Incandescent Tarot Podcast
Tarot as a Tool for Thought with Georgi Gardiner

Incandescent Tarot Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 4, 2026 70:41

Episode DescriptionIn this episode of the Incandescent Tarot Podcast, Gina Wisotzky speaks with philosopher, creativity researcher, and tarot scholar Georgi Gardiner about tarot as a tool for thought.Together, they explore tarot beyond prediction: as a practice of inquiry, cognitive flexibility, visual literacy, self-reflection, and deep conversation. Georgi shares how a life-changing tarot reading led her to develop a philosophical framework for understanding the cards, and how she now uses tarot, image interpretation, and even games like Dixit in university classrooms to teach creativity, question design, and critical thinking. This conversation moves through epistemology, AI, ritual, attention, introspection, community, visual culture, and the role of play in meaning-making. Rather than treating tarot as an oracle that delivers fixed truths, Georgi offers an expansive vision of tarot as a conversational space: one that helps us examine assumptions, develop self-knowledge, and imagine new ways of relating to ourselves and others. In this episode, Gina and Georgi discuss:* Tarot as a tool for thought rather than a predictive system* How good tarot questions deepen inquiry instead of demand certainty* The role of cognitive flexibility and “flipping interpretations” in tarot practice* Why tarot can help develop creativity, visual literacy, and conversational skills* Teaching philosophy and creativity through tarot and image interpretation* The relationship between tarot, AI, and critical thinking in the age of generated information* Tarot as an antidote to shallow conversation* The social and communal dimensions of tarot, astrology, and ritual* How visual symbolism shapes perception and meaning-making* The value of introspection, self-knowledge, and questioning one's own assumptions* Using Dixit cards, nature, and other image systems as tarot-adjacent reflective practices* The importance of playfulness in ritual and philosophical inquiryAbout Georgi GardinerGeorgi Gardiner is an Associate Professor of Philosophy and Gender & Sexuality Studies at Tulane University, where she also teaches creativity. Her work explores epistemology, self-deception, attention, language, sexuality, ritual, and contemporary uses of tarot as a reflective and educational practice.Gardiner develops interactive philosophical workshops and installations focused on “scholarship through art, play, and adventure,” incorporating tarot, games, visual culture, and collaborative inquiry into both teaching and community-building. She also runs experimental arts and gathering spaces centered around creativity, ritual, and play.Find Georgi's work, tarot resources, essays, and workshops at:georgigardiner.com and on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/georgi.gardiner/ This is a public episode. 1 Amen, amen I say to you: He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up another way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2 But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.Huic ostiarius aperit, et oves vocem ejus audiunt, et proprias ovas vocat nominatim, et educit eas. 4 And when he hath let out his own sheep, he goeth before them: and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice. 5 But a stranger they follow not, but fly from him, because they know not the voice of strangers. 6 This proverb Jesus spoke to them. But they understood not what he spoke to them. 7 Jesus therefore said to them again: Amen, amen I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.Dixit ergo eis iterum Jesus : Amen, amen dico vobis, quia ego sum ostium ovium. 8 All others, as many as have come, are thieves and robbers: and the sheep heard them not. 9 I am the door. By me, if any man enter in, he shall be saved: and he shall go in, and go out, and shall find pastures.Ego sum ostium. 10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I am come that they may have life, and may have it more abundantly. Jesus is the Divine Shepard of the faithful sheep (the Church): the faithful sheep hearken to the teaching of His Word given by the Holy Ghost who assists the Ministers of the Church (the Pope and Bishops).

