The geopolitics in today's world is such dynamic.  Every day even by moment the situation could be very different.  When our World is in high tension and uncertainty under multidimentional wars:  military conflicts, cyber attacks, disinformation, sabotages and the recent Trade war, even the regional conflicts can affect the world situation.  Since 1949 the Chinese Civil War, the China-Taiwan relations has never been easy.  The communist formed Chinese government in Beijing and the democratic system formed Taiwanese government in Taipei, the administrations of cross-strait relations of both sides are independent from the official diplomatic system.  Until today, the relationship has been remained complex and controvertsial.  The Giant China views the democratically governed island as Chinese territory and Taiwan constantly faces stepped-up military and political pressure and threat. In this interview, the Chairman of Taiwan Corner Michael Danielsen will join us and navigate the situation in Today's Taiwan Strait situation.~~~ Photos: Michael DanielsenTaiwan Corner, an independent of economic and political interests.https://taiwancorner.org/who-we-are/Taiwan Corner informs about Taiwan in Europe and is a member based organization located in Denmark and UK.~~~ Michael Danielsen: Chairman of Taiwan Corner. With a deep understanding of the region's political and cultural nuances, he gives speeches in various venues and offers valuable insights into Taiwan's evolving position in the global landscape. His expertise is particularly relevant in addressing current issues and challenges facing Taiwan. He has given talks about Taiwan's democracy, Taiwan's identity, and cross strait relations in the European Parliament, London School of Economics, and other venues.~~~ Michael shares the song to our listeners:Mike Oldfield, Talk about your life

FRED (450 mill.) På jord. Mellem mennesker. I sindet. I hjertet. Med: The Archies, Bing & Bowie, Elvis Costello, Depeche Mode, The Doors, Steve Hackett, Imagine Dragons, Imperiet, Kashmir, John Lennon, New Musik, Mike Oldfield, Prince, Paul Simon, Spleen United, Cat Stevens, Taylor Swift, Thompson Twins og U2. When you think of rock music anchored by piano, there are only a few standouts.  But outside of Elton John, perhaps the best known rock pianist is New York's Billy Joel.  Born in the Bronx and growing up in Long Island, Joel got his start early (at age 4) with piano lessons and dropped out of high school to pursue music full time.  After joining a couple of short-lived bands, Joel started his solo career and released his debut album, "Cold Spring Harbor" in 1971.It was his second album which would be remembered as his true nationwide debut.  Piano Man was his first release from Columbia Records, and came out while Joel was still dealing with legal issues from his former label.  Many of the tracks exhibit a story telling approach common in the early 70's.  Although Joel was in his mid-20's when the album was released, it had a maturity about it that made it do well both on the pop and adult contemporary charts.  Despite this being his breakthrough album, Joel would struggle to find success in his follow-up albums.  He was in danger of being dropped by the record label when he hit it big once again in 1977 with "The Stranger."  From that time on, Billy Joel would be an A-list performer, capping off a long career with a decade-long residency at Madison Square Garden.Wayne takes us through this breakthrough album for this week's podcast. Piano ManThe title track was written while Billy Joel was working at The Executive Room piano bar in Los Angeles, and is loosely based on the patrons that came through the bar told from the perspective of the piano player.  It would become both his signature song and synonymous with Joel.  "Son, can you play me a memory...I'm not really sure how it goes, but it's sad, and it's sweet, and I knew it complete when I wore a younger man's clothes."You're My HomeThis song was the B-side of the "Piano Man" single, so it did get some air play.  The song has a country feel, and was written for Joel's first wife.  He could not afford to buy her anything while in California between record deals, and he wrote it as a Valentine's present.  The Ballad of Billy the KidIf the last song was country, this next song is the Western.  This is an epic that pays tribute to a fictionalized Billy the Kid, telling a story of an outlaw in the Wild West.  The last verse switches to modern times, with Billy Joel taking the place of Billy the Kid, looking forward to new exploits.  Captain JackAn early live radio performance of this song is what got the attention of Columbia Records in the first place.  Joel wrote the song when living in Oyster Bay, Long Island, in an apartment from which he could see drug deals going down.  "Captain Jack" is the local drug dealer, and the song reflects the sadness that comes from a life in the grip of heroin.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Gypsy Woman  by Bill Dean (from the motion picture "The Lords of Flatbush")This movie starred Henry Winkler and Sylvester Stallone before they became famous for playing The Fonz and Rocky respectively.  STAFF PICKS:For the Love of Money by the O'JaysBruce starts the staff picks with a well known funk tune that went to number 9 on the Billboard Singles chart.  This song takes its title from I Timothy 6:10, "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in thier greediness, and pierced themselves through."  It also was Donald Trump's WWE entrance music.Benny and the Jets by Elton JohnLynch brings us another piano artist, singing about a fictional glam-rock band.  "Oh, but they're weird and they're wonderful.  Oh, Bennie, she's really keen.  She's got electric boots, a mohair suit, you know I read it in a magazine."  The lyrics are told from the perspective of a fan at a concert.Rikki Don't Lose that Number by Steely DanRob's staff pick is the lead track to Steely Dan's third album, "Pretzel Logic."  It is also their most commercially successful single, peaking at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The inspiration for this jazz-infused rock song was a New York writer and artist named Rikki Ducornet.  Future Eagles alum Timothy B. Schmit provides backing vocals.Bad Company by Bad CompanyWayne features a song that is from the self-titled album AND the self-titled group.  The inspiration for this song was a Clint Eastwood western, and it is both a lament and a celebration.  "Rebel souls, deserters we are called.  Chose a gun, and threw away the sun...". INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Tubular Bells by Mike OldfieldWe close out to a song that was both a hit at the time, and would be immortalized in the horror film "The Exorcist."  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. When it comes to films that have left a lasting mark on the horror genre, few can rival the terrifying power of The Exorcist (1973). Directed by William Friedkin and adapted from William Peter Blatty's 1971 novel, The Exorcist shattered boundaries with its unflinching portrayal of demonic possession and the battle between good and evil. Released in December 1973, the film captivated audiences and sparked controversy for its graphic content and shocking themes. This review will explore why The Exorcist (1973) remains a pinnacle of horror cinema, from its groundbreaking storytelling to its cultural and cinematic significance.A Simple Story Elevated by Complex ThemesAt its core, The Exorcist (1973) tells a simple yet profoundly disturbing story. It revolves around the possession of a young girl, Regan MacNeil (played by Linda Blair), and the desperate efforts of her mother, Chris (Ellen Burstyn), to save her. The family's only hope rests with two priests, Father Karras (Jason Miller) and the seasoned exorcist, Father Merrin (Max von Sydow). While the premise seems straightforward—a child in peril, religious figures battling a supernatural force—the film digs deeper into themes of faith, guilt, and the fragility of human existence. One of the key elements that makes The Exorcist so unsettling is its exploration of faith, or rather, the loss of it. Father Karras is a man wracked by doubt. He's a priest who has lost his mother, a psychiatrist struggling to reconcile his beliefs with the suffering he sees in the world. His personal crisis mirrors the larger question the film asks: what do we do when confronted with something truly evil? This is the tension at the heart of The Exorcist, elevating the film from mere shock value to something far more existential and terrifying.Unforgettable PerformancesThe performances in The Exorcist (1973) are nothing short of iconic, particularly that of Linda Blair as the possessed Regan. Blair's transformation from a sweet, innocent child to a terrifying vessel for a demon is astonishing. It's a performance that pushes the limits of what was previously expected from child actors, and it's still regarded as one of the most chilling portrayals in horror history. Her physical and emotional range—enhanced by the groundbreaking makeup effects of Dick Smith—leaves a lasting impact. Every contorted expression every guttural sound that emerges from her during the possession sequences is haunting.Ellen Burstyn's portrayal of a desperate mother is equally powerful. Chris MacNeil's descent from a successful actress to a mother on the verge of breakdown is heart-wrenching. The film builds up her growing terror and helplessness as Regan worsens, creating