The Super Nintendo and Super Famicom have some of the greatest games ever made. But what sort of output did the system have in its twilight years? Today on XVGM Radio, Mike and Ed look at the late life cycle of the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom from 1996 and beyond, official releases only (No homebrew/indie stuff here!) to showcase some quality music from the system's end of the road era. From 1996 to 2000, we're spotlighting the hits, misses and risks the console took to continue improving upon its sound. In this episode you can hear all about Tamogotchi poop patterns, Zelda clones, CDs as weapons and of course…going to the west blowhole forest. Don't miss this future classic episode of XVGM Radio! Títulos incluidos: X-Men: The Arcade Game (hasta 6 jugadores con rollback netcode), Captain America and the Avengers, Maximum Carnage, Separation Anxiety, Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin y Silver Surfer. On this week's ep we dig into our time reacquainting ourselves with what TVs used to be like, with a freewheeling conversation that touches on all kinds of minutiae like when it might be time to replace your aging set's capacitors, trying to understand signal standards from RGsB to YPbPr, remembering the time when the only inputs on your TV were a couple of screws, and a bunch more. Will's TV: General Electric 10AB3406WF02Brad's TV: https://crtdatabase.com/crts/toshiba/toshiba-14af42This is a great teardown and servicing video for the Toshiba: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ij0i-xnvic Support the Pod! Then, in Week Old News, Activision delivers some grimy AI slop, but also gives the world more old Tony Hawk games. Plus, Acclaim is apparently back, Nintendo Switch Online gets one of the best games ever made, Suikoden comes to mobile phones, and more! Finally, Dan still can't really play as many games as he wants, and Kris has had a headache for the last 3 weeks. But Paper Mario is great, as is the new Daredevil show! Enjoy! It was the first console marketed in the fourth generation, commonly known as the 16-bit era, however in actuality, the console has an 8-bit central processing unit (CPU) coupled with a 16-bit graphics processor, effectively making the claim somewhat false advertising. It was released in Japan in 1987 and in North America in 1989. In Europe[3] the Japanese model was unofficially imported and distributed in the United Kingdom[4] and France from 1988. In Japan, the system was launched as a competitor to the Famicom, but the delayed United States release meant that it ended up competing with the Sega Genesis and later the Super NES. ________________________________________________________________________ Grab a beer, a slice of pizza and come hang out with us. Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris bring you the final 10 20 30 40 of 2024! Were there any good games this month? Well, yes! Turns out the Super NES had a heck of a month, as did the arcade scene back in 1984. Which games were the most notable? Let's find out! At the top of the show, there once again wasn't nearly as much game playing as either of our hosts would have liked, but there were still stories of electronic mops, Christmas Cookies, Microwave hoods, and a whole lot more! Finally, in Week Old News, there wasn't a whole lot to report. But we still managed to track down a couple of stories worth talking about. Which ones? You'll have to listen to find out! A passionate exploration of the rise and fall of the Sega Genesis. It's clear that the Genesis left an indelible mark on the gaming industry and had a profound impact on your own gaming journey. From its origins as Sega entered the gaming scene in the early 80s to its fierce rivalry with Nintendo, the Genesis carved its own path and introduced innovative hardware and iconic games. The console war between Sega and Nintendo during the 90s was a defining moment for the gaming industry. With a strong lineup of games like Fantasy Star and Streets of Rage, the Genesis held its ground. The competition intensified when Nintendo released the Super Nintendo or Super NES, leading to wild strategies employed by both companies to win over gamers. The inclusion of Mortal Kombat with blood on the Genesis attracted many players, and Sonic the Hedgehog became an iconic symbol of speed and attitude. However, as you highlighted, Sega started facing challenges with its decision to release numerous add-ons like the Sega CD and the 32X, which fragmented the market and strained the company's resources. The arrival of the PlayStation and the ill-fated Sega Saturn further impacted Sega's position in the industry. Despite the decline of the Genesis and Sega as a whole, the console's legacy and impact continue to resonate. Its focus on sports games and multiplayer experiences, along with iconic titles like Sonic and exclusive licensed games, set it apart. The Genesis showcased technical feats like Virtual Fighter Two and even had a portable version, the Sega Nomad. As we conclude this episode, we eagerly anticipate diving deeper into the final part of this series, exploring the rise and fall of Sega itself. Thank you, Jr, for sharing your insights and taking us on this nostalgic journey through the gaming history of the Sega Genesis. Stay tuned for more captivating episodes here on West Virginia UNcommonplace.
Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan, Kris, and Dean board the Cartoon Express for a trip to Pac-Land! They watched the classic Pac-Man cartoon episode Sir Pac-a-Lot. How did it go? And how did they rank all the cartoons they've watched so far this year? Why are can openers so funny? What's up with all the hats? Let's find out! At the top of the show, Dean's been playing something called Deep Rock Galactic Survivor, which sounds like way too many words to be real. Meanwhile, Dan dives deeper into the world of the Pokemon Trading Card game, and spends some quality time with Pacific Drive, which is NOT the same thing as Pacific Rim. Kris, on the other hand, is obsessed with Ode to Castlevania, wildly unimpressed by Hatch Tales, and notices some fun new updates to his Atari VCS. Finally, in Week Old News, Monster Hunter becomes a shampoo, Phil Spencer spouts some nonsense about the Xbox's new ad campaign, Blaster Master makes its way to the Super NES, and more! Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan is back! He and Kris tackled the August 10 20 30 40, where there were soe absolutely killer months for platforms like PlayStation 2 and 3DS, but they weren't alone! Gamecube had Pikmin 2, Game Boy Advance had Astro Boy: The Omega Factor, PS3 got the P.T. Demo, and of course, GALLEON! The next big thing from the creator of Lara Croft! That was a big deal… right? At the top of the show, Dan regales Kris with his tales of chemotherapy. This being Dan, nothing went as planned, and a great amount of hijinks ensued. As a result though, he didn't get around to playing many games. He did manage to watch all of Kris's Archeology videos though, because he's a nice guy! Meanwhile, Kris continued to get over Covid, played through Zelda II because it's awesome, and planned a Minecraft birthday party for his son. Finally, in Week Old News, SuperMario Maker comes to the Super NES, Eternal Champions is getting made into a major motion picture for some reason, the GameCube gets a new ODE option, and more. Enjoy! Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dean fills in for Dan, joining Kris for this month's Alphabet Soup-er Series! It was Kris's pick for the letter O and he went with the marble rolling wonder On the Ball for Super NES. It's an odd game for sure, with some zany music and completely unhinged “cinematic” cutscenes, but is it a good time? How much better does it perform when coupled with the Super NES Mouse? Let's find out! At the top of the show, Dean has some dog troubles as he works on getting his new house built, but he still finds time to dive into Steamworld Heist 2. Meanwhile, Kris got Covid, so he had an absolutely miserable week of coughing, sweating, and feeling like death, but also found the time to figure out his ongoing TV situation, play the new Doom releases, the new Vampire Survivors DLC, among other things. Finally, in Week Old News, Limited Run announces a frankly insane new version of Doom for Super NES, Borderlands crashes and burns at the box office, Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition for Sega Genesis gets patched, and more. This week we do a summer check in on some of the games we've been playing. Strangely, they're all some form of retro-inspired RPG/adventure style games. There's the Commodore 64-era inspired Skald: Against the Black Priory. There's the Super NES era Super Mario RPG remake. And there's the PS1-aesthetic adventure game homage, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes. Lorelei was of particular interest, as it inspired us to lean into the artistic approach and go back to pen and paper as a way to solve puzzles and remember information. It's a good sign when a game inspires a notebook full of glyphs and half-crazed riddles.