46 He came again therefore into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain ruler, whose son was sick at Capharnaum.Venit ergo iterum in Cana Galilaeae, ubi fecit aquam vinum. Et erat quidam regulus, cujus filius infirmabatur Capharnaum. 47 He having heard that Jesus was come from Judea into Galilee, went to him, and prayed him to come down, and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. 48 Jesus therefore said to him: Unless you see signs and wonders, you believe not. 49 The ruler saith to him: Lord, come down before that my son die.Dicit ad eum regulus : Domine, descende priusquam moriatur filius meus. 50 Jesus saith to him: Go thy way; thy son liveth. The man believed the word which Jesus said to him, and went his way. 51 And as he was going down, his servants met him; and they brought word, saying, that his son lived.Jam autem eo descendente, servi occurrerunt ei, et nuntiaverunt dicentes, quia filius ejus viveret. 52 He asked therefore of them the hour wherein he grew better. And they said to him: Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him.Interrogabat ergo horam ab eis in qua melius habuerit. 53 The father therefore knew, that it was at the same hour that Jesus said to him, Thy son liveth; and himself believed, and his whole house.Cognovit ergo pater, quia illa hora erat in qua dixit ei Jesus : Filius tuus vivit; et credidit ipse et domus ejus tota.Nereus and Achilleus were servants of Flavia Domitilla, who was martyred with them in A.D. 98. St Pancras was put to death at the age of fourteen. A.D. 304.

The disciples therefore were glad, when they saw the Lord. 21 He said therefore to them again: Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent me, I also send you.Dixit ergo eis iterum : Pax vobis. Sicut misit me Pater, et ego mitto vos. 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost.Haec cum dixisset, insufflavit, et dixit eis : Accipite Spiritum Sanctum : 23 Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.quorum remiseritis peccata, remittuntur eis : et quorum retinueritis, retenta sunt. 24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, who is called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him: We have seen the Lord. But he said to them: Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.Dixerunt ergo ei alii discipuli : Vidimus Dominum. Ille autem dixit eis : Nisi videro in manibus ejus fixuram clavorum, et mittam digitum meum in locum clavorum, et mittam manum meam in latus ejus, non credam. 26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them. Jesus cometh, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said: Peace be to you. 27 Then he saith to Thomas: Put in thy finger hither, and see my hands; and bring hither thy hand, and put it into my side; and be not faithless, but believing. 28 Thomas answered, and said to him: My Lord, and my God.Respondit Thomas, et dixit ei : Dominus meus et Deus meus. 29 Jesus saith to him: Because thou hast seen me, Thomas, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and have believed. 30 Many other signs also did Jesus in the sight of his disciples, which are not written in this book. 31 But these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God: and that believing, you may have life in his name. The doors were shut": The same power which could bring Christ's whole body, entire in all its dimensions, through the doors, can without the least question make the same body really present in the sacrament; though both the one and the other be above our comprehension.

And truly, Lazarus was one of those who were sitting at table with him.{12:3} Maria ergo accepit libram unguenti nardi pistici, pretiosi, et unxit pedes Iesu, et extersit pedes eius capillis suis: et domus impleta est ex odore unguenti.{12:3} And then Mary took twelve ounces of pure spikenard ointment, very precious, and she anointed the feet of Jesus, and she wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.{12:4} Dixit ergo unus ex discipulis eius, Iudas Iscariotes, qui erat eum traditurus:{12:4} Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was soon to betray him, said,{12:5} Quare hoc unguentum non væniit trecentis denariis, et datum est egenis?{12:5} “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the needy?”{12:6} Dixit autem hoc, non quia de egenis pertinebat ad eum, sed quia fur erat, et loculos habens, ea, quæ mittebantur, portabat.{12:6} Now he said this, not out of concern for the needy, but because he was a thief and, since he held the purse, he used to carry what was put into it.{12:7} Dixit ergo Iesus: Sinite illam ut in diem sepulturæ meæ servet illud.{12:7} But Jesus said: “Permit her, so that she may keep it against the day of my burial.{12:8} Pauperes enim semper habetis vobiscum: me autem non semper habetis.{12:8} For the poor, you have with you always. But me, you do always not have.”{12:9} Cognovit ergo turba multa ex Iudæis quia illic est: et venerunt, non propter Iesum tantum, sed ut Lazarum viderent, quem suscitavit a mortuis.{12:9} Now a great multitude of the Jews knew that he was in that place, and so they came, not so much because of Jesus, but so that they might see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.[8] "Me you have not always": Viz., in a visible manner, as when conversant here on earth; and as we have the poor, whom we may daily assist and relieve.

