About 50 years ago, the Whole Earth Catalogue was published, providing people with all the information and tools they needed to build their own geodesic dome homes and grow gardens and weave clothing. It also had a fun story in a lot of episodes entitled “Divine Right's Trip”. In this episode we mainly hear about RJ's recent 31-day sojourn in Europe, his driving experiences, food experiences, phone and translation app experiences, and increasingly hopeless efforts to talk to security guards and people in very long washroom lineups. It has that same sort of good-natured-slightly-chaotic-but-I-wanna-do-this feel as that 50-year-old column. Dig in. Listen. Laugh. Pick up a tip or two. It's all here.Link: Crash Test Dummies
“We are as gods and might as well get good at it,” Stewart Brand famously wrote in “The Whole Earth Catalogue.” Human beings act upon nature at fantastic scale, altering whole ecosystems, terraforming the world to our purposes, breeding new species into existence and driving countless more into extinction. The power we wield is awesome. But Brand was overly optimistic. We did not get good at it. We are terrible at it, and the consequences surround us.That’s the central theme of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist Elizabeth Kolbert’s new book, “Under a White Sky: The Nature of the Future.” And yet, there is no going back. We will not return to a prelapsarian period where humans let nature alone. Indeed, as Kolbert shows, there is no natural nature left — we live in the world (and in particular, a climate) we altered, and are altering. The awful knowledge that our interventions have gone awry again and again must be paired with the awful reality that we have no choice save to try to manage the mess we have made.Examples abound in Kolbert’s book, but in my conversation with her I wanted to focus on one that obsesses me: solar geoengineering. To even contemplate it feels like the height of hubris. Are we really going to dim the sun? And yet, any reasonable analysis of the mismatch between our glacial politics and our rapidly warming planet demands that we deny ourselves the luxury of only contemplating the solutions we would prefer. With every subsequent day that our politics fails, the choices that we will need to make in the future become worse. This is a conversation about some of the difficult trade-offs and suboptimal options that we are left with in what Kolbert describes as a “no-analog moment.” We discuss the prospect of intentionally sending sulfurous particles into the atmosphere to dim the sun, whether “carbon capture” technology could scale up to the levels needed to make a dent in emissions levels, the ethics of using gene editing technologies to make endangered species more resistant to climate change, the governance mechanisms needed to prevent these technologies from getting out of hand, what a healthier narrative about humanity’s relationship with nature would sound like, how the pandemic altered carbon emissions, and more.At the end, we discuss another fascinating question that Kolbert wrote about recently in The New Yorker: Why is a Harvard astrophysicist arguing Earth has already been visited by aliens, and should we believe him?References: Whole Earth CatalogueField Notes from a Catastrophe by Elizabeth KolbertThe Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth KolbertThe Ministry of the Future by Kim Stanley RobinsonExtraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth by Avi LoebRecommendations: The Great Gatsby by F. In this episode, I talk with astrologer, trickster, and author Caroline Casey. She began studying astrology as a late teen, where she was the kid who got to hang out at a salon presided over by Dr. Andrew Weil, comprised of way cool intellectual political mystics reading anything the Whole Earth Catalogue recommended, including Carl Jung, and Joseph Campbell - with whom she studied Grail legend and Animal Myths in later years. Her unique art of astro-mythological, political-guiding, meta-storytelling is presented in a myriad media venues. She is the author of, "Making the Gods Work for You: The Astrological Language of the Psyche,” and her audiobook, “Visionary Activist Astrology,” published by Sounds True. Caroline invites us to magnetize, animate, and spiral forth the irresistible invitation to participatory kinship.Caroline created Coyote Network News, a mythological news service for the Liberating Trickster within us all; to whom Syncretism is a sacrament, especially now. She is the host-creator and weaver of context for The Visionary Activist Show (for over 23 years) on Pacifica Radio Network. (“Democracy Now!" on mushrooms)"Astrology is one of the great meta-languages of antiquity, uniting everything of consequence."

