Today we are joined with the father of e-sports Walter Day! You may have been introduced to Walter many years ago through the popular Netflix documentary The King Of Kong and he is back as the main focus in a heartwarming new film titled Arcades & Love Songs. There is a brief moment in The King Of Kong showing Walter playing his guitar and saying he was going to quit the gaming industry and become a musician. That stuck with the documentary team and many years later they decided to take a deeper look into what he meant by that and ended up unexpectedly capturing the most beautiful journey. Walter began hearing original songs in his head after getting his heart broken in 1985, and since then he has wrote hundreds of songs about this woman that never saw the light of day. In this film not only does he reunite with her to tell her that, but at the age of 70 embarks on a career in music, records an album, and through the inspiration of his new appreciation for Taylor Swift ends up playing his very first gig. I can't say enough about how wonderful this documentary is. It will leave you inspired, and may even bring a lil tear to your eye. Was amazing to have this chat as well with Walter and get some extra layers and context on his beautiful journey. Arcades & Love Songs: The Ballad of Walter Day is currently playing in select theatres, but be sure to check out their website https://www.arcadesandlovesongs.com/ and follow them on their socials for updates and details on future releases.
Hola a todos y todasss! On this episode, we're diving into a story that blends nostalgia, music, and the origins of esports — a follow-up to one of the most beloved documentaries in gaming history. I'm talking about Arcades & Love Songs: The Ballad of Walter Day.This new film is the feature directorial debut from Oscar-winning producer Ed Cunningham — best known for Undefeated and The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. If you're a fan of the latter, you're in for a real treat, because this film brings us back into the world of Walter Day — the iconic star of The King of Kong, and the man often credited as the father of esports. Now 74, Walter is taking center stage once again in this musical documentary that follows his legal battle to protect his legacy, all while chasing a long-held dream: recording and performing the rock-opera love songs that have been echoing in his mind since his heart was broken back in the golden days of the arcade. This episode features not one but two great interviews — first with Ed Cunningham, the director of Arcades & Love Songs, and then with the legend himself, Walter Day. We'll talk about everything from the making of the film, to Walter's unique musical vision, to what this journey has meant for him personally. So whether you're a longtime fan of The King of Kong, a lover of indie film, or just curious about this one-of-a-kind story, stick around — you won't want to miss this.
Arcades in the early 1980s enjoyed an explosion of popularity as the new art form swept the world and collected millions of quarters in the process. Kids love them.

Ask not for whom the bell tolls, listener, as it tolls for our two hosts, Dan and Tay! Except, in a literal sense - as these two enter the ring ready to duke it out in a manner most slapstick! On this episode, Dan and Tay talk about the arcade fighter, Sonic The Fighters - otherwise titled Championship - alongside a rich history of Sega as a company. Arcades are no stranger to this Japanese developer, and it was bound to place its biggest mascot in a fighter at some point! Though Sonic had made arcade appearances, this was the first truly 3D experience of our beloved hedgehog. Come listen as our hosts chat about the cartoon nature of this game, its strengths, weaknesses, and odd development as a joke from a staff member. It's going to be a brawl for the ages! It seems funny to think, but in the early 80s, a gigantic industry almost came to a grinding halt... Video games--and arcades--had grown so quickly, and on such a wide scale, that many began to ask if it was ok for our kids to be playing them so much. This is when video games and arcades became under attack as parents, watch groups, and entire cities started to crack down on them. From the U.K. to Canada, to America, regulations began to be put in place to limit young people from even stepping foot into an arcade. The attack on video games even went all the way to the Supreme Court, and a generation of kids didn't realize how close they got to losing something they loved--forever... Edward Jones is the co-author, along with the late Christopher Woodward, of the Guide to the Architecture of London, which, originally published in 1983, is now in its fifth edition and has become the definitive guide book of the subject. In 2017 the guide book became the basis