36 And one of the Pharisees desired him to eat with him. And he went into the house of the Pharisee, and sat down to meat. 37 And behold a woman that was in the city, a sinner, when she knew that he sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment;Et ecce mulier, quae erat in civitate peccatrix, ut cognovit quod accubuisset in domo pharisaei, attulit alabastrum unguenti : 38 And standing behind at his feet, she began to wash his feet, with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.et stans retro secus pedes ejus, lacrimis coepit rigare pedes ejus, et capillis capitis sui tergebat, et osculabatur pedes ejus, et unguento ungebat. 39 And the Pharisee, who had invited him, seeing it, spoke within himself, saying: This man, if he were a prophet, would know surely who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him, that she is a sinner. 40 And Jesus answering, said to him: Simon, I have somewhat to say to thee. But he said: Master, say it.Et respondens Jesus, dixit ad illum : Simon, habeo tibi aliquid dicere. At ille ait : Magister, dic. 41 A certain creditor had two debtors, the one who owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.Duo debitores erant cuidam foeneratori : unus debebat denarios quingentos, et alius quinquaginta. 42 And whereas they had not wherewith to pay, he forgave them both. Which therefore of the two loveth him most?Non habentibus illis unde redderent, donavit utrisque. Quis ergo eum plus diligit? 43 Simon answering, said: I suppose that he to whom he forgave most. And he said to him: Thou hast judged rightly.Respondens Simon dixit : Aestimo quia is cui plus donavit. At ille dixit : Recte judicasti. 44 And turning to the woman, he said unto Simon: Dost thou see this woman? I entered into thy house, thou gavest me no water for my feet; but she with tears hath washed my feet, and with her hairs hath wiped them. 45 Thou gavest me no kiss; but she, since she came in, hath not ceased to kiss my feet. 46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint; but she with ointment hath anointed my feet. 47 Wherefore I say to thee: Many sins are forgiven her, because she hath loved much. But to whom less is forgiven, he loveth less.Propter quod dico tibi : remittuntur ei peccata multa, quoniam dilexit multum. Cui autem minus dimittitur, minus diligit. 48 And he said to her: Thy sins are forgiven thee.Dixit autem ad illam : Remittuntur tibi peccata. 49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves: Who is this that forgiveth sins also? 50 And he said to the woman: Thy faith hath made thee safe, go in peace.Dixit autem ad mulierem : Fides tua te salvam fecit : vade in pace.[47] "Many sins are forgiven her, because she hath loved much": In the scripture an effect sometimes seems attributed to one only cause, when there are divers other concurring dispositions; for the sins of this woman, in this verse, are said to be forgiven, because she loved much: but (ver. 50) Christ tells her, Thy faith hath made thee safe. Hence in a true conversion are joined faith, hope, love, sorrow for sin, and other pious dispositions.

26 And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth,In mense autem sexto, missus est angelus Gabriel a Deo in civitatem Galilaeae, cui nomen Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.ad virginem desponsatam viro, cui nomen erat Joseph, de domo David : et nomen virginis Maria. 28 And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.Et ingressus angelus ad eam dixit : Ave gratia plena : Dominus tecum : benedicta tu in mulieribus. 29 Who having heard, was troubled at his saying, and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be.Quae cum audisset, turbata est in sermone ejus, et cogitabat qualis esset ista salutatio. 30 And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God.Et ait angelus ei : Ne timeas, Maria : invenisti enim gratiam apud Deum. 31 Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus.Ecce concipies in utero, et paries filium, et vocabis nomen ejus Jesum : 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the most High; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father; and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever.hic erit magnus, et Filius Altissimi vocabitur, et dabit illi Dominus Deus sedem David patris ejus : et regnabit in domo Jacob in aeternum, 33 And of his kingdom there shall be no end.et regni ejus non erit finis. 34 And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done, because I know not man? 35 And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.Et respondens angelus dixit ei : Spiritus Sanctus superveniet in te, et virtus Altissimi obumbrabit tibi. Ideoque et quod nascetur ex te sanctum, vocabitur Filius Dei. 36 And behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren:Et ecce Elisabeth cognata tua, et ipsa concepit filium in senectute sua : et hic mensis sextus est illi, quae vocatur sterilis : 37 Because no word shall be impossible with God.quia non erit impossibile apud Deum omne verbum. 38 And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.Dixit autem Maria : Ecce ancilla Domini : fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum. Et discessit ab illa angelus.

