The Nintendo Entertainment Podcast is here! And with a Nintendo Direct (Partner Showcase) to break down, and a game to go "bananas about," two hosts will be very busy tonight! First, Todd and Will do another deep dive into their time with Donkey Kong Bananza! Todd has finished reviewing the game, and he gave it a perfect score! Why did he do that? What drove him to do that? Does Will agree based on all he's done in his "completionist run?" Find out here! Then, the duo dive into the Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase and highlighted everything that was, and wasn't, in the presentation. What did they like? Who was the MVP from the 3rd parties? And will we EVER get another mainline Direct? You'll know after you listen! Mostly, at least... Finally, the two dive into the news! Pokemon Legends Z-A is making a splash in Japan, while also releasing some new gameplay footage! Furthermore, there's the arrival of Mario Paint on Nintendo Switch online, a potential leak about Splatoon Raiders, and Todd makes a pitch as to why Star Fox should get the "Bananza Treatment!" So sit back, relax, and enjoy the Nintendo Entertainment Podcast!

In today's Daily Fix:Sony is suing Tencent over the game Light of Motiram, which Sony claims is a rip-off of their Horizon franchise. Judging by the trailers only, it's not hard to see why Sony is taking Tencent to court—the two games feature a red-haired female protagonist in similar outfits, a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by robot animals, and even similar font and key art. In other Sony news, August's PS Plus games have been revealed, with Lies of P headlining the offerings. And finally, Mario Paint is back on a Nintendo console. Nintendo dropped the game on the Nintendo Switch Online service, and yes the Switch 2 version takes advantage of the new Joy-con's mouse controls. Switch 1 owners can still play, provided they plug in a compatible USB mouse.
This week we're joined by Daniel Alba from GVG (Good Vibes Gaming) to discuss what Nintendo possibly has in store for Mario's 40th anniversary this year. Will we see a new Mario Paint? Gianmarco Soresi takes a seat in The Wayback as we head to 1990s Potomac, Maryland! (check out his podcast "The Downside"). With two Maryland natives in the wayback, we reminisce about what it was like living through two of the craziest events in Maryland history: the Air Florida Flight 90 disaster and the D.C. Sniper. Then Gianmarco gets nostalgic about theater camp, and 90s toys and video games like Power Rangers, Mario Paint, and Dance Dance Revolution. We also get into some of the great late 90s pro wrestling characters, like D-Generation X, The Undertaker, Mankind and Mr. Socko. Lastly, we do a deep dive on 90s home fitness crazes, like P90x , the Ab Roller, Abflex, 8-minute Abs, and Tony Little. BALTIMORE! I'm coming home! Mario Paint. For a generation of kids in the early 90's, that title alone conjures up images of star studded music staffs, spraypaint drawings and one killer fly swatting game. A safe place where anyone could create, Mario Paint was the launchpad of imaginations, passions and in some cases careers for millions of people. On this episode, we share stories of pictures drawn, music composed, and dreams realized via this one-of-a-kind piece of creation software.STARRING (all handles from Twitter)J.R. It. Is. Here. The next King of Games tournament has arrived, and this time we're throwing down to crown one game the best of 1992! This year is such a banger we had to have a preliminary round just to settle on our 16 contenders. Kicking things off: Mario Paint and Dune II!
This week's episode features a strawberry rhubarb sour ale from Great Divide Brewing out of Colorado. Zack brings it back to the early episodes of CoHops and talks about some recent game collecting, Nick dives down the Resident Evil rabbit hole, and Garritt organizes a fight club. Instead of a news article the crew takes a look at the March 1993 issue of Nintendo Power and learn that Mario Paint is more innovative than Street Fighter II. It's a full on mega episode as we talk about three big topics! First, Joe and Ethan discuss the September direct in full and dissect it for Mario goodness, as well go off on tangents about Octopath Traveler II and Kingdom Hearts III. Secondly we discuss some very recent news with the first trailer for the Mario movie, where we discuss Chris Pratt's Linda Belcher like Mario voice. Finally, we get into baby's first graphic design program with Mario Paint and really dig into the fun of creating on the SNES. It's a banger of an episode; give it a listen!

Aug. 5-11: Guns N Roses is a riot, John Lithgow gets creepy, the Spy Kids get weirder, Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis are unelectable, a trio of kid ninjas, and Mario Paint is music to our ears. All that and more, this week on Thirty Twenty Ten.
Interdisciplinary artist, designer, technologist, and DJ May-Li Khoe teamed up with friend and independent researcher Andy Matuschak to make what they thought would be a fun project on a short timeline. While Playdate's schedule extended a bit, and then a bit more, the pair had a great time creating a whimsical music and dance maker that is a joy to use. Lay down your drum and bass tracks, add a melody, and tell your pizza to twerk with this sparkly composer that's full of fun details!
Returning guest Jack Yarwood recently wrote about this Mario Paint sequel in his article How a British Developer Made a Japan-Exclusive Sequel to Mario Paint: the Super Nintendo utility to create art, animation, music, etc. Published in 1999, Mario Artist Paint Studio was a direct sequel in everything but name. Being exclusive to Japan and exclusive to the N64 floppy disk add-on 64DD is just the beginning of this odd tail. Author Chris Kohler explores the evolution of niche fan culture from analog to digital through stories from his book Final Fantasy V (Boss Fight Books Book 18). “Young Chris” learns uploading to America Online makes it live forever, all the cool games stay in Japan, you can use Mario Paint as a Rosetta Stone for Japanese, and searching the internet for information about Final Fantasy has no results. “Now Chris” manifests Frank into existence with his thoughts and will always have his back.
