Namco set out to create a super popular rhythm game and accidentally created the most popular mascots since Pac-Man. Don-chan and Katsu-chan are unavoidable as we talk about the extremely popular in the East but largely ignored in the West drum game, Taiko No Tatsujin! Why was this game never released in the U.S. until now? How did an instrument mishap lead to the most embarrassing moment of young Rob's life? Is every arcade game released after the year 2000 just a Playstation in disguise? How did Donkey Kong steal this game's popularity? We answer your questions like what arcade game did we initial hate but grew to love over time (#RedemptionArc), what our favorite non-video game arcade attraction (excluding pinball), and what IP we predict will be the next new beat ‘em up announced. ¡Realismo made in Kojima! Tastes like chicken.
The boys sit down and talk about the new Namco showcase event. Surprisingly there are some solid games from franchises like Digimon, Death Note, and My Hero Academia.

WELCOME TO THE STAGE OF HISTORY. It's time to talk about the GameCube virtual console and the three “launch” games so to speak, starting the trilogy with Soul Calibur II, a game Mike & Neil covered over 4 years ago and now get to look at with fresh eyes. Friend of the show Luigi (@luigisappartment) joins the episode to dive into the world of Link, the Soul Edge, and the unique relationship Nintendo and Namco had in the early 2000s that made this nearly unthinkable inclusion happen.

📦 Deliver at All Cost: reparto caótico a lo Mario Kart con paquetes absurdos y físicas descontroladas. Risas aseguradas.
📦 Si te lo perdiste, este resumen en clave divertida te pone al día de TODO: juegos, consolas, polémicas, momentazos, teorías locas y mucho, mucho salseo videojueguil. fWotD Episode 2949: Namco Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 1 June 2025, is Namco.Namco Limited was a Japanese multinational video game and entertainment company founded in 1955 which operated video arcades and amusement parks globally, produced video games, films, toys, and arcade cabinets. They were one of the most influential figures in the worldwide coin-op and arcade game industry; Namco produced several multi-million-selling game franchises, such as Pac-Man, Galaxian, Tekken, Tales, Ridge Racer, and Ace Combat. In 2006, Namco merged with Bandai to form what is now named Bandai Namco Holdings; the standalone Namco brand continues to be used for video arcade and other entertainment products by the group's Bandai Namco Amusements division. The Namco name comes from Nakamura Manufacturing Company, derived from its founder Masaya Nakamura. In the 1960s, it manufactured electro-mechanical arcade games such as the 1965 hit Periscope. It entered the video game industry after acquiring the struggling Japanese division of Atari in 1974, distributing games such as Breakout in Japan. The company renamed itself Namco in 1977 and published Gee Bee, its first original video game, a year later. Among Namco's first major hits was the fixed shooter Galaxian in 1979. It was followed by Pac-Man in 1980. Namco prospered during the golden age of arcade video games in the early 1980s, releasing popular titles such as Galaga, Xevious, and Pole Position.Namco entered the home market in 1984 with conversions of its arcade games for the MSX and the Nintendo Family Computer, later expanding to competing platforms, such as the Sega Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, and PlayStation. Namco continued to produce hit games in the 1990s, including Ridge Racer, Tekken, and Taiko no Tatsujin, but later endured financial difficulties due to the struggling Japanese economy and diminishing arcade market. This led to the 2005 announcement of a merge with toy maker Bandai, which was completed in 2006 as Namco Bandai Holdings; Namco's former video games division was merged into a subsidiary of the holdings company, Namco Bandai Games, now called Bandai Namco Entertainment. Namco is remembered in retrospect for its unique corporate model, its importance to the industry, and its advancements in technology. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:51 UTC on Sunday, 1 June 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Namco on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Emma.
Namco's ground-breaking arcade game Pac-Man had its first focus test in a Tokyo cinema foyer on May 22nd, 1980. Created by 24 year-old Toru Iwatani, it was originally called ‘Puck-Man' and designed to appeal to women as well as men. Each of the ghosts - Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde - was programmed to have its own personality using AI routines, creating a sense of ‘character' despite the pixelated rendering. Atari declined the opportunity to distribute the game in the U.S. - where, in just a year, it generated $1billion of revenue - in quarters… In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain why the gameplay wipes out after 256 levels; explore the craze that saw a Pac-man strategy textbook shift one million copies; and consider why the game's name was changed to avoid some unfortunate graffiti… Further Reading: • ‘The game that ate the world: 40 facts on Pac-Man's 40th birthday' (The Guardian, 2020): https://www.theguardian.com/games/2020/may/22/pac-man-video-game-40-years-old • ‘Why Players Around the World Gobbled Up Pac-Man' (Smithsonian Magazine): https://www.smithsonianmag.com/innovation/why-players-around-world-gobbled-up-pac-man-180974902/ • ‘Pac-Man Level 256 - the last level in the game' (The Glitch Gamer, 2017): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcI42czB2q4 Love the show? ACTION! We put the pedal to the metal in our light gun miniseries with Namco's Time Crisis. Seek cover as we explore the entire series starting with V.S.S.E. agent Richard Miller and ending with whatever Time Crisis 5 was. Did Namco's attempt to top Sega's Virtua Cop succeed? Is Time Crisis 2 the most complete light gun game experience? What are the most addictive roguelikes? Does Wild Dog, leader of Wild Dog, own a wild dog? With the Krispy Kreme/Pac-Man donut partnership it seems like a good time for us to identify which arcade character we think would make the best flavor for a donut. We also answer: if the last video game we played were turned into a pinball machine, what would it be like, and what gameplay features would it have? Rising to peak popularity in the 1990s, 2.5D platformer games were a defining genre of consoles like the original PlayStation. The first one we will be discussing is Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, developed by Namco and released in North America on March 10th, 1998. Join Klonoa on a fantastic journey in the land of Phantomile, where the mysterious crash of a flying ship starts an epic quest through colorful worlds of thrills and danger. The brothers enjoyed the nostalgic feeling of the game and offered praise for the unique boss battles (ding ding ding). Ant liked that there were consequences for not playing well enough while taking some shots at modern games. Tom compares Door to Phantomile to one of the biggest and most successful Triple A games ever made and offers a scorching hot take. This week instead of a poll the brothers are asking a trivia question. What animal do you think Klonoa is? Cat, fox, or rabbit?Follow us onX @BrosBossBattlesYouTube @BrosBossBattlesInstagram @BrosBossBattleshttps://brothersandbossbattles.com/