32 The Pharisees heard the people murmuring these things concerning him: and the rulers and Pharisees sent ministers to apprehend him. 33 Jesus therefore said to them: Yet a little while I am with you: and then I go to him that sent me.Dixit ergo eis Jesus : Adhuc modicum tempus vobiscum sum : et vado ad eum qui me misit. 34 You shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither you cannot come. 35 The Jews therefore said among themselves: Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles? 36 What is this saying that he hath said: You shall seek me, and shall not find me; and where I am, you cannot come?quis est hic sermo, quem dixit : Quaeretis me, et non invenietis : et ubi sum ego, vos non potestis venire? 37 And on the last, and great day of the festivity, Jesus stood and cried, saying: If any man thirst, let him come to me, and drink. 38 He that believeth in me, as the scripture saith, Out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.Qui credit in me, sicut dicit Scriptura, flumina de ventre ejus fluent aquae vivae. 39 Now this he said of the Spirit which they should receive, who believed in him: for as yet the Spirit was not given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

It is my Father that glorifieth me, of whom you say that he is your God.Respondit Jesus : Si ego glorifico meipsum, gloria mea nihil est : est Pater meus, qui glorificat me, quem vos dicitis quia Deus vester est, 55 And you have not known him, but I know him. And if I shall say that I know him not, I shall be like to you, a liar. But I do know him, and do keep his word.et non cognovistis eum : ego autem novi eum. 56 Abraham your father rejoiced that he might see my day: he saw it, and was glad. 57 The Jews therefore said to him: Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? 58 Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say to you, before Abraham was made, I am.Dixit eis Jesus : Amen, amen dico vobis, antequam Abraham fieret, ego sum. 59 They took up stones therefore to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.

In this episode Andrea Samadi revisits her conversation with Rohan Dixit, founder of Leaf Therapeutics, exploring how heart rate variability (HRV) and breath awareness reveal hidden stress and support self-regulation. Learn practical breath techniques like the physiological sigh and slow breathing, plus tips to calm nighttime stress and improve sleep, so you can build lasting resilience without over-relying on technology. In Episode 389, we revisit our September 2022 interview with Rohan Dixit, founder of Lief Therapeutics, where we explore the science behind HRV, breath awareness, and how learning to regulate our nervous system can improve stress, sleep, and resilience. In this episode, we cover: ✔ What heart rate variability (HRV) is and why it's one of the most important biomarkers for understanding stress, recovery, and resilience ✔  Why many people unknowingly hold their breath during stressful moments and how this impacts mental health and nervous system regulation ✔  How breath awareness can help shift the body from a stress response to a calmer, more regulated state ✔  How wearable technology like the Lief Therapeutics device can help people recognize stress patterns in real time ✔  Why improving breathing patterns before sleep can improve sleep quality and reduce anxiety the following day ✔  The connection between self-regulation, nervous system awareness, and long-term mental health ✔ Why learning to regulate stress through breathing is a skill that develops over time, not a one-time solution Welcome back to Season 15 of the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast. I'm Andrea Samadi, and here we bridge the science behind social and emotional learning, emotional intelligence, and practical neuroscience—so we can create measurable improvements in well-being, achievement, productivity, and results. When we launched this podcast seven years ago, it was driven by a question I had never been taught to ask— not in school, not in business, and not in life: If results matter—and they matter now more than ever—how exactly are we using our brain to make these results happen? Most of us were taught what to do. Very few of us were taught how to think under pressure, how to regulate emotion, how to sustain motivation, or even how to produce consistent results without burning out. That question led me into a deep exploration of the mind–brain–results connection—and how neuroscience applies to everyday decisions, conversations, and performance. That's why this podcast exists. Each week, we bring you leading experts to break down complex science and translate it into practical strategies you can apply immediately. Season 15 we've organized as a review roadmap, where each episode explores one foundational brain system—and each phase builds on the one before it. Season 15 Roadmap: Phase 1 — Regulation & Safety Phase 2 — Neurochemistry & Motivation Phase 3 — Movement, Learning & Cognition Phase 4 — Perception, Emotion & Social Intelligence Phase 5 — Integration, Insight & Meaning PHASE 1: REGULATION & SAFETY Staples: Sleep + Stress Regulation Core Question: Is the nervous system safe enough to learn? So far, we've revisited Dr. Baland Jalal on curiosity, sleep, imagination, and creativity; Dr. Bruce Perry on trauma, rhythm, and relational safety; and Dr. Sui Wong on autonomic balance, lifestyle medicine, and brain resilience. Today, we return to one of my favorite episodes—Episode 248[iv] with Rohan Dixit, founder of Lief Therapeutics—where we explored how a deeper understanding of heart rate variability, or HRV, can help us sharpen our awareness of stress, recovery, and resilience. What stood out most to me about Rohan's work was that his wearable device was never meant to become something we depend on forever. Instead, it was designed to help people learn how to breathe and regulate themselves in real time—so that eventually, they can recognize stress, anxiety, and overwhelm on their own, and know how to calm their body without needing the device. At the heart of Rohan's mission is something much bigger than technology. It's about helping people build the skills to manage stress in healthier ways—without over-relying on medication, quick fixes, or habits that may bring short-term relief but create long-term harm. This episode reminds us that self-regulation is a skill. And when we learn to read the signals of the body, we can begin to build the safety and stability the brain needs for learning, healing, and growth.

