Walker encourages you to tell friends about So Very Wrong About Games, despite his not listening to the podcast. Mark has recommended it to him, but apparently Walker's contempt for his co-host's opinions is not limited to games, but extends also to the podcast they produce together about games. One assumes Walker also does not read the episode descriptions, which is truly risky, and might create an incentive to make them devoted to discussing his manifold character flaws. We are happy to welcome Jenn Bartlett, the Board Game Librarian, to the show! She is a contributor to Board Game Breakfast on the Dice Tower, where she shares her passion for games inspired by books in her weekly segment, From the Page to the Table. We chat about three such games in this episode. First, Anthony talks about his recent plays of Dinosaur Island (5:18), which was based on a movie that was based on a book! That counts, right? Second, Jenn shares about a light war game from Academy Games, 878 Vikings (17:41). Finally, Jason shared about a family weight game with a mischievous spirit, The Grimm Forest (27:18). We end with a discussion of how libraries could fill vital roles in our gaming lives. So, if you are looking for an alternative place to gather, play games, try games, and all of that good stuff, Jenn talks all about how your library could be a good resource (or, if it isn't how you could advocate and make your library a good resource). **Programming note - We did the best we could with a subopitmal sound setup, We apologize for that and hope you enjoy the show.

This week, Chris and Anthony look at one of the most successful euros of the last 10 years - Uwe Rosenberg's Agricola - and discuss some games you might like if you also like this one.  To kick things off, we asked listeners what games they had purchased because they were worried about future availability with our question of the week.  Next up, we look at some of the upcoming games we're excited about, including two new Uwe Rosenberg titles, Nusfjord and Indian Summer, releasing at Essen (or shortly after) this year, and ZiPang Portable, now on Kickstarter.  We then delve into a deep dive review of 878 Vikings and all of its expansion materials. The new game from Academy Games, and the first in the Birth of Europe series is a spin on the formula in 1775 Rebellion, one of our favorites.  Finally, we look at 6 games you might like if you also like Agricola, including some games with starkly different mechanics, but very similar feels.  If you haven’t yet, be sure to connect with us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/boardgamersanonymous), Twitter (http://twitter.com/bgapodcast), and on our website (www.boardgamersanonymous.com). Academy Games is currently in Kickstarter with a new version of a game called Mare Nostrum; a game of building empires, defending territories, building alliances and managing lots of resources. The company has had massive successes in the past with games like Fief – France 1429, 1775 Rebellion, Freedon – The Underground Railroad and the Conflict of Heroes series and now they’re poised to repeat the feat with this project. And I am not surprised. It looks amazing and Academy Games has forged a reputation for quality both of gameplay and production that people have come to trust. But, as usual, a new game is also a new risk both for consumers and producers and one can never find enough information before buying to help make the right decision. Which is why I got together with Uwe to ask him a bunch of questions about the game and the project. Hope you enjoy the show and take a look at the Mare Nostrum Kickstarter project.

Academy Games and its charismatic leader are well known for producing historical games that are, as it happen, easy and fun to play without compromising on historic accuracy. In this case 1775 deals with the the start for the American Revolution after Britain imposes unwelcome new taxes. Yeah… that was me being understating. Anyway, there was a lot of fighting and a lot of people died and the French were there and it got all messy and unpleasant. So Academy Games made a game to teach us about the horrors of war and the cost it carries. And yet they manage to do that in a way that doesn’t put you off from it. At least that’s been our experience with other of their games. We had to try 1775 and have a go to see how it plays for the first time. And now we’re telling you all about it! Hope you enjoy the show!

Slavery has played a horrific role in the history of many countries for a very, very long time. Far from being a thing of the past, slavery is still very present in modern day and efforts to eradicate it continue. Learning from history is probably the best way to understand where we come from and where we’re going. Freedom – The Underground Railroad does exactly that. Taking a massive risk, Academy Games has created a game that explores the efforts to free slaves. The players take on the role of historical Abolitionists who will try to save as many slaves a possible between the 1800’s and the Civil War. A careful balance between raising funds for the cause and moving the slaves from location to location will be the key to save enough slaves and win the game. However every time the slaves are moved, the slave catchers will be alerted and will capture the slaves to send them back into slavery. The game has received a great deal of praise and we were very curious to find out how it worked and if it really is as good as it sounds. This is keeping in mind that we have a certain Max Murray in our team who doesn’t really like cooperative games! Hope you enjoy the show!

Many people hear the words “historical games” and immediately get the unavoidable urge to yawn. Loudly. Yet, Academy Games has challenged that yawn reaction time and time again, and time and time again they’ve been successful. With an impressive collection of games of which their series Conflict of Heroes continues to succeed and draw new fans, Uwe (pronounced “oova”) Eickert and his team of merry humans take a no-nonsense approach to games that are carefully crafted to reflect history accurately and uncompromisingly. This includes tackling subjects as sensitive as the abolitionist movement and, in the near future, more modern wars and social movements. Kickstarter has also played a great role in helping the company grow and to say that Academy Games’ have enjoyed great results would be a disservice to how well they’ve done. With a project going on at the time of publishing this podcast called Fief that has already obtained more than ten times the initial amount they were aiming for, we had the pleasure of catching up with Uwe Eicktert and ask him a few questions about the company, he games and what the future might bring.