For Kris's pick this month, he chose the Super NES polygonal racer Stunt race FX. Just how good is 16-bit bluegrass? Let's find out! Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris conclude their coverage of the summer games extravaganza they lovingly refer to as Not E3! This time around, Nintendo hit it big with their June Direct, including a number of big surprises like a new Mario & Luigi, Zelda starring Zelda, and Metroid Prime 4. Atooi also farted out a rather unimpressive Hatch Tales deepdive, Limited Run got weird with this year's LRG3, and Sunsoft made a 6 minute presentation about 3 games. Which was certainly a choice. At the top of the show, Dan still doesn't have news about his ongoing health issues, but he did manage to be stressed about it all week! So instead of playing games, he talked about the trials and tribulations of being a toy collector. Meanwhile, Kris celebrated his birthday week with some delicious food, Game Boy Mega Man games, and the glory that is Shovel Knight Dig. . Finally, in Week Old News, FromSoftware decides NOT to fire a bunch of people, a bunch of long thought lost games resurface for various platforms, someone has decided to port Doom II to Super NES, and more. Show Notes On this week's podcast, it';s time for the conclusion of May-nia 2024! This year's topic is Super NES soundtracks, and Dan is making Kris make some dreadful decisions. He's plugged IGN's best SNES games of all time list into a tournament-style bracket system and is making Kris choose which ones he likes best. Round one had some easy choices in there, but this time around it's going to be even tougher to choose. What will happen? This is a shorter show than usual because of a scheduling conflict, so sadly there's no Week Old News, What's New at SAG, or any of our other regular segments. Things should return to normal next week. Show Notes Tales of Kenzera Zau On this week's podcast, May-nia has returned! This year's topic is Super NES soundtracks, and Dan is making Kris make some dreadful decisions. He's plugged IGN's best SNES games of all time list into a tournament-style bracket system and is making Kris choose which ones he likes best. Round one had some easy choices in there, but set up some truly dreadful decisions to be made next week. How will he choose? HOW??? At the top of the show, Kris got back into Horizon Chase 2 for a bit, enjoyed the heck out of the new Vampire Survivors DLC, and absolutely hated, HATED, Knights of the Old Republic. He was also fortunate enough to get his hands on Goliath Depot, a new arcade-style action game all about closing doors. It's great! Meanwhile, Dan went on and on about Marel Snap for a bit, but also got to spend some quality time with Tales of Kenzera Zau, a new exploratory adventure game that just so happens to be really freaking cool! Finally, in Week Old News, Pokemon Go players are inventing beaches, Nintendo and Capcom are making absurd amounts of money by not trying to make all of the money, Sony gets bullied into being slightly less awful about the whole Helldivers 2 situation, and Dan and Kris weigh in on the big Microsoft studio closures of the week. Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris dive into what can only be described as the most unbelievably dull 10-20-30-40 in the show's history. That is, of course, until they get to the 30, where both the Super NES and Sega Genesis had some absolutely stellar months featuring the likes of Streets of Rage 3, King of Dragons, and Super Metroid. But just how bland were the rest of the decades? Did the Wii U actually have the best release of the month? Let's find out! At the top of the show, Dan had some adventures in water heating this week when his existing heater broke, and the joys of trying to fix/replace it commenced! Meanwhile, Kris started watching Fallout, finished his Dadish replays, and enjoyed the exploits of a turnip committing tax evasion. Finally, in Week Old News, Hallmark revealed their awesome new gaming-themed holiday ornaments, a variation of the Konami Code was discovered in everyone's least-favorite Castlevania game, Nintendo's latest Indie World showcase left Dan unimpressed and Kris delighted, and a whole lot more! Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris tackle a listener request that's a much tougher question to answer than it might seem. Which console's library was better? The Super NES or the Game Boy Advance? With so many amazing games on each system, it's a tough call, but the guys are going to try their best, and probably wind up wasting a whole lot of time because well, that's what they do best! At the top of the show, Dan and Kris quickly dove into a lengthy conversation about X-Men 97 and how it's so good even Dan likes it! Also Kris talks about how episode 5 put a huge dent in his week, but thankfully The Bad Batch's consistent mediocrity was able to calm him down. Dan has had some issues with Marvel Snap lately, and he goes to great lengths to explain what they are and why they bother him. I'd tell you what they are, but I honestly wasn't paying any attention. Kris beat Princess Peach Showtime and worked his way onto Dadish 2 in preparation for Dadish 3D! Finally, in Week Old News, Polygon compiles a list of terrible potential names for the Switch 2, Vampire Survivors finally comes to PlayStation and it's bringing Contra along for the ride, Ubisoft dumps some exhausting pricing schemes on us for their new Star Wars game, and a whole lot more!