1 After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is that of Tiberias.Post haec abiit Jesus trans mare Galilaeae, quod est Tiberiadis : 2 And a great multitude followed him, because they saw the miracles which he did on them that were diseased.et sequebatur eum multitudo magna, quia videbant signa quae faciebat super his qui infirmabantur. 3 Jesus therefore went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. 4 Now the pasch, the festival day of the Jews, was near at hand.Erat autem proximum Pascha dies festus Judaeorum. 5 When Jesus therefore had lifted up his eyes, and seen that a very great multitude cometh to him, he said to Philip: Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?Cum sublevasset ergo oculos Jesus, et vidisset quia multitudo maxima venit ad eum, dixit ad Philippum : Unde ememus panes, ut manducent hi? 6 And this he said to try him; for he himself knew what he would do.Hoc autem dicebat tentans eum : ipse enim sciebat quid esset facturus. 7 Philip answered him: Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one may take a little.Respondit ei Philippus : Ducentorum denariorum panes non sufficiunt eis, ut unusquisque modicum quid accipiat. 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, saith to him:Dicit ei unus ex discipulis ejus, Andreas, frater Simonis Petri : 9 There is a boy here that hath five barley loaves, and two fishes; but what are these among so many? 10 Then Jesus said: Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. The men therefore sat down, in number about five thousand.Dixit ergo Jesus : Facite homines discumbere. Erat autem foenum multum in loco. Discumberunt ergo viri, numero quasi quinque millia. 11 And Jesus took the loaves: and when he had given thanks, he distributed to them that were set down. In like manner also of the fishes, as much as they would. 12 And when they were filled, he said to his disciples: Gather up the fragments that remain, lest they be lost. 13 They gathered up therefore, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above to them that had eaten. 14 Now those men, when they had seen what a miracle Jesus had done, said: This is of a truth the prophet, that is to come into the world. 15 Jesus therefore, when he knew that they would come to take him by force, and make him king, fled again into the mountain himself alone.

But what sayest thou?In lege autem Moyses mandavit nobis hujusmodi lapidare. Tu ergo quid dicis? 6 And this they said tempting him, that they might accuse him. But Jesus bowing himself down, wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 When therefore they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said to them: He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. 8 And again stooping down, he wrote on the ground.Et iterum se inclinans, scribebat in terra. 9 But they hearing this, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest. And Jesus alone remained, and the woman standing in the midst. 10 Then Jesus lifting up himself, said to her: Woman, where are they that accused thee? Hath no man condemned thee? 11 Who said: No man, Lord. And Jesus said: Neither will I condemn thee. And behold a greater than Jonas here.Viri Ninivitae surgent in judicio cum generatione ista, et condemnabunt eam : quia poenitentiam egerunt in praedicatione Jonae. Et ecce plus quam Jonas hic. 42 The queen of the south shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold a greater than Solomon here. 43 And when an unclean spirit is gone out of a man he walketh through dry places seeking rest, and findeth none. 44 Then he saith: I will return into my house from whence I came out. And coming he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.Tunc dicit : Revertar in domum meam, unde exivi. Et veniens invenit eam vacantem, scopis mundatam, et ornatam. 45 Then he goeth, and taketh with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is made worse than the first. So shall it be also to this wicked generation. 46 As he was yet speaking to the multitudes, behold his mother and his brethren stood without, seeking to speak to him.Adhuc eo loquente ad turbas, ecce mater ejus et fratres stabant foras, quaerentes loqui ei. 47 And one said unto him: Behold thy mother and thy brethren stand without, seeking thee.Dixit autem ei quidam : Ecce mater tua, et fratres tui foris stant quaerentes te. 48 But he answering him that told him, said: Who is my mother, and who are my brethren? 49 And stretching forth his hand towards his disciples, he said: Behold my mother and my brethren.Et extendens manum in discipulos suos, dixit : Ecce mater mea, et fratres mei. 50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father, that is in heaven, he is my brother, and sister, and mother.

