Alice is the author of several books. http://aliceconnor.com/#about-the-author. She also writes for Daily Worker Placement, including a series titled “Playing at Religion”, and co-hosts the podcast "Table Talk." Defining a Religiously Themed Game Your definition: “One whose theme is primarily but not exclusively exploring the practice, history, or theology of any religion or spiritual tradition.” Some examples 1. The Settlers of Zarahemla 2. Ierusalem: Anno Domini 3. Ezra and Nehemiah (forthcoming) 4. Nicaea What Makes a Great Religious-Themed Game? It succeeds at what it's trying to do. It explores its theme complexly and appropriately for its weight. It is joyous. It comforts the player and/or exhorts them to a higher good. Your hypothesis: “Games that tend to intend to convince the player of something tend to be worse than games that play in the space.” What are Our Top 3 Religiously Themed Games? Kevin: Frostpunk, Freedom: The Underground Railroad, Sleeping Gods Daniel: Red Cathedral, Biblios, Heaven & Ale Alice: Acts of the Evangelists, Nuns on the Run, Zen Tiles
Good storytelling isn't easy, and board games seem to struggle with it especially - which makes the ones that do pull it off, all the more memorable. We delve into the ways that games can engage us and create lasting experiences through stories. Before we spin a yarn, we talk about Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Artisans of Splendent Vale. POH Talk Radio Thu, Sep 2, 8p CR Gibbs The Underground Railroad in the Midwest. When some think of the Underground Railroad, many think of conductor Harriet Tubman and the eastern seaboard routes she followed. However, the Underground Railroad had players and routes in what is now the Midwest, including Illinois and Indiana. CR Gibbs will discuss the Midwestern system complimenting the “Road to Freedom: The Underground Railroad in the DMV” lecture that he often gives in Metro DC. To continue my content inspired by Black History Month, Dr. Patrick Rael of Bowdoin College joins me to break down the historical background of Freedom: The Underground Railroad. Dr. Rael and I actually did this episode before, in 2017. However, times have changed and we figured we would take a fresh look. We present insights and perspectives that pertain to the past, as well as to today. If you are uncomfortable with cultural and "political" chatter in your board gaming content, you might want to skip this episode. We'll see you on Sunday! Jogos citados nesse episódio: - Freedom: The Underground Railroad - The Cost - Lisboa - Banco Imobiliário - This War of Mine - Viticulture - Food Chain Magnate - Kanban - The Gallerist - Fiasco - CO2: Segunda Chance - Castle Panic - Dead of Winter - Dungeon Lords - Villainous - Blood Rage - Patchwork - Barenpark Músicas desse episódio: - John Coltrane - Countdown - Shovel Knight OST - The Starlit Wilds O Tabulices está disponível também no Spotify! Emma and Gil welcome Dr. Mary Flanagan, designer of Monarch, Visitor in Blackwood Grove, Buffalo, Awkward Moment, and plethora of other games in a myriad of styles and platforms, from party to strategy on digital in tabletop. Dr. Flanagan is also an artist, having exhibited works (many game-related) all around the world, and teaches game design at Dartmouth, who also hosts her game design and research lab, Tiltfactor. We discuss designing games from the perspectives of fun and meaningful change. How does one make a transformative game that players actually enjoy, but that is still effective at building empathy and fighting prejudice? CONTENT WARNING: There is a brief mention of racial prejudice, and sexual assault in literary works towards the end of the episode. SHOW NOTES 0m21s: "Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo" is a grammatically correct sentence. This video explains it, and other lexically ambiguous sentences. 1m21s: Tiltfactor, Dr. Flanagan's game design and research lab at Dartmouth 1m57s: If you're reading this, congratulations, you're reading the show notes! 3m58s: Professor Scott Rogers covered The Game of The Goose in Biography of a Board Game 221.5. 4m27s: For more information on these French Revolution-themed versions of Game of the Goose (Jeu de la Revolution Francaise), check out page 17 of this PDF. It's also interesting to note that Robespierre attempted to install a new state religion for France during the Revolution, the Cult of the Supreme Being (Culte de l'Être suprême); it's entirely possible that its dogma was reinforced through things like board games. Perhaps it also helped with the bizarre decimal-time-based calendar that Robespierre couldn't get to stick, but that still frustrates historians to this day. 5m30s: More information about Dr. Flanagan's book, Critical Play. 6m39s: The Landlord's Game by Lizzie Magie is the game that Monopoly was based on. 7m51s: September 12: A Toy World is a game where a player is trying to kill terrorists by firing missiles at a village. Openers: Ethnos and Ganz Schön Clever (app) Game designer David Thompson joins me to talk about most of the big game conventions in our hobby, and what they mean when you're testing or pitching designs. Of course, most of us will encounter those conventions as a player, and David talks about that experience, too. We talk about Essen (Spiel), UK Games Expo, Nuremberg, Origins, and Gencon. Have you been to any of these? Some may be on the other side of the world from you, and would be an incredible expense (and adventure). Others could be within driving range, or at least a reasonably priced plane ticket. Maybe you want to go just to experience one of these events. Perhaps you're a real Cult of the New junkie, and you want to buy games when they are first available. Do you just want to play a bunch of boardgames? Some of these are better for that than others. Or, heck, maybe you're an aspiring game designer, and you want to pitch some games like David does. That makes some of these working events, even business trips for you. There are some interesting differences between them for that purpose, too. David mentions several other big cons that he hasn't attended yet: Dice Tower Con, BGGcon, WBC, PAX Unplugged (and GAMA Trade Show). Of course I've talked about BGGcon a number of times, but I'm not going to make it this year. WBC is on my list for a convention I want to attend, too. And then...he goes on to say that his favorite convention was a regional con, Tennessee Game Days. Sounds great! Left foot, peg foot, traveling on. We review Freedom: The Underground Railroad, a co-operative game where players take on the roles of brave Abolitionists tasked with the goal of ending slavery in the United States.
Slavery has played a horrific role in the history of many countries for a very, very long time. Far from being a thing of the past, slavery is still very present in modern day and efforts to eradicate it continue. Learning from history is probably the best way to understand where we come from and where we’re going. Freedom – The Underground Railroad does exactly that. Taking a massive risk, Academy Games has created a game that explores the efforts to free slaves. The players take on the role of historical Abolitionists who will try to save as many slaves a possible between the 1800’s and the Civil War. A careful balance between raising funds for the cause and moving the slaves from location to location will be the key to save enough slaves and win the game. However every time the slaves are moved, the slave catchers will be alerted and will capture the slaves to send them back into slavery. The game has received a great deal of praise and we were very curious to find out how it worked and if it really is as good as it sounds. This is keeping in mind that we have a certain Max Murray in our team who doesn’t really like cooperative games! Hope you enjoy the show!
Uwe Eickert has a very successful board game company called Academy Games. He has launched successful Kickstarter projects, all with niche interests, but have done very well. His board game, Freedom: The Underground Railroad, has been a delicate topic, but extremely well received. Uwe tracks every aspect of his customer base. He invests in important tools to keep track of his most important asset, his customers.Take a listen and learn a lot. I always do.