of an app - called the London architecture Guide, and one of the Architecture Foundation's most ambitious projects. earlier this year a range of entries was added by Jones alongside a new generation of authors, and it was on this occasion that we met to talk about the guide book's legacy and its evolution. “What matters hugely to me is that architecture has a role to play in public life. That's what this book is about - to celebrate excellence in architecture, and to be somewhat critical of things we don't argee with…there should be a debate about architecture in the city” – Edward JonesShow notes: Arcades, the history of a building type by Geist, Johann Friedrich (1983)College City, Colin Rowe (1978)John Rocque's map of London, Westminster and Southwark (1746)London The Unique City by Steen Eiler Rasmussen (1934)Gilbey House, Serge Chermayeff, London, 1937Scaffold is an Architecture Foundation production, hosted by Matthew Blunderfield. Featuring: Ammosart, Ashgar, Belghast, Kodra, Tamrielo, and Thalen Hey Folks! We are all reeling a bit from the past week, but we start off things with the joyful return of Ammo from her trip to Japan. She spends a bit of time talking about all the arcade hopping and wonderful food that she found along the way. From there we dive into the furious growth of Pokemon TCG Pocket and how it has swept through our friend group. Ash talks about his experiences with Monster Hunter Wilds Beta and Bel shares his own comfort gaming in the form of the weird Path of Exile Necro Settlers Event League. Bel also talks a bit about playing the Brighter Shores Early Access, and how it has some core design problems that will keep him from playing for very long. Kodra talks a bit about GeekGirlCon where we realize… that he has in fact been talking about it every year since the very first year in 2016. Our podcast… is old. He also talks a bit about his role in the upcoming SudokuCon Stream and some of the nonsense he is going to be doing combining two of his loves: Sudoku, and Celeste. Topics Discussed: Ammo Returns from Japan Pokemon TCG Pocket Monster Hunter Wilds Beta Path of Exile POE2 Delay Necro Settlers League Brighter Shores Early Access GeekGirlCon 2024 SudokuCon Upcoming Stream

Painstakingly researched and written by football-obsessed writer and experienced game journalist, historian, and documentarian Richard Moss – author of Bitmap's own The Secret History of Mac Gaming – A Tale of Two Halves: The History Of Football Video Games stays keenly on the ball as it shares the rich and influential history of video game football – or 'soccer', for our American readers – striving to understand the very best the genre has to offer; and those releases that go a little wide of their target. A Tale of Two Halves takes you on a fascinating journey from the very first examples of the form all the way through to the genre's 2000s' heyday. It hits the back of the net with expert analysis of over 400 football games, including Sensible Soccer, Kick Off, Match Day, FIFA, Pro Evolution Soccer, This Is Football, Championship Manager, Premier Manager, and both old-school and new-school Football Manager. Gathered together in a single volume, that remarkable spread of releases presents a surprising variety of interpretations of the beautiful game, showcasing one of the medium's most creative, beguiling realms. A Tale of Two Halves primarily focuses on footy gaming's formative years – meaning from around 1980 to 2010 – and carefully divides the genre into two distinct halves, taking a considered look at each. As such, the first half is dominated by the fast and simple 2D action of icons like Kick Off, International Soccer, and Nintendo's Soccer. Then, following the half-time whistle, it turns its attention to the increasingly realistic 3D outings defined by icons like FIFA, Pro Evo, and Virtua Striker. Across its 628 pages, A Tale of Two Halves also features a foreword by legendary commentator Clive Tyldesley, hundreds of meticulously realised screenshots, and 13 interviews with pioneering football game developers. Inside you'll also find a series of illustrations from James Reynolds' 'Unlicensed FC' project – which celebrates Pro Evo's unusual takes on players' real names – as well as perfectly pitched pixel art from the team at 8-Bit Football. Numerous gaming platforms are covered, from the Atari 2600 and C64 to the Collecovison, via the Amiga line, PlayStation 1, Xbox 360, Arcades, and many more. Rudolf Thomas Inderst is a professor of Game Design with a focus on Digital Game Studies at the IU International University of Applied Science, department lead for Games at Swiss culture magazine Titel kulturmagazin, radio host of “Replay Value”, editor of “DiGRA D-A-CH Game Studies Watchlist”, a weekly messenger newsletter about Game Culture and curator of @gamestudies at tiktok.
