Openers: Ethnos and Ganz Schön Clever (app) Game designer David Thompson joins me to talk about most of the big game conventions in our hobby, and what they mean when you're testing or pitching designs. Of course, most of us will encounter those conventions as a player, and David talks about that experience, too. We talk about Essen (Spiel), UK Games Expo, Nuremberg, Origins, and Gencon. Have you been to any of these? Some may be on the other side of the world from you, and would be an incredible expense (and adventure). Others could be within driving range, or at least a reasonably priced plane ticket. Maybe you want to go just to experience one of these events. Perhaps you're a real Cult of the New junkie, and you want to buy games when they are first available. Do you just want to play a bunch of boardgames? Some of these are better for that than others. Or, heck, maybe you're an aspiring game designer, and you want to pitch some games like David does. That makes some of these working events, even business trips for you. There are some interesting differences between them for that purpose, too. David mentions several other big cons that he hasn't attended yet: Dice Tower Con, BGGcon, WBC, PAX Unplugged (and GAMA Trade Show). Of course I've talked about BGGcon a number of times, but I'm not going to make it this year. WBC is on my list for a convention I want to attend, too. And then...he goes on to say that his favorite convention was a regional con, Tennessee Game Days. Sounds great! Academy Games is currently in Kickstarter with a new version of a game called Mare Nostrum; a game of building empires, defending territories, building alliances and managing lots of resources. The company has had massive successes in the past with games like Fief – France 1429, 1775 Rebellion, Freedon – The Underground Railroad and the Conflict of Heroes series and now they’re poised to repeat the feat with this project. And I am not surprised. It looks amazing and Academy Games has forged a reputation for quality both of gameplay and production that people have come to trust. But, as usual, a new game is also a new risk both for consumers and producers and one can never find enough information before buying to help make the right decision. Which is why I got together with Uwe to ask him a bunch of questions about the game and the project. Hope you enjoy the show and take a look at the Mare Nostrum Kickstarter project.

Many people hear the words “historical games” and immediately get the unavoidable urge to yawn. Loudly. Yet, Academy Games has challenged that yawn reaction time and time again, and time and time again they’ve been successful. With an impressive collection of games of which their series Conflict of Heroes continues to succeed and draw new fans, Uwe (pronounced “oova”) Eickert and his team of merry humans take a no-nonsense approach to games that are carefully crafted to reflect history accurately and uncompromisingly. This includes tackling subjects as sensitive as the abolitionist movement and, in the near future, more modern wars and social movements. Kickstarter has also played a great role in helping the company grow and to say that Academy Games’ have enjoyed great results would be a disservice to how well they’ve done. With a project going on at the time of publishing this podcast called Fief that has already obtained more than ten times the initial amount they were aiming for, we had the pleasure of catching up with Uwe Eicktert and ask him a few questions about the company, he games and what the future might bring.

If you are in the board game business, there has been a lot of discussion about why an established company should or should not be using Kickstarter. Uwe Eickert, a very savvy businessman, and owner of Academy Games, spells it out clearly why Kickstarter is such a boon to established board game companies, not just the little guys.
