', share a story of how her cookie organizational skills helped girls step beyond their goals or what unique spin they put on cookie sales. For their cookie booth, they had the girls create a recipe cards using Girl Scout cookies the girls then gave to people as they walked into the grocery store. The sales at the cookie booth were double from the year before at the same location. Instead of "they put on a great day camp", have the girls share how the day camp theme impacted them to achieve something else on a related topic; or how they got six businesses in town to participate in the day camp; or how they expanded the day camp from a community event to a regional event. This example is a great opportunity to use numbers in you story. Last year this day camp had 30 girls attend, by meeting with six local businesses to gain additional support and getting the day camp flyers out two months earlier than normal and including all the schools in the county, this year's day camp served 120 girls. Don't forget the behind the scenes volunteers. Those that support your troop, service unit, or take action projects. XYZ farm assisted with connecting us to different women in the farming industry to create an event where 8 different careers were represented and girls had the opportunity to tour the working farm. We were able to open the event up to the entire county and had 50 girls attend. Plans are already underway to expand next year and offer the event council wide. TRADE SHOWS FROM ONE COUNTRY TO THE NEXT - SECOND EDITION by Larry Kulchawik "Trade Shows from One Country to the Next" delves into international marketing, with a focus specifically on global trade show differences and distinctions. Rather than concentrate on details about marketing per se, this book focuses on the needed adjustments-mental, physically and otherwise-when marketing a product/service through tradeshows from one country to the next. Although dedicated to trade show exhibit architecture and behavior, much of the information contained in this book also speaks to effective communication skills required when spending a week or less marketing a product in a foreign country. After forty-three years in the international trade show arena, the author shares his thoughts and the comments obtained from world-wide experts in the countries outlined. No one person or company is the expert everywhere in the world. There is no right way or wrong way-there is only a different way. This book will appeal to not only exhibit managers, show organizers, venues, and exhibit suppliers, but to those who market anything on a global scale. Effective communication is key! Larry Kulchawik has dedicated his entire career to exhibit design at trade shows internationally. His recent book, "Trade Shows from One Country to the Next" he outlines venues, regulations, exhibit styles, and cultural differences when exhibiting in 45 different countries. The books theme...There is no right way, there is no wrong way, there is only a different way. Know and respect what is different to reach success through trade shows, or any other form of face to face communication to promote a product or service internationally. While earning a degree in Design at Southern Illinois University, Larry Kulchawik had the privilege to study under Buckminster Fuller. Geodesic domes and Spaceship Earth concept influenced his thinking in so many ways he never thought to be relevant at the time. Starting as an exhibit designer, Kulchawik has spent his entire career in the exhibit industry for the past 43 years. He has worked for three of the leading exhibit companies in the USA in management and sales with a focus on international trade show marketing. He served on the boards of many industry associations (CEIR,OSPI, WTC) and as president for IFES (International Federation of Exposition Services) and EDPA (Exhibit Designer and Producers Association). As president of EDPA he assisted to launch the first masters degree program in exhibit design at FIT/NYC, and led a task force to create UL2301- Standards for Safety when building trade show exhibits with Underwriters Laboratory. He has been awarded two of the industries highest honors- the Hazel Hays Award (EDPA), and the Roger Taurant Award (IFES) for his contributions to the exhibit industry. His book has earned two Gold Awards from MarCom 2016, and Hermes 2017 for creative marketing in the book category. “At this stage of my life I wish to give back and share international experiences and uncover this exciting career we call trade show marketing. Being involved with IFES ( Global exhibit suppliers from 44 countries) I have met many trusted suppliers I consider friends and partners. They are each the source of knowledge and understanding for effective global marketing. Recalculating your thinking when exhibiting from one country to the next is key to achieving sales success in each country. The theme of the book- there is no right way, there is no wrong way, there is only a different way. Being sensitive, and recognizing what is different, and why, will insure success and will keep you from unexpected surprises.”. Connecting the world with a shared sensitivity about face to face business communication will cultivate our mutual desires for positive branding and increased sales in a global market.” The world of international trade as we know it is rapidly changing. https://www.amazon.com/Trade-Shows-One-Country-Next/dp/1681393336/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1619196132&sr=8-1 http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/lkulchawikec.mp3