1 And it came to pass, that on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes, with the ancients, met together,Et factum est in una dierum, docente illo populum in templo, et evangelizante, convenerunt principes sacerdotum, et scribae cum senioribus, 2 And spoke to him, saying: Tell us, by what authority dost thou these things? or, Who is he that hath given thee this authority?et aiunt dicentes ad illum : Dic nobis in qua potestate haec facis? aut quis est qui dedit tibi hanc potestatem? 3 And Jesus answering, said to them: I will also ask you one thing. Respondete mihi : 4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?baptismus Joannis de caelo erat, an ex hominibus? 5 But they thought within themselves, saying: If we shall say, From heaven: he will say: Why then did you not believe him? 6 But if we say, Of men, the whole people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet. 7 And they answered, that they knew not whence it was.Et responderunt se nescire unde esset. 8 And Jesus said to them: Neither do I tell thee by what authority I do these things.Et Jesus ait illis : Neque ego dico vobis in qua potestate haec facio. 9 And he began to speak to the people this parable: A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it out to husbandmen: and he was abroad for a long time. 10 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard. Who, beating him, sent him away empty. 11 And again he sent another servant. But they beat him also, and treating him reproachfully, sent him away empty. 12 And again he sent the third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out. 13 Then the lord of the vineyard said: What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be, when they see him, they will reverence him.Dixit autem dominus vineae : Quid faciam? Mittam filium meum dilectum : forsitan, cum hunc viderint, verebuntur. 14 Whom when the husbandmen saw, they thought within themselves, saying: This is the heir, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. 15 So casting him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them?Et ejectum illum extra vineam, occiderunt. Quid ergo faciet illis dominus vineae? 16 He will come, and will destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. Which they hearing, said to him: God forbid.veniet, et perdet colonos istos, et dabit vineam aliis. Quo audito, dixerunt illi : Absit.St Blaise, bishop of Sebaste, was beheaded after terrible torments, under Licinius, A.D. 317.

He propagated this prayer in obedience to a revelation received from the Blessed Virgin, to whom he had recourse for this purpose, about the war 1206, and to him we owe the spread of a devotion, in the Christian world. The decisive defeat of the Turks at the famous battle of Lepanto (A.D. 1571) and at Belgrade (A.D. 1716) gave occasion to the institution of this Feast and to its extension to the Universal Church.

