Anson Frericks, former President for Anheuser-Busch, joins the show to detail how Bud Light - an iconic American brand of a company once commanded almost 50% of the American Beer market - imploded with one WOKE decision In his new book " Last call for Bud Light" Anson details time after time, opportunity after opportunity, Anheuser-Busch passed upon growth and stability in favor of cost cutting and chaos. Only now does it seem that the company is regaining his footing. Anson advocates openly that the only way to truly save this once great company is to return it to its American roots with American ownership. This past summer, we visited Indianapolis for the first time and thanks to reddit recommendations for the best haze in the city, the only brewery in town we hit was Guggman Haus. We enjoyed it so much that we had to get the folks behind the brewery on the pod! Derek and Courtney joined Cee to chat about their lengthy and rocky journey to opening the brewery, the impact their time in Germany had on their approach to their beer, the scene in Indiana, how they leveraged the full real estate of their property to get open sooner, why they turned their old brewery into a cafe, how they opened their second location, the Indy 500 and the impact on the city, their recent equipment upgrade, and why they don't really do much distro. They got into four fantastic Guggman Haus beers - Wilburs Prize Pils American Pilsner, The Riverside New England IPA, Guggenweizen Hefeweizen, and Into The Wild Sour (Strawberry, Raspberry and Blueberry). This was fascinating - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

In the ever-evolving world of beer, maintaining a competitive edge can feel like navigating a stormy sea. Dan Kopman, former CEO of Heavy Seas and co-founder of Schlafly Beer, provides a seasoned perspective on the complexities and potential of the brewing industry."Early mover advantage is a double-edged sword," Kopman observes, a note of caution in his voice. "It's easy to gain but terribly difficult to maintain." This concept, familiar across various industries, holds particular resonance in the dynamic sphere of craft beer. Companies like Schlafly and Heavy Seas have ridden the initial waves of advantage, setting precedents in the market long before competitors caught wind. However, the real battle lies in sustaining that lead amid a burgeoning crowd of innovative brewers.Kopman's journey is marked by his significant roles in shaping the beer industry. Notably, he was instrumental in offering acclaimed beers like Young's Pubs' unique brews in London and Schlafly Beer in St. Louis. His broad experience fuels his understanding of the intricate dance between early adoption and lasting impact.Interestingly, the conversation isn't confined to traditional beer alone. Kopman acknowledges the rising influence of non-alcoholic (NA) beer, a niche that's garnering substantial attention. "Non-alcoholic beer has low penetration in the US compared to other regions," he notes. "But the global growth rate is in the high single digits." This trend suggests an emerging market ripe with possibilities for brewers willing to innovate and cater to changing consumer preferences.Kopman's insights also extend to broader demographic shifts and their impact on beer consumption. The interplay between immigration patterns and beer sales, for example, underscores the importance of understanding and addressing diverse consumer bases. "Brewers need to broaden their appeal," he advises, highlighting the necessity for cultural inclusivity in marketing strategies. Moreover, Kopman emphasizes the significance of strategic collaborations and experiential learning. At American University's Kogod School of Business, students engage in capstone projects that transition them into budding consultants. A notable collaboration with Right Proper Brewing Company in DC exemplifies how such partnerships can foster growth and innovation within the industry.Reflecting on market disruptions, Kopman draws a parallel between the beer industry and the tech world. "Consider the iPhone," he says. "It wasn't the first smartphone, but it achieved significant volume." Similarly, the NA beer market, while not new, holds potential for substantial growth and mainstream acceptance. In a rapidly changing market, staying ahead requires a blend of innovation, adaptability, and deep consumer understanding. For Dan Kopman, the journey through the beer landscape is as much about respecting tradition as it is about embracing the new waves of change. His experiences and insights offer valuable lessons for brewers and beer enthusiasts alike, navigating the ever-exciting and often tempestuous waters of the craft beer industry. Inspired by frequent trips to the Sierra Nevada Mountain range, Ken Grossman founded Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in 1980 and today it remains family-owned and operated. What started as a homebrewing hobby eventually grew into a well-honed craft, and later, one of the largest independent breweries in the U.S.Ken built the first brewhouse by hand in Chico, California after scouring salvage yards and defunct dairies to find the tanks, pipes, and valves he needed. The original brewhouse, which still exists today, first brewed a stout but was quickly followed by the Pale Ale that would change the course of American craft brewing and inspire countless brewers to explore the curiosities of hop-forward beers.Today, Sierra Nevada is highly regarded for using only the finest quality ingredients and has set the standard for craft brewers worldwide with innovations in the brewhouse and in its sustainability efforts. The pioneering spirit that launched Sierra Nevada now spans both coasts with breweries in Chico, California and Mills River, North Carolina. Sierra Nevada is famous for its extensive line of beers including Pale Ale, Hazy Little Thing®, Torpedo® and a host of seasonal, specialty and limited release beers.***CHA-CHING! Today it's a visit to Des Moines, Iowa for a lively conversation with two of the state's leading brewers, the guild director, and historian Maureen Ogle.Last week I was in Iowa to speak and spend time at the state's guild annual conference. It had been several years since I was there and I wanted to get a better handle on what is happening in the state – and it's a lot.  What is happening there is important to the industry as a whole, and worth a listen.  My guests are: Dave Morgan is a small town Iowa native, that attended and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in Business Administration in 1998. After graduation, he jumped into the hospitality industry, opening and operating multiple food and beverage locations before transitioning into the craft brewery scene in 2012. He leads the team at SingleSpeed Brewing Co, operating 3 locations (Brewery+TapRoom), all located within the state of Iowa and has been a member of Iowa Brewers Guild Board since 2020, currently holding down the incredibly important / do the least position of Vice President.  Noreen Otto is a Wisconsin native who relocated to Iowa to attend college and law school. After graduation, she worked in a number of political roles. She then spent 7 years focused on state and federal policy for Hy-Vee, Inc. as Vice President Government Relations. Her work focused on retail business issues. Noreen also served at the Chief Administrative Officer for specialty cheese maker, Maytag Dairy Farms before joining the Iowa Brewers Guild as the Executive Director in fall of 2021. She lives with her husband and two sons in Newton, where she sits on the Jasper Community Foundation and library board. Noreen can be found making cheeseboards when she isn't trying to understand Minecraft.  After graduating from the University of Notre Dame with a Finance degree in 2009, R.J. Tursi spent time with relatives in southern Italy, working at their winery and learning what it means to be passionate about your work and craft.  In 2012, R.J. and his parents, Bob & Amy Tursiopened Exile Brewing.  Over the past 11 years R.J. has guided Exile through the relatively easy growth of the 2010s, earned his Advanced Cicerone Certification, and is currently helping Exile navigate the more tumultuous waters of the 2020s.  and  Maureen Ogle is an historian and the author of Ambitious Brew: A History of American Beer. This Episode is Sponsored By:ShopifyShopify's already taken the cash register online, helping millions sell billions around the world.