Bucks County Bytes brings to you photographer Jeff Weiser and the story behind his love of photography and The Iron Triangle. I have always been in love with the camera and capturing the moments of places, people, and landscapes, and Jeff's images lure me to who is behind the camera and the stunning landscapes that he captures, but it the people's faces that fascinate me. A face has mystery, a story, as the eyes and expression are beyond what words can sometimes measure. Listen in as Jeff Weiser talks about who he is, how it started, and tells us about the Iron Triangle...a place I never knew existed until now. Let the story capture your imagination of what life is like in a place that New York tends to forget about. The Iron Triangle is also known as the Valley of Ashes from The Great Gatsby. The Iron Triangle is encompassed in acres of auto repair shops, salvage yards, and abandoned stolen cars that have been picked clean. This is the gray and dirty part of Queens that you drive through to get from Long Island to NYC. Jeff says that people in the photos that he captured enjoyed having their pictures taken and took the time to talk and tell him a bit about their lives. They know him as “the guy with the camera”.  Jeff does make a point of returning and giving them copies of their photos. We definitely had a great talk on the podcast as I was intrigued by his ability to be in The Iron Triangle and capture these moments... The podcast cover is "Javier's Yard" and is currently featured in Black & White Magazine at the time of the interview.  It also won in the photo contest "Looking Back Looking Forward" as it is a part of a series that Jeff has been working on for the past year, Faces of the Iron Triangle. When you go to Jeff Weiser's website you will also see "Man of Faith" that took a Gold Award in the Tokyo International Foto Awards this year. Susan has had a number of highly successful restaurants across southern California and in Las Vegas and authored six cookbooks over her forty-year career. You’ve seen her on Top Chef Masters and on Food Network’s “Too Hot Tamales.” Susan is a great example of someone who extends her personal brand through everything she does, how she dresses and how she runs her company. Guest Bio Iconic culinarian, author, and entrepreneur may be best known for her Modern Mexican concept, Border Grill restaurants, trucks, and catering, which she runs with her business partner of more than 35 years, Mary Sue Milliken. Now with locations in Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Downtown LA, LAX Airport, The Huntington Library, and Rose Bowl, Border Grill continues to serve street food-inspired regional Mexican cuisine with a commitment to sustainability and the best quality ingredients. In June 2018, Feniger and Milliken debuted BBQ Mexicana, a fast casual eatery with locations at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Las Vegas Ballpark, and most recently inside the new Allegiant Stadium. The chefs returned to Santa Monica with Socalo, an all-day California canteen and Mexican Pub, in December 2019. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in New York, she made a groundbreaking move in joining the nearly all-male kitchen at Chicago’s Le Perroquet, serendipitously meeting the only other woman in the kitchen—Mary Sue Milliken. After working for Wolfgang Puck at Ma Maison in L.A., Feniger went to the French Riviera to further hone her skills, and returned to open City Café with Milliken in 1981, forever changing L.A.’s culinary landscape by introducing eclectic dishes from around the world. That evolved into the larger CITY Restaurant in 1985—and the introduction of Border Grill as a simple spot for authentic home cooking and street foods of Mexico informed by the duo’s treks through the country. A James Beard Award that same year confirmed their impact on the nation’s cuisine. Feniger and Milliken brought their innovative approaches to The Food Network with nearly 400 episodes of the “Too Hot Tamales” and “Tamales World Tour” series. They also were the original co-hosts of the popular food-centric radio show, KCRW’s “Good Food,” in L.A. Susan has co-authored six cookbooks, including Susan Feniger’s Street Food and competed on Bravo’s “Top Chef Masters” in 2010. In 2018, Feniger and Milliken were named the recipients of the fourth annual Julia Child Award from The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts, marking the first women to be honored. The distinction complements additional accolades, including the Elizabeth Burns Lifetime Achievement Award from the California Restaurant Association in 2013; earned induction into Menu Masters Hall of Fame in 2014; and the 2018 Gold Award from the Los Angeles Times for culinary excellence and innovation in Southern California. Feniger is an active member of the community, and currently sits on the boards of the Scleroderma Research Foundation, L.A. LGBT Center, and L.A. Tourism & Conventions; works closely with Women Chefs and Restaurateurs, Share Our Strength, and Human Rights Campaign; and co-founded Chefs Collaborative. Educate Your Clients Jennifer comes from an educational background, and it plays a huge role in the way she maintains relationships and provides service to her clients.