In this episode, I'm Stuck@Om with John Markoff—a renowned technology reporter for the New York Times. John currently allocates his time to writing a biography for Stewart Brand—a writer, editor, and entrepreneur—who is famous for saying “We are as God's and we might as well get good at it”. John and I discuss topics revolving around the biography, such as the Whole Earth Catalogue and Stewart's organizations “The Long Now Foundation” and “Revive & Restore”. During our conversation, we talk about the importance of our history. As the pandemic is sweeping through the world and we're losing many of our elderly population—the realization hits me that we are losing a piece of our past. Collective wisdom is being snuffed out and it cannot be replaced. We also talk about the evolution of the internet and social networks. We once believed a connected world was a better world — but is that our reality? With the Coronavirus pandemic; will we see a fundamental transformation of the way we communicate? Children are now growing up with iPads, Facetime, and interacting with ‘Alexa' is normal. We're already seeing a fundamental shift that will likely be perpetuated. Could the pandemic be preparing us for something bigger? A changed planet — perhaps a dystopian future where we are forced to live indoors? John points out that the futures that happen tend to surprise us and come out of nowhere. This world is a giant game of ‘wait and see'. Listen to this conversation for a full exploration of the future of our world, communication, and technology. In an unusually focused episode, the Shed Dogs review RJ’s recent extensive road trip (in the Whole Earth Catalogue, it was Divine Right’s Trip), get exciting news on acting jobs coming up for KJ, and struggle to predict the outcome of the last federal election. We do touch on home repairs and a Shuttle tale, too, but mostly it’s tacos in Rawlins and Calamity Jane’s tombstone.
On a recent trip back to the USA, I got a chance to meet with the inspirational and charming, Lloyd Kahn. Lloyd is an author, a photographer, a builder, and a man of action! He has written over 40 books on subjects ranging from health and stretching to he ephemeral charm of driftwood structures on the Pacific Coast. We talked about his work as a builder, and as an editor of the “Whole Earth Catalogue”, living healthy, and the life-force giving capacity of working with your hands. At 85 years old, Lloyd has more energy, enthusiasm and spark than most people I know! It is with great pleasure that we bring you this conversation with a true treasure of a human being. Share, enjoy, and buy a book!

(1) FRITJOF CAPRA - Originally aired April 2009 (2) NORA BATESON - Originally aired July 2012 Both interviews this week explore systems thinking - one of the key ingredients of a world that just might work. First. I speak with FRITJOF CAPRA, who wrote a book in 1981 that greatly influenced my view not only of science, medicine, agriculture, energy, and even politics - it influenced my view of reality. That book was THE TURNING POINT, and its message is as profound and revolutionary today. "We live today in a globally interconnected world, in which biological, psychological, social, and environmental phenomena are all interdependent. To describe this world appropriately we need an ecological perspective which the Cartesian world view does not offer. What we need, then, is a new 'paradigm' - a new vision of reality; a fundamental change in our thoughts, perceptions, and values." Capra wrote those words in its preface. In the second half my guest will be NORA BATESON, and we'll talk about AN ECOLOGY OF MIND, the wonderful documentary she's made about her father, the late anthropologist GREGORY BATESON. Her documentary is subtitled A Daughter's Portrait of Gregory Bateson. It tells of the unique anthropologist, philosopher, author, naturalist, and systems theorist, who was ahead of his time in seeing reality as made up not of things or even of ideas, but of relationships. The film features interviews with California Governor Jerry Brown, physicist and systems theorist Fritjof Capra, Whole Earth Catalogue publisher Stewart Brand, cultural philosopher and poet William Irwin Thompson; and Nora's sister, anthropologist Mary Catherine Bateson. Nora's film will introduce Bateson to a new generation and remind many of us of the impact her father had on the way a lot of people perceived the world. "The major problems in the world are the result of the difference between how nature works and the way people think." Those are the words of the late Gregory Bateson - and I couldn't agree more.