a harrowing portrait of maternal despair.Jason Miller's conflicted Father Karras is a revelation. His nuanced performance of a man wrestling with his faith adds emotional depth to the film's supernatural elements. Meanwhile, Max von Sydow's Father Merrin is the stoic, wise counterpoint to Karras' inner turmoil. Although Merrin's character is more of a traditional hero, von Sydow brings gravitas and world-weariness to the role, making the final confrontation all the more gripping.Pushing the Boundaries of Special EffectsIn 1973, audiences had never seen anything quite like The Exorcist. The special effects, many of which were practical, broke new ground in horror filmmaking. From Regan's spider-walk down the stairs to the levitation scenes, the film's visual shocks have become legendary. The makeup that transforms Blair's face into something grotesque, the vomit spewing, the rotating head—these effects still hold up today and remain unsettling even in a world where digital effects dominate. But it's not just the visual effects that make The Exorcist so memorable. The sound design plays a crucial role in heightening the terror. The eerie soundscape, from the unnatural voices Regan speaks to, to the house's creaking, creates a sensory overload that gets under your skin. And who could forget Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells? While not initially composed for the film, the track has become synonymous with The Exorcist, its hypnotic rhythm forever tied to the creeping sense of dread the movie invokes.Cultural Impact and ControversyThe release of The Exorcist (1973) sparked widespread debate and controversy. Audiences were reportedly fainting, vomiting, and fleeing theatres in panic due to the intensity of the film. In fact, the film was banned in several countries and faced resistance from religious groups who considered it blasphemous. The stark depiction of exorcism and the visceral horrors it presented hit a nerve with the public. It challenged not just what could be shown on screen but how far filmmakers could push the boundaries of audience tolerance.Despite—or perhaps because of—its controversy, The Exorcist was a massive commercial success. It became the first horror film nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, ultimately taking home two Oscars for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound. More importantly, it shifted the landscape of horror cinema. The film proved that horror could be more than just campy monster flicks or psychological thrillers; it could be raw, visceral, and deeply disturbing. It opened the door for a more sophisticated brand of horror, one that wasn't afraid to tackle profound themes alongside graphic imagery.Enduring LegacyWhat makes The Exorcist (1973) endure over fifty years later is not just its capacity to shock but its ability to ask timeless questions. The film doesn't merely present a battle between good and evil; it challenges viewers to confront their own beliefs about the nature of evil, faith, and redemption. This is why The Exorcist still resonates with audiences today—it forces us to consider the fragility of the human condition and the possibility that something incomprehensible, something truly terrifying, may lurk in the shadows. Moreover, The Exorcist set the bar for future horror films, influencing a generation of filmmakers. Its blend of psychological depth, religious horror, and disturbing imagery can be seen in countless horror classics that followed, from The Omen to Hereditary. The film also left its mark on pop culture, referencing Regan's possession and the infamous exorcism scenes becoming staples in parody, tribute, and analysis.Final ThoughtsThe Exorcist (1973) remains one of the most important and influential films in horror history. Its stellar performances, groundbreaking special effects, and thought-provoking themes make it more than just a scary movie—it's a cinematic experience that forces audiences to confront their deepest fears. Whether you've seen it once or a dozen times, The Exorcist never loses its power to horrify, disturb, and provoke. As a film that redefined the genre and pushed cinematic and cultural boundaries, it stands as a testament to what horror can achieve when it's done right. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcasthttps://www.borntowatch.com.au/

In this episode, the lads become possessed by the unnerving creepiness of Mike Oldfield's unlikely hit "Tubular Bells", the theme music from the 1973 horror classic The Exorcist.  Thankfully, special guest Joseph Trivers performs a successful exorcism on the dreadful scene, through his exploration of minimalist music and the mechanics of how it confounds, delights, and offers unforeseen avenues of expression.