6 He spoke also this parable: A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it, and found none. 7 And he said to the dresser of the vineyard: Behold, for these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down therefore: why cumbereth it the ground? 8 But he answering, said to him: Lord, let it alone this year also, until I dig about it, and dung it.At ille respondens, dicit illi : Domine dimitte illam et hoc anno, usque dum fodiam circa illam, et mittam stercora, 9 And if happily it bear fruit: but if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.et siquidem fecerit fructum : sin autem, in futurum succides eam. 10 And he was teaching in their synagogue on their sabbath.Erat autem docens in synagoga eorum sabbatis. 11 And behold there was a woman, who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years: and she was bowed together, neither could she look upwards at all. 12 Whom when Jesus saw, he called her unto him, and said to her: Woman, thou art delivered from thy infirmity. 13 And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.Et imposuit illi manus, et confestim erecta est, et glorificabat Deum. 14 And the ruler of the synagogue (being angry that Jesus had healed on the sabbath) answering, said to the multitude: Six days there are wherein you ought to work. In them therefore come, and be healed; and not on the sabbath day. 15 And the Lord answering him, said: Ye hypocrites, doth not every one of you, on the sabbath day, loose his ox or his ass from the manger, and lead them to water? 16 And ought not this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day? 17 And when he said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the things that were gloriously done by him.Et cum haec diceret, erubescant omnes adversarii ejus : et omnis populus gaudebat in universis, quae gloriosae fiebant ab eo.At the beginning of the four seasons of the Ecclesial Year, the Ember Days have been instituted by the Church to thank God for blessings obtained during the past year and to implore further graces for the new season. Their importance in the Church was formerly very great. They are fixed on the Wednesday, Friday and Saturday ; after the first Sunday of Lent for Spring after Whitsunday for Summer, after the Feast of the Elevation of the Cross (14th September) for Autumn, and after the Third Sunday of Advent for Winter. They are intended also to consecrate to God the various seasons in nature, and to prepare by penance those who are about to be ordained. Ordinations generally take place on the Ember Days. The faithful ought to pray on these days for good Priests. The Ember Days were once fastdays of obligation.

50 And he said to the woman: Thy faith hath made thee safe, go in peace. Let us weep for our sins.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAYO God, because without you we are not able to please you, mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.FIRST READING Jeremiah 4:11-12, 22-28Reader A reading from the Prophet Jeremiah. At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem: A hot wind comes from me out of the bare heights in the desert toward my poor people, not to winnow or cleanse-- a wind too strong for that. Now it is I who speak in judgment against them."For my people are foolish, they do not know me; they are stupid children, they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil, but do not know how to do good."I looked on the earth, and lo, it was waste and void; and to the heavens, and they had no light. I looked on the mountains, and lo, they were quaking, and all the hills moved to and fro. I looked, and lo, there was no one at all, and all the birds of the air had fled. I looked, and lo, the fruitful land was a desert, and all its cities were laid in ruins before the Lord, before his fierce anger. For thus says the Lord: The whole land shall be a desolation; yet I will not make a full end. Because of this the earth shall mourn, and the heavens above grow black; for I have spoken, I have purposed; I have not relented nor will I turn back.ReaderThe Word of the Lord.PeopleThanks be to God.PSALM Psalm 14 Dixit insipiens1 The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." *All are corrupt and commit abominable acts;there is none who does any good.2 The Lord looks down from heaven upon us all, *to see if there is any who is wise,if there is one who seeks after God.3 Every one has proved faithless;all alike have turned bad; *there is none who does good; no, not one.4 Have they no knowledge, all those evildoers *who eat up my people like breadand do not call upon the Lord?5 See how they tremble with fear, *because God is in the company of the righteous.6 Their aim is to confound the plans of the afflicted, *but the Lord is their refuge.7 Oh, that Israel's deliverance would come out of Zion! *when the Lord restores the fortunes of his people,Jacob will rejoice and Israel be glad.SECOND READING 1 Timothy 1:12-17Reader A Reading from the second letter to Timothy.I am grateful to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because he judged me faithful and appointed me to his service, even though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a man of violence. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus...

31 Now is the judgment of the world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.Nunc judicium est mundi : nunc princeps hujus mundi ejicietur foras. 32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to myself. 33 (Now this he said, signifying what death he should die.)( Hoc autem dicebat, significans qua morte esset moriturus.) 34 The multitude answered him: We have heard out of the law, that Christ abideth for ever; and how sayest thou: The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?Respondit ei turba : Nos audivimus ex lege, quia Christus manet in aeternum : et quomodo tu dicis : Oportet exaltari Filium hominis? quis est iste Filius hominis? 35 Jesus therefore said to them: Yet a little while, the light is among you. Walk whilst you have the light, that the darkness overtake you not. And he that walketh in darkness, knoweth not whither he goeth. 36 Whilst you have the light, believe in the light, that you may be the children of light. These things Jesus spoke; and he went away, and hid himself from them.Dum lucem habetis, credite in lucem, ut filii lucis sitis. The Son of Man must be lifted up.
