One of the greatest challenges in any relationship is that we all have blind spots, those things others can see about us that we cannot see about ourselves. Like a driver who fails to check a blind spot before changing lanes, our unseen attitudes, habits, assumptions, and behaviors can lead to costly collisions in our relationships with God and others. In 2 Samuel 12, King David is confronted by the prophet Nathan after David's sin with Bathsheba and Uriah. David could clearly see the injustice in Nathan's story about a rich man stealing a poor man's lamb, but he could not see the same injustice in his own life until Nathan declared, “You are the man” (2 Samuel 12:7). David's willingness to listen, repent, and return to God became a turning point in his story. The sermon reminds us that growth requires humility. We need trusted people who love us enough to tell us the truth, and we need the courage to receive that truth. Ultimately, Jesus is our "true mirror." As we fix our eyes on him through Scripture, prayer, and community, he reveals both who we were created to be and the areas where we need transformation.

Financial struggles, broken relationships, grief, illness, disappointment, and unanswered questions can leave us feeling lost and overwhelmed. Joseph's story is one of the clearest examples of this reality. At 17, Joseph's life seemed full of promise. Yet he was betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused, imprisoned, and forgotten. For 13 years, Joseph endured one breakdown after another. Throughout the story, however, one truth is repeated: "The Lord was with Joseph." God's presence did not remove Joseph's suffering, but it sustained him through it. Over time, Joseph's suffering became a place where God formed humility, faithfulness, courage, and compassion within him. The story's redemption extends beyond Joseph. God also works in the lives of Joseph's brothers, the very people who caused his suffering. Through grace and forgiveness, God restores a broken family and brings healing where there had been betrayal and guilt. Ultimately, Joseph's story points us to Jesus, the God who enters our suffering rather than remaining distant from it. Because of Christ's death and resurrection, we can trust that our breakdowns are not the end of the story.

But between choosing a destination, booking flights, creating an itinerary, and figuring out logistics, it's easy to feel stressed before your trip even begins. At The Travel Brats, we've planned everything from last-minute city getaways to international adventures booked nearly a year in advance. Over time, we've learned that the best trips happen when you focus on smart planning without overplanning every minute. Here's our step-by-step guide to planning a vacation the right way.   1. Start With Your "Why" Before choosing a destination, ask yourself: Do I want relaxation or adventure? Am I traveling for food, culture, nature, or nightlife? Am I recharging or packing my schedule? Your answer determines everything from budget to destination to daily activities. Helpful questions to research: Is this destination better for couples, friends, or families? Is it good for digital nomads? Can I visit without renting a car? Does it offer more adventure or relaxation? The clearer your travel goals, the easier every other decision becomes.   2. Set Your Dates and Budget You don't need an exact budget, but you need a realistic one. Consider: Number of travel days Flight costs Hotel or Airbnb costs Food and drinks Transportation Activities and excursions Most importantly, leave room for unexpected expenses. Start Planning Early The first step is to plan ahead. The earlier you begin, the more options you'll have for lodging, travel, and activities. Crystal recommends considering destinations that are a little off the beaten path. These places often have fewer crowds and lower prices while still offering plenty of opportunities for rest and fun. If you're flying, she suggests using Google Flights to search flexible destinations. You can enter your travel dates and explore lower-cost flight options across the country. Just as important, set a clear budget for the entire trip before you go. Decide what matters most to your family. Maybe staying near the beach is a priority, but eating out every meal is not. Knowing those priorities ahead of time helps you spend intentionally rather than react in the moment. Take Advantage of Free Activities Some of the best vacation memories don't cost anything. Crystal encourages families to search for free things to do in their destination. Try looking up phrases like “best free things to do” along with the name of the city or area you'll be visiting. You may not be able to do everything, but letting each person choose one activity can help the trip reflect the whole family's interests. Crystal also suggests giving each family member a set budget and allowing them to plan a few hours of the vacation within that amount. This can be a fun way to teach kids practical money skills. They learn how much things cost, how to make tradeoffs, and how to enjoy the responsibility of planning. Be Strategic About Meals Food can quickly become one of the most expensive parts of a trip, especially if you eat out for every meal. One way to save is to stay somewhere that offers free breakfast. Then, bring snacks or simple meal items from home. If you're flying and can't pack much food, visit a grocery store when you arrive. A loaf of bread, peanut butter and jelly, fruit, carrots, chips, or sandwich supplies can cost far less than several restaurant meals. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy a special meal out. Part of a vacation can be the fun of eating at a memorable place. The key is to be strategic. Choose the meals you want to splurge on, and save on the rest.