John Ray joined Atari Inc in 1977 as a hardware engineer, learning the ropes with 1978's Fire-Truck, arguably the first truly co-op arcade game and a distinctive arcade presence due in no small part to his analogue circuitry audio. Ray was also involved with the Atari-licensed versions of Namco's Dig Dug and Xevious, the awesome arcade version of Tetris and - into the 1990s - the hugely popular San Francisco Rush racing series of the 90s.

Few developers have had as long and prolific a career as our guest, Graeme Bayless. From working on mainframes, to selling Kaypros, to playtesting Accolade's launch titles, to producing games for SSI, Sega Technical Institute, Hyperbole Studios, Dynamix, EA, Eidos, and NetherRealm Studios. In Part 4, we talk about the decade that Graeme spent in the wilderness of the game's industry, during which he worked on titles such as Tomb Raider Legend and Anniversary at Crystal Dynamics, tried to salvage projects like Enslaved, Dead to Rights Retribution and Splatterhouse at Namco, returned to sports titles at 2K Games before getting the chance to start his own studio, Fierce Wombat. Graeme gives us amazing insights into the life of a game dev like few others can or would. Matt's going to title this episode "Game Industry Comes to Jesus" because it's funnier - so if you're on YouTube later and see it: it is the same episode. And what is the episode about? Well, it turns out mobile gaming is not actually profitable for anyone outside of a couple big companies. Capcom, Square, Namco - all closing their mobile gaming divisions after a decade plus because they've done nothing but lose money. Personally, I was shocked because all we ever hear is how much money King is making. Well, I guess it's only them. So, what does that mean for gaming in general? For mobile gaming specifically? And will I make the obvious joke about coming to Jesus? (Yes, near the end, yes. Of course. Look at me.)
