It's been many a Moon since Larry first mentioned Analogue's announcement of the Duo, their version of the TurboDuo. Since then, Larry has been collecting a double handful of TG-16 games (and 1 TG-CD game from Kickstarter) with the hopes of playing them on.... The Polymega. You know where that went. This week, Larry talks about Analogue finally doing a pre-order for the Duo and then quickly realizing he needs some more TG-CD games to justify the system. The Super NES CD-ROM System[1][2] (commonly shortened as the SNES-CD), known as Super Famicom CD-ROM Adapter in Japan,[3] is an unreleased video game peripheral for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The add-on built upon the functionality of the cartridge-based SNES by adding support for a CD-ROM-based format known as Super Disc.[4][5] The SNES-CD platform was developed in a partnership between Nintendo and Sony. The platform was planned to be launched as an add-on for the standard SNES, as well as a hybrid console by Sony called the PlayStation[6] (nicknamed the "Nintendo PlayStation" to distinguish it from the later Sony console of the same name) similar to Sharp's Twin Famicom and NEC's TurboDuo. Another partnership with Philips yielded a few Nintendo-themed games for the CD-i platform instead of the SNES-CD. Sony independently furthered its developments into their own stand-alone console, which ended up inheriting the PlayStation name and would serve as the chief competitor of the Super NES's cartridge-based successor, the Nintendo 64. ****************************************************************************************** Grab a beer, a slice of pizza and come hang out with us. It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.. and who better to trample all over that line than Jay and Mike? We're back to discuss another certified banger: Lords of Thunder for Sega CD and TurboDuo. Make sure you wear your fireproof facemask, because this game could melt your face off. So tune in and see what we thought about what many people think is the game with the greatest soundtrack in video game history. Thank you for listening!
We start off getting to know Andrew and his history with today's featured video game system before moving on to the Turbografx-16 itself, where it came from (19:00), and our first experiences with it (39:00). The meat of the episode lies in us talking about the crazy decisions made by NEC's video game division and how they led to the relatively early demise of the Turbografx-16 (52:30). We finish things up talking about the brief, almost revival of the Turbografx-16 via the TurboDuo and TTi Technologies before wrapping with our favourite Turbografx-16 video games you might not have tried! The one and only Crystal Kay is the guest today in this very special episode of the Japan Station podcast. A singer, songwriter, and actress, Crystal Kay has been singing for just about as long as she's been able to speak. In fact, her first credit is at the age of four when she used her vocal talents in a song for a commercial promoting the PC Engine Duo game console (known as the TurboDuo in the U.S.). Crystal released her debut single in 1999 at the age of 13 and in the two decades since then she's sold millions of albums and produced numerous chart-topping singles. Her positive attitude, incredible talent, and status as one of the earliest artists of mixed race to rise to mainstream fame in Japan have earned Crystal many fans around the world and turned her into a role model for many. In this episode we discuss: When it was that Crystal realized she was a source of inspiration for other mixed race individuals in Japan How Crystal deals with negativity Crystal's relationship with her mother Crystal's thoughts on the 20th anniversary of her major debut as a singer Crystal's connection to the legendary Japanese singer Misora HIbari Crystal's daily routine And more! You won't be able to help feel positive after listening to this episode.
