After years of post–Civil War poverty and arduous travel from Georgia in search of a better life in Colorado, the German family was attacked by a band of Cheyenne Dog Soldiers led by Medicine Water and Mochi. The parents and three older children were killed, while the four youngest daughters—Catherine (17), Sophia (12), Julia (7), and Adelaide (5)—were taken captive. The two youngest girls, Julia and Adelaide, were soon abandoned on the harsh Texas plains, surviving alone for nearly six weeks on wild berries, roots, and scavenged military rations before Cheyenne searchers recovered them on the chief's orders ahead of U.S. Army advances.Meanwhile, the older sisters, Catherine and Sophia, endured five months of arduous captivity, forced labor, and severe trauma within Cheyenne encampments during a brutal winter before their eventual release. Catherine coped by sewing clothing, learning portions of the Cheyenne language, and navigating a complex dynamic of protection and abuse from her captors. It's our 200th episode of RECESS, and Juliet and I are marking the milestone with laughs, a little blood, and a lot of gratitude. We look back at the last 50 episodes — we runs through the extraordinary lineup of women guests who've joined us, a powerhouse group that deserves more ears, and highlight one of our favorite recent episodes with John John Florence.Then yes, we have to address the incident. On the 4th of July, at the Marin County Fair, I picked up the child's sledgehammer, went a little too hard on the high striker, and the thing bounced back and opened up my head. A surgeon friend materialized to administer three staples and with zero blood on the white shirt, we were on our way back into the fair for fireworks. But it will go down in history as "the year that Kelly sledgehammered his head".From there, we get into the World Cup and give a long-overdue shoutout to the coaches and support staff doing the invisible, exhausting work that makes elite performance possible at that level. We also land on why Haaland wearing his mom's name on his jersey might be the coolest thing happening in sports right now.We just got back from a week on the Klamath River - no cell service, no Wi-Fi, days of being barefoot and sleeping under the stars. We were stoked to run into the Paddle Tribal Waters group on the river - a program reconnecting indigenous youth to their land through whitewater kayaking. Our bodies felt incredible. Our nervous systems got a full reset. We can't recommend fully disconnecting out in nature enough.And finally, we share a note we got from Jason Sacks (CEO of Positive Coaching Alliance, and prior TRS Podcast guest), who emailed us after reading an Ambush newsletter piece we ran on hearing loss and dementia risk — because hearing loss is the single biggest modifiable dementia risk factor. Patrick K. O'Donnell, guest author, details the final confrontation between Richard Blazer and Mosby's Rangers at Cabletown (or Meyerstown). After Blazer's scouts had embarrassed the Rangers twice, Mosby orchestrated a massive 300-man ambush. During a running gun battle across farmland, Lewis Powell, a Ranger known as "Terrible Powell," personally captured Blazer. The significance of Powell's role extends far beyond the battlefield; he was an operative for the Confederate Secret Service who had previously escaped Union custody in Baltimore. After delivering Blazer to a Richmond prison—likely a cover for meeting his handlers—Powell returned to "Mosby's Confederacy" briefly before "deserting" to Union lines to pose as a civilian. In reality, Powell had joined John Wilkes Booth's conspiracy to kidnap President Lincoln. The plot was a well-funded, large-scale operation involving hundreds of people and a network of safe houses. Evidence suggests that Mosby's command was aware of the kidnapping plan, as Mosby moved hundreds of men 80 miles away from his usual territory to secure the exact area of the Potomac River where the kidnappers intended to cross. This indicates that the kidnapping plot was not merely the work of a few actors but a coordinated special operation supported by the Confederate military infrastructure. Army Veteran Manny Pasillas Lucio shares the combat story that changed his life forever.Born in Mexico and raised in California, Manny grew up navigating family tension, poverty, and the streets of Compton before deciding to join the Army after 9/11. After basic training at Fort Benning, he was sent to Fort Lewis, Washington, where he became part of a Stryker infantry unit and later joined a scout sniper platoon.In this episode of Urban Valor, Manny opens up about his deployment to Iraq, including missions in Mosul, Baghdad, Taji, and Baqubah. He describes small team missions, hunting high-value targets, taking fire, encountering IEDs, working alongside other units, and the daily fear that came with operating outside the wire.Manny also shares the devastating moment his Stryker was hit by an IED while returning to base.